    To anyone interested in excellent salmon fishing in stunning surrounds I highly recommend the Drowes salmon fishery, me and my wife and 3 kids have just spent a week there and loved it, we stayed in one of Shanes cottages and it was perfect, lovely and clean spacious and lovely scenery. I fished a couple of mornings and the river is perfect for all methods of salmon fishing, I caught a lovely fresh grilse of around 4 1/2 pounds and also another morning I netted a fine brown trout of around 3 pounds for a french angler staying on the fishery also. It is a very healthy fishery and very well managed, and for everything else besides fishing Donegal and Leitrim the beaches are lovely for familes and a host of other activities for the family I cannot recommend the fishery enough and the owner Shane Gallagher is a genuine gentleman friendly and helpful and very generous. We loved it there and we will be back,

    • @rosfriar
      @rosfriar  5 років тому

      Hi Juan, catch & release is not mandatory on all Irish rivers with an identified surplus as calculated by the standing scientific committee. The identified surplus for the river Drowes for 2019 is 2648. Anglers are also restricted by yearly and seasonal quotas, eg. 3 fish up to 12th May and 10 fish in total in any one year.

      Jay M it’s more about dwindling numbers of fish than being ethical for me when I C&R

    • @aaronwilliamwallace
      @aaronwilliamwallace 2 роки тому +1

      @Jay M the Atlantic Salmon Reserve ran a study examining wether Catch and Release leads to salmon dying post-release or not. They radio tagged 50 fish caught on rod and line. By the end of the season all 50 fish had made it to spawning areas. Catch and release is necessary in my opinion. Salmon populations are decimated and declining everywhere apart from the Kola Peninsula and parts of Canada.

    In 1980 survey of Irish Rivers of which there was 520 in number supportion eels,Trout and Salmon by 2016 only 20 Rivers
    in this Survey passed the Water Quality Test to support any of These Species ,
    In 2006 the Irish Government along with the Inland Fisheries who control the Fishing Rights of all These Rivers banned the
    Traditional Seasonal inshore Drift Net Fishing.
    This had a devastating effect on all the small Fishing Communities all along the Western Counties From Donegal to Cork,
    The Irish Navy was instructed to harass and lift all the Nets of Licensed Traditional Fishing Communities in May and June of that
    year,
    The Government at that time said that it was an EU directive which was a lie as the EU in Brussels said it was a decision
    made by the Irish Government Themselves,
    They then Proceed to put pressure on the EU to make an official announcement in November 2006 to instigate a complete
    ban on these Traditional Families who only fished for a week or 2 in June Weather Permitting,
    One would have Thought that if proper attention was paid to the River Surveys over the Years that the real Pollution Culprits
    would have been sorted out,
    These are all the Chemical Plants that were given licences to build on Riverbanks since the 70ts 80ts and up until the Present
    Day,
    Also the thousands of Tonnes of Fertilizer that is being spread by Farmers in close proximity to these once thriving Rivers,
    Surely the Disparity in the number of Rivers Polluted since 1980 should have raised a red flag,
    So when you buy your licence for a day a week or for your Fishing Trip spare a thought for all the young people from the West
    coast who had to Emigrate,
    Who lost their Tradition and Heritage and who were hunted of the Sea that gave Generations Before Them a small seasonal
    income which is no more,
    The Way it is going without any measures being taken against Pollution it would not surprise me if Farmed Salmon are released into the Few Rivers that is left so that you may be fooled into thinking you caught the Real One,
    Truth not Fiction ,
    From an old Sea Dog,

      YES MIKE , I TOTALLY AGREE . POLLUTION ,EFFLUENT, SLURRY ETC HAS THE WATERS DESTROYED .SOME DROP IN 36 YRS ,520 TO 20 .THAT SAYS IT ALL .WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT DOING ABOUT IT . THE USUAL S,F ALL. A DISGRACE .ARE WATERS TESTED AND CULPRITS HEAVILY FINED . ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE .

      @mikekavanagh8952 3 роки тому +1

      @@michaelburke7070 Well sure when a Government wanted to stay in power they had to create jobs
      they gave licences to Chemical and pharmaceutical companies from all over the World and where were they all built but on riverbanks ,
      These people only cared about their own pockets and didn't care of the poison they would be releasing form their manufacturing,
      Then you had the Farmers the strongest lobby group in the Country and their vote was important
      so the quality of the river water was the least on the agenda, That is the facts so the Survey was expected and true to form, They all shout when its too late but the Backhanders to Ministers was
      to lucrative to turn down Multinationals have deep pockets and all these ministers had no one to
      answer to sure look at our track record , Tribunals , Inquiries , Millions of taxpayers money given to
      Barristers who laughing at the stupid system who they designed for themselves,

      I think prawn and shrimp should be allowed as long as all fish caught with this method are released. I believe in releasing all salmon no matter what method. As long as they are handled correctly and allowed to continue their journey and spawn.
