Tanya Donelly began making music with her step-sister as a teenager. Her step-sister happens to be Kristin Hersh, and their collaboration turned into Throwing Muses, which was the first American band signed to the 4AD label, 1986. She played on the band’s first four albums, and left in 1991 to commit more time to the Breeders, a band she had formed with Pixies bassist Kim Deal. Donelly reveals that the Breeders and her next band, Belly enjoyed a strange intersection before Belly’s “Star” debut in 1993.

You have your fiction all wrong. Star could not even come close to any of the top records of that era.

Belly/Star really blew me away with the way the vocals were layered, it def inspired me when recording my own material, not just vocally, but instrumentally as well. Belly/Tanya's use of multiple tracks to layer her vocals to create dense yet subtle, interwoven harmonies was truly inspiring. I still revisit Belly/Star often, with Dusted and Untogether being my current go to's.

Tanya Donelly is one of the best songwriters ever. Star and King are two of my all time favorite albums

Good interview, Tanya is awesome. Belly rules a big share of my favorites. There was so much great rock music at that time, many good bands were brushed aside. It’s now time to listen to “King” at high volume

I remember Newport and Providence being really hot for new wave, punk and industrial. Loved all these bands. They exploded on all the great college radio stations.

This was great. Been a fan of the Muses and Tanya since the early '90s. She's so eloquent and engaging here. I never knew King was recorded live! And Hersh's father ghost writing Dizzy and Not Too Soon?! Plus learning about the Breeders 2nd LP of Tanya songs that never was. Some delightful insights.

I think Kristin's "Murder Misery and Goodnight" is heavily inspired by her father.

This entire interview was absolutely delightful. Great interviewer. TD should become a voice actress (heck or regular actress!) or read audio books! Her voice has IMPROVED over time.
Would love to listen to her philosophize. One of the more interesting people I have never met excerpt through their music.
Peace out. Joy in Christ :)

Dude, you do not know the real Tanya Donelly. My family knew her family. She sucked the real talent, song material, and skills from OTHER people. Trust me bro.

This is a really good interview. But I think the interviewer missed two interesting questions.
One is about the classic "Tanya Dance" which is extremely cute (Tanya didn't like to be considered cute back then, but still) especially when she played Gepetto. Who came up with the idea? How was the reaction of other bandmates? Did she feel a little awkward (in a good, nostalgic way) when she watches the videos nowadays?
The other one is about Seal My Fate which is picked as one of the soundtracks of Rick and Morty. It appears in a very important scene actually. How did this happen. Did she know both the writers of Rick and Morty are huge fans of Belly (and Muses and Breeders).

Belly was different , it didn't try to be something and the song writing is amazing. Usually only metal music has good songwriting. I want to hear the king album with the guitarist on the left turned way up.

Dude, try reading the lyrics and listening to the music of Gino Vannelli. THAT is REAL, authentic songwriting. Tanya Donelly is not even in the same song quality universe as Vannelli. He is almost 70 and is still writing top-quality songs.
