This is honestly the scariest episode so far to me because David is 100x scarier than any infected could ever be. Because the infected aren’t actually real but David’s exist all over the globe in every corner of the world people like David exist. David is very real threat probably the realest Ellie has faced so far.

Did you listen to the Creator Podcast for this Episode? An intersting take was that they made a point of comparing the two different communities in the show. One was founded by a lawyer on the principle of laws and shared decision.
The other one is a bunch of people deciding to follow one leader and having him make all the decisions with his small circle.
One is a democracy, the other a theocracy. And they pointed out that allthroughout history and around the world, Theocracies turn into comparable shitshows like this group.
Their bottom line being: Religion is very bad as a basis to form a government on.

@@Quotenwagnerianer And they managed to make that point without it coming across as "religion bad", which could very easily have happened. Also, they didn't do the "all priests/preachers are pedos" thing either, because David mentions he used to be a teacher, heavily implying that he used his position to abuse his students, and only became a preacher after the apocalypse

(Disclaimer: Just so you know my perspective, I haven't played the game.) As relieved as I was that Ellie had gained the upper hand and killed David, I was also absolutely devastated for her in that moment. Any innocence she still had was destroyed by what David did and attempted to do to her and by the fact that he forced her to hack him to death to avoid it. Ellie just lost a part of herself and will be forever changed and traumatised by these events. That guy was a monster.
Joel, on the other hand, is an absolute weapon. The way he arose from his death bed and took out the men left behind to search for him, despite being wounded and nowhere near fully fit, was quite simply epic. As for that interrogation scene.... well, let's just say he wasn't messing around. I totally expected that Joel would burst in at the last minute to save Ellie, but I'm so glad they actually had Ellie save herself. She went beast mode. She's a true survivor. She is Joel's daughter.
Can't fault this episode. Can't wait for the finale.
P.S. If someone feels the need to tell you how good they are it's probably because they've shown you otherwise and as the old saying goes, "judge people by what they do, not what they say."

    • @TukaihaHithlec
      @TukaihaHithlec Рік тому +13

That’s good, because that’s what the game intends as well. You expect Joel to save her, but he only makes it in time to pull her away from David’s corpse. You’re glad she can protect herself, but wish she didn’t have to. I’ll say that not all of her innocence is gone, but she is clearly traumatized from this point forward in the game.
      Minor spoilers
It’s sad because at this point in the game you can see Joel fully opening up and being fatherly, but Ellie is now quiet and distant. It feels like Joel’s getting his humanity back only for Ellie to have lost her’s.

I don’t know if you played the game, but during the interrogation scene with Joel, one of the dudes refers to her as “David’s newest pet” so in the game at least they know what David does to young girls and just turn a blind eye. It’s totally possible that his men in the show knew too and wanted to spare Ellie in their own twisted way.

They’ve made a point of trying to narrow the gap between good and bad guys, making the good guys more questionable and the bad guys more sympathetic. It was just that look on James' face after David shot his rifle in the air to stop them, it got me thinking, it looked like he was thinking "I just wasn't fast enough", Again, I know they don't read that much into James in the game, and I know that it's alluded too in the game that David's people know what he gets upto, to some degree atleast, but I thought it was a cool addition to the story to see small suggestions that these men who know the type of monster they follow in order to survive might try to atleast keep the suffering to a minimum if they can help it. From the few members of David's group that we actually meet in the game, I always remember getting the feeling they were all on board with David's way of thinking 🤷

Most religions have some sort of warning about "false prophets" and this is exactly why. When people are scared and vulnerable and overwhelmed, they are desperate for a leader to come along and say "it's gonna be okay", and the more desperate you are, the less discerning they are about who steps up and says, "I'll lead" - are they volunteering because they want to help people, or to gain something themselves? That's true for religion, politics, dysfunctional families, toxic friendships, cults, - any group has that risk.
One of the things the show/game does well is highlight that the REAL threat in any post-apocalypse or other catastrophic situation is OTHER PEOPLE. Up until now we've seen folks kill each other In the game plenty of times, but it's at this moment where we're reminded of the laundry list of all of the OTHER horrible things that people can and likely would do if given the chance: grooming, trafficking, forced-naughties, playing "donner party the home game", etc., and that also separates out "true evil" from the fungus, the fungus is just doing what biology does trying to survive, but David? David is actually evil, and actual evil is WAY MORE terrifying.
"It's okay baby girl" is another KEY moment in Joel and Ellie's story - Joel hasn't said "baby girl" since Sarah died and in saying that to Ellie, that's his way of saying "you're my daughter now for all intents and purposes". And Bella's face in that scene is perfect, you can see the accumulating PTSD building up on her face in real time. There are many different types of PTSD from a variety of sources - obviously when horrible things happen TO YOU, especially if they are done by sick malicious people, that's an express lane to PTSD, but another one that's not talked about as much is when YOU are forced into a situation where YOU do something that you never thought you'd be able to do, like hack an attacker to death, and then you have a hard time reconciling who you thought you were before that with who you are now. (That's the flavor of PTSD that gets a lot of war veterans), and the Ellie that walks out of the steakhouse is NOT the same Ellie that was carried in.
Next week is gonna be nuts
    Cheers

John: "The cutlets of Christ. Finally brings out the steak."
Those of us who've seen the episode: "My sweet summer child..."
I think the one thing that really struck me about David was that I've started wondering, after a lot of what he said about "my people need me" and all that, is he genuinely a religious convert? Like, even if he's looking at Cordyceps as a kind of god, does he actually believe in some kind of god? Or is he just using it as the strings with which to manipulate everyone around him? Like, he obviously knows scripture but is it because he's spent the 20+ years since the outbreak actually reading scripture and listening to whatever god he thinks of, or is it something that's been kinda honed and memorised through years of just using it to manipulate these people? it's kinda tough because he certainly has an air about him that we can easily identify as being similar to a lot of existing evangelicals, but he's also just so focused on the violence in his heart...either way I fucking loved the moment when Ellie just unloaded ALL her anger, ALL her fear, ALL her sadness on his face with that cleaver.
Now I'm torn between wanting the final episode now and wanting to put it off as long as possible because I don't want this journey to end yet.

As a Christian I'd say there's a lot of evidence to suggests he has no real interest in actual Christianity beyond cliches and manipulation. He sees himself as 'beyond' all that and is more interested in the cordyceps, hence his speech to Ellie about her being his (intellectual) equal.

I love your coverage of this show. It is great to see you two without the baggage of the video game to react and appreciate the show without constantly comparing the show to game. I have played both games but I enjoy the show as it's own thing. You two are great together so I hope to see more reaction videos from you both.

Could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that penicillin is supposed to be injected in large muscles. So, thigh or upper buttocks is probably best. Still, back of the arm would probably do, too. Given that she doesn't have medical training, I'd say she's just doing her best and putting the medicine where she thinks it's needed most.
Edit: Legit, this is one of those episodes where...like, I know the scene at the end is acting. I know the scene with Ellie and David in the burning steakhouse is acting. But the way she reacts is SO DAMN VISCERAL AND REAL that the scene honestly makes me a little sick to watch.

Just give Bella Ramsey the Emmy already! I was wondering how dark they were gonna make the *DARKEST* part of the game. And yeah, they did not hold back. They made David in his last minutes even more disturbing than the game made him. And when David tells Ellie that she has a violent heart he had NOOOO idea. I would honestly put her near the top of the list of the deadliest people in tv or video games. When she is chopping the hell out of David it is cathartic at first but then you see the tragedy because Ellie needed to tap into all of the darkness and violence in her heart to survive. And then we get the scene of Joel hugging Ellie and calling her baby girl😭😭😭.
I kinda wished that Troy Baker (the original actor who played Joel in the game) was cast as someone far more important than James. Still he was amazing and he had an awesome death scene, and it was darkly funny that video game Joel was killed by tv Ellie. Also wish that they gave Ellie her trademark bow and arrow, but hopefully we get that in Part 2.

David is the scariest part of the first game. You have to hide from him in the restaurant while he stalks you with a machete and a gun. All you have is Ellie’s switchblade. You have to sneak up and attack him from behind multiple times. Each time you attack him you have to run and hide again. Oh, and there’s broken plates all over the floor that alert him of your location whenever you step on them, and there are times you can’t avoid it. I thought I was going to poop in my pants.

David’s description of Ellie is correct because she is and can be a very violent person as she later rightfully demonstrates to David’s face.
The 2 sole words to describe Ellie are Profane and Violent which after this episode is something she’s going to need to come to terms with because what she did to David and what David wanted to do will be with her for a long time

I liked the description for David from Elise from Life Almost Without Reactions, saying that David is like an onion of evil, with every layer just being worse than the one before. But no, he would not be around if he were infected by Ellie, because they're infected, not zombies. If the host is dead then the infected is dead too, even if the fungi inside is still alive and feasting.
