- History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 13: Total Devastation achieved legendary status in the early 90s with their hit, "Many Clouds of Smoke." The duo of Bernie Yo POTna Red Eye and Big Tone Smoke, along with DJ Tuff Cut Tim, came up in San Francisco's Mission District. As the some of the first Latin rappers in the Bay, they blazed trails independently with their first release "In The SF Streets." This led to a deal with PGA Records and drop a hit song that would change their lives. On this episode of the History of the Bay Podcast, Total Devastation recalls their early days navigating the gang life and being early pioneers for the cannabis movement decades before it would become mainstream. Along the way, Total Devastation made waves in hip-hop, rocking shows with Lighter Shade of Brown and working with producers like Diamond D, Funkmaster Flex and Peanut Butter Wolf. As they navigated industry politics, burnout from the business side pushed music to the back burner. After a hiatus, Total Devastation is now gearing up to release new music, entering into the legal cannabis business, and planning on making a documentary about the group.

Such an important piece to Bay Area hip hop, so glad TD getting that respect and recognition they deserve. Legends🔥🔥
In 1992, Total Devastation's 'Many Clouds' and Ray Luv's 'Get My Money On' were the only artists in the Bay being played on KMEL.

When your album was first released for promotional use and air play. I worked for a coyntry station in fort worth texas. I was at TCU in radio tv production classes where we had to dj. And set up the equipent before each set. Id been doing that my entire life. We had minimal music selections to choose from. I made some calls and startef receiving cases of cds every week with all the new music from every genre. Most were mixed genres on 8 to 10 discs. Only the group and title info was provided. Yours was different. One of discs with mixed genre tunes had a song called Da Horney Man. As soon as i saw that title i headed to the station and shut myself in a recording studio. As soon as i heard that nasty bass beat i maxed out the levels in the board. After looking through the discs i got that time i found yours in the cartoon sleeve. I rarely got a groups complete album. I read all the titles and thought these talented poor bastards are gonna have a tough time getting any air play. Itll be word of mouth if they make it. I thought id better give them all the help i can. I got it to several stations where i knew people that had the balls to play your tunes. I worked at one if the biggest party clubs in the DFW area. We all had a gimmick. Mine became Da Horney Man. Every night when id get to work. The dj would blast it out as i walked in. Late in the night if the crowd started winding down id go get on my bike drive right thru the line of people trying to get in. Drive thru the club and grab a beer tub girl. Throw her on the back and drive thru the crowd onto the dance floor and raise hell trying not to run over too many people. Our club was good for 600 people max. Wed get shut down by the firemarshal and count 2500 people in there. Everybody would go batshit crazy when theyd hear that bass line start. They knew i was about to kick shit off. Im still playing your tunes decades later. I have a question for you why cant i find sny of your live shows online? Ive never seen yall live. The only experience i have with you is on cds. I figure dudes laying out lyrics like yours with unique beats has got to have the personalities to throw a good show. Id like to see that before im dead.
dude that mr frisco hoody though! shit is ill as fuck!
I've been listening to total devastation since i've been puffin medication. Somebody how long the way introduced me to your album and you all need to come to the beast coast in virginia to let this governor know he must need to legalize it...... In quick criticizing it.

My Apologies, we forgot about the funky aztec was from the Bay Area as well. Props from Total Devastation
And there was a group or individual that I remember from 1991 that at least had a demo tape on kpoo called the organization
In 6th grade I heard Many Clouds of Smoke and immediately went and found some one to smoke me out. 30 years later thats still the slap and Im still smoking tough.
This interview was dope AF!
