You are a stud Brian. Riding in the winter is not something I plan to do at this time of my life. I have done that in my teens and had my share of bruises. Also, it is the salt that I am more worried about than ice. The damage it will do to the frame and drivetrain. As you also mentioned the cleaning after the ride. Your video is very informative and helpful keep it up.

Thank you for one more Nice video. I don’t use my Brompton on ice or snow. In winter , In Northern Norway, I ride a 26 inch Bike because there are much more tyres to choose from. It seems to me that your Scwalbe tyres just have to few studs to give a decent grip. I use Suomi wxc on both wheels. Those will take you everywhere, but i guess the are not made for the Brompton size. My best advice when riding on ice is: be on top of the wheels at all times, dont lean.

Nice video! It's great to hear real world usage feedback, i find my 20" folding bike wheels are much more prone to sliding than larger 700 or 26" wheels in bad conditions.

Nice, useful review... Interesting tips about lining the tyre and just using on the front... I'd never have thought of that... It's a bit naff that the, studs poke through the back of the tyre isn't it? The worst problem in London are leaves and cobbles (strips of them on the canal towpaths)... Leaves are like slippery ice at times... and leaves together with puddles mask a thousand potential elephant traps... I'm deffo sticking with Marathons then... My average speed is measurably lower in winter than summer... I guess that slowing right down and patience are the best tactics...

Good video Brian. I am in my 60s and have done all my winters in the UK or up in the German mountains (-20C anyone?).
    From my experience:
    * I would not choose a motorcycle in icy weather. (Been there, done that, got the bruises, broken brake/clutch levers & mirrors.)
    * Much as I prefer cycling and public transport, this weather would persuade me to get out my (seldom used but well maintained, 20 year old) car.
    * The biggest minus generally that I have found riding a Brompton is the comparatively poor traction you get from smaller diameter wheels. In your current weather I would choose either a road bike with 700C or a mountain bike running 29-er wheels. I would also fit the broadest tyres the frame allows with the deepest tread pattern too. I have never used but don't think I would be tempted to try studs in mixed ice/dry road conditions.
As you state, your best defence against falling off in this weather is exercising due care and caution. In my experience of winter driving and riding, our biggest danger is the ineptitude of other road users. Take care and stay safe.

I've used this same Schwalbe winter tire on my Brompton throughout winters in both Montreal and Toronto. They performed pretty well for me. However I decided to stop riding my Brompton in winter all together, because the salt on the road will just rust out all the folding components of the bike. Better to just get a winter bike for the snowy months.

Qn 4: What is the importance of tyre pressure Brian? I keep my front & rear Schwalbe Marathon Plus at 100psi throughout the year for *EVERY ride to prevent punctures. Do you deflate the rear a little for ice riding, to what psi and what do you run the front winter tyre at? For the rest of the year what psi do you prefer for your 16inch tyres?

My wife and I have folding bikes (B'twin Tilt 500 from Decathlon) and last weekend I put Marathon Winter Plus tyres on (back and front). In the past week so far (some wet, some dry, all cold, not icy yet though) I've noticed a few things. The concrete 'grid' sections on cycle paths (at least here in the Docklands in London) which feature parallel ridges in the direction of travel, they now seem to want to channel the tyre into the groove in an alarming way that the original tyres never did. Cobble stones (there's plenty of patches of that around the docks) are slippy on the old tyres, but on these Winter Pluses still somewhat slippy, so I have to be careful and slow over them (and they're probably the cause of the few lost studs already). Third surprising thing is a positive - I went over a patch of gravelly ground which I normally avoid on the original tyres as it would feel sluggish, bumpy and uneven on them, with these Marathon Winter Plus, they just love gravel! Superb. No trouble going over the gravel at all, no need to avoid it now.

The poke-through is my #1 peeve with these tires. On regular Marathons I can ride an entire year without a flat. Yet on these, I get about 1-2 months before the stud starts to rupture through, leading to a flat in the freezing cold, 10 miles from home. The added grip is amazing, and I would say absolutely essential for any amount of commuting I do on ice-covered side streets or bike paths. Studded front wheel only is definitely less stable around corners, but a good compromise. I'm gonna try lining the interior like you to see if I can get any extra life. Curious how long you can go with those mods.

I use Schwalbe Winter Plus 20 inches with more studs and a built in safety belt. Maybe they are not available for 16 inch rims.

Bravo Brian - another interesting and highly relevant video! I have no experience of the winter tyres but given the running pressure of the 16” I suppose the fact that the studs punch through is predictable. It would be good if Schwalbe could put a steel mesh layer in to spread the the load on the inside to protect the tubes, or if someone could come up with a strong mesh skin for the contact surface... 🤔 In the UK we don’t usually have the kind of weather that has ever made me even consider such a solution, but having seen this I’d think twice before investing. Thanks for sharing - we’re all accident prone in our increasingly dangerous environment... it just means you get out there! Continue to keep safe 😁👍

After all, it's not just about driving on ice. Ice is dangerous anyway, so you should avoid it at all costs. But it's the roads that are sometimes slightly icy, but where you can't see the ice. That's the problem. These winter tires have yes not only the spikes but a completely different rubber compound, which is still very grippy at lower temperatures. Clearly, if it is 20 ° C in the winter and you have to drive on asphalt, then you actually want to die. I fell once with the Schwalbe Marathons Plus in a corner that was icy. For a year I have had knee problems through it (I drive every day 20km, summer and winter). Schwalbe Marathons are not suitable for cold temperatures, perhaps these were also slightly too hard inflated. So, if you recognize the ice you can get off, go slow or take a bus. But if you are sure and flies at 30km / h from the curve because you have not seen / expected the ice then it hurts.
Would I drive again with spikes? no, for the 5 snow days a year I do not make the more on it. Would I go with the Schwalbe Hurricane on the Gravel Bike also in winter? no, since I would take but rather wider quicker cross tires with more profile

Maybe it would be good for you to mount studded tires on your Dahon/beater bike? I'm using winter tires on my full sized commuter for the first season. Just a little extra security for my long commute but I hope I don't get flats from the studs poking out the back!

I ride the same tires on my regular bike every winter. I've been using mine for the last 5 years and never had the studs poke a hole inside the tire. My problem is rather lookings the studs and the studs rusting.

I believe you can actually get snow chains for MTB tyres but you need to be really careful about not impeding your brakes and close tolerances with the frame etc - the downside is snow chains, like the studs on your tyres, would also trash your tyres if you use them on ice/tarmac rather than snow which is their primary function. I think the best solution would be the snow 'socks' you can buy for car tyres but I haven't yet found a cycle tyre version, I did read on a forum of people using many cable ties all the way round the wheel with the 'lock' part outermost and acting as a stud - mixed reviews but as they wont damage your tyre maybe worth a try ? nice vid mate

Interesting evaluation. With ice, I doubt that wheel size comes into the equation, unlike when you ride into e.g. a pile of sand, which I need to be aware of on coastal roads. Surely there's the scope for the manufacturers to develop some fit for purpose tyres? Schwalbe's generally in my experience are not very good.

I have to ask: Did you use them with the full pressure? If you do so, use them with a lower pressure so you have a flat profile on the ground. They will work better.

I think I ran them at 50 psi or 3.45 bar. Maybe is should have ran them lower?

    • @stephanschmitz9651
      @stephanschmitz9651 3 роки тому +1

@@ibikeunfolded The pressure range of this tire is from 4.5 to 8.0 bar. Maybe you are to low and your tire swim. 8.0 is the maximal pressure and the tire will have an round profile. Try to go down from 8bar as much as youneed to get an flat area on the street. Not flat like after an puncture, but the spikes have only grip when they sit on the ground. With a round profile they have not enough grip.
      Hope it helps

Are all those houses really just made of wood?
Those are snow tyres in the video. Not really a whole lot of good on hard packed ice.. and even worse on hard tarmac surfaces. If the studs can't sink into something softish ALL the time, they are punched through the tyre instead..
    Stands to reason, really.
Now, something to try on disc brake bikes, not Bromptons, are multiple zip-ties round tyre and rim together. Zip-ties are cheap now, and are a lot quicker to fit/take off than swapping tyres.
