Are Scotland's Wind Turbines Doing More Damage Than Good?

  • I took a walk in one of Central Scotland’s nature reserves and was alarmed to see the lack of wildlife and surrounding deforestation. This got me thinking about Scotland’s wind turbines and how they are damaging nature. These wind turbines are massive and are very prevalent across Scotland, but a lot of them are not spinning. So, are they doing any good or is the effect on nature and the people around these huge machines not worth the investment?
During my walk on this nature reserve, I witnessed deforestation that didn’t happen as much, when I was growing up in Scotland. These large wind turbines didn’t exist back then either. I understand we must move away from fossil fuels but at what cost? It’s food for thought and I think we need to look at alternatives to these countryside eyesores.

Good video Craig. Quite sad to see the damage being done to the trees (the black ones) from the local brewery!

It didn't look like there was any appreciable wind while you were walking. If there's too little wind, basically anything less than 10 mph (and note that the wind speed might be different at turbine height), the turbine won't start. That's just how they're designed.
Not sure how wildlife is affected by turbines, except maybe for some birds crashing into them. For sure, climate change is affecting wildlife.
