    Can confirm, asking dealerships if they have any "special" bikes in the back for a deal is always a good chance. When I worked at a dealership, I got a Virago 1000 for a whopping $1 because some guy bought a motorcycle and couldn't bring it back with him, and it was too old to sell on the showroom floor.

      @@FITNESSOVER45 Yep, I bought 2006 Shadow like that, it was sitting at the side in the storage shed and they salesman never moved it so I asked the owner one day what the deal was and he said the guy dropped it off 5 years to have some work done on it and never came to pick it up, I paid $300 for it, I didn't want it but I knew someone that was looking for one. I loaded it up in my truck and went directly to the guys house and sold it to him for $600, They were happy because they got rid of it, He was happy because he got the bike he wanted and I was happy because I doubled my money for nothing more than loading it and delivering it.

    I love this video. Sean, your bike is nearly identical to what my dad owned. It's the one that I learned to ride on. I had just had a long term relationship fall apart, and my dad, in a rare moment, walked up to me, handed me the keys, and told me to go get out in the wind, get at one with the Spirit and let the pain ease. We didn't have very many times like that, but that one is etched in my heart forever. My mom wasn't real happy about me going out on it at all, like not a bit. Dad told her that I needed it right now, funny, that was all it took for her to just ask me to be safe and walk back in the house. I burned half a tank of gas, but getting to a nice park, watching the setting sun, praying, thinking, what a memory. I really enjoy your videos brother, keep them coming.

    I can relate to the challenge of taking out and rebuilding/cleaning the carburetor. About two years ago I purchased a partially running 1993 Yamaha Virago 750, which looked quite similar to Sean’s. It broke down on my drive home with it. Turned out that the carb needed a makeover. It was a big challenge removing the carb, but especially trying to reinstall it. UA-cam was a huge help. Still riding the bike. Thanks for the fun videos Sean and Craig.

    It's the same here in the UK, recently bought my first bike after weeks of looking. So many deathtraps out there that people want stupid money for. Always have adverts that go something like, "Easy fix just don't have the time, brakes not working" or "was running when parked, don't know whats wrong but been told it's a quick fix" finally found a good one, running, recent MOT (Yearly safety inspection) passed with no issues and not stupidly priced. Paid the guy full asking price for it because why would I low ball what seemed to be the only honest seller in the UK biking world?

    Great job Sean. Here's a tip that works well for me: when taking something apart, snap a photo of it first on your phone. When you get down to the next layer snap another photo. Anything that might be tricky to get back together, snap another photo. Then just look back at your phone to put things back together. Ha ha, that was a fun episode.

    OMG!
    Im 54 and my first street bike at 16 years old was an 82, 400 Yamaha Heritage Special!
    I'm stoked to see that they are still around.
    Mine was totaled when an off duty cop ran a red light on a 4 lane street, jumped the lane and wrecked me, my passenger and worst, my bike.
    It was small and handled well but my fenders were black not, chrome being it was an 82. One of my favorite options on that bike was the kick start. I felt so Fonzie kicking that thing over and hearing it jump to life.
    Sniff. I miss it.
    My mint 98, 1100 Shadow Tourer makes me feel a little bit better, though.
    Life is full of heartbreak but at least my passenger and I lived to ride again.
    Kick start on a bike you could bump start as easy as a 50cc puddle jumper. It was so fun!

    That's a crazy high price for that 400 Special. I bought a 1980 version of that bike back in 1982 from a dealer and paid $1800 for it up in Canada. Funny enough, out of all of the bikes I've ridden, it was my favorite.

    Since you decided to ride the Virago around with only one cylinder firing, you are lucky that the problem was lack of fuel rather than spark. If that rear cylinder had been getting gas but no spark, it is possible that the raw gas would have washed away enough oil on the cylinder that the top ring would have scored the cylinder wall. The raw gas would also have diluted the motor oil. There are numerous stories of people who cranked and cranked an engine that would not start, only to later discover that they ruined it by scratching up the cylinder walls.
    FWIW, for an engine that has not run for a long time, I have been told to spray some Marvel Mystery Oil or fogging oil around the piston through the sparkplug hole to lube the cylinder wall and get oil to the top piston ring. Years ago I know that Briggs and Stratton sold an aerosol oil to do this for mower engines that had been stored over winter. I don't know it they still do.
    ps. The engine will smoke like crazy for a few minutes when started until the oil is burned off.

    My 82 Virago 750 had a fuel petcock for each carb. So you had to remember to put BOTH of them on reserve if you were low on gas. The other option was to put the rearmost one on reserve all the time so the one that sat higher in the tank would starve only the front cylinder and that one you could reach with your left hand.
    So I know exactly what it feels like when your 750 twin starts running like a 375 single... with one cylinder doing nothing but being dead weight.

    • @lanceweyel879
      @lanceweyel879 Рік тому

    • @MrShadowpanther3
      @MrShadowpanther3 Рік тому +2

      @@lanceweyel879 Well that other cylinder is still creating a bunch of friction, pulling air in (no fuel) so you get the additional power loss of having to compress that without the benefit of the expansion upon ignition. So basically worse than dead weight.
