I love that you kept your rolags light and fluffy. I have the hardest time with the tight rolled ones I see in other spinning videos. Shetland is one of my favorite fibers! Thanks for the video.
Cria and Kidd : I’m curious as to why Shetland is one of your favorite fibers? I’m spinning Shetland on my drop spindle and I cannot get it smooth. I’m drafting as best I can, yet I don’t have a consistent thickness.

Carol Harper I agree! Once you start making yarn with longdraw, the worsted draw seems so much slower. At least that’s what I have found. Thanks for watching!

Lovely relaxed demonstration of English long draw . I was a fairly experienced spinner when I taught my self Long Draw some 50 or more years ago.
I spent a whole afternoon watching a very experienced long draw spinner, at a country show.
It is very difficult for most people to change from short draw spinning, as everything is counter intuitive. but it is so easy and relaxing when you fall in and get the hang of it. Soft hands and well prepared rolags are the key. Trying it with tops or drum carded wool is not good enough, but I have re-carded both with out a problem and it gives a good starting point. It helps to have a wheel like yours with a slow foot action and a light but quick in feed.
Though slow, rhythmical and relaxing It produces yarn far faster than any other method.
Compared to American long draw which is really spinning from the end of the rolag, in a more or less continuous process that produces a semi worsted yarn. the English version is composed of several distinct stages.... The build up of a little spin. The draw out of a two inch or so bight of the rolag, with a controlled entry of the spin as the yarn is stretched and forms. A hold until the necessary spin has entered the yarn. And the rapid but controlled infeed of the yarn onto the bobbin. this produces a very soft and uniform woollen yarn.
It is the same technique that later came to be used on the spinning mule, which replicated its staged process.
It is good to see that people are still learning or teaching themselves to do it.
It is so good hearing from an experienced longdraw spinner. You gave a very succinct and clear explanation of the method. I often spin American longdraw with drum carded prep, so I see now that is really semi worsted rather than true woolen. True woolen spinning from rolags Is such a fast method and produces a very uniform yarn like you said with practice. I have very little patience for the short forward inch worm style. What a lovely interlude to my day, I could watch you for hours, you have such a love and reverence for fleece. I heard you say in another cast that you were a yarn sniffer, so 'am I, there is nothing like burying your face in fleece and having a good sniff. I used to love the smell of our woolshed when I was on the farm, most people found it overwhelming and couldn't tolerate it. You are so graceful when spinning English Long Draw.. Thank you. Jenny(NZ)

I just took up looming and bobbin lace I. 2015. Spinning has become my Patton this years. With the purchase of some drop spinals. I wish I had discovered spinning earlier. So wonderful you have had your spinning a long time. I think it was easier for me to learn long draw because I had not been spinning very long when I tried it so the worsted method was not ingrained in my muscle memory. I find it almost impossible to spin worsted on my wheel. So relaxing watching you spin. I am using an Ashford Joy right now and I love my “Daisy.” But someday.....would love to have a big old wheel like yours. The sound it makes is so wonderful.
The knocking sound is intermittent and really bothered me for a long time. Now I just accept it as a quirk of the wheel, so worth it as it’s perfect for fast long draw. Your Ashford will be the same!
I bought an Ashford Traveler wheel last year and have yet to try it out. But after watching you do it so easily I might just take her for a spin real soon!! I really enjoy your videos.

You are spectacular!!! Your videos are excellent and very engaging. You are a wealth of information. I just found you last night and then binge watched most of your videos all night long. I did not sleep!!! You are amazing and a joy to watch. You just popped up on my you tube feed and today after no sleep I am excited and inspired to spin. I am a spindle only gal so I would like to see park and draft methods for a Turkish spindle and supported ones as well. Park and draft is easier on my shoulders and I like to sit and spin. Have you heard of Spindolyns by Cady May? They are amazing spinning tools similar to a kick spindle but used in the hands. You would love them!!!!
I’m a newer spinner and haven’t tried long draw yet. But I have some super special local Shetland that I’m saving just for when I get good at that. I’d love to see a video where your whole body and the wheel show. I’m tall and often have a hard time finding the right position and posture to be comfortable long term. I have noticed now that I have my Lendrum DT that i have more endurance. It must be a better height and angle for me. I adore your channel and your gentle way. I’ve learned so much from you in the few videos I’ve watched!
I was just thinking about that as I was recording myself spinning for my last video. I usually focus on close ups of my hands. I will try to get a larger view next time. I am 5 feet 7 inches so not too tall. I do find my Lendrum DT to be very comfortable. Have fun with your Shetland wool!

Beautiful video. Woolen looks so relaxing, never figured it out. I've only ever made semi-woolen yarn. Rolags off a blending board and spun with the iron fist of worsted spinning. Don't trust myself enough to let the spin work back into a large chunk of fiber like that.
hi Hailey, I noticed my rolags off a blending board lack the loft of the hand carded variety. I need to work on my worsted spin! But woolen to me is so relaxing and fast. Take care and happy spinning!
