    I actually kinda like these videos, regardless of the 'its just a pegboard' comment. It's along the same lines of Adam Savage spending several hours putting in place some new storage solution that will save him 3 seconds once every 2 months. The process and creativity that goes into thinking how you can change your space is one of the things I enjoy most about doing this myself. It's small steps that goes into making your creative space that little bit nicer to use.
    8/10 - would watch Rob make a pegboard again. The cliffhanger with the monitor was mean though. I'll be sorely disappointed if you fix that issue without showing us...

    Not up to your usual standard, which is really great information delivered fairly succinctly. This is a pegboard.

      Ha, thanks. Oddly enough, I did this video about a month ago, and I'm REALLY liking having the pegboard. The practical application is good, but it still needs more work.

    CNC a mount for the last joint on the monitor arm. and then mount that to the extrusion! that way you can still rotate the monitor and it would look nice:)

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 роки тому

      Kinda what I'm thinking, but it might be too tall? Hum, but removing the base and attaching it directly? I'll have to think about it.

      @@RobertCowanDIY It look like the one joint lined up pretty good with the "half" height you did! I would totaly do a nice cnced part that accepts one of the links of the arm and mount it to the extrusion. Then you can run all the cables hidden and all. Im exited for you, can you tell? lol

    Why not mount the monitor arm on the aluminum extrusion?

  • @compwiser1

    I like the idea. Maybe mount the monitor to the top of the 8020 still allowing it to be viewed from both sides. Nothing wrong with overbuilding lol.

    I think I would have the divider on the short axis of the bench not the long axis as you have it. This would mean you still have a large square surface for doing big things, you can still do the camera angle across the bench like you did in the introduction, a monitor arm that can "go down" could be mounted on top of the mid extrusion.

    If the monitor mount works inverted, mounting it to the ceiling ( or a post that is ceiling.mounted) might be an option. allows for a full-sized peg board divider and still keeps the screen accessible from both sides

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 роки тому

      The ceiling is very high, at least 10' I think? I would love to hang more stuff from the ceiling, but it's too high up, and running cables would be a pain as well.

    I think it would be really nice if you used some sort of clear perf board instead of the white one. I don’t know if they make those or not, but it won’t obstruct the view from either side. I think it would look a lot cooler

    • @RobertCowanDIY

    It's a tough one. I often find myself in the same place. Looking at it in the video I had two thoughts. Is it going to potentially be an interference issue when clamping something in the vise and sometimes it is nice to have a really large surface to lay something big on to work on. Obviously the divider will limit this. I vote (not like it counts for anything :) )for putting it (tape holder) on the wall and leaving the worktable free of a divider.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 роки тому +1

      Oh, I hear ya. Before this project, I really couldn't use the benches as a single surface. I have my table saw (I'm planning on building an outfeed table) and the CNC router. So I have a couple surfaces that are 4' x 4' or so. The benches are 7' x 3'. I haven't found many instances where I need more surface than that. The vise is really only used for smaller things, I'm not really a woodworker, so I don't use it as intended, I just hold small parts (like you saw in the video) for tapping and such. That still works just fine.

    Can you use put a full-size pegboard where the monitor is then just mount the monitor on top of the center extrusion allowing it to swing to either side still?

    If it's worth engineering, it's worth over-engineering: How about an overhead gantry system? Not sure what you have overhead, but how about suspending from up above? Leaves the valuable horizontal and waist-level space unencumbered. I was thinking the same for your CNC controller/monitor. Something overhead that could roll back and forth or left and right, and hang the CPU behind the monitor; there are lots of very capable Win10 CPUs that aren't much bigger than a hardcover book. Now you only have power and CAT5 coming off the CPU/monitor pair.

    • @RobertCowanDIY

      My ceiling is pretty high. I've thought about doing something like that, but it's just so high up. I don't really have a problem with the computer, it's under the workbench, mounted on the underneath side of the top. You'd still have to run cables, so it doesn't really save me anything.

    So what happens when you’re working from the opposite side that the tape is on? Do you have redundant tape stacks (😎)? I would think vertical stacks would work better since you can access from either side, unless the intent is to add more pegs to the pegboard.

    How do you keep your ridgid tablesaw fence square to the miter slot. mine has so much variation in it. sometimes it will toe in to the blade sometimes it will toe out. I hope you have a solution, because I tried some 3d printed larger pads and that didn't really work.

    • @RobertCowanDIY

      Eh, I just push it forward before I lock it down if that makes sense. I push it against the rail to make sure it's seated well and perpendicular. It can easily lock at an angle either way, but I found a 'trick' of just making sure it's engaged in the front rail before locking it down. It's not great, but it works.

    • @crashkg
      @crashkg 8 місяців тому

      Thank you for your reply. Yes, i do this, it works kind of. I am searching for super precision which I think I might only achieve by replacing the rail system with something else. Maybe the Super Cool Tools fence. I really enjoy your teaching style by the way. Thanks. @@RobertCowanDIY

    Is it possible to make a transmission system for a heavy spinner to make it spin up faster and a higher tip speed? I’m thinking about making a 250 lbs fbs bot that spins after than any other fbs in history

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 роки тому

      Well, faster isn't always ideal. You can't go above 250MPH, and even getting that much weight to spin that fast is a challenge. Also, you might be significantly less stable at those speeds.

      @@RobertCowanDIY Btw I’m gonna completely new to this sport when I get involved. That being said I’m thinking of using tracks instead of wheels for traction which I think will help increase control and stability while also helping to spin the shell and not the body. Also gonna make the drive motorcycle very responsive to get more agility s as nd be more difficult for con trol bots to rush me
