My local machine shop did my hone & I used Total Seal 46770ST-6 AP rings in my 12 Mustang 3.7 cyclone with Manley rods and pistons. Versus the stock ford piston rings I have 50-75% less blow by. Seriously even at 7500+ rpm minimal. I would go from changing my catch can once a month to every other month. My little 3.7 cyclone made 324 whp through a 6r80, Circle d 3c & 355 gears. I have tons of dyno print outs. Best with stock pistons and rings was 316/306 to the wheel. Manley pistons, Totalseal rings 324/309. Both pistons were 10.5-1 Im a believer in total seal piston rings. Love the Info I honestly purchased my rings because of the info from these videos.
The only regret I have with total seal top gapless rings,is not having to rebuild any of my engines right now. The times I have used them, you nailed it with the minimal blowby. On a leak down test after 30k ,the needle moved a width of itself or 2 off of zero.
First,- I have watched and paid attn to almost all of total Seal schooling, - BUT with that in mind EVERY machine shop I have ever asked if they have said equipment to do the above..I get the deer in the headlights look. So my advice Toatl Seal IS,- please give us a list of shops that can do this performance hone job!!!!!!
@@TotalSeal I Have several sets of Harley EVO Nodular iron Axtell cylinders I need to do here, we need to talk about rings for these very HIPO engines, and where to get them sized and honed at. Thanx
Thanks. It’s more about the tools to see what surface was actually created. We routinely see that the same honing process doesn’t always create the same surface finish result…
Great video! From a technical standpoint, you’re doing a wonderful job of explaining the purpose of a proper before I’m home size with respect to Broll search patterns and even including coated services. Right tool for the right job the back up everything that you talk about… Great work
Can you make a video with the experts, on which stone grid, speed produce the best results, I understand it depends of engine sleeve/cylinder material, type of ring, ring thickness and ring coating.
Thanks again for another great class room segment! I wonder how the USB microscope and profilometer might show the difference between a properly prepared and cleaned bore vs one just wiped down with the red shop towel (seemingly the standard). And what exactly is a lint free cloth... ? Thanks as always😎
Lint free cloth? We use newspaper or the whitish masking paper with ATF as a bore cleaner after I was taught this by a noted engine builder...Process starts off with HOT! water & Dawn Dishwashing soap....Spray WD40 on machined finishes before drying and after drying then the ATF in the cylinder bores wiped with the paper until it comes out clean with no dark residue.
@@ejgrant5191 interesting. Thanks. I have tried to find the elusive lint free definition for a while now. It seems like a simple question but it is not. That is a great process so thanks for sharing. I have been harassing Lake with this question for a while now. 😎
@@TotalSeal My memory is fuzzy, but I thought I remembered somebody talking about doing the white glove test when you use the quick seat , because those bores have to be spotless like you're serving tea to the queen. How much if any does cylinder wall finish affect near wall detonation characteristics by the amount of oil dilution to fuel condensed at cylinder wall especially in high compression engines will huge swirl from modern cylinder head port designs ?
Next level , the motor im playing with , the tolerances are so tight it dont have bearings , rod or crank bearings ..my dial bore gauge goes down to .0005 , the spec sheet measures in .0001 , max. Since the oem's pioneered a new high pressure anode/cathode moly adherence spray procedure on Oil Rings and began SKIPPING the exterior Oil Ring Honing(cut corners/to save money)..... ALL Cylinder Bore Finishes had to get "rougher' so as the oil rings could basically "grind" themselves in upon fire-up... far moreso than ever before. Frigg'in JOKE.... I long for the days when we still had SSOU50 Federal Mogul Oil Rings..... WAY BETTER than any of this Hastings GARBAGE !

I thought the video would be about what surface finish would ruin your engine, but didn’t see anything about that.

Much appreciated!
This is the explanation I’ve been waiting on…
Would still like to see a scale cross section or how about a scanning electron microscope view.
Stay tuned…

It doesn’t affect detonation, but the oil chemistry can affect detonation.

Act now and get one single total seal piston ring for FREE (plus s&h) thats RIGHT we said FREE
how do you know if a machine shop is at this level
You have to ask them if they have a profilometer. If they don’t, they are not.
What microscope are you using?
