Lure fishing the lower Ovens River

- The current high water level in the Ovens River is making boating much easier than normal. As a result Dad and I were able to drift a long way down the river casting lures for Murray cod and yellowbelly.
The humming in the background is my dads 4 stroke outboard motor. He left it idling so that he could quickly back us out from the bank each time the current pushed us in too close.

A great day with ya dad. Good fish as a bonus Robbie.
Thanks so much mate.
Happy chappies is all I can say thanks guys
Thanks so much for watching.
Mate, have you ever done a “a day in the life” video. I get the impression you do a lot of driving, as well as fishing. I’m intrigued to know what an average busy day looks like. Cheers
He Jeff boom lolollololololo
Thanks so much for the great suggestion Jeff. I will keep this idea up my sleeve.
Brilliant idea this
@@robbiefishing im depressed...no where

@@paulsoutbackgardenaustrali7674 wow Paul I love one and half hours away form dubbo I live on Parkes
One suggestion mate for a cod bait is raw chicken breast all I do is hook a big piece depending on the hook size if it a a small hook a small piece works a treat
Good day fellas , what a lovely bit of filming, rob dads getting the hang of this fishing lol... beautiful fish..thanks guys excellent...stay well and safe.
😎🇬🇧
Thanks so much buddy.
What a special place to fish. I recently ended up in Hospital myself with two fingers well and truly hooked. They say I was the biggest flathead caught that far upstream.
You got some cracking fish Robbie. Thanks for sharing mate.
Haha thanks so much mate. I have ended up in hospital with hooks in my fingers too. A couple of times. LOL
I love that part of the river
Me too mate, beautiful water down there.
NICE!
Great vid robbie
Thanks so much mate.
A gorgeous day out on the water with your Dad and some great fishing too. Priceless!!!
Thanks Larry. Sure was a ripper morning mate.
Great post Robbie
Thanks so much Geoff.
Cheers, good job with hook.
haha Thanks Deb. Biggest thing I have ever caught.
Sheesh Robbie, gotta look after the old fingers mate! Awesome session though, that hybrid looked gorgeous.
Thanks mate. Haha I am getting quite good at pulling hooks out of my fingers. Haha
Talent overdrive here
Thanks so much mate.
Dad nearly caught the same cod twice 🤣🤣🤣
hahaha How funny would that have been. LOL
Best fishing channel
You’re a legend Tyler and very supportive
Thank you so much Tyler.

Great video your dad's great on the engine. You won't be playing the piano for a few days. Mind yourself out there Robbie.
haha Thanks Vincent. My cousin is a very gifted pianist, but not me. I use to play a little bit of electric guitar years ago. Power chords with full distortion. Nothing as clean and clear as your great guitar work.
What special time on the water with your dad. Always take those opportunities to get out together when you can, good on both of you. Oh and you both caught some too - bonus 👍
Thanks for sharing
Love your work
Healthy habits
Thanks so much Moo Moo.
Terry’s such a good fisherman he catches one as soon as he releases one 😉
hahaha Thanks Simon. That was a classic. I would have made entertaining viewing had the rod been pulled out of the boat. LOL
At least you know your hooks are sharp Robbie - if you get the point. That last little cod sure had ambition beyond his capabilities!
Haha Point taken. 🤣🤣 Thanks Frank. That has happened to me way too many times. As a sheer coincidence when I got home I had an email from someone wanting to sponsor me with a 1st aid kit. Haha I Said yes... provided they send me two. One for my review video and one for dads boat. LOL
@@robbiefishing Lol - a first aid kit would only be a band aid solution ...
@@captainfrank01 OMG hahahaha
The water looked great for boating! You both did well, imagine if you landed the first 3 lol. Great video, really enjoyed this one. I hope your finger heals well.
Thanks mate. haha Had I landed all of them it would have been a super successful morning. LOL
That little film at the start was awesome, little bit satisfied I’d say and you getting very good with that bait caster.
Thabks so much Jordan.
I recently went to bright, and fished in the ovens river, I caught 10 trout in one day, at the most popular leisure spot. The ovens river is so damn good. great video!
Thanks so much Noah. The trout season has been amazing. I've been up trout fishing today. I can't get enough of it this year. Haha
Another great video Robbie. Love the hole in the finger
Thanks Darren. haha The finger tip is really itchy now and has 2 small puncture marks. Dr Robbie predicts that I should make a full recovery. LOL
Love the content Robbie 👌
It always bring a smile to my face
slow and steady robbie
G’day Robbie, what a great session mate, you and your dad were on a roll lol. A great day with your father and one to remember….
Cheers mate 🍻
Thanks so much Wayne. He went out and bought a first aid kit for his boat yesterday. Haha
@@robbiefishing that’s great Robbie, now keep those hooks out of your fingers lol
Nice memories of that area of the Ovens fishing with my Grandfather many, many years ago. Big bags of redfin and the occasional cod in those days, never a yellowbelly. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Ross. By the time I came along in the late 70s the big redfin had been replaced by small runted redfin. I remember frothing at the mouth at some of my dads stories from before I was born.
We had millions of reddies and carp, with maybe 1 cod per year if we were lucky.
@@robbiefishing you missed the good redfin by about a decade. Lower Ovens around Cameron's Bend was my favourite.
Love Watching you fishing with your dad it reminds me when I fish with my dad last night I landed my fist cod on a lure it is 41cm last but not lest Happy cod fishen BRAH
Thanks so much mate, and well done on your cos last night. You beauty.
I’m Blake Fuller just letting you know I changed my name thanks mate
Ripper session robbie! This is some of my favourite type of fishing mate.
Thanks buddy. Mine too, I absolutely love it.
My nights aren’t complete without a post from Robbie fishing
You complete the whole package well the fishing one anyway haha
Looking forward to the December mail time
Thanks so much buddy. I'm really looking forward to opening my mail.
@@robbiefishing All good champ I am so pumped to see my letter in there will it be out tomorrow night
Hi Robbie love your videos keep the good content up. Very good
Thanks so much Paul.
Go fish the mud round Shepp, it could be very interesting....you could pull in anything from submerged cars to bodies!
haha and maybe the odd shopping trolley. LOL
@@robbiefishing Definitely, in shepp even the fish have tattoos and smoke white ox. If you ever get that way I can take you to a few good spots.
Good one mate enjoyable way to spend a day 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much Cam.
Seen the post on fishbrain and hot that link straight away,
Definitely worth it 💯 nice seeing you get a few with your dad 👍🏼
Love your work mate

@@robbiefishing yep I hope so
Great video! The ovens river yellowbelly seem to be becoming more common.
Thanks Zaki. They sure are mate thanks to the VFA stocking them.
Hey robbie fishing, can you do a video on what soft plastics to get and how to use it for redfin.
Mate hope ya finger all good I put 1 though my thumb and nail instant hot. super glue the way to go to stop the blood 👍
Got my PB yellow (58cm) on a purple slickback and it is still in the tackle box for another
Thats so awesome, well done mate.
What about that third cast just quietly.. took me straight back to the Shane Warne ball of the century .. classic
hahahaha The Gatting Ball. LOL love it!
I sent a small package to you today. The bloke at Wodonga post office said there was no such PO BOX as 4040 in Wangaratta. I sent it there regardless!! Lol. I hope you get it before Christmas but I wasn’t even sure I could get it posted by then given the massive que at the Wodonga post office! Lol
Thanks mate. Sounds exciting. There sure is a PO box 4040. I check it a couple of times each week. I will keep my eyes open for it. 👍👍
Nice to see you casting lures from a boat Robbie! Not sure I’ve seen you do this before it’s usually Nillahcootie in the boat, good on ya 👌🏼
Thanks Mark. When I first started casting lures for cod back in the 90s I had my own boat and use to do this all the time. That was way back before we needed a boat licence. haha
@@robbiefishing haha that’s awesome!
The fish are biting well at the moment
Hey Nick they sure are mate.
Nice hookups, beautiful river, and a sweet rig. Wondering if you have gone fishing up at wyangla dam. When the water is high, we’ve caught monster catfish and cod.
Thanks mate. I have never been to Wyangala Dam. Hopefully one day I will make it there.
Hey Robbie I presume you launched the boat at Templeton street boat ramp??.. then went down stream? Am I write in saying that?
Nice yella robbie, But that small cod you caught was tiny as, I think my pet Murray cod is bigger😅
hahaha Sure was an ambitious little fish mate.
What sort of boat does your old man have? I’m looking for a new one and want one that’s pretty shmick👌
Hi mate to be perfectly honest I'm not sure what model it is.
He was a very solid yellowbelly Robbie
I am going to be going live in December 24th for Christmas lights looking if holly likes Christmas lights tell her to check it out
Thanks mate
Thanks mate. Sounds great. I will make sure I tell her for you buddy.
@@robbiefishing yeah cheers Robbie I am sure she will love it if she loves it she will no doubt subscribe
You weren’t having the best day landing the fish 😂
Haha
Hey Robbie are you posting tonight
Hi Robbie got a question can you use weedless soft plastics for murray cod and yellow belly fishing or is hard body lures better keep the great videos coming great work
Thanks Ken..you sure can mate. I have a fee older videos of me using them on this channel.
Robbie watch out for flying lures
Hey mate. What's classed as lower Ovens. Peechelba and downstream?
Hi mate, there's no real defining line. I usually just call anything downstream of Wangaratta the Lower Ovens.
What has happened to the Ovens River in Wangaratta there not a lot ov water in it so much for good cod fishing 😪😪
Hi mate I was down there this morning and caught a few. The river is a lot higher than normal for this time of the year.
Hey mate Loretta should make a UA-cam channel it would be awesome she could be as famous as you
Hi mate she did have one called Laurettas Funky Videos. The channel is still there but she doesn't really use it these days.
@@robbiefishing yeah I might subscribe to it just to support her
Very pretty Cod that,
I’d have to release such a cool fish but I am assuming legally because they have no impact on the gene pool the regulations would sit with a cod and not a trout cod.
Thanks Jay. To be honest I am not sure. It would be a very grey area. I doubt that anybody would be fines for keeping one. Firstly they would need to do a DNA test to confirm that it is a hybrid, and then there's the fact that they can't reproduce that comes into play etc...
What size lure do you use for cod robbiefishing
Hi mate, you should be able to see the lures sizes in this video buddy.
Was that around Bright?
No mate, right down the other end if the river closer to Bundalong.
Hey Robbie, are you running braid all the way to the lure?
Hi Sally, yep I sure am.
Ouch that would have hurt what’s your Pb yellowbelly
Haha I e hooked myself plenty of times. You need to be so careful.
PB yella is 62cm mate.
@@robbiefishing cool they say a 60 cm yellowbelly is like catching a 1 meter cod mine is 57 my goal is 60 how big was the one you caught
In the video
@@downunderfishing105 we didn't weigh it, but I reckon about 12lb. It was very fat and heavy. From Lake Hume.
Hey Robbie when are you opening the letter
Hi Matt, hopefully later this week or maybe on the weekend mate.
@@robbiefishing ok can’t wait are you going to make a video of you opening the mail
MY FISH WAS 40 CM
Well done mate.
THINKS
Perhaps I should have sent a bottle of peroxide instead.
Haha
Where is that location?
I know it’s my opinion but I don’t like people keeping cod #catchandrelease
Hey mate the problem with making fish catch and release only is that you are playing straight into the hands of the greenies.
What's the next step after making a species catch and release only?.... total closure. There no more levels of care.
It's VERY important that the greenies and tree huggers see us keep fish from time to time. Fishing for food is a God given right. It's all about moderation.
Also.... I didn't keep a cod, I kept a yellowbelly. LOL
THAT NOT GOOD
