Tape holder shelf, and prototyping

  • This video is about making an organizer rack for assorted rolls of adhesive tape. It is constructed using 3/4" plywood and PVC.
    *****
    If you don't have an extra spade bit to mod, you can still make this using a standard 1.125" bit: Just set the pipes in place with some silicone. I've just encountered this problem more than once, and so this was the excuse that I needed to act.
    *****
    I spent a good deal of the time here focusing on the development process, so the actual build is kind of rapid fire. I didn't want it to become too boring or redundant. Pay close attention though, because there are lots of little tricks in this one: For example, did you catch that little rubber band on the coping saw? That's so when you disengage the blade on one side, it doesn't pop out from the other! The coping saw is a severely underrated tool; I use it quite a bit, but for some reason it doesn't make its way into very much footage. I would suggest that you learn to use one, because it is both elegant and effective (once you become accustomed to using it). It does everything that a scroll-saw can do, and much, much more. As an aside, it often amuses me when a commenter complains how a such-and-such tool is unrealistic or inaccessible to most people, when a squirt of ambition and a simple hand-operated alternative will still get you to the same place as any of the motor-driven conveniences that I use do. Sheesh, were my methods crude when I was younger. But there is much to be gained by early employment of primitive procedure. Not only technique is gained, but appreciation. Besides, skills gained early on with basic tools are transferrable in the long term, so it's not like you wasted your time learning how to shape and whittle with a utility knife when you were a kid out on the trails in the summertime. It was more productive than smoking.

    I learn something every time I watch your videos.
    In this one i learned:
    Modification of spade bits. (VERY useful!)
    Drilling technique.
    Problem solving.
    Manly men may proudly parade pink tools.
    Measuring and marking technique ( for depth)
    How to safely gang-cut cylindrical things, (PVC pipe)
    By accident, your prototype might be the world's fourth-best toilet-paper dispenser!
    All of that portends, ANY creative project might solve some ancillary problem, therefore ALL creative projects may have ancillary value.
    Even if projects are not immediately perfect, they have intrinsic and potential value.
    All of THAT may be one the the primordial purposes of creativity: evolution.
    Apothegm: All creative effort reaps multiple benefits.
    Mazel Tov!

      Ditto, writ large!!!
      Love the ironic understated honest style....
      Without a flannel shirt and beard anywhere - unless Charlize Theron was wearing them....but like anything Charlize I can never honestly say what she was wearing as I just get captivated looking at her.
      But I did concentrate until we got to there, promise!!!
      Cheers and thanks for the editing work etc in getting it to UA-cam.

    Very nice. Sometimes what we think are our best ideas just end up fails. You just remember what you learned and approach the problem from a different angle. I saw you using tools in simple combinations that I never thought of before. The measuring and cutting of the PVC pipe was a very useful tip. Thank you. Keep broadcasting!!

    Nice one, pocket. A couple years ago, I came up with a term for this kind of replacement: "undumbing". It has a quite fun ring to it. Also, 2 birds with one stone, undumbing both your tape holder and the horror that is the toilet roll holder. Seriously those things are such a pain.

    I've been puzzling my tape storage for a while now, too. We had similar ideas, but I incorporated a hacksaw blade as the ripping edge. Though, I still need to build mine. I think it's a great idea (and not dumb at all)!

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  8 років тому +2

      What about one of those metal edges from a box of plastic-wrap? Maybe on (or in) the gray tube.
      You just gave me another idea: What if the tape was put in this thing backwards, so that static electricity and gravity both worked in your favor? Then the adhesive side would move up towards the blade, instead of sticking on the lower pipe. Requires further experimentation ;)

    Hehe, enjoyable video. I think I learn most from others mistakes if they are presented in a good way. Matthias Wandel has made some videos like that lately but it is very unusual that people want to admit their dumb ideas. Regarding that it reminds me of one thing that bugs me about education. All through school you are shown what works and told what we know but I think I never heard a lesson about what we dont know. Isnt that just as important to know but it is all up to you to discover that for yourself. You have a very distorted view when you leave school, thinking that you know everything.

    Also, for what it's worth, I like how you don't slow down the sound when you speed up the video. I've been watching some other people who do stuff like you, (because I've seen all of your videos) and when they slow down the sound back to real time it's weird...

      @pocket83  8 років тому

      Thanks! At this point, I'm in around a two hundred vids, counting hidden content, other channels, and stuff I haven't posted. I've tried quite a few editing techniques now. I tried that speed with normal sound, but then you have to add the multiplier for clarity (4x, etc.). The pitch change does that for you. Clarity is key here.
      As for the speed-up in general, I'm torn. For one, it's almost too easy to film that way, because it is so easy to edit. It's also incredibly misleading. But it's so cool looking!
