The moment you mentioned it I started singing Blood on the saddle, and reminiscing because I've been missing from Disneyland for a long time. Fun fact, this is the reason that for a large part one summer, the author John Green sat in the hall of presidents for almost the whole day and wrote. He admits that nothing me wrote there was good, but he sure saw the hall of presidents a lot. When I first visited the Country Bear Jamboree, I went nuts over the decapitated moose heads on the wall. I was traumatized. Then my brother said, "Don't worry. They're not dead. They're standing on the other side of the wall, and poking their heads through." I felt better after that, and my brother's lie made sense when the heads started talking. As it turns out, he had no idea they would start talking; it was just a lucky guess.

      @@pfifltrigg after looking up a bunch of articles/transcripts about this, I *believe* the turkeys are sent to various farms now, though there is some suspicion that they are just killed later in life (i couldn't find a lot of evidence to back this one up tho). they used to be sent to a farm called Frying Pan Park (yikes) but for the past few years, they've been sent to a place called Gobbler's Rest at Virginia Tech's research center where they kinda just chill out/provide DNA samples for research purposes (like genome sequencing and stuff). they mostly only live for a year or two (in one case i saw like 8 months) instead of the 5-10 year lifespan because the turkeys are selectively bred to gain so much weight their bones can't support them (not a complete downer tho! there was another case of a presidential turkey named Courage who lost a bunch of weight thanks to its handlers and it lived for 6 years). i spent about 30 minutes looking this all up anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk,,

    Not just goats! There is an underrated section in the “spider museum” where you can watch actual veterinarians treating the park’s animals. I watched a surgery on a duck through a glass wall. They also have a special phone that you pick up if you have a question and, if they are able to, one of the surgeon’s assistant’s will pick it up and answer any questions you have. It was absolutely incredible. It feels like you are peaking behind the curtain in a way. Where else are you going to be allowed to watch something like that?

    • @JohnSmith-bg2yu

      John Smith magic kingdom is quite different than most. It’s more zoo than theme park. Every animal there requires vet care at some point so why not have a place for guests to watch?

    • @JohnSmith-bg2yu
      @JohnSmith-bg2yu 4 роки тому +57

      @@kokopuppy57342 it still seems kind of weird to me but you're not wrong. and i guess they wouldn't have the phone to ask questions if people weren't interested enough to use it.
      is magic kingdom the one that had the ad campaign where they stressed it was "not a zoo!" but then it turned out to pretty much just be a zoo?

    • @kokopuppy57342
      @kokopuppy57342 4 роки тому +94

      John Smith oops I meant animal kingdom. Magic is the one with the castle. Yes, they do say it’s more than a zoo but it’s basically like a really cool zoo with a few rides. They added pandora (im pretty sure it’s there) since I went last.
      As for the phone lots of people were using it. They also had a speaker that they kept on for most of the operation so you could hear what they were talking about and they did a great job explaining what was happening and encouraging people to use the phone. Most of the little kids had the same dumb kid questions though bit they were super patient and made everyone feel good. The kids only wanted to know the ducks name, how old he was, what his favorite food is etc. only the adults had good questions about the surgery

    • @JohnSmith-bg2yu
      @JohnSmith-bg2yu 4 роки тому +61

      @@kokopuppy57342 wow! so it's like an honest to goodness attraction. it's still kind of surprising to me because it doesn't line up with what i think of as a theme park attraction but i bet it's a good way to introduce kids to veterinary practices and like, help them be less worried when their pets need surgeries.
      now i'm picturing a parent explaining to their kid how the doctor's going to take mittens away to do surgery and the kid's like "just like at disney world?" meanwhile the vet's like "?????" 😂

    On my last trip to Disney, my family took shelter in The Carousel of Progress to escape the rain, along with an entire theatre of people who had the same idea. Little did we know that we'd all be spending the next hour together as the ride broke down and trapped us all in the 1940s, slowly eroding away at our sanity as the show repeated itself on and on and on--seven times, I think. By the time the ride spirits deemed us sufficiently conditioned--indoctrinated--and saw fit to release us to the next decade, we were all together, a bunch of strangers, reciting the dialogue and singing the song. The ride then proceeded to break down again later on, but only for one repetition--as if to test us. We dutifully sang along and were allow to escape our torture, released back to the muggy Floridian landscape.
    It's a treasured experience, and pretty much the only thing I remember from Disney; all my other memories were eclipsed by going to Universal that same week and crying when I walked into Hogsmeade for the first time.

    My friends and I accidentally went to the country bear jamboree because we thought the lobby was just a sitting area. We decided to just go in with the crowd when they said the show was starting because hey we're at Disney World might as well. Going in completely blind with no idea what was about to happen was the best way to experience this masterpiece. I thought we were going to aneurysm when Big Al started singing about blood because we were laughing so hard. We raved about it all night, it was the highlight of the day.

      I had a similar experience, only I was at Tokyo Disney so all the songs apart from one were in Japanese (which I don't understand very well) which included the lyric 'every guy that turns me on turns me down' - we completely lost it. Worse still at the time my friends and I went in there was a parade happening right outside as it was near Easter so everyone was watching that which lead to me and my 2 friends being trapped having no idea what was happening with random Disney employees scattered around - we hadn't noticed them until they started clapping and we straight up thought we were going to be murdered.

      Accidental Disney moments are the best. My cousin and I spent a few days at Disney when she was 17 and I was 18 or 19. At the time, Magic Kingdom had the Mickey Mouse birthday land and we got into a line because it was in an air conditioned building. Had no idea what it was for but it was hot out and we wanted to cool off. After about 20 minutes, I realized what we were queued up for... to meet Mickey Mouse himself! LOL I wish I still had those pictures... not sure what happened to them. I did find a photo not too long ago of her and I huddled under one poncho at Epcot in a horrendous rainstorm. The other poncho suffered an untimely shredded death. Some cast member saw us huddled on a bench under one poncho laughing our butts off over the situation and offered to take our picture. Good memories. :)

    My most favorite memory of visiting Disneyland, was when I was walking through Toontown with my younger brother and ex, and spotted someone's digital camera on the ground, because while my brother and ex wanted to be total dillweeds and keep it, I marched us all the way across the park to the Lost & Found to turn it in. Because I did that, the lady working behind the counter had me sign my name in a book (I think), and then gave me an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland button for my good deed. I proudly wore the button for the rest of the trip, absolutely beaming as if I were a kid again (and I was 21).

Can't wait to ride the Peoplemover and pet the goats!
    But really, I also felt encouraged to share the things I like, even if they might seem lame to some people, because it might resonant or just be entertaining to the right people. So Jenny, not to go all Flynn Rider on you, but thanks for helping me find a new dream!

    No one will see this but I have to tell someone that the reason Carousel of Progress stops so much is because whenever someone goes out the emergency exit door in the middle of the ride the system freaks out and refuses to move because it doesn't want the hypothetical person at the door to get crushed, so it just starts the current scene again. Which people don't want to see again so...they go out the emergency exit. Which causes the scene to repeat again. So you get in a nightmare spiral of constant leaving and repeating, and the only ethical way out is to finish the whole thing, because otherwise you doom everyone else inside. This is exactly how I feel about egg salad sandwiches from convenience stores in Japan. I am not exaggerating when I say that I average one a day every time I come here (and I've been here for 90 days on this current visit). If I see one I will buy it, even if I just had one 12 hours ago, or I'm not really in the mood. I will buy and eat it just because I know I can't find its equal in the US. And the thing is, I seldom eat egg salad sandwiches in the US unless I make my own, and the egg salad I make is nothing like the somewhat bland egg salad they have in those sandwiches.

      Hmmm, I live on Oahu and we (used to) get a lot of Japanese tourists and there are also many American's of Japanese descent living here for generations as well. Because of this, we have quite a few Japanese-style things on offer here to cater to both of these groups as well as the "local" population that has become a true melting pot of various cultures. It's actually one of the best things about living here. At least for this haole from the mainland, it is. It's like what the rest of the US would be like if we truly were the country that we sell ourselves as to the rest of the world and our own citizenry (at least in this one respect. We still have plenty of the same problems as the rest of the country). But I digress... The point I wanted to bring up is that I love egg salad sandwiches. I never really thought about Japan being a place for a great egg salad sandwich, but now that you mention it, it seems like the kind of thing that they would excel at. Especially of the pre-packaged, convenience store variety. And now that I think of it I know I've seen them in ABC Stores and 7-11s. I'm sure they have the same quality Japanese-style egg salad sandwiches here for all these reasons, or if just to cater to the Japanese tourist market for a little piece of home while abroad. So now I must seek out these egg salad sandwiches locally and have one today! I will report back on my success or failures. Is there anything I should look for in seeking out the perfect specimen? Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa!

    - cars land. Cars land at day? Wonderful, feels so much like a small highway town in southern Utah. Cars land at night? Life changing. Just like, go sit outside of flo’s V8 and just chill, or like just behind the cozy cone lobby building? It’s so nice I love it there.
    - the benches next to the rivers of America at the intersection of new Orleans square, frontier land, and adventure land. Something interesting is always going on, wether it’s the bootstrappers (my beloved) the jazz band at the French market, the mark twain, something on Tom sawyers island, characters coming in and from the three themed areas, the smell of the popcorn cart and pirates? It’s just the prime Disneyland spot.

    I totally get how little kids could feel cheated after riding Spaceship Earth because of the name, but I’ve always loved how it was named for a concept with such optimism. Adlai Stevenson said it best: “We travel together, passengers on a little space ship, dependent on its vulnerable reserves of air and soil; all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave-to the ancient enemies of man-half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all.”

    I enjoy memorizing all those "for your safety" messages before you get on a ride so I can prefectly mouth them along with the speaker and feel proud of myself.

      I know the haunted mansion one by heart “Take your loved ones by the hand, please, and watch your step. Oh yes, and no flash pictures, please. We spirits are frightfully sensitive to bright lights. Do not pull down on the safety bar, please. I will lower it for you. And heed this warning: the spirits will materialize only if you remain seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside. And watch your children, please.”

      Disneyland's Pirates has the best safety narration, from the horrifying talking skull, you get two different ones depending on timing.
      But Big Thunder's is obviously the most quotable.
      "Howdy partners. For your safety, make sure you have your hands, arms, feet, and legs, inside the vehicle, and be sure to watch your kids! If you have any hats or glasses, best to remove them, cuz this here's the WILDEST RIDE inna WILDERNESSSSSSSSSSSSSS"

    when my friend and I went she really loves Tangled so when we got to the Tangled area (I guess, it's just like a town center square like thing with old castle buildings surrounding the circle floor outside) anyway, she freaked out and me and my other friend had to just kinda stand there while she "soaked in the view and feels" of her fav place on earth. she'd never been to disney world before so we actually had to do that for a lot of the special areas but that one took the longest by far. i will say it was kinda cute watching this 22 year old girl just standing in the center of the street just smiling at everything and taking deep dramatic breaths of air lol but i bet people thought me and my other friend were her parents or something just standing awkwardly off to the side taking pics for her

    So in Disney there's supposed to be trashcans within something like 27-30 ft of you at all times. So whenever we go, at any time anyone of us can say "trashcan" to another, and that person must stop, find the closest trashcan, and count how many steps away it is. None of us have ever passed 22 steps, and we were passholders for 3 years.

    A couple things happened to me on one really good trip:
    First, I went to California Adventure to attend a showing at the Animation Academy. At that time I was dreaming of becoming a Disney animator, so of course I just loved the show itself. But then the guy conducting the class (Noel I think) brought me up to his desk afterward and gave me a couple of his drawings and this amazing "follow your dreams" speech. Still have his drawings and the pics I got with him ten years later. Super lovely man. I think he's still doing the classes too, so y'all should check him out after COVID's under control.
    And later that night, back in Disneyland, I went to the Golden Horseshoe Saloon. I went buy my parents a couple sodas, only to have the cashier be like "oh hey you're the 100th customer today" and they gave me a free banana split (maybe it was ice cream nachos??). Me, a temporarily unsupervised 12-year-old, was given this massive bowl of ice cream and left to my own devices.
    It goes without saying that while the scenery, the treats, the shows, the rides all make for a great experience, it's the employees that make it a perfect experience. So thank you to the Disney employees that make each trip special.

    My parents took me to Disney when i was like 7 and what I remember most is unfortunately the carousel of progress. My dad saw it and RAN to it like it was gonna be the best fucking ride and we all regretted it as soon as we were trapped in there.
    After it rotated to the 4th scene or so he leaned over to my mum and just whispered “I’m really sorry.”

    My Favorite "Lame" Things To Do At Disney In No Particular Order
    1. Explore Restaurantasaurus and Columbia Harbor House
    2. Ride Spaceship Earth (which is an attraction I've loved since I was like five)
    3. Get carrot cake cookies at The Writer's Stop (RIP)
    4. Watch the street shows throughout World Showcase
    5. Visit Club Cool
    6. Not sure how boring other park-goers think this is, but I really like looking around at the queues for Expedition Everest and Jungle Cruise.
    Also thank you for reminding me how much fun Country Bears Jamboree is!

    Hooray People Mover! Last time I was on that myself and my colleagues pretended it was a high speed roller coaster and we all had our arms up and were hootin' and hollering as if we were going 70 mph not 7... until one of the park employees yelled at us over a hidden loudspeaker to cut it out and put our arms down.
