  • Question: "I missed a whole bunch of fasts over the last decade or more due to illness, menstruation, and pregnancy. Do I have to make up these fasts? It seems too difficult a task for me to accomplish." Dr. Shabir Ally explains that this question isn't answered in the Quran. He advises that if you've missed some fasts from last Ramadan, you should try to complete them before the next Ramadan begins. If you aren't able to do so, then provide one meal for one person for each day missed. And if you don't have the financial ability, then that too is waived. Watch the video to understand his reasoning!

who makes things easy like that?
It's Shabir not Allah. He Shabir makes things easy by changing the rules. There's no quote from scholars that you can feed the poor in exchange for the days you've missed. So he's alone in his fatwa.
You're still obliged to fast for your missing, eventhough it has been years. This is the very least scholars have said. Allah makes things easy for you by His own criteria.
Don't ever seriously take this man's fatwa. He doesn't hesitate to change the rules as long as it is in accordance with the community.

@@ihsannuruliman4005 he said to make up the fast within the year, before the next Ramadan starts. Obviously you shouldn’t miss out your fasts with the thought to just pay a fidya... that’s more or less if you missed out on the fast to make it up within the cycle of a lunar year. I agree to be on the safe side to fast... but some have accumulated a lot of days by illness, pregnancies, nursing etc.... as he said, it shouldn’t be a burden and paying wouldn’t be an opinion for everyone anyways as you need to have the means.
There are many Fatwas by many different scholars, simply because this specific case wasn’t discussed what happens if you didn’t make up the fast within the lunar year... wa Allahu a3lam
With all due respect, there are many other scholars who may make Fatwas which would be more in accordance with your views. He probably has more knowledge then the most of us...

@@faizalkarim601 You cannot fully understand unless you study Islam from the very beginning. Understanding the principles of jurisprudence in Islam, and the jurisprudence itself. Especially the one who called qiyas.
Allah says, "If someone is sick or travelling, then he should fast another days." This tells us that even if someone has an excuse, sick or traveling, he's still obliged to fast in exchange the days he missed. If that's the case, then someone who's okay, doesn't has any problem to not fast, but he doesn't fast, has more obligatory to qadha. Here Allah doesn't mention it can only be done before the next Ramadan. So the rule is general here.

Assalamu alaikum wa rehmatullahi wa baraqatuhu Dr. Shabir. I really admire the work that you do and the questions that you’ve answered in the past have been really helpful.
But in this particular question, when it comes to people who can’t give charity, for them what would be the motivation for fasting in the month of Ramadan, apart from the rewards that can be gained, but also considering that there will be no loss by not doing it since it will be ultimately waived off by the next Ramadan?
If you could shed light on this, it would be great. Jazakallahukhair.
P.S.: This is not a rhetorical question. :)

I have a similar problem. I have diagnosed with diabetes in 2007, since then I did not fast at all, but I paid the cost of two meals in each of the 30 days to a poor man. This year I tried to fast, and by the grace of Allah, I continue without having any major health problems. Should I do any compensation fasting? Or anything else?

What about someone sick then there come good health later ? They have to give fidya or continue the fast during they was sick in the ramadan. I heard that who was sick during the ramadan they can give fidya. But after ramadan if they come good health then they must fast. Not accept the fidya. It's true?

What do you mean the Quran didn't mention this? it's in the same verse that you mentioned Quran 2:185.
There are many translations but basically if you're sick or traveling you fast the days you missed at a different time.

From what I understood is, he says we are supposed to make up those days before the next Ramadan. In the case of accumulating too many days over the years he suggests to feed the poor for each missed day and then start fresh. Like once you fed the poor and you missed out on days the following Ramadan, you are required to make them up w Allahu a3lam

Its very cruel to require a woman who was pregnant and breastfeeding for several years, Some women even 10 years, to make up those days! If you had 5 kids 1 or 2 years apart you can't make up 300 days! That's almost a whole year. So I like this option way more.

@@theman8070 maybe in the winter thats fine but if you are fasting in the summer it doesn't really work. My friend who fasted while she was breastfeeding said her milk would dry up by the end of the day. And if you are exclusively breastfeeding then that means you are starving your growing child. Thats not ok...so if your milk dries up during fasting imagine what that would do to a growing fetus...and prolonged fasting leads to people eating a lower amount of calories...if you know anything about fetal development you'd know if you don't eat enough your placenta literal takes minerals, protein and fat (basically anything it needs) out of your body and gives it to the baby. Pregnancy brain is real because the placenta is actually taking the fat right out of your brain! Womens brains can shrink by up to 30%! And if you are are eating a poor diet it and have had more than 1 child it can be even worse. Women need more nutritients, more protein, and more fat during pregnancy not less.

Simply just start with a clean line in my eyes. Feed others for a year and before the next Ramadan fast a week earlier. I do not think you need to torture yourself when you were unknown with what to do at that time when you were menstruating or pregnant, everyone is still learning. To feel better you have given the world more kids with the Islamic religion, so that is a good deed. Forgive yourself and improve your knowledge about Islam.

Very interesting. There cardinal and venial sins. Orthodox Christians have the opportunity to make confessions, at least once year; and the priest will give absolutions and pence and spiritual guidance. The penitent goes home with a peace of mind. Islam is different.

3.49 onwards .. i am curious how in the world that is contrary to peace of mind. One is taking responsibility and the end vs putting it on someone else. No intermediaries.
