I've always felt like the "Peter's too cool" thing is weird because when I was in HS the guys who reminded the most of Peter Parker were like Peter was in this movie. Kinda invisible, treated like assholes but weren't exactly pushovers even if they weren't really fighters. It's a modern Peter and I liked that.

Also Peter in general isn't like a "wallflower, doesn't know what being social means" like Tobey's spiderman. When he gets his power he gains like all the confidence in the world and everything, just look up all the relationships Peter has had and you'll see lol. Andrew's Peter is much more accurate and his Spiderman is played amazingly. (No pun intended)

Might be because that version was the one I grew up with and that I saw in theaters at they were coming out, but although I love all three and think Tom Holland is amazing (I am incapable of saying who "did it best" or rank them etc) and that his version was the most entertaining in terms of Peter being an actual baby high-schooler etc, Andrew's is tone one I'm most emotionally attached to! I think Andrew actually captured Spider-Man and Peter the best of the three. Peter is not supposed to be really reserved like Tobey was or look dorky. He started off dressing dorky in the comics but that ended pretty quickly. And he always had a chip on his shoulder and kind of an impatient layer that this version has. And the Gwen here is more in tune with the comics as she was with Peter first and is a very smart student. Tobey’s movies, villain, and the rest of his supporting cast were better though.

Half point, if you only reffer to the films :P. Spiderman's rogue gallery includes many animal based villains due to his obvious animal based powers (like Scorpion or Jackal).
But some other interesting characters come from animals you'd find in a city (The Black Cat), the organized crime (like Kingpin), serial killers (The Sin Eater), hitmen (Tombstone, Hammer Head, Silver Sable)... a wide variety of themes that underline what a modern city can offer (under that view, the films have missed the opportunity to pair the character with some interesting foes for sticking to animals :P).

Andrew just gave a better performance that was more grounded and real. Having Gwen instead of MJ was also a great choice, Gwen in the comics was brave and resourceful she was also as quick witted as Peter so she kept him on his toes just like in these two movies. The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was also really believable. Toby and Christen were like watching a pair of middle schoolers in a play trying to act like they were in love.

I always liked this movie. It was going for a darker, more grounded(well, as grounded as this can be) approach to the character. Garfield is by far the best actor out of the three Spider-Men, his chemistry with Gwen was great, and Rhys Ifans was an effective villain.
Its biggest flaw is that it's another origin story only a decade after Raimi's first film. Homecoming(which I didn't care for at all) wisely eschewed this and just already had Peter Parker established as Spider-Man(with a huge assist from Tony Stark).

  • @hdns4

All the relationships in this movie and ASM 2 feel so much more realistic to me than they do in the Raimi films. The chemistry and different dynamics Peter has with Uncle Ben, Aunt May, and Gwen are all really well written and really well performed.
Also, I really, really love how Peter doesn't catch the guy who killed Uncle Ben. His whole arc of how he actually becomes Spider-Man is really solid. Even when he gets the suit, he still isn't actually Spider-Man. At the end of the day, Gwen's dad is right during the dinner scene. He isn't going out there defending citizens from criminals, he's just out with a personal vendetta, and that's why it gets under Peter's skin when he says it, because it's true. It's only at the bridge scene where he realizes the kind of good he can do and actively makes the choice to give up searching for the shooter and commit to being Spider-Man for the good of others rather than for himself. As opposed to the Raimi film where his character is kind of passively relieved of having to make that choice as the guy just tumbles out of window on his own (until Spider-Man 3 at least but that's a whole other can of worms).

    • @Andyfierd

I don’t think you understand Raimi's films. The maturation process takes place from when Peter discovers he has the powers and decides to use them to make money until, through his fault, Uncle Ben is killed. Also, he is struck by the death of the thief, understanding what the consequences of his actions at 360 ° can be (from a great power ...). Same concept, but expressed better and in less time, to then focus on the evolution of history, which TASM does not do. Then the same concept is carried forward also in SpiderMan 2, in a deeper way that not everyone has understood

    • @hdns4
      @hdns4 2 роки тому +3

@@Andyfierd No, I think I understand it just fine thank you. What you just described is exactly the way I understood his arc too. And I still feel that giving Peter the agency of choosing to stop hunting his Uncle's killer (giving up his own desires for the betterment of others) and integrating that into the larger overall arc of learning responsibility is a more satisfying transformation than Peter simply watching the killer accidentally die on his own and being struck by it. If you disagree, that's fine, you're welcome to your opinion. But maybe learn to live with the fact that at the end of the day that's all it is, an opinion, and that not everyone will agree. That seems like a much better way to live your life than going around accusing people you disagree with as simply not "understanding." So for context this film came out at the same time as the first Avengers film. I remember hearing something about Sony and Marvel being in talks briefly about adding an easter egg to some of the wide shots of New York in this film to sneak in Stark Tower in the background but it fell through before the effects were completed and the movie was released. Even back then the idea of Sony and Marvel teaming up was being floated around years before the 2016 appearance of Tom Holland's Peter in Civil War.

I think Andrew Garfield brought the most to the role out of all the actors. I’m not saying the others were bad because they’re not but In the comics, especially his early years in the Stan Lee Lee/Steve Ditko comic run and Brian Michael Bendis in Ultimate Spider-Man, Peter is very moody, SUPER angsty, frustrated, and has a big chip on his shoulder. Andrew nails his characterization. He wasn’t afraid to stand up to the school bully and was kind of an A-hole at times. A jerk. He’s also got a smart mouth on him too. Tobey and Tom are way too timid and wholesome compared to how Peter was originally written in his early year (it still continued after that, just to a lesser degree.)

TBH I think the reason why Garfield's Peter Parker doesn't come across as "nerdy" as Tobey Maguire's is because that version of a nerd doesn't really exist in the same way anymore? I mean, it was 2014 it was hardly like photography was this extremely weird hobby. He was still extremely socially awkward, didn't seem to have ANY friends whatsoever before Gwen came along, and it's VERY spiderman of him to run into problems with bullies because he can't keep his mouth shut. He's genuinely just got this weird, excitable energy about him; like his brain is just moving too fast for most people to catch up, they really dedicate the time to make it clear how smart he is specifically about science and tech. He technically does still have all the hallmarks of a nerd, but because he just doesn't fit the stereotypes which are rooted far more in like the 60's when the comics started and the 80's with Revenge of the Nerds than anything that's actually true of today.
I mean, in the end Andrew Garfield is still hot as hell (and you know, playing a seventeen-year-old at thirty) so not many people are willing to buy the "weird, nerdy loner kid" thing but I really think he did a great job. I really enjoyed his more grounded performance and TBH the personality he showed made FAR more sense for someone who would actually decide to become Spiderman.

But comics Peter has a bit of a darker/angstier state of being in the comics. And I think Andrew actually captures that aspect of him quite well. Tobey’s natural energy gives Peter the shyness which makes sense, and is still accurate to Peter, but I think Andrew expands upon that more!

Gwen was actually Peter's first love interest in the comics, so that made a lot of people happy.
the scene with Lizard in prison at the end of the movie is actually sort of set up for something they wanted to do, which will be made clearer in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Yep, but so was Willem Dafoe; I think GG had a more electrifying presence due to his personality. Both (and most of Spider-Man's villains) are victims of circumstance, which makes them so compelling. His comic, and various animated renditions are far more interesting because there's a family dynamic: Dr. Conners simply wants to hug his son with two arms. Unfortunately there was a deleted scene that has Connors visiting a son, but was cut for some reason.

Honestly, his parents being spies was one of the few things from the comics that they hadn't bought over to the silver screen, so I understand the reasoning for them doing so, but it was not handled very well at all

ASM2 makes the circumstances behind his spider bite even more complicated, but eh. Also that made me realize that just about every one of Spider-Man's villains have that Jekyll and Hyde type split personality in some way, whether its GG, Doc Ock, Lizard, Venom/Carnage (though it makes sense for them since they're literally two people), Chameleon had it for a time, Scorpion, etc. Might be the whole dual life aspect blown out of proportion.

The reason why the original trilogy and TASM1 were memorable, was because of the producer LAURA ZISKIN
It was because of her and her husband (the screenwriter Alvin Sargent) that the movies had depth
She was the only one capable to tell AVI ARAD when to back off
Unfortunately, she died in 2011, during the production of TASM1
Without her, there was no one to stop Arad from destroying the franchise

I would like to say Nat as well, Spiderman has had many interpretations. "The Amazing Spiderman", "Ultimate Spiderman" and just plain "Spiderman" comics all exist. And with each comes a new version and interpretation of what Peter Parker and Spiderman are. All have the same general themes and back story, but each alters things in their own way to fit their artists and writers likes
"it's like different realities"..exactly, exactly right
