I'm 56. I experienced joy when this dropped in 1982, and a very deep bittersweet melancholy watching it now. It reminds me of how much we have lost, from a time despite having mountains of troubles and terrible problems, still felt hopeful and optimistic - And so much cooler and real.
I feel exactly the same way. This was always a favorite on MTV - as with so many 1980’s songs, they were fresh, upbeat and positive. The world was ours, even for only a few seconds.

Life was SO fun and stress free. I miss the 80's and the 'days of my youth'. Songs bring those great memories flooding back and filling my eyes with tears,,,, remembering....
This entire album is a masterpiece from beginning to end. When you realize the complexity of some of the bass lines and realize she was wailing out this emotionally charged poetry it's really incredible. One of my all time favorite albums
I'm 71, whoo hoo, and I love this song. It's a mix of sadness, fond memories, regret, but ultimately lasting love that can't be taken away. The message being Love conquers all.
The song was dedicated to the late James Honeyman-Scott who died before this was recorded. Former bandmate Pete Farndon died around the time this song peaked. All 1983 songs are past 40 but it seems like yesterday. I got out the old MTV videos on DVD and started watching them. What a year for music !! Many of these classics bring me to tears (happy ones) these days.
If anything, 80s were good because America had a good sized middle class in in the 60s and 70s.... then the Wall Street greed-mucks destroyed Middle America.
The melody, the instruments, the lyrics ("bring me to my knees, when I see what they've done to you" and "I found a picture of you, those were the happiest days of my life") are so powerful, this is one of my top 3 songs of the Rock Era. Thank you, Pretenders, thank you, Chrissie, for this genuine gem
The ending, with the guitar chiming guitar ascending, and Chrissie's rueful "wretched life of a lonely heart" always brought a lump to my throat... "Birds of Paradise" on Pretenders II is a very similar song about a lost love.

The five I think I was 23 or 24 when it came out and I was having a tough time in school felt like I was on the chain gang but you know very weird way the song kind of inspired me to keep going because it’s like that’s what life is all about you can’t give up it might seem hard it might seem like you’re on the chain gang but what’s the alternative? You just have to keep going powers it be forces to live like we do bring me to my knees, when I see what they’ve done to you, but I stand, I die stand here today knowing the deep in my heart, they’ll fall to ruin one day for making us part I like that part about them falling to ruin, and hopefully someday the power. Hopefully someday the powers that be will fall to pieces I pray for that the New World order capitalism communism every ism just falls apart and we can just live and freedom and any quality. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the quality, not quality qualities, important equality you put an E in front of quality there you go
Great musicianship. Unparalleled vocals-her voice is their most impressive instrument. Dark, deep, emotional and thought provoking lyrics. This is a perfect song. I rank it among the best of the rock era.
... In fact, her voice is so good it makes her guitar work go largely un-noticed - and that's pretty solid stuff, her riffs rivalize those of the Rolling Stones.
Will always love Chrissie Hynde. Saw her and Pretenders at a show in Phoenix in 2008 or 2009. Because the show as not quite sold out, she moved the audience members down to the first 10 rows or so. What a classy move! And a terrific show! Thank You, Chrissie!
I’m 63. Graduated from college in 1983. This was one of the first videos I watched when I came home from college and vegged out watching MTV. Love the Pretenders. ❤️❤️❤️
Probably my favourite song of all time...for the tune, Chrissie's voice, the jingly-jangly guitars and that lovely line "those were the happiest days of my life" - it makes me think of family time and my two girls growing up. 💕💕

I'm 58. This has always been my favorite Pretenders song. It's always made me tear up, and I really don't know why - just that feeling of nostalgia, I guess. I saw the Pretenders live a few years ago - apparently it makes Chrissie Hynde tear up too. I think she said once that it always reminds her of James Honeyman-Scott, who died right before it was recorded.
@@josorr 9/11 People tumbling through the air in business clothes. Climbing up to dig out. Not as evident as "We Built This CIty" by Starship though. Or "Boy in the Bubble" by Paul Simon.
a perfect pop song. the best pop song from the 1980s and a rarity in that the more I hear it, the more bittersweet and perfect it shows itself to be. the lyrics express complex emotions regarding addiction, rupturing relationships and the gender roles we find ourselves playing out even when they don't fit. with songs like this, 2000 miles, precious, show me etc....Christie hynde is massively underrated
A truly iconic song, a landmark of epic value. It is one of my group of songs that are a part of the things that define my life's experiences. Such amazing music, voice and performance. I am 67 and won't quit listening music like this.
Makes me feel better, I'm 68,and yes I will continue to listen to whatever floats my boat. This is one of those songs that after I heard it the first time, it was placed on my list of unforgettables.
I am 22 year old from India, I have no idea how I stumbled upon this masterpiece on Spotify and fell in love with this song instantly, I have listened to this for days now and finally watching the video... The lyrics are just beautiful and soo true..... The lyrics "circumstance beyond our control, foreign TV and news of the world" , reminds me of 2020 and the covid lockdown as many of my relationships got lost in those times...
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG. THE WORDS JUST FLOOR ME....! So many moments of my life come rushing back everytime I hear this.Sadly they are come and gone but I CHERISH EACH MEMORY. OMG...WOW. CHRISSIE'S VOICE..." I FOUND A PICTURE OF YOU, OOOOOOH...!"❤ I played in a band around 1990 and we played this song at a 4th of July bash in the middle of a hot day. The wind was slightly blowing cooling the day a bit and I had chills up my back when the crowd cheered and got caught up in the moment. Yeah, "THOSE WERE THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF MY LIFE...!!" THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.
In 1984 I was in the US Navy and deployed to the Indian Ocean for many months straight on a Guided Missile Destroyer. I played the Learning to Crawl tape pretty much endlessly standing the 2000 to 0800 watch 7 days a week and this by far my favorite song from that.
Such a fabulous song. Timeless. The beat, guitars, vocals, lyrics... masterful. Purchased the cassette back in the day. It was the first record I had that my older brother (by 5 yrs) ever wanted to borrow, and we talked about Chrissie Hynde and the band. He shared his Pretenders I & II vinyl and got me into their earlier tracks. Few years down the road my brother couldn't beat cancer and now this song of loss hits pretty deep with me. I think of him every time I hear it and I search out the album when I need to. The jangle guitar chugging drum beat outro may be the finest music ever recorded.
Oh I’m so sorry you lost your brother. I would be completely lost without my brothers. I adore them. My parents played this record a lot when I was little and it brings back so many happy memories of them dancing with each other and laughing. I was born in 1980 so now I’m looking back & going “my parents were so much cooler than I gave them credit for!” Gosh, her voice is just… there’s nothing else like it!!!
Tudo se "encaixou" bem neste pop rock e até hoje, dificilmente se ouve um instrumental tão bem feito. Chrissie Hynde foi essencial na interpretação desta canção. Soube sincronizar, como ninguém, sua voz com a música....
She was at Kent state during the shootings. Her voice, lyrics, music Anerican. The brits were her bread and butter because of the huge talent behind her.
“The phone, the TV and the News Of The World” - wow, that opening guitar riff. I’ll always remember that spring: springtime in London & springtime in Toronto . . . .
This song stirs up a lot of memories and emotions of my 80s growing up, those were great days. How Beautiful things were those days. This song being something that remains as beautiful as it was on its release
I cant believe this song is from 1982! It seemed 10 - 15 yrs ahead of it's time. Later Alternative artists like Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow & Sarah McLaughlin were doing very similar stuff like it was new....but Chrissi and the Pretenders hit close to the same vein many years before.
What a great song 🎵 👌 👏 ❤️ It just sparkles with charisma , melody and catchieness. Chrissie Hynde's voice is amazing: strong , distinctive and yet inviting all at the same time.
"Circumstance beyond our control, the phone, the TV and the news of the world. Got in the house like a pigeon from hell. Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies." So true, especially today!!!

“ I die as I stand here today, knowing that deep in my heart, they fall to ruin one day, for making us part “ God, so heartbreaking and the way she delivers that, her voice, this is such a great song.
I have loved this song for YEARS! Specifically the beautiful riff at the closing. Its such a versatile little melody, probably used in a bunch of songs over the years
I love the guitar work. Not extremely difficult but is perfect for this song. The lyrics are excellent. I was 30yrs old when this song came out and i still put it on blast when i hear it.

This song really encapsulates the spirit of 1983. I could go on all day about how much talent, novelty, freedom and pure human spirit there was in those times. You could drive anywhere, park anywhere, smoke anywhere, have a beer anywhere, make a joke about anything, and if you put your mind to it you could accomplish literally anything. Look at old footage of the crowd at any concert in the 1980s. There was a spark of life in people's eyes. That has all been lost. I truly, sincerely miss the 1980s.

"Well, I'll die as I stand here today
Knowing that deep in my heart
They'll fall to ruin one day
For making us part"
The song was dedicated to the late James Honeyman-Scott who died before this was recorded. Former bandmate Pete Farndon died around the time this song peaked. All 1983 songs are past 40 but it seems like yesterday. I got out the old MTV videos on DVD and started watching them. What a year for music !! Many of these classics bring me to tears (happy ones) these days.
Totally feel the despair in this song....great songwriting at it's realist!
@@jorgetorrico6515 I felt that too when it came out.
"... knowing that deep in my heart, they'll fall to ruin one day, for making us part". Heard it thousands of times, and it still gets me.

What a great song of an amazing woman. Chrissie Hynde is a hero and role model. Thank you for this gem.
I've always loved how punk she looks but her lyrics and songs have softness to them
Fantastic and lovely woman, since a long time... Wonderful voice.... A very good group...
This song will always be in my top 10 list, no matter what year, no matter what the topic. Timeless classic.
Born in 65 and I couldn’t wait to get older in the 80s now looking around today I wish I could go back to a simpler time and better music.

One of the greatest tracks...Love it...Still wonderful after all these years
The melody, the instruments, the lyrics ("bring me to my knees, when I see what they've done to you" and "I found a picture of you, those were the happiest days of my life") are so powerful, this is one of my top 3 songs of the Rock Era. Thank you, Pretenders, thank you, Chrissie, for this genuine gem
I am one your side
The ending, with the guitar chiming guitar ascending, and Chrissie's rueful "wretched life of a lonely heart" always brought a lump to my throat... "Birds of Paradise" on Pretenders II is a very similar song about a lost love.
You are all correct.:)
Right on!
"Like a break in the battle was your part - in the wretched life of a lonely heart" that, to me, is the saddest and most powerful line.

Hard to believe this hit appeared on the charts 40 years ago! Some hits never die!

I'm 58. This has always been my favorite Pretenders song. It's always made me tear up, and I really don't know why - just that feeling of nostalgia, I guess. Most underrated comments ever
a perfect pop song. the best pop song from the 1980s and a rarity in that the more I hear it, the more bittersweet and perfect it shows itself to be. the lyrics express complex emotions regarding addiction, rupturing relationships and the gender roles we find ourselves playing out even when they don't fit. with songs like this, 2000 miles, precious, show me etc....Christie hynde is massively underrated
A true artist and a independent woman ❤️
Maybe underrated by the Swifties, who just don’t know her. I don’t think Chrissie is underrated.
Wow, this brings back the memories from the good ole days, saw Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders in concert, it was amazing.
