I get what you're saying, but even stronger Christians shouldn't watch these dark things because of demons that will come to you from it. I have experienced this. We myst is discernment, and no Christian should watch that freely, but discern it and ask God first. My friend did this ,and she believes God said to be careful. I personally couldn't get into it anyway. Also those games and shows won't be in the new creation, because they are dark and have magic. They are of the world completely. God has better things for us, which is why we must be ready to part with them when Jesus comes back.
Yeah, I had a strange impression from watching a show when I was kid, the tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, things got kinda weird at my house, so I quit watching it
I'm not a super legalistic Christian but I believe every Christian should stear clear of anything so demonic such as horror TV shows and films. Your eyes are literally the windows to your soul. I watched the first episode of this season and I truly regretted it. There is no other way to describe it but demonic. If you are saying to yourself yeah whatever I'm gonna watch it anyways (like I did at first because I'm an imperfect human) would you be okay watching it if Jesus came to your house, sat down on the couch beside you and said let's find a tv series we can watch together. I don't need to know your answer but just be honest with yourself
I can say without any reservation that, yes, I would have no problem watching this show with Jesus. I am not watching this show and APPROVING of the Demonic stuff. Demonic stuff is portrayed in the Scriptures all the time, and it's not like I'm a big fan of Molech or Baal. There really isn't a difference in watching your average Marvel movie - and if we watch EITHER of those things without thinking about it, we'll absorb lots of falsehoods and idiocy. But that's true of anything -- even the Bible. If we read the Bible and we have no idea what we're reading or where the symbols come from, or what the words mean, we will be hopelessly confused. Ive seen people go through a demonic possession and there was absolutely no difference in the show. Saying because it's in the bible is like saying sex is in the bible so I have no problem watching p*rn. The first episode had nothing in it that I could see as a good moral compass and it grieved my soul to watch it. I guess the real question is, how much evilness are you willing to subject yourself to, to find a little sliver of good in something. Ps. I stopped watching marvel for the very same reason. Some people think it's weird but I honestly barely watch TV anymore.

I certainly did not "enjoy" the parts of this show that portrayed something demonic. Those things are what set up the plot conflict for the heroes to overcome. You're certainly entitled to your own way of viewing things - and Paul himself says "let each one be fully convinced in his (her) own mind". It certainly shouldn't stop us from fellowshipping as believers.
Thank you so much for this video I just finished the season 4 and it was amazing (don't worry there is no spoilers in that comment 😉) to be honest with you, before watching this season I was really confused about what to do, because when i first watched the first 3 seasons, my life wasn't in the faith as it is right now, so in that time I consumed this show without even questioning how it might affect my fight but now it's different. So when this season released, I first tried to see objectively the good points and the bad points about this show, and i was confused because the show shows us really good values, but the general theme is pretty dark. At the end I decided to watch it because even if it's dark, this is not an horror movie, when i say that, I mean that horror movies are made to be dark, only dark and hopeless. I don't think they are specifically made to make us feel bad, but in a way that's the purpose, but stranger things is different, Joyce believed in a miracle with blinking lights and she persevered even when people were looking at her as a fool and at the end that's what save her son. that's what motivated me to watch But to also be honest I also let my emotions decide for me and that point wasn't good. I personally write a lot of stories, I have so many things that I wrote in my phone. Everyday a new idea is popping and a new scenario begins in my head, and every time I watch or I play something with a good storytelling i try to understand what i liked what can I apply from what I watched to my story to make a better character development, ect... and that's also what motivated me, but i know deep inside, that this is not a good thing. So after finishing the season, i came here to see if I can watch the last two episodes that will be available in July 1st (and also because sometime i felt ok but sometime this question was bothering me) And thanks to you a finally have my answer through my path with Jesus I became stronger in the faith, there is still some problematic areas but I know Jesus is helping me every day about that, but generally speaking my faith is much stronger that it ever was before, and I've never internalize anything that I saw, so about that point everything is ok, but i guess that i discovered that my judgement can be weak because of my emotions. And I also want to thank you about something, at the end of the video you mentioned rewatching stranger things, and playing D&D during eternity and when you said that it makes me so happy. As I said before I make stories, and one of my goals is to make peoples dream. What i mean by that is that i want to make stories that are so good that peoples will be passionate about it and some peoples will want to create stories to, I don't know if i will be able to make it in that life time but I already thought about doing that during eternity, but to be honest i thought that i will not be able to tell my stories, it's not that these stories are super violent or anything like that, it's just that they are like every stories, there are good guys fighting evil, some deaths, sadness and other things like that, and i thought that these stories will not be well received in a place full of peace, love and joy, it's not that this isn't a good thing, God knows how much I want that peace, but I told myself "who would be interested about fight, death and sadness, nobody would want to see and remember that anymore" But thanks to you, I think that there is possibly a way to tell my stories during eternity. Wow; thank you so much for sharing your heart. This is amazing! I agree totally with what you had to say - there's a difference between a horrific story where good eventually triumphs over evil, and a story where there's no point and it's just mindless death and destruction. But I would still say you can watch it (if it doesn't violate your conscience), I would just say it's bad storytelling. :P One thing that my wife and I do is watch shows and look for things that are "too incredible to be a coincidence." Joyce pursuing the lights and trusting that Will was still alive is such a perfect example of that. The way they unravel the mysteries in every season is miraculous, too. The way that the kids DISOBEYED HOPPER in Season 2 after they incapacitated Billy, so that they could go create a distraction so El and Hopper wouldn't be overrun by demodogs - they did the "wrong thing" in the moment, and it was the EXACT right thing that the side of "good" needed to win the day. I would like to say this - it is ABSOLUTELY a good thing to want to tell stories -- God himself loves good stories of triumph over evil. All reality takes the shape of one! I think that good storytelling, and even being motivated to tell good stories is absolutely the thumbprint of God in you. It just can't become THE GOAL of your life. :) But please, PLEASE continue to tell stories. It sounds as though this is something God specifically made you to do, and you should ABSOLUTELY pursue it. It changes everything when we recognize that eternity is a perfectly restored, flawless version of this existence. And while there is no PRESENCE of evil in that time, I fully believe that we will still be able to discuss and tell stories where it exists. We will often commemorate the "amazing things that God did" - well, what did God do, in every one of those amazing stories? In the Exodus, at Jesus's Resurrection, etc? He was conquering evil. I completely agree with you! I was able to find beauty in Max's story especially this season because I think a lot of us go through the same thing (minus the monster element) and it was really touching to see her overcome it.
AbsoLUTELY. I agree wholeheartedly. Good stories often involve a great deal of darkness. And that darkness often has parallels in our own lives, both "mundane" and supernatural. It was hard to miss the symbolism of running from despair, depression, and hopelessness, into the arms of people who love you.
I watched the first few seasons, but this last season was a whole other ballgame. I had to turn it off, because I’m so sensitive to such dark things and it was very dark to me. I’m not legalistic in any way and am open to most things that are even opposed to my views. But this did not set well with my soul.

I'm bought-in on the idea that Christians don't have to avoid graphic content, but what is your take on "should" Christians watch content that was created with the intention of bringing dark spirits into the world? For example, there are many horror movies wherein production, the creators call on spirits and want to manifest them through the screen. How does this play into Paul's teaching in Ephesians 6:12? Many Christians are concerned about evil spirits influencing them and want to "close the gate" to evil spirits. They're concerned that by consuming certain media, they're "allowing" or "giving permission" to evil spirits to enter their homes. This ties into 'Satanic Panic' in the 80s and 90s. Ouija boards, Marilyn Manson, D&D, The Exorcist, etc. Even though this is a UA-cam comment, I am honestly searching for truth here. - How do we be obedient to Christ first, and "be in the world" second?
I felt convicted on the last season especially. I loved the story but i didn't like all the J.C and G.D being thrown around. Our whole family started having nightmares around the time we started watching it. I'm praying whether it's from that or not but I think it is. I'm not scared of vecna or black widow spiders (used to have dreams of them when i was involved with witchcraft) and I was having dreams about both!! Plus theres a huge correlation about vecna being thrown to the upside down and lucifer falling like lighting to the earth and his battle with a "savior " and contempt for humans. He is elevated to an equal and "papa" is portrayed as a creator and manipulator. just interesting. I would recommend christians not watch and I'm gonna be praying over us and breaking that crap off our families. Disappointed a good story took it too far a few times and I don't like the direction it's heading.
I am a person that has watched a lot of horror movies before ebeung saved, and I'm not really bothered by stranger things. I don't get nightmares at all and even if I do which is really rare I pray it away. I don't think it's OK to generally say ever Christian shouldn't do this, becuase all of our convictions are different. Some people may not be able to take the amount of gore or scary elements in a movie , but I don't rlly care about it as much. At the end of the day it all boils down to, is me watching this going to make my relationship with God worse ? If the answer is yes then don't watch it.
This is a very interesting video that touches on some semi-relevant points in regards to a weaker brother or sister but i think it misses the much bigger picture. We often view these matters as it relates to us on a personal level but we need to understand that there is indeed a spiritual war and we are in it whether we like it or not. The enemy is called "the father of lies" and there is a clear strategy to de-senitise and confuse Christians and non-christians alike about truth. Truth is critical to the Kingdom and salvation. The greatest trick of the devil is to make people think he doesn't exist or to change people's perception of him so, in that equation God then becomes irrelevant. You see @the Overlap life with Tim Barber, this isn't just about how you and other Christians experience your entertainment. Its about the subtle and overt impact on the those without truth. I love ST (its entertaining and addictive). I could not wait for season 4 even though my spirit was being nudged before that. I watched the first 8 episodes and badly wanted to continue, but just could not. The Anti God (anti truth) agenda was just too strong and I could not support it. I do not fear entertainment...it has its place. But I cannot support anything that is clearly designed against the Kingdom (even if its wrapped up in entertainment). There are many believers who are either dying or waking up to the anti-christ agenda. Culture, system and mindset designed for deception. It is not a coincidence that those who have been enjoying ST are becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Could that be discernment? Could it be the Holy Spirit! As Paul contemplates in 1 Corinthians 6 "all things are permissible for me (In other words I don't view it as sin) but not everthing is beneficial" (in other words its not health to my faith or the faith of others). Not to mention the numerous scriptures that advises us on the healthy things we ought to meditate on, guarding our hearts and minds, the war we are in and the weapons/amour we must use. And by the way, this is not just about ST. It could be anything. Marvel, non-horror, reality TV etc. We need to be sensitive to the Lord's promting. It won't hit every believer at the same time and in the same way (for various reasons). But when it does we would do well to respond!
After watching a clip from season 4 when max was possessed and running away from vecna I had a second thought that this is somehow related to the Bible, let me use some bible context... we could see Max running away from vecna(devil) in a red, dark, spooky environment(hell) and after watching that clip only it made me think and opened my eyes that this has darker and hidden meanings that the writer of the movie is trying to portray. I don't want to look confused but this is my own opinion No hate to the show I actually watched from season 1 to 3 but not the end
I hear your points and appreciate your perspective. IMO, I don’t think anyone should watch Stranger Things. There’s a difference between reading a wicked thing in the Bible (inspired by God) vs seeing and hearing and immersing yourself into a multimillion dollar reenactment of demons possessing and slaughtering people after hunting them mercilessly (inspired by the Devil or at least man definitely not God). What good can come of it? This life is not a game, it’s not full of neutral things. It’s full of powers and principalities that would love nothing more than to damn you and all your closest friends and family to hell. In regards to your verse, I also think there’s a big difference between saying stronger brothers can eat meat sacrificed to false gods vs saying stronger brothers can watch demonic entertainment as long as they are actually just enjoying the demons getting beaten. I see the heart of where you’re coming from but imo those are not accurate comparisons.

I’m a Christian and absolutely love the Stranger Things franchise! Probably my favorite show on Netflix. Yes this season was very dark but at the end of the day it’s just a show.. So I didn’t feel any type of conviction watching it or anything that some Christians are talking about. Only thing that bothered me was the cursing and use of God’s name being used in vain.. But unfortunately most shows in this day and time are doing this
I also dislike how they use God's name in vain and how they swear a bit too much, I really hope there was someway to block them out when ever I watch the show.
Hey Tim, the last item mentioned, watching stranger things in heaven, you might try and unpack that, because there is a reason why God is separated from us. The reason He is separated from us is that He would kill us if we were to see Him I think that if you have the Holy Spirit He wouldn't but the idea stands. I wonder if the last statement or sequence of statements is true. I believe God separates Himself from us or certain things because He is Holy. Sorta like the Holy Spirit leaving Saul, or when it mentions do not grieve the Holy Spirit. I am not sure about Stranger Things, I havent watched it, it could be as you say a story of fiction that tries to portray a fiction reality that doesn't exist. But what I mentioned is worth thinking about because I would want to know what you think about God putting on Stranger Things to watch, what do you think about that?

SAME. The first three seasons were not that bad at all but the fourth season had A LOT of saying Jesus’s Name in Vain and saying God’s Name in Vain and so much eerieness. It was so creepy. I stopped watching.

Why would the Holy Spirit ask us to do that if what we watch and think about has no affect on our inner spiritual state and our appetite for Him? The real question is - Do I enjoy being with the Lord and reading the Bible more, or do I enjoy Netflix more? Can I spend two hours in the Lord and reading His word, or do I spend two hours in Netflix instead? It was never about should or shouldn’ts, but what it is that we really want..
I really like this video. I was looking for a video as a person who grew up with Stranger Things and wasn't a Christian when I first watched it in 2017 as a 6th grader. I am now in 11th grade and got saved 2 years ago. The lens through which I watched the latest season was different because I was examining things biblically, but being legalistic and pharisaic is unbiblical.
Hey man, just found your channel while doing some research for a video I'm doing this week on the same subject. Glad I found your content, keep up the good work dude!
I somewhat agree and understand your point of view. However I want to challenge the nuances a bit: The story analogy to the bible: It is definetely true that the Bible has some of the worst gore ever and some would say worst than Stranger Things. The issue is the form. Personally I felt like they didn't have to show some of the brutality the way they did (esp in Chrissy's scene). In addition, in the Bible there is a feeling of relief when the challenge is resolved. However in Stranger things, the issue is that it keeps escalating and it is designed to keep viewers shocked and in suspense. This goes for a lot of thriller, horror, and suspense movies. Another issue is the desensitization and overrationalization of the violence and gore that is culturally taking place not only in this series but in many others. Has anyone notice how much lore, gore, and violence has been added to so many new series and that there are so many more horror movies than anything else. We are overstimulated as a culture and it could lead to people potentially being okay with violence. Lastly, I found that this series is based on true events that happened before back in the day. This is not a rant about howthe series is evil and this is definitely not Satanic Panic but I think that the series definetely gives off further implications. Also I REFUSE to condemn anyone hwo watches this series bc everyone has a different relatioship with God and is built differently. Me personally, watching Stranger Things even in the harmless scenes made me wince and my back hairs was standing up😂.
I'm not a Christian, but I appreciate your perspective on this topic, especially after seeing a video where some Christians try to get others to stay away/not watch the show. It should come down to personal conviction. If some feel like they can't watch it, that's fine but let others who can watch it enjoy it without guilting them into thinking they can't/shouldn't. It's like alcoholism. Not everyone who drinks alcohol will become an alcoholic. For those that do, they should stay away from alcohol, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to stay away as well. Though you also shouldn't flaunt your "freedom" in front of the "weaker" Christians as Paul said. Just because you might not have a problem with alcohol and your friend does, doesn't mean you should bust out the beers every time that friend comes over. I haven't watched season 4 yet, but I was thinking of starting it this week. I love seasons 1-3. One thing I wanted to mention, I don't think I've heard someone use the term "the new creation" the way you did (or maybe it's just the way I heard it in the video). Are you referring to when someone becomes a Christian ("born again") and they become a new creation in Christ? Or are you referring to something else? If it's something else, then I'd be interested in hearing what your views are on "the new creation."
I would just like to s ay that I THOROUGHLY appreciate ALL of your comments on my videos so far. In fact, I kind of want to record a "response" video because several of the questions you raised were so good, and I do feel as though I have a good answer for them that would be different from what you've heard!And for exhibit A of _"Really Good Questions"_, is this one. The "New Creation" is the shorthand description of the "end state" promised by Christianity. From some of your other comments, I've gleaned you're not a Christian, and that a huge reason for that is that there has been a distinct lack of compelling answers regarding what the whole thing is supposedly about. Most Christians with whom I've spoken are also deeply confused about this, so it's no surprise that that confusion is so widespread. Most people think the Bible's story is all about "going to Heaven" with you die, because that's how Christians talk about it. But what it's REALLY about is "God's plan to restore all things in Heaven & on Earth in Christ." That's the thing I call the "New Creation". This is what's going on in Revelation 21 & 22, the last 2 chapters in the BIble. It's what the prophets were talking about whenever they mentioned the future God had planned, and it's also QUITE a bit more involved than the "floating on clouds singing to God" view. Hope that helps! Thanks for the patience in my getting back to you - I really want to deliver solid answers to your questions, because I think that they deserve that.

I mean, I posit that there MIGHT be alternate Universes, while also still believing in God. Take Dragon Ball Super for example. In that show there are multiple universes and each universe has many gods. However, there's only ONE, ultimate supreme God of EVERY Universe.
Yeah thats not what they mean. God knows that happens. First of all, generally, we know lucifer was an angel; supposedly gods favorite. This also mirrors how Dr. brenner always relied on 001 to keep everyone in line. Eleven is like the light side to this. She realized his behavior wasn't what should be happening, and she sent him to the upside down. Just like when lucifer became jealous of God's power, god sent him to his own place. *hell*. Just like when 001 got sent to the upside down, he created all these terrible things and sent things like the demogorgans, which would mirror demons in real-world situations. 001 was like an angel, then turned into Satan till a certain point where he had really messed with people and fought god. Just like in the show. He was defeated, but he will be he will be back into he is actually defeated. So no, she wasn't saying that "weed" was biblical elements." Looks like you need to look into things more before assuming. Have a good day.
Stranger things may not be moral.. cuz it's based mostly on children who were not trained up in God's ways; but it is an extremely realistic image of how humans are manipulated by the unseen enemy. A dimension of wicked things that wish to devour us, pouring into our reality through a tare in the veil... it's pretty biblical. Be ready. It's a message about the end times. For you. ;) But if there is objective morality, and people are bound by what's right and wrong whether they believe in it or not, then there would CERTAINLY be reason to be cautious with what you consume, and allow to enter into your mind. The contention of this video is that these things aren't wrong to consume in any regard, unless it specifically tempts you to do or desire wrong things. If you can assess it, without internalizing, while still ENJOYING it, then there's nothing wrong. If somebody came out of Stranger Things wanting to be like the lab scientists, or the Russians, or Vecna, I'd say they were worse off. But if somebody watches Stranger Things and is stirred by unconditional love between friends, heroic sacrifice, and the courage to do what's right even if it's terrifying, then they came away better for it. Ive seen people go through a demonic possession and there was absolutely no difference in the show. Saying because it's in the bible is like saying sex is in the bible so I have no problem watching p*rn. The first episode had nothing in it that I could see as a good moral compass and it grieved my soul to watch it. I guess the real question is, how much evilness are you willing to subject yourself to, to find a little sliver of good in something.
Ps. I stopped watching marvel for the very same reason. Some people think it's weird but I honestly barely watch TV anymore.

I certainly did not "enjoy" the parts of this show that portrayed something demonic. Those things are what set up the plot conflict for the heroes to overcome.
You're certainly entitled to your own way of viewing things - and Paul himself says "let each one be fully convinced in his (her) own mind". It certainly shouldn't stop us from fellowshipping as believers.

to be honest with you, before watching this season I was really confused about what to do, because when i first watched the first 3 seasons, my life wasn't in the faith as it is right now, so in that time I consumed this show without even questioning how it might affect my fight but now it's different.
So when this season released, I first tried to see objectively the good points and the bad points about this show, and i was confused because the show shows us really good values, but the general theme is pretty dark.
At the end I decided to watch it because even if it's dark, this is not an horror movie, when i say that, I mean that horror movies are made to be dark, only dark and hopeless. I don't think they are specifically made to make us feel bad, but in a way that's the purpose, but stranger things is different, Joyce believed in a miracle with blinking lights and she persevered even when people were looking at her as a fool and at the end that's what save her son. that's what motivated me to watch
But to also be honest I also let my emotions decide for me and that point wasn't good. I personally write a lot of stories, I have so many things that I wrote in my phone. Everyday a new idea is popping and a new scenario begins in my head, and every time I watch or I play something with a good storytelling i try to understand what i liked what can I apply from what I watched to my story to make a better character development, ect... and that's also what motivated me, but i know deep inside, that this is not a good thing.
So after finishing the season, i came here to see if I can watch the last two episodes that will be available in July 1st (and also because sometime i felt ok but sometime this question was bothering me) And thanks to you a finally have my answer
through my path with Jesus I became stronger in the faith, there is still some problematic areas but I know Jesus is helping me every day about that, but generally speaking my faith is much stronger that it ever was before, and I've never internalize anything that I saw, so about that point everything is ok, but i guess that i discovered that my judgement can be weak because of my emotions.
And I also want to thank you about something, at the end of the video you mentioned rewatching stranger things, and playing D&D during eternity and when you said that it makes me so happy. As I said before I make stories, and one of my goals is to make peoples dream. What i mean by that is that i want to make stories that are so good that peoples will be passionate about it and some peoples will want to create stories to, I don't know if i will be able to make it in that life time but I already thought about doing that during eternity, but to be honest i thought that i will not be able to tell my stories, it's not that these stories are super violent or anything like that, it's just that they are like every stories, there are good guys fighting evil, some deaths, sadness and other things like that, and i thought that these stories will not be well received in a place full of peace, love and joy, it's not that this isn't a good thing, God knows how much I want that peace, but I told myself "who would be interested about fight, death and sadness, nobody would want to see and remember that anymore" But thanks to you, I think that there is possibly a way to tell my stories during eternity.

I agree totally with what you had to say - there's a difference between a horrific story where good eventually triumphs over evil, and a story where there's no point and it's just mindless death and destruction. But I would still say you can watch it (if it doesn't violate your conscience), I would just say it's bad storytelling. :P
One thing that my wife and I do is watch shows and look for things that are "too incredible to be a coincidence." Joyce pursuing the lights and trusting that Will was still alive is such a perfect example of that. The way they unravel the mysteries in every season is miraculous, too. The way that the kids DISOBEYED HOPPER in Season 2 after they incapacitated Billy, so that they could go create a distraction so El and Hopper wouldn't be overrun by demodogs - they did the "wrong thing" in the moment, and it was the EXACT right thing that the side of "good" needed to win the day.
I would like to say this - it is ABSOLUTELY a good thing to want to tell stories -- God himself loves good stories of triumph over evil. All reality takes the shape of one! I think that good storytelling, and even being motivated to tell good stories is absolutely the thumbprint of God in you. It just can't become THE GOAL of your life. :)
But please, PLEASE continue to tell stories. It sounds as though this is something God specifically made you to do, and you should ABSOLUTELY pursue it. It changes everything when we recognize that eternity is a perfectly restored, flawless version of this existence. And while there is no PRESENCE of evil in that time, I fully believe that we will still be able to discuss and tell stories where it exists. We will often commemorate the "amazing things that God did" - well, what did God do, in every one of those amazing stories? In the Exodus, at Jesus's Resurrection, etc? He was conquering evil.

I completely agree with you! I was able to find beauty in Max's story especially this season because I think a lot of us go through the same thing (minus the monster element) and it was really touching to see her overcome it.
AbsoLUTELY. I agree wholeheartedly. Good stories often involve a great deal of darkness. And that darkness often has parallels in our own lives, both "mundane" and supernatural. It was hard to miss the symbolism of running from despair, depression, and hopelessness, into the arms of people who love you.
I watched the first few seasons, but this last season was a whole other ballgame. I had to turn it off, because I’m so sensitive to such dark things and it was very dark to me. I’m not legalistic in any way and am open to most things that are even opposed to my views. But this did not set well with my soul.

I'm bought-in on the idea that Christians don't have to avoid graphic content, but what is your take on "should" Christians watch content that was created with the intention of bringing dark spirits into the world?
For example, there are many horror movies wherein production, the creators call on spirits and want to manifest them through the screen. How does this play into Paul's teaching in Ephesians 6:12?
Many Christians are concerned about evil spirits influencing them and want to "close the gate" to evil spirits. They're concerned that by consuming certain media, they're "allowing" or "giving permission" to evil spirits to enter their homes. This ties into 'Satanic Panic' in the 80s and 90s. Ouija boards, Marilyn Manson, D&D, The Exorcist, etc.
Even though this is a UA-cam comment, I am honestly searching for truth here. - How do we be obedient to Christ first, and "be in the world" second?
I felt convicted on the last season especially. I loved the story but i didn't like all the J.C and G.D being thrown around. Our whole family started having nightmares around the time we started watching it. I'm praying whether it's from that or not but I think it is. I'm not scared of vecna or black widow spiders (used to have dreams of them when i was involved with witchcraft) and I was having dreams about both!! Plus theres a huge correlation about vecna being thrown to the upside down and lucifer falling like lighting to the earth and his battle with a "savior " and contempt for humans. He is elevated to an equal and "papa" is portrayed as a creator and manipulator. just interesting. I would recommend christians not watch and I'm gonna be praying over us and breaking that crap off our families. Disappointed a good story took it too far a few times and I don't like the direction it's heading.
I am a person that has watched a lot of horror movies before ebeung saved, and I'm not really bothered by stranger things. I don't get nightmares at all and even if I do which is really rare I pray it away. I don't think it's OK to generally say ever Christian shouldn't do this, becuase all of our convictions are different. Some people may not be able to take the amount of gore or scary elements in a movie , but I don't rlly care about it as much. At the end of the day it all boils down to, is me watching this going to make my relationship with God worse ? If the answer is yes then don't watch it.
This is a very interesting video that touches on some semi-relevant points in regards to a weaker brother or sister but i think it misses the much bigger picture.
We often view these matters as it relates to us on a personal level but we need to understand that there is indeed a spiritual war and we are in it whether we like it or not.
The enemy is called "the father of lies" and there is a clear strategy to de-senitise and confuse Christians and non-christians alike about truth. Truth is critical to the Kingdom and salvation.
The greatest trick of the devil is to make people think he doesn't exist or to change people's perception of him so, in that equation God then becomes irrelevant.
You see @the Overlap life with Tim Barber, this isn't just about how you and other Christians experience your entertainment. Its about the subtle and overt impact on the those without truth.
I love ST (its entertaining and addictive). I could not wait for season 4 even though my spirit was being nudged before that. I watched the first 8 episodes and badly wanted to continue, but just could not. The Anti God (anti truth) agenda was just too strong and I could not support it.
I do not fear entertainment...it has its place. But I cannot support anything that is clearly designed against the Kingdom (even if its wrapped up in entertainment).
There are many believers who are either dying or waking up to the anti-christ agenda. Culture, system and mindset designed for deception. It is not a coincidence that those who have been enjoying ST are becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Could that be discernment? Could it be the Holy Spirit!
As Paul contemplates in 1 Corinthians 6 "all things are permissible for me (In other words I don't view it as sin) but not everthing is beneficial" (in other words its not health to my faith or the faith of others). Not to mention the numerous scriptures that advises us on the healthy things we ought to meditate on, guarding our hearts and minds, the war we are in and the weapons/amour we must use.
And by the way, this is not just about ST. It could be anything. Marvel, non-horror, reality TV etc. We need to be sensitive to the Lord's promting. It won't hit every believer at the same time and in the same way (for various reasons). But when it does we would do well to respond!
After watching a clip from season 4 when max was possessed and running away from vecna I had a second thought that this is somehow related to the Bible, let me use some bible context... we could see Max running away from vecna(devil) in a red, dark, spooky environment(hell) and after watching that clip only it made me think and opened my eyes that this has darker and hidden meanings that the writer of the movie is trying to portray.
I don't want to look confused but this is my own opinion

I hear your points and appreciate your perspective. IMO, I don’t think anyone should watch Stranger Things. There’s a difference between reading a wicked thing in the Bible (inspired by God) vs seeing and hearing and immersing yourself into a multimillion dollar reenactment of demons possessing and slaughtering people after hunting them mercilessly (inspired by the Devil or at least man definitely not God). What good can come of it?
This life is not a game, it’s not full of neutral things. It’s full of powers and principalities that would love nothing more than to damn you and all your closest friends and family to hell.
In regards to your verse, I also think there’s a big difference between saying stronger brothers can eat meat sacrificed to false gods vs saying stronger brothers can watch demonic entertainment as long as they are actually just enjoying the demons getting beaten. I see the heart of where you’re coming from but imo those are not accurate comparisons.

I’m a Christian and absolutely love the Stranger Things franchise! Probably my favorite show on Netflix. Yes this season was very dark but at the end of the day it’s just a show.. So I didn’t feel any type of conviction watching it or anything that some Christians are talking about. Only thing that bothered me was the cursing and use of God’s name being used in vain.. But unfortunately most shows in this day and time are doing this

Hey Tim, the last item mentioned, watching stranger things in heaven, you might try and unpack that, because there is a reason why God is separated from us. The reason He is separated from us is that He would kill us if we were to see Him I think that if you have the Holy Spirit He wouldn't but the idea stands. I wonder if the last statement or sequence of statements is true. I believe God separates Himself from us or certain things because He is Holy. Sorta like the Holy Spirit leaving Saul, or when it mentions do not grieve the Holy Spirit. I am not sure about Stranger Things, I havent watched it, it could be as you say a story of fiction that tries to portray a fiction reality that doesn't exist. But what I mentioned is worth thinking about because I would want to know what you think about God putting on Stranger Things to watch, what do you think about that?
I am from Brazil. I watched the first three seasons, I liked it, I didn't think it was very dark, but the fourth... I was very uncomfortable, I finished it, but I regretted having watched it.
SAME. The first three seasons were not that bad at all but the fourth season had A LOT of saying Jesus’s Name in Vain and saying God’s Name in Vain and so much eerieness. It was so creepy. I stopped watching.

Watching violence on screen is ok because the Bible contains accounts of violence?
Does that mean we could all just go and watch whatever content that gratifies our desires for entertainment? Doesn’t the Bible have an honest account of every sin man is capable of committing, including demonic torture, incest, adultery, blasphemy and witchcraft? If it’s in the Bible I can watch it for entertainment too?
This statement is so wrong in so many ways, brother, that I would be careful to put it in a public video that’s might mislead those still yet unable to discern good from evil.
Whatever is pure, good, lovely, fix your thoughts on those things. The scripture further reminds us to fix our eyes on Jesus.
Why would the Holy Spirit ask us to do that if what we watch and think about has no affect on our inner spiritual state and our appetite for Him?
The real question is - Do I enjoy being with the Lord and reading the Bible more, or do I enjoy Netflix more? Can I spend two hours in the Lord and reading His word, or do I spend two hours in Netflix instead?
It was never about should or shouldn’ts, but what it is that we really want..

I really like this video. I was looking for a video as a person who grew up with Stranger Things and wasn't a Christian when I first watched it in 2017 as a 6th grader. I am now in 11th grade and got saved 2 years ago. The lens through which I watched the latest season was different because I was examining things biblically, but being legalistic and pharisaic is unbiblical.

I somewhat agree and understand your point of view. However I want to challenge the nuances a bit:
The story analogy to the bible: It is definetely true that the Bible has some of the worst gore ever and some would say worst than Stranger Things. The issue is the form. Personally I felt like they didn't have to show some of the brutality the way they did (esp in Chrissy's scene). In addition, in the Bible there is a feeling of relief when the challenge is resolved. However in Stranger things, the issue is that it keeps escalating and it is designed to keep viewers shocked and in suspense. This goes for a lot of thriller, horror, and suspense movies.
Another issue is the desensitization and overrationalization of the violence and gore that is culturally taking place not only in this series but in many others. Has anyone notice how much lore, gore, and violence has been added to so many new series and that there are so many more horror movies than anything else. We are overstimulated as a culture and it could lead to people potentially being okay with violence.
Lastly, I found that this series is based on true events that happened before back in the day.
This is not a rant about howthe series is evil and this is definitely not Satanic Panic but I think that the series definetely gives off further implications. Also I REFUSE to condemn anyone hwo watches this series bc everyone has a different relatioship with God and is built differently.
Me personally, watching Stranger Things even in the harmless scenes made me wince and my back hairs was standing up😂.
Oh also I actually like the storyline. It reminds me of Xmen for some reason but a little darker

I'm not a Christian, but I appreciate your perspective on this topic, especially after seeing a video where some Christians try to get others to stay away/not watch the show. It should come down to personal conviction. If some feel like they can't watch it, that's fine but let others who can watch it enjoy it without guilting them into thinking they can't/shouldn't. It's like alcoholism. Not everyone who drinks alcohol will become an alcoholic. For those that do, they should stay away from alcohol, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to stay away as well. Though you also shouldn't flaunt your "freedom" in front of the "weaker" Christians as Paul said. Just because you might not have a problem with alcohol and your friend does, doesn't mean you should bust out the beers every time that friend comes over. I haven't watched season 4 yet, but I was thinking of starting it this week. I love seasons 1-3.
One thing I wanted to mention, I don't think I've heard someone use the term "the new creation" the way you did (or maybe it's just the way I heard it in the video). Are you referring to when someone becomes a Christian ("born again") and they become a new creation in Christ? Or are you referring to something else? If it's something else, then I'd be interested in hearing what your views are on "the new creation."
I would just like to s ay that I THOROUGHLY appreciate ALL of your comments on my videos so far. In fact, I kind of want to record a "response" video because several of the questions you raised were so good, and I do feel as though I have a good answer for them that would be different from what you've heard!And for exhibit A of _"Really Good Questions"_, is this one.
The "New Creation" is the shorthand description of the "end state" promised by Christianity. From some of your other comments, I've gleaned you're not a Christian, and that a huge reason for that is that there has been a distinct lack of compelling answers regarding what the whole thing is supposedly about.
Most Christians with whom I've spoken are also deeply confused about this, so it's no surprise that that confusion is so widespread.
Most people think the Bible's story is all about "going to Heaven" with you die, because that's how Christians talk about it. But what it's REALLY about is "God's plan to restore all things in Heaven & on Earth in Christ."
That's the thing I call the "New Creation". This is what's going on in Revelation 21 & 22, the last 2 chapters in the BIble. It's what the prophets were talking about whenever they mentioned the future God had planned, and it's also QUITE a bit more involved than the "floating on clouds singing to God" view.

Yeah thats not what they mean. God knows that happens. First of all, generally, we know lucifer was an angel; supposedly gods favorite. This also mirrors how Dr. brenner always relied on 001 to keep everyone in line. Eleven is like the light side to this. She realized his behavior wasn't what should be happening, and she sent him to the upside down. Just like when lucifer became jealous of God's power, god sent him to his own place. *hell*. Just like when 001 got sent to the upside down, he created all these terrible things and sent things like the demogorgans, which would mirror demons in real-world situations. 001 was like an angel, then turned into Satan till a certain point where he had really messed with people and fought god. Just like in the show. He was defeated, but he will be he will be back into he is actually defeated. So no, she wasn't saying that "weed" was biblical elements." Looks like you need to look into things more before assuming. Have a good day.
Stranger things may not be moral.. cuz it's based mostly on children who were not trained up in God's ways; but it is an extremely realistic image of how humans are manipulated by the unseen enemy. A dimension of wicked things that wish to devour us, pouring into our reality through a tare in the veil... it's pretty biblical. Be ready. It's a message about the end times. But if there is objective morality, and people are bound by what's right and wrong whether they believe in it or not, then there would CERTAINLY be reason to be cautious with what you consume, and allow to enter into your mind.
The contention of this video is that these things aren't wrong to consume in any regard, unless it specifically tempts you to do or desire wrong things. If you can assess it, without internalizing, while still ENJOYING it, then there's nothing wrong.
