Thank you so much for making these videos, I am 27 weeks pregnant with my third child and was diagnosed today with gestational diabetes. Feeling super overwhelmed with the diet change, counting carbs and testing my blood sugar levels. This video has helped me feeling less overwhelmed with the diagnosis!

Hi Chelsea, it really is a lot to wrap your brain around at first, but I promise it gets easier and you can still have your healthy baby! Congratulations on your third baby (3 is so fun!) You got this! Be kind and patient with yourself while you are figuring it all out. It’s not about 1 number, but the trend. So just track it, send your numbers in to your doctor and keep working on it.

They treat us like its our fault.

    • @PregnancyandPostpartumTV

I'm sorry that was your experience. They number has NOTHING to do with how you did and should only be used as information on how you can move forward (without blame and guilt). If your numbers are high, it's not your fault. It's just a number. That number tells us that your body was not able to move the sugar from your blood into your cells (that sugar in your blood may be from carbs or from your liver). If you have made all the lifestyle changes that are reasonable for you to make then medication would be considered (not your fault - just that your pancreas couldn't keep up with the insulin resistance from your pregnancy hormones). Sending you a big virtual hug. Sorry you have to deal with this at all

In my experience it was the doctors (obgyn and endo) that treated mr like it was my fault and are suspicious of your diet compliance when things worsen whilst the diabetes educators, dieticians, nurses and midwives were much more understanding and never rushed to blame your behaviour for a high reading. The doctors were also very negative about the diagnosis, whilst the other care providers were more optimistic and encouraging.

Currently 31 weeks with baby 4, never had GD before. I'm white European, I wasn't and still am not overweight, I watch what I eat, I am active every day and yet this week I had glucose in my urine (1oomg/dL) and 2 weeks ago was slightly high on the 1 hour glucose (142). Next week I have to take the 3 hour glucose. I literally watch what I eat (I'm pre med so I REALLY pay attention to stuff like diet and fitness) with the exception of the occasional mini pop (very rare and usually when I'm working hard - im active in my job) and yet it still looks like I have developed it. It literally feels like well I did everything "right" and still here I am, I may as well have enjoyed some treats lol feeling defeated TBH. I don't sit around and eat bon bons and indulge and I'm not overweight but I still have this issue. Its not fair. :(

How was your 3 hour glucose test and the rest of your pregnancy?
I'm about 29 weeks and my 1 hour glucose result was 152 so I think I would fail the 3 hour test so I chose to jump to at-home blood glucose monitoring to avoid an official diagnosis of GD and I'm only 1 week into monitoring but I'm doing well with tracking and keeping my numbers in-range so I hope the remainder of my pregnancy we're going to be alright.

I'm the exact same! I have always been very healthy, eat mostly fruits and veggies and organic meat, make my own whole grain sourdough bread, the only sweets I ever have are dark chocolate (like 80% and higher and only a bite), and I have twin toddlers as well as exercise pretty much every day. There is no doubt I am active, I am not nor was I ever overweight, I'm 32 weeks and have barely gained more than 10 lbs that I'm pretty sure is all tummy and boobs, and I just got diagnosed. I'm pissed!! Even her explanation doesn't really let me know why this is happening. I guess I just don't produce enough insulin? Or I don't get enough sleep? I have had a lack of appetite this whole pregnancy, so I don't think it's that I have too much of an appetite. I had twins before and had to pay out the nose for all my medical bills and I have been so careful wanting a low intervention low cost birth. :( Now it looks like I'm gonna have to take out a second mortgage on my home. Whyyyyy

Similar situation first pregnancy I have been very careful with my diet, have been exercising had my test because of my ethnicity but otherwise my diet etc has been very healthy. Just found out last week I have GDM the dietician said my sugar level was not very high but since its a little bit I fall under the GDM bracket. Was really upset and frustrated at the time.
Now I have accepted it I just keep reminding myself it's frustrating but could still be worse at least it's only a little bit high so other than increasing exercises I don't need to do much to keep my sugars under control.

Thank you for this video. I found out this morning that I failed my 3hr glucose test and have GD. I'm 31 and 28 weeks along with my 2nd. I've been doing everything right this pregnancy. Exercising, eating well, etc. And I just feel like I failed. Like "how did this happen to me." And I worry about my baby's health and possible complications, since I'm already a high risk pregnancy

I failed my 1hr glucose test and have to get the 3 hr(I was 168). I drink water all day long and eat very little sugar. I guess my biggest issue will be with white carbs, I love grilled cheese, pasta etc.
The most sugary stuff I eat was during morning sickness when a Coca Cola was the most helpful for my nausea. Although I stopped drinking any soda after about 13 weeks pregnant(I’m now 28) I always thought I was balancing the carbs with a good salad for dinner or veggies and I always use olive oil instead of butter, mostly because I love it… so I have struggled eating enough this pregnancy for some reason, my last one 11 years ago I ate everything in sight. I just feel so full so fast… I guess I can try some of those protein shakes that don’t have a bunch of carbs and sugar… idk, I just know I have completely stopped gaining any weight and now I have to eat a very strict diet and it’s a little overwhelming… I just want a healthy baby so I’m going to research and try some things out as I go… I am thirsty all the time but my appetite is literally non existent… ☹️

Thank you! I was borderline on my 1 hr and had one number off on my 3 hour. I have been doing an at-home test 4 time a day for the past 2 weeks....its scary and I feel like its my fault 😕 but thank you for this. Its a bit reassuring.

I'm almost 27 weeks and failed the 1 hour glucose test so had to do the 3 hour glucose test today, only had one level (Hour 2) that came out abnormal and was diagnosed with GD. I honestly feel like such a failure.

I got diagnosed with GD in my 29th week even though I was saying to my doctor from the beginning of my 4th month that my ankles are abnormally swollen and I am constantly hungry no matter what I ate. He did nothing and did that routine ogtt at 29 weeks. Ofc it was not good and numbers were really high. They prescribed me insulin and diet and even with it I had numbers of 220 2 hours after meal... it was scary enough to know that I have had it since 4th month probably and I ate everything like I used to when I was not pregnant. I cannot imagine numbers back then. Thank God, baby is healthy but I have been left with insulin resistance after giving birth. Its been 6 months since I gave birth and my sugars are not in normal range. After pasta it goes up to 225. They say, I don't need therapy yet. I kinda don't believe them anything anymore. And I was stressed out and really struggling with my feelings after giving birth and didn't get much understanding from around me... lack of sleep, lost to much blood, and crying baby that won't stop crying. I slept 1-2 hours in 10 days for 2 months.. in my pregnancy I was stressed out even before I knew I had GD. Everyone expected that I be perfect and show no signs of pregnancy such as mood swings or any needs...

I’m sorry, Berina, that you have been through so much. Sending you a big hug. You are correct, 220 is too high after a meal. I would seek a second opinion. Hopefully your baby is sleeping better (and you are sleeping better). Sleep deprivation makes (especially as severe as you have had it) will make everything so difficult. Sending love 💞💞💞

I passed my 1-hour, but my latest ultrasound at 29 weeks shows that my baby's abdominal circumference is way big and theres a lot of amniotic fluid. I go in for my 3-hour test next week and my doctor said that "late onset GD" is possible. I've immediately started on a diabetes meal plan, but I will admit I've been pretty carb-heavy the last month or so. I can't help but feel guilty, especially since I didn't have it with my first child.

The key word is “increases”. NOT creates. There’s a difference between the two. Which means they don’t know actually makes it happen. But know what can enhance the probability.
