Toaster Lever Won't Stay Down - Easy Fix If It Has Power - Breville Vtt233 4-Slice Toaster

  • If your toaster lever won't stay down but has power, it could very easily fixed by giving it a good clean. If that doesn't fix your toaster not staying down, then you need to open it up to investigate. There is a simple lock in mechanism in most toasters, and any of the parts can be broken with time. In this case (Breville Vtt233 4-slice toaster) I wasn't able to find a broken toaster part, so the only explanation was that dirt or bread crumbs became stuck in the locking mechanism, preventing the toaster lever from staying down. I clean the toaster thoroughly with a toothbrush, and the toaster was fixed. This method should work for most toaster makes and model. Be careful when dealing with electrical appliances, otherwise consult a professional if unsure.

Your fix worked even when the tab on my toaster would not come off the lever. After I lifted the cover, 2 big crumbs fell out, and I could clean the parts with the cover pulled up as far as possible. Thanks for your thorough directions that deliver!

Dude that totally worked!!! Thank you - it was food debris making the lever not stick down & I only had to go as for as taking all the screws out to clean the magnet-- - give this a try before your throw a toaster in the landfill -

Thanks for your video. I have a Grundig toaster, where the lever would not stay down. Watching your video gave me the confidence to take it apart. give everything a good cleaning with a dry toothbrush, and then blow some compressed air into it from every which angle. And when I put it all back together, it worked.

This fix totally worked - I was glad you said to be prepared for different types of screws - My model had three different screw heads and six metal fasteners that needed to be repositioned - At and rate, the toaster stays down and will hopefully give us another 6 years of uninterrupted use - I am so happy I looked at your video before tossing it out

I have a Hamilton Beach Toaster and the plastic lever can't be removed. After disassembling as much as I could (the design makes it practically impossible to fully take apart), I found out that the lever on this toaster catches with a magnet, not a mechanical piece. So I made sure to wipe clean the magnet attached to the electrical board, and the other magnet that moves with the lever. It didn't seem to work when I plugged it in to test, but I read that some toasters need to be fully reassembled for the magnet to activate due to sensors (I don't know what kind of extravagant toaster has sensors but I didn't really have any other options lol). I put the toaster back together and after trying a few times (and holding the lever all the way down briefly before letting go), it started catching! Not sure how necessary the reassembling was, but mine is working now. Thanks for the video, and I hope this comment helps others.

Thanks for saving my 50 bucks and helping me understand a little bit about my toaster! It was also a case of bread crumbs. In my case, looks like the honey oats multigrain bread was the main culprit here.

There is a magnet which is activated by the V shaped object when you press down. This magnet holds the mechanism until the timer tells it to cut the circuit … so it’s not always crumbs that cause the problem.

In my case it turned out that the plastic cover for the plug when it ships to you was shoved in to the toaster who knows when, and one side wouldnt stay down. It had been this way for a long time so we used it as a 2 slice toaster, not a 4. Security torx screws in my case so was a total pig to open. Bashed it many times on its base while I had it outside. Shocking how big "crumbs" can be. No way would they fit out on the crumb tray. Surprised it didnt catch fire before now! Enjoyed our toast, cooked 4 at a time and yes we toasted you! Thank you!

Wow, it works. The pushing the lever to a side specifically. The toaster lever wouldn’t stay down so I did the thing where you push it to the right side and it works again! I guess it’s because the thing the lever catches on or whatever was slightly off so getting the lever to the side caught it and put it back in place.

I clean my toaster and I could not believe how much crumbs came out and chunks of bread. It was a lot!!!! Then I tried the lever and it did not work. I opened it up like it showed in the video and I brushed around with a toothbrush. I put the screws back in and plugged the toaster in and it still didn’t work. I was disgusted because it worked when it was full of crap. I waited like five minutes and tried it again and it works like a charm. I have no idea what I did but wait. So if you have tried everything in this video just keep toaster plugged in for like 5 minutes and try again. I don’t know it toaster reset themselves or something but it works fine. Btw it’s a Cooks double toaster. One side has never worked but we will use it until it finally dies 😅 thank you poster, this was helpful.

Good video - It didn't solve my problem, but it gave me a good understanding of what my problem is: the electromagnet isn't getting power because of a broken connection (the connections on the circuit board are sometimes very fragile), and, unfortunately, it's too small for me to do anything about. Frustrating that such a small defect stops the whole machine from working.

once you power up the toaster and put the lever down it makes two contact and electromagnet get energized and keeps the lever down. After defined time as set by user by rotating knob the electromagnet gets de energized and thus poping the bread and cutting power supply.its as simple. My toaster was not poping up so i simply opened it and sprayed sanitizer on rotating knob(variac). As time passes its becomes open circuit. You may replace the pot(variac) or fix resistance. In this video lever is only making one contact.open it and clean the contacts.it will work.you can use sanitizer spray on contacts as well.If it solved your issue give me a thums up.
