Great demo and advice pal. Thank you.
Good vid mate. I’d love to do some rendering. I’m a self taught plasterer, decorator/multi trader by trade, but the amount of shoddy plastering I had to sort out while painting gave me the desire to learn. UA-cam has literally taught me from scratch and 4 years on I’m the sole plasterer for 4 firms and plaster more than i paint. Rendering is next on the list to try and master
I can render with sand and cement but can't plaster with finish lol
Excellent demonstration on how to apply sand cement render, been a spreading 15 years 👌
Top bloke love watching your videos 👍keep them coming
Glad you like them!
Nice one mate watchin you and listening to you makes me realise i am doin my plastering and render correctly 👍
Been watching your vids for a couple of weeks, finally subscribed, was thinking of getting a new mixer as my old one is knackered but I rarely use it and it’s a massive heavy thing to be loading / unloading and storing, space is a premium and I never thought of using a whisk to do a sand & cement mix, I didn’t think it would handle it but it looks like it does a great job, also the whole open / closed thing was interesting, I don’t do a lot with wet trades myself but occasionally I take on small renovation jobs and this has been a very handy video, thank you 👍
appreciate the video and you sharing your knowledge
Another great video . Cheers for you time.
Thank you! Cheers!
Really good, much better than that all talk and no do plasterer from Leeds!
I’ve recently come across your channel so now looking back as some of your previous vids. Great presentation, explanation and content on all vids I’ve watched so far 😀👍
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for the nice comment
Proper renderer shoulders there mate , years of hard work ! I used to work with a plasterer/ renderer who used to play rugby for Wales - same shoulders, although he could drag around site a 1 ton sack of plastering sand. !
Another fantastic video. Very informative, down to earth and not bursting into music every 2 seconds like every other channel on UA-cam. Loving them! Keep up the great work and Thank you!
Cheers Richard. I feel it could of been better but I'm doing what I can with the jos that I've currently got on and editing takes ages.
Really appreciate nice comments like this though.
Cheers mate 👍👍
Watched your videos you do know what u are talking about bee. Plastering 46 years there's a lot of clowns out there wouldn't pay them in washers
Oh mate. All them rocks, I feel for you 😫 nice job.
Tell me about it
Fantastic video Kirk really enjoying your channel I might try knocking up in my refina tub & leave the cement mixer at home on my next render job! keep the content coming 👌
Cheers stu. To be honest mate I'd never go back to a mixer again. Just get a few tubs and the lad can mix loads up nice and easy
I been laying bricks and blocks for years. Plastering as well. Watch this guy hes content is good and u can see he knows hes stuff. Im sort of right handed.. Ambidextrous so i alsi start on the left. Keep up the content.
Crack on matte. You’re a good bloke great to see spreads with a sense of humour! All the best pal👍
Top advice 👌
Nice vid big man - always satisfying seeing the work coming on. Weetabix being the most important thing 😂
It really is!
Superb buddy some great tips there. Top video. Hate the pink grip. HP12 holds the beads on lovely that’s what a normally use tight 4-6mm hp12. Good 24 hours to go off then apply 12-13 mm K1.
Bricklayer to trade to appreciate your knowledge and tips thanks again.
Ots a pleasure mate thanks for the support on my channel.
We also bed them on but sometimes we nip in the evening and bead up, we just found that pink grip is nice and easy, don't need to mix up and wash buckets out. Then we just got used to using it

🤟🤟
Thanks Kirk!
can’t beat the theory behind rendering, it’s paramount for a good job! you should do the krend follow up tutorial!
Noted!
Hi kirk do you do much rendering sand & cement or is it mostly k rend you do..
Enjoying your videos
It's a bit of both really, seems to be getting more and more k-rend jobs though to be honest
I havent plastered in ten years due to bipolar i hope to get back into it this year but its a struggle any tips for me kirk
@michaelrodgers7742 try and work with someone who understands your situation mate, dont commit yourself to all sorts of work because when your low on mood and energy last thing you will want to do is graft, start doing a couple days here an there if you can find it
Awesome vid!!! Is there a part 2? Would love to see the end result, k Rend going on etc
great video man
Top man learnt loads
Great commentary.
I try
Class bud
Cheer Rock&roll 👍👍👍
Top Video
Thanks!
Is the top coat the same as base coat? I mean same 4 sand and 1 cement and water proofer? Thanks.. Might be rendering a breeze block garden wall if we get decent weather this year.
Nice description man.
Too video as always
Like this top video bud just like I work
Thanks 👍
Great vid. I’m going to do my first rendering on a garden wall. The bricks aren’t like the ones in this vid as mine are really smooth face. Do I need to add anything to the wall to provide a key other than water?
The other thing about not scratching in lines is the scratch tends to pull apart along the line as it dries, but wavey scratch tends to to be more stable.
thanks so much for your feedback ! would you recommend using an ox speedskim if you were a novice plasterer ?
It won't do any harm aslong as you still hit it with the trowel 3 or 4 times mate
Expansion beads along the way b4 k-rending mate?Great video by the way
Great video, would you start from the right hand side and top to bottom. Im just trying to do this. What sort of float do you use> is it a sponge float?
Yes start from right if your right handed. And if you're trying to get a smooth finish then you need a polyurethane float.
I'd recommend watching the video a few times and watching others from different channels mate.
Everything I've mentioned in the video is vitally important and you can't miss any details out.
Let me know how you get on mate
Not sure were a lot of plasters in the u.k learned to plaster ,but a lefty starts right to left and the opposite for right handed 👍
im right handed and i work left to right, there are no rules , i just like the way i do it , cheers from alister
When I removed a cupboard in my bathroom a patch of old plaster have fallen off the wall so I need to patch it so could you give me some advice on the best way to do it with sand and cement over red bricks.
Finally a real plasterer on youtube...........and not a skimmer
🤣🤣 cheers marko 👍👍
@@Onthetrowel no worries bru . hope you are busy mate
just found you. im hooked, good tips and very helpfull cheers
Exactly the same as below. Brilliant. Are you using a 4 : 1 mix on the top coat also? Have we got much longer to wait for part 2 of the plaster timing video? 🤣.
When sand and cement rendering each consecutive coat of render should be weaker in strength than the one it is going on top of .So for instance if the scratch coat is 3 sand to one cement then the next cost should be at least 4 sand to one cement.
Ah OK. Great. Thanks 😊
I've just posted it now mate, it's a long one 🙈
ua-cam.com/video/zssLiRU4NJM/v-deo.html
I'm just on a job were I've got flat render to do but with it being January was wondering if I should put some frost proofer an accelerator in my mix to make it set faster
You could do but I'd just check the weather an see if we're in for a freeze.
We didn't use any on this job and its been fine mate
I'm just worried it wont set in Time to rub up before dark
Hiya mate , do you need to put an expansion joint in at all on those long runs?
Would this be same mix for adding a bell cast over a window on top of render? Thanks
We gave up using sand/cement render and use GP mortar instead, much easier and makes a nicer job.
Kirk...what ratios are the sand and cement mixes...and do you scratch up for k.rend base costs...and metal lath on the above chipboard base board...Darby's over feather edges a must .m
I use a 4:1 mix mate
Liking the Darby
Cheers Nestor 🍻
@@Onthetrowel would be nice doing some rendering with you some day.
What size is that mixing tub mate ?
U ever used hp12 over a sand and cement scratch/dubbing out coat? If so did it dry out ok? 👍🏻
Hi mate, I was just wondering, with up to 4” thickness of render in places + Krend (base coat + top coat) would you recommend screwing sheets of E.M.L to the brickwork first ?
It's a good shout and in hindsight I could of done that in the bad areas.
Remember though that unless you put eml in each coat it's only supporting the first half an inch scratch coat and after that your back to square one again.
Could be something to consider before we topcoat that wall though mate so thankyou 🙂👍
Btw…..I didn’t know if you wanted tea or coffee? That was proper funny😂😂😂
Send your mate, to toolstation, ask for SPARKS FOR THE ANGLE GRINDER. 😂
No mixer ,,,,no mesh on bricks .no problems,no cracks in a year
If you listen carefully I explain why you can't use mesh with sand and cement and I also explain when the mesh WILL be going in.
Anyway what's wrong with a little crack? You've got one on your arse an your not complaining about that are ya? 😳😉👍
Rend aid with mesh sets a decent base to scratch on to when going over dead brickwork.
The “waterproofing additive” in a base coat on external render is counterintuitive. When internal tanking/damp proofing it makes sense. Are you simply using the waterproofing as a plasticiser ?
Helps with suction control mate
I was just wondering if there was anything between a battery whisk and a mixer and then I saw this video but you don’t say anything about the mains driven whisk could you?
On a two storey building would I start at the highest point and work my way down?
Yes mate
@@Onthetrowel Cheers, love all the videos mate. Keep up the good work
Great information.Subbed.👍.
Nice to have you on board Rich 👍
The joiner will be taking ZERO off that beam! Cement board will be fixed straight to it!
If any planing was happening, it would be before you got near it with render .
So you work down in London by any chance? Need a quality render job on my house.
Don't you use lime in the rendering mix ?
I've been plastering for 40 years and always use lime in a sand cement render
1x1x4 scratch coat 1x1x5 top coat
But a nice video feel for you with the sxxt sand
I like to use lime but there was waterproofer in the mix so lime wasn't an option mate. Cheers for the nice comment
Also have you not tried a 45gallon drum cut in half to mix 👍
Shouldn't you have a cover flashing on top of your lead soaker first
I'm putting beads on with the next coat mate so it will be fine but fair play you've got a sharp eye
Nothing worse than rendering with shit sand, great video sir
Tell me about it, cheers Allen
Why didn’t you put an expansion joint anywhere Kirk? I know you’re going over it with K-Rend but the sand and cement layers will still crack eventually?
There has to be an expansion joint in the brickwork mate, the render doesn't move independently of the background
Would I still need to feather edge if it’s being pebbledashed?
No but I would if you want it nice and flat mate
hi kirk, i like youre vids , but im going to point out , i work left to right , right handed, in the trade coming up to 50 years this is my point that was pathetic how you tried to explain right to left, of course there are no rules how anything is applied, handy hints are great, and will stand by my pathetic comment, i really mean i like youre work ,all the best from alister
Great vid until you called it a handboard 😂👍
🤣🤣 don't start Ross 🤣
so sorry mate love your vids but: government gross debt was £2,436.7 billion at the end of Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2022, equivalent to 101.9% of gross domestic product (GDP). who put this people in charge????
