How to FIX a Toaster that doesn't stay down WITHOUT taking it apart

- Hi, this video shows you a very easy way to fix your toaster without taking it apart. If your toaster no longer stays down then it could be a very easy fix. Most of the time this is caused by a build up of crumbs affecting the latch release or interfering with the solenoid operation so by giving it a good clean by shaking the crumbs out it can very often fix this problem.

I was about to buy a new toaster when I have decided to watch this video on a whim. Let's just say I don't have to buy a new one anymore. We live in a very disposable world. It feels good to have taken a step to counter that. Even if small. Thanks for the tutorial!
Awesome. Toaster worked like new. Couldn't believe the amount of crumbs inside! And I clean the tray regularly. This easy fix saved me $60. Well explained - very easy. A toast to you!
It didn't work for me, at first. So I amped up the toaster abuse. I put a thick folded up kitchen towel on a cutting board and banged the hell out of it. I started off low impact, checked the toaster and did it again harder until it worked. It stopped working just after I shook out some crumbs so I figured there was a causal relationship there. Works great again! Thanks Vince.
P.S. I shook out enough to build a Crumb Castle. The answer to "Doesn't anyone clean out this toaster?" is self evident.
I shake the crumbs out regularly (and clean the tray) and that's what CAUSED my toaster lever to not stay down...
The same reason I’m here too.
Same here. Do not shake the toaster.
Mine too!

I was ready to do an afternoon toaster teardown. My wife had already cleaned the tray but it still would not stay down. Turned it upside down over the kitchen sink and shook it as hard as I could, now it works like new again. Great advice. I wonder how many toasters are in the landfill for lack of a good shake to bring them back to life. I feel $40 richer today THANKS!.
sometimes it was the exact opposite, I had experience that when shook too hard, the lever wouldn't stay down but then again if you were lucky, you shook it again, it might just stayed down again. It happened to my toaster. Still beat taking the whole thing apart AND putting it back together or getting a new one.
I don't know if it was the shakes or the actual cleaning that fixed it, but it's fixed now. Thank you!
You’re a genius!! I used to clean it out more regularly but hadn’t done in a while and it never occurred to me this could be the issue. This totally worked and I’ve just celebrated with a round of toast and tea ❤️ which I haven’t been able to have for a few days. I even was thinking to buy a new one but I love my toaster and it’s so good to be able to see it back working again. Thank you 🙏🏻
I cant thank you enough. The latch wouldnt stay down on my Magimix toaster. Was about to take the side off to see if could be fixed before putting it in the recycle bin. Then came across your video and viola, my toaster latch staying down again...❤
Thank your for this reminder to clean the crumbs thoroughly before thinking about repairing or replacing. I have been regularly cleaning the crumbs from my 9-year old Cuisinart CPT-70 toaster but once I unscrewed the bottom I was able to get more crumbs to come out and that solved the problem of the lever not staying down.
Thank you so much! My toaster is working fine again!
I didn't quite believe your method would work, and at first it didn't... until I gave the toaster a REALLY HARD SHAKE!
I guess some tiny crumb was strategically placed and finally was dislodged, because now it feels different when the lever goes down.
It's a great feeling to repair something!
Thanks! -- saved me buying a new toaster -- lasted 13 years without a shake, but that helped! :)
Hey, thanks SO MUCH for the help. Story: One or more of my naughty cats knocked my fairly new toaster onto the floor, after which the lever would not stay down. I was just perusing the online stores: man, are some toasters super expensive. On a whim, not really expecting any information, I searched for help and found your posting and thought: what do I have to lose. Well, the tray was empty, kind of puzzling because I hadn't cleaned it for awhile. Turned it over and shook, which dislodged a literal blizzard of crumbs and whatnot; then used my hairdryer to dislodge stuck pieces. Plugged the toaster in, and Yippee! it works Apparently, when my cats knocked it over, all the crud flew into the inside and blocked the little catch. As others stated, just think of all the discarded toasters that just needed a good shake. Thanks again!
You just made me a hero at the office
Tried to fix it by taking out the screws. Luckily one wouldn’t come out so UA-camd the problem. Followed the advice and guess what. Toaster works fine now. Thanks so much.
Well, I cleaned my WORKING toaster today. Pulled out the tray, turned it upside down and shook out the crumbs. Then I plugged it in and it DIDN'T work. So, off to UA-cam I went to find a solution. Taking it apart was not an option since the screws are from hell. Why make a three sided nail head for pete's sake? I then found this video and tried shaking it again. It actually worked laying on one side so that was a clue, I guess. So I shake REALLY HARD and out comes a hunk of toast about the size of a nickle. I plug it in and TA DA! It works! Thanks so much for this video! It saved me from buying another toaster. Who can live without toast, right?
Good advice. I had cleaned mine and was trying to find a video on how to take it apart when I saw yours. It worked straight away. I will put the screws back now
Worked for me. I used a stiff paint brush to clean on the inside and remove some seeds that were logged from my seeded bread. All is working again. YAY! $50 or more saved.
Initially very underwhelmed by this solution, felt a bit like 'obviously i emptied the tray...' But.. giving it a good shake actually did the trick! nice one
Found a Russell Hobbs toaster dumped in our communal bin store, looked pretty new TBH. Plugged it in, bread wouldn't stay down. Did and your instructions ....works perfectly! Anyone wanna buy a toaster?
This saved my toaster. So simple but so effective. Thank you 😊
It worked !!!!! Thanks for the easy to follow video. Never knew there was a tray in back .
Thanks so much for your advice Vince, you have made 2 Pensioners very happy, as we don't have to buy a new toaster 😄
Holy crap I didn’t think this would actually work, nice video, thanks!
Advice followed, emptied out all the crumbs (quite a lot) give it a good shake upside down, plug back in & it works a treat.
Haha - so I watched this and thought this is the worst, and on top of that I had cleaned my toaster out, literally a week ago. But, I thought, what do I have to lose? I emptied out the tray of crumbs. There were hardly any. Just as I thought. I plugged it in, and it worked. My apologies for doubting you.
oddly, my problem happened *after* I cleaned the unit. Going to have to try a can of compressed air or such to see if something is gumming up the works.
same here, I wonder did the compressed air work
I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but after I blew it out with compressed air it still didn't work. So I turned the heat setting all the way up and then it worked and now it works on all of the heat settings again. So try cranking the heat setting up if its not working after cleaning it, maybe the compressed air wasn't even necessary.
Same to me here. Lemme me try heating it at full heat
Had this exact problem. Toaster works again thanks to you. Cheers mate!
Worked for me! Thanks for the advice Vince!
thank you. I did it and it's working again.
Yep, mine needed a clean but after the clean it wouldn’t stay down, so cranked the heat up to the top, held it down , now it stays down , so it must have burned whatever was stopping it staying down! Yay
Worked like a charm! Thanks so much!!!
Had a look at mine, same symptom. Toaster given a vigorous shake but no joy. I then took a bright torch and looked inside. At the bottom of the slot is a little square electromagnet. On the moving toast rack a moveable steel plate. Mine were coated in food so I used a long thin allen key (toaster unplugged) to scrape away the food residue. All fixed, good as new.
Works great! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks!! My toaster actually got jammed up by not being thorough enough when I cleaned it. Probably caused crumbs to lodge in the mechanisms.
this is so much easier, and a smart troubleshooting step for anyone ready to take their toaster apart!
Thank you had clean the tray and turned it upside down twice but then the handle wouldn't stay down so I tried it again after watching your video and turned it upside down again it worked this time. Thank you so much u saved me from getting a new toaster. God Bless you have a nice day.💕⚘🌹
Sweet and simple, it works!
I have to try this with my toaster. I hope it works.
Thanks man....good vid!
Amazing! It worked for me! 👍🏻
Damn it didn't work for me 😞
Nice, no longer have to buy another. Thanks :D
Thank you!
Awesome it worked for me I was just looking to buy a new one thank you
Thanks. I had cleaned it out a few days previously. Did it again and it worked.
Thank you so much👍👍👍
It worked! Thank you!
Woow thank you soon much! It worked! 😍😍
Vince, I had a thought (it happens!). Would it make any sense to hold the toast levers in the down position to prevent any debris from dropping into the space between the contacts and causing a problem like I had? I had a surprisingly large piece of toasty-charcoal drop out of my toaster that I think was the problem. After it fell out the toaster was A-OK.
That's a good question. I would like to know as well. Maybe keeping that area connected would keep crumbs out of there. Good thinking, James!
any other tips? i have a fairly new Sunbeam toaster - i looked inside and it was mostly clean, but went ahead and tried to shake things out and also emptied out the trays. it's a 4 slice toaster and the left set won't go down. i think it's only gone down maybe 2 or 3 times. the one on the right has been working fine. and yes it's pretty new, less than a month old, but as i've used it - i don't think i can just return it either.
Worked like a charm. Thanks
Brilliant it worked for me. Thanks
Cleaning did not do the trick but when We took the top off we saw that the wires near the bottom magnet had moved up preventing the top magnet from reaching the bottom magnet. Probably due to dumping out the crumbs. Pushing the wires down a bit near the bottom magnet allows the two magnets to contact. Problem solved.
once you power up the toaster and put the lever down it makes two contact and electromagnet get energized and keeps the lever down. After defined time as set by user by rotating knob the electromagnet gets de energized and thus poping the bread and cutting power supply.its as simple. My toaster was not poping up so i simply opened it and sprayed sanitizer on rotating knob(variac). As time passes its becomes open circuit. You may replace the pot(variac) or fix resistance
This is exactly how I broke my toaster. I came to this vid because I thought "oh, my toaster needs a good clean." so I turned it upside down, shook it like a MF and realised I'd broken it by doing so.
My Dualit Lite toaster stopped staying down after I cleaned it. I can't find any case like mine reported anywhere but yours, and, of course, no fix for it.
Exactly the same thing happened to me 🤦🏽♀️
@Muffin: Ahh....."Shaken Toaster Syndrome". That explains it.
Worked for me
There is another situation: You clean it good as shown but it still jumps up too early. The answer is that the mating surfaces of the magnet and metal strip that meet to hold things down have dirt on them. In that case, loosen and lift the toaster's cover enough to get a finger inside from below and rub clean the two surfaces. The magnet is at the base of the frame that lets the lever slide up and down. It is t's a fairly easy job and I didn't take the toaster's cover off completely.
Your advice worked for me - Thanks
Thanks for the tip, it works😊
I'm glad I took your instruction it worked!!! Thank you
Thank you! That worked. 😀
Thank you,i got mine fixed now
That fixed my problem. Thank you!
12 thumbs up. Most Excellent fix DUDE!!
Your videos are funny lol
Just had the same problem with a Morphy Richards 'Verve' toaster - knocked out all the crumbs, and there were several very hard, consolidated lumps - and all working again.
Thanks it worked ☺️ saved £40
Works for me yayyy
I started to shake my phone as you were shaking the toaster. Lol. Hope it helped. 🤪
Thank you... Easy fix.
Worked with me. Took a lot of shaking and retesting. Seemed to be tons of crumbs in there.
Worked thanks
I clean tray & turn toaster upside down. Gently tap when upside down & shake a little, but mainly tap.
I thought our toaster wasn’t working until I realized it wasn’t plugged in lol 😣😂
hahaha. i wish that was my problem too >
I dont think my toaster has pull out trays...i usually turn it upside down over my sink and shake out the crumbs..i think thats probably what caused tge spring to not stay down..should i just give it a good shake and bang it a bit?thanks
My ancient Black and Decker toaster was starting to go funny so I opened up a brand new Rival toaster that I bought about 8 or 9 years ago for a spare. It would not latch and I was ready to toss it. As a last resort I plugged it in and held the thingamabob down with my finger. After it smoked and smelled a lot it stayed latched. BTW, the slots on this Rival are not big enough to accept a slice of bread.
Is there any video on UA-cam at all for Toaster's that won't go back up? Everything I see is for toasters that won't go back down.
glad I saw this before taking it apart like the other video!
worked thank you !!
My toaster started doing this, went and bought a new toaster and on the first attempt to use it, it also had the exact same issue. I obviouslu did something really messed up to a toaster in a previous life. 😫
Solved my problem ty
Thank you I have toast for breakfast 😀
did the job very well....
LOL. Cleaning mine that exact way is what caused it to stop working.
Thank you very much, wonderful it really works
Thanks this fixed my toaster 😂
A toast to you!
No pan intended 👍
(Pan is bread in Spanish)
Brilliant!!!!
We have the BTA720XL with the same problem. Cleaning per the video worked for only one cycle; then it needed to be unplugged to reset and turn off the "Cancel" button which was stuck in the on position.
HERE IS THE FIX: With the unit unplugged, press and hold the Cancel button while you plug the unit back into the socket. Now it works like new.
thank you, this worked on my Sunbeam!
Thank you 😁😊
Thank you
Can’t believe it bud,,, it bloody works.hahahahahaa
Fantastic, thank you so much 😁
@My Mate VINCE my mum bought a new Breville toaster last week and on the second use it worked perfectly fine but i went to reheat my toast it pressed the lever down and within 5 seconds is self cancelled and i went to press it down again it wouldn't turn back on and lock into place, same with the second lever
Same here with my Breville. Failed after two years. Shaking crumbs out didn't work. Regularly clean the trays and blow away crumbs from inside. Mine is just dead. Removed top cover and sliders are operating fine. Brass contacts are connecting at bottom when slider is pressed down, but no reaction from elements. I suspect a component on the printed circuit board has failed. Plug and cable both tested ok. A little more than a shake required here I'm afraid.
Thanky mate✅✅
I didn't know there was a thin tray to remove, so I removed it, cleaned it, shook all the crumbs out, let's see if it works in the morning
Thanks! It works for me too! :-)
I clean my Smeg toaster out once a week, its only 12 months old and hardly used and this started happened. Hardly any crumbs came out when I followed this, still not working.
Okay I went back and again shakes and swats. It works now
Suggestion for everyone..... use automotive chrome cleaner to polish the chrome pieces on top of the toaster. Looks like new afterwards !
Uhmm I have a problem. I turned it upside down and was shaking it and a spring came out! What did I do? Is it fixable?
Am I the only person that's bugged by the top of your bread not being toasted 🤭 have you tried putting the bread on it's side instead?
On another note, I will try you toaster cleaning tip tomorrow; fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞
