I saw an interview with Ms. Hynde in which she said that everything since Honeyman-Scott's and Farndon's passing has been a tribute to them. I find it amazing that she can sing this at all...
Never heard their version of this Neil Young classic--no one does it like Neil, of course, but this is a heartfelt and heart-pounding interpretation. Conclusion: like.
Chrissy always does it with class. One of the best covers of this tune. I didn't realize that the Pretenders had lost 2 members over heroin addiction Back on the Chain Gang is another gem about the same thing.
Incredibly strong woman singing from the heart. All true to her heart and the losses she endured during those crazy years. Amazed I'm still here when I think back on it all. Milk blood to keep from runnin out. Jewel doesn't have a clue.
.............I really appreciate this terrific version of Neil Young's heart felt music. I am truly grateful for The Pretender's talent and I'm grateful Chrissie Hynde found a place loving enough to continue the art of her brother musicians.
im a 45 y.o. punk and recovered junky....this song and version makes me sob.ive buried 9 of my best friends and it never stops calling you back. off the subject, ive seen them 3 times here in detroit and every show was better than the last.
None of the people below seem to realize she lost two of her men on the Pretenders by the needle and the damage done. Another great track about that loss is found on "Back on the chain gang"
Peter Heinen James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon. IF you watch some of the earlier videos (brass in pocket, tatooed love boys) you can see them. It's strange to think that half of the band would be gone within a couple of years. She (Chrissy) make a poignant comment about them when The Pretenders were inducted into the hall of Fame.
Nina Peyser Nina, Neil Young wrote this song. Chrissie has a personal connection to the lyrics. She has seen the damage heroin inflicts on people. Neil Young wrote this song though and played it for the first time in the early 70's. Peace!
I love their rendition of this song. I remember when this aired for the grand opening of the rock and roll hall of fame and being blown away by the performance.
Brought there first Album have done ever since , seen them Nararra 84 Australia ....Brilliant job as always by Martin Chambers ...................Love you Chrissy ...................xx
I've known this song since the early seventies and I've always found it chilling. I am indeed aware of the terrible losses sustained by The Pretenders, and I imagine Christie Hynde must have felt a bond with the song when she first heard it.
chrisse you are bad to the core, stay cool always, love your voice and your stance when your getting into the music .You are as good as any female vocalist guitarist ever, its your style thats makes you so amazing and your sincerness.playing with all the emotion. your friend always rod aspen
AT 1:29....YOU KNOW SHE'S THINKING, FEELING JIMMY N PETE. TRULY. Danielle in 2019. Had the chance to see the original four in 80 N 81. RIP HEREFORD LADS. GOD REST YOU N YOURS.
Refreshing to hear a band not trying to outdo Neil by trying to sound like Neil with this song, Dave Matthews, Jewel etc. More like the Pretenders do a Neil and Crazy Horse version.
Glad I found this! Thanks oldsoold. The Queen of Rock covers Neil. Possibly the best version I've heard. Barring Neil's original of course. Don't hear it played electric very often. The band rocks it.
Chrissy Is the first lady of Rock... They played a show at the old Coliseum in Houston Texas, and literally, acoustic tiles were falling out of the ceiling !!! Great show!!
Chrissie singing Neil, the best of both. Very few can cover Neil and make it sound good, she sure did! Might be because it was heartfelt in both of their cases.
. . the Marines are in Afghanistan guarding the poppies so the man can get in on the action. The man wears a suit and tie and says vote for me. . . war is a racket
Adam seymour did a great job in his run with the pretenders. The guy playing guitar these days for her i ca''nt even bear to watch with his cliche raaaawk. Moves Noone could ever replace jimmy , but adam captured something of his vibe alongside his own style, and it was good
I don't hate Tommy. Anyone who met him, says he was an absolutely lovely guy. Don't get me wrong, he was an impressive guitar player, he had some great color in his playing, did a fine ole job on Purple's 'Come Taste the Band'. I just reckon he couldn't cut it on stage with Purple.. perhaps they were a little too structured for him, plus they had a huge and loyal fanbase, who really knew their catalog. I know Tommy suffered a lot at the hands of the Blackmore faithfuls, that's unfortunate.
Chrissie is one of a kind. This is a rocked out version of the song. PERFECT. Jewel looked like a little girl on stage when she did it. Chrissie looks like a Rock Goddess. BTW, that bassist looks like the needle did a little damage to him.
======== mickey19695 wrote --- this was performed at the opening of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She shouts -- "Cleveland!" at the end. This makes sense -- but what is the date?
Chrissie Hynde is a total badass. In the '70s she was in fucking charge of her band when few women were. But do not ever forget Patti Smith when mentioning Chrissie, Joan Jett, or any of the other ass-kicking women of R&R.
she has this stage presence that is uncanny. what a woman!!!!
Wonderful version of Neil Young's legendary song. Lost my son to "The Damage Done" Keep the fight on!
I'm so sorry.
:'-( I am so sorry. May there be healing in your heart, mind, and soul.
Hey hey hey more power to you please stay strong im struggling to survive
I lost my brother . 14 yr ago . The Damage is broad and life long effect
Thank you in here for your loving comments!

Edi W. Neil young is my favorite songwriter, his voice is unbelieveable
Neil Young inducted the Pretenders into the R and R Hall of Fame. They played together and it was great. Love them both.
Chrissy always does it with class. One of the best covers of this tune. I didn't realize that the Pretenders had lost 2 members over heroin addiction Back on the Chain Gang is another gem about the same thing.

Que d'émotions contenues dans cette chanson. Particulièrement chantée par Chrissie. J'en suis bouleversée à chaque fois.
Thanks for posting.
I have loved Chrissie Hynde forever... she's legend.
Agreed....She was "IT" in the 80's before it was "IN"
YES!
An Icon.
.............I really appreciate this terrific version of Neil Young's heart felt music. I am truly grateful for The Pretender's talent and I'm grateful Chrissie Hynde found a place loving enough to continue the art of her brother musicians.
Haunting and beautiful cover of the classic. Superb!!
WOW CHRISSIE !!! those legs and guitar are priceless... so gifted.
incredible live she sings with such emotion your heart cries

I often come to listen it and it is still the same thrill...
RIP Pete and James.

Gandalf Mantooth I did not know that Chris hynde wrote the song. I always thought Neil Young wrote it. She is very talented!!!!
Yeah Peter..the cover makes more sense when you know the history of the band and plus Neil Young played on her album.
Nina Peyser Nina, Neil Young wrote this song. Chrissie has a personal connection to the lyrics. She has seen the damage heroin inflicts on people. Neil Young wrote this song though and played it for the first time in the early 70's. Peace!
Peter Heinen Honeyman-Scott died from cocaine :(
She definitely put her mark on it. I still like it better acoustic but there's no questioning her clear, strong, pure voice.
I love their rendition of this song. I remember when this aired for the grand opening of the rock and roll hall of fame and being blown away by the performance.

I had not seen this, Chrissie and the Boys do a phenomenal version. That's how you show respect to the writer yet make it your own.
She is coolness in it's purist form.
Love her rendition. 4VR classic. Peace & Psilocybin
Great, great cover. Wonderful to hear an artist doing this fine song her own way, rather than just doing a poor imitation.
I really like this cover. Chrissie is Rock n Roll.
Superb cover !
Chrissie is the best singer in the last century, period.
I have always wished this song was longer. I like this version, well done.
Great cover. Love the heart of it.
She does every song proud .Always loved her voice
Thanks for posting..good song.
Chrissie is amazing! At her best here. Sung with true heart!
That Nice Chrissie Hynde sound. I love it. Send the Pretenders from hot spot to hot spot all over the world.
Thanks so much for posting it. It moves me.

Great song. Oldie and goodie

she is so amazing. is there anything Chrissie can't do?
She can't be weak or cruel.
AlicedeTocqueville n
live forever
Glad I found this! Thanks oldsoold. The Queen of Rock covers Neil. Possibly the best version I've heard. Barring Neil's original of course. Don't hear it played electric very often. The band rocks it.
Paradise is a parking lot or a skyscraper now but, don't you, forget about me! Love to see you back in Ohio.
Chrissy Is the first lady of Rock... They played a show at the old Coliseum in Houston Texas, and literally, acoustic tiles were falling out of the ceiling !!! Great show!!
Tears To All Those I Lost. I Survived and I don't Know Why. Don't Mess With The Needle or The Spoon.
Chrissie's a national treasure
I Love Chrissie very much. She's a super star of Rock'n Roll! She's the one. Nobory is better Chrissie!🤗
Fantastic
I love Hynde,
Αγαπώ τους Pretenders
Keep on conning in the free world!
Chrissie is timeless.....
Love The Pretenders. This is a complete trainwreck.
I Love this ......
One of N. Young's best songs.
That's how you cover a song.
Other than Keith Richards, no one retires in a life of glamour after the needle......stay away man......no one wins that fight
kinda rare for her to do other artists' songs but I like this.
Chrissie singing Neil, the best of both. Very few can cover Neil and make it sound good, she sure did! Might be because it was heartfelt in both of their cases.
This wreaks me.
god,i love this woman.... and more when she sings this classic from neil young
I sing this song because I loved the man..I know that some of you don't understand!
Neil
with jangly guitars
and Chrissie
heaven!
she's just made of raw integrity
and human sex
O que ela passou na vida resultaram na pessoa q ela é. Eu comecei a ouvir o seu som a 3a, e fiquei apaixonado por ela. É isso.
Heartbreaking.
Trying not to speak out of turn, but I believe Mr. Young would be proud.
L J Lowrey he still alive

I believe you are correct sir! I saw him perform this live in 2011. Just him and his guitar just like when he did it originally! Awesome!
she knows of what she sings
. . the Marines are in Afghanistan guarding the poppies so the man can get in on the action. The man wears a suit and tie and says vote for me. . . war is a racket

@oldredun Thanks for setting it straight. I was about to write the same.
She loved one of them too, and it put her back on the chain gang.

Buenísima!!!
I agree.
James Honeyman-Scott (4 November 1956 - 16 June 1982)
never knew they did a version I do remember way back her talking bout how they lost band members. Has she done anythng lately
She just released a new album in July of 2014. She's still kicking a$$ after 35 years and making that money!
WOW!!!
Chrissie Hynde is a total badass. In the '70s she was in fucking charge of her band when few women were. But do not ever forget Patti Smith when mentioning Chrissie, Joan Jett, or any of the other ass-kicking women of R&R.
je suis le 900ème à aimer ce morceau !!
who is this? is it really Chrissie Hynde? Yes, she is divine.
Bad ass!
I love you Baby, can I have some more....
