5:20 - My Father wasn't trained by anyone associated with the mob. He did participate in the 1952 Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland. But it was Cus D'Amato who guided my Father to the top. And he managed to keep Dad away from any underworld influence. R.I.P. Cus. We miss you.

My father wasn't involved either! He was a 20-year-old sparring partner for your Dad prior to the Olympics. I knew your Dad through my activities at the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Cus was close with Fat Tony Salerno and Charles "Charie Black" Antonucci. Cus always denied it, but he was involved with financing the fight in 1959 between your dad and Johannsen. There's an article rtcile online about it from that time with Fat Tony called "Mr. X." Even Mike Tyson met Fat To y through Cus when he was 13.

I met your father once outside Madison square garden the night of the Dokes v Ruddock fight. I was about 10 years old and he shook my hand and I was in heaven!! He was a great man!

This is great stuff! Most younger guys have no idea how big boxing was, how it was ingrained into our culture. Two guys from the same city could fight & bring most of their neighborhood with them to fill up big arenas. UFC ppv at home, though entertaining, can't compare.

Interestingly Jimmy Nap wasnt inducted into the Genovese Crime Family until April 1977, while Sonny Franzese had only been a soldier for less than 3 years in July 1953

That's an excellent point. Although Jimmy Nap was a major figure in boxing and the numbers well before he was made. I've heard that Sonny was made as a teenager

Might have something to do with the fact the books were closed from the mid 50s until the mid 70s. So unless you got made right there at the end of the mid 50s (like Sonny did in '53 or so), that means you were waiting another 20+ years. And there were a LOT or powerful mobsters who had to wait that 20+ years.

Seems the Colombo Family put faith in a lot of Youngsters. Young mobsters like Carmine Persico, Greg Scarpa, etc were made before the books closed in the 50s

The most sources say Sonny was made at age 32 in 1950. He was active in organized crime since the 30's though.
