    Longdraw is how i first managed to learn to spin! I tried short forward draw but kept running into issues, but as soon as I tried spinning from the fold it clicked! Now i can spin any way I need, but Im very surprised at how longdraw is such a scary concept to many spinners. I think that it can be very helpful to work /with the twist instead of against it, and i feel like short forward tends to make it feel like twist is a friendly nemesis that you need to stay ahead of - when twist is your biggest friend! Longdraw can really help understanding how twist and fibre work together

      Beautifully said!! Working with the twist is SO hard for so many. It really is like those trust exercises you do at summer camp, trust your friends to catch you.
      Thanks so much for sharing!! I love that you learned to spin by spinning longdraw!!

    Thanks so much for doing this sooner rather than later. Given the start of the 100 Days of Longdraw, it's super timely and appreciated!

    Hi, Sara! I'm Valeri. I'm new to spinning with a wheel, and have only very limited drop spindle experience. I thought there was a HUGE amount of excellent information in this video. Thank you so much for passing on your wisdom to us. I wished I could have seen a little bit more of your working hand in the frame at the beginning, but as soon as you changed camera angles, problem solved! I was able to understand the mechanics of the process because you explained it very well. It was great being close up enough to see how lovely your spin turned out, too. I appreciate you! Hugs

    Thank you for this video. I've started Andrea Mowry's 100 days of long draw spinning, and am a complete beginner. After watching your video I reduced my uptake and opened up my fiber cloud significantly and it's going quite a bit better. Love your podcast!

    So I have been struggling with long draw for about 2 months now. I have a Majacraft Rose (YAY) and I did what you said and BOOM, I am spinning longdraw. Also just got support spindles watched your videos multiple times and BOOM spinning support. You are so clear and concise and I just understand what you are saying. THank you again Sara for some awesome teaching.

    I hope to try this soon. You are an incredible teacher. I only shave the kiwi 1 spinning wheel so do you have any helpful hints to set it up? I'm definitely going to do the bobbin through office set up like you suggest.

    Thanks immensely Sara for this video. I greatly appreciate your time and help.
    So are you saying the Magacraft Rose can function in either a castle or a saxony style?
    I’m spinning homemade rolags with sari silk at about 20 to 24 wpi on a 6.5 pulley, the largest for my wheel. From what you’ve described, I think my problem might be regarding the tension in what you described at about 7:40 and at 17:12 from not drafting consistently and I need to thin out my rolags more.
    Should I get the same or similar results from spinning on double drive or scotch tension? It looks like you are spinning in scotch tension right?
    I’m going refer back to your video and try the different things you mention and see if I can find the right setting for tension and play with other woolen fiber preps and different drive band materials. Thanks so much for this video!❤

      The Rose, Aura, and Suzie can all swing their flyer uprights to the left and right fully. So technically, yes. The can mimic a saxony. But it’s is still a scotch tension wheel. Once my new wheel does come in, I will do a video on the differences between scotch tension and double drive!! However, double drive and scotch tension basically do the same things, tension the bobbin. Double drive is more subtle with the uptake where scotch tension can be more abrupt.
      Definitely keep fiddling with the tension and practice your drafting cadence. You’ll be a pro in no time!!

    Do you have any videos of spinning rolags or fauxlags? It would be really cool to see how you do that on a supported spindle and on a wheel. Also, as someone with access to a Kiwi 2, I’m curious if you ever got it well-set-up for long draw, and if so, any tips?

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  2 місяці тому

      I don’t currently but it’s a great idea! I’ll have to work on it. Also, my Kiwi was my first wheel and she went to another home about 9 years ago, so I don’t have access to one now. However I can think of some tips that really apply to any castle type wheel ☺️

    I'm still confused over woolen vs worsted prep n join. How does one know which to use?

      I can go over this in the next Ask Spinning Sara, sound good?

    Does longdraw translate to woolen spun????

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  3 місяці тому

      For the most part, yes. Woolen prep (carded fiber) and woolen drafting (longdraw) equals a woolen yarn. If you change either the prep or the drafting method, you get a semi-woolen or semi-worsted yarn.

    I was sure you were spinning comb top. I’m really not prepping my roving enough. No wonder I prefer combed top. I’m not giving the roving a real chance

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  3 місяці тому

      Nope. This roving is farm fresh. I love spinning combed top, but I do NOT longdraw with it! The only way I longdraw with combed top is if I am spinning from the fold or with fauxlags. True roving( not misnamed combed top) has lots of air and a much fuzzier appearance.
      Try spinning your combed top from the fold if you want a quick prep and want to spin longdraw.
      If you have a drum carder, try making a batt with fleece instead of top. The difference in longdraw ease will floor you!!
