- Here, we've added a video exclusive to the Ford Edge, demonstrating how to open and start the push button start model with a dead key fob battery. And it also has a hidden key hole.
This is a back up plan that works. Of course, starting the car assumes that the start battery is good. But if not, we can at least we can get you inside and ready for a jump start!

This has to be the MOST INFORMATIVE to the point video on dead smart keys I have ever watched. Thank you!
And thank you! Glad to help.
Very clear instructions here. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the fob is extremely awkward to open...Thank you!
You're very welcome...
This was perfect! The manual I got with my 2016 Edge indicated there would be a pocket to stick the key fob in. However, mine is just as you showed in the video and your instructions worked flawlessly. I had been fumbling around trying to figure out how to get the fob "buttons facing back, keying facing up" as the manual called for. Now I know with this slot it's buttons down, key ring to the back. FYI - this was to do the procedure in the manual to recall the factory keyless entry code for the door.
Glad to help. And yes there are additional reasons to need the back location.
Thank you sooo much. I got locked out and fidgeted on and on with the manual key. Didn’t know what I did but it finally opened. Have been so uneasy cause I really didn’t know what I hit to make it open. Great information. Thank you!!!
Glad to help. Sounds like you might want to practice with the key a bit...
Thank you for posting this. Worked like a charm.👏🙌🙏💖
Glad to help...
Excellent how-to video. Watching with sound off. Visuals alone tell me exactly what I need to do.
Glad to help...

Thanx a lit!

I wonder if any notches, chips, or damages will prevent the car from recognizing the fob?
or is it like a chip in there or something?
Well if you are asking about damage to the fob itself, then yes its possible. There is an entire circuit board and multiple chips inside.
It appears that there is a "well" at the bottom of the console, but none exists in mine. Nothing next to 12 VDC outlet.
Bottom and forward. Very hard to see,, so go by feel...
just got 2012 ford edge, were do i find code for door butttons and fob does not turn car on but every thing else works
Only Ford can supply the code for the door, which won't help you start it. However, the back up slot from the video should work, assuming you have the correct key fob...
The cap can be placed back over the key hole correct?
Yes indeed. Back to front, pretty much the reverse of taking it off...
Didn't work on my 2016 Edge. Followed instructions, but car would not start once key fob was located in center console slot.
Assuming the start battery is good (charged), what does the instrument panel tell you when you try to start??
My car keeps saying see Manuel full accessory active then shuts down
Have you placed the fob in the back up slot?? If not, try it...
I was smart enough to ask for a key. It way easy to open the fob. I don't like the car though.
Sorry, can't help with disliking the car...
I wonder why my key won't even turn when i stick it in the door lock? It slides in but doesn't budge. I've replaced my keyfob battery and I'm pretty sure the car battery is dead. It hasn't been driven in a while.
The ONLY time I've seen something like this, the key belonged to a second car! Do you own a second Ford???
In fact, if you have a second car, there may not be anything wrong with the fob at all.
DashboardSymbols.com this is the only car. First vehicle with this push start thingie. It's my moms but she hasn't driven it in a year cause she has dementia.
Well, I'm sorry to say that it is likely the manufacturer simply cut the key incorrectly. The remaining options are a second key fob (the car would have been sold with 2) or having the dealer recut the key, which should be doable. A locksmith may also be able to do this. I'm guessing you have separate transportation and thus time to deal with this. Very sorry about your mom. Not at all an easy situation.
DashboardSymbols.com thank you very much. I have my vehicle. Thank goodness. Thank you for the suggestions as well. I'll try locksmith.
How does a person get OUT of an edge if the doors are locked and the battery dies? Thanks.
This is an interesting question. Its not specifically covered in the manual, but the doors should simply unlock and open from the inside. There IS specific mention of a rear door override. If the doors have been locked electronically, pulling a rear door handle once unlocks the door and a second time opens it. This may work the same way with the front doors, or at worst, you can get out through the back.
Next time we have an Edge, we'll have to check this out!
OK, let me back up a bit. My mother bought a new '17 edge last year, and I got to thinking about it when I was driving it around recently. It has no door locks that you can manually slide or pull up to unlock. Went through the manual, and I couldn't find anything on this. So you think, by pulling the rear seat door handle twice, it should unlock? I will check this when I get a chance. Thanks for your fast reply.
Actually, what I believe is that ANY door will open if the power goes out. But the rear doors are noted specifically, since the lock switches are in the front.
Thanks!
You're welcome.
I did that but placed the key fob in the proper place for my ford 2016 , it just seems that the car also died? nothings happen , the key battry is not supposed to die in just 5 months. It is like a big FU from the manufacturer.
It sounds like the main 12 volt starting battery was the problem, in which case the video can get you in, but a jump start would be needed. Has this been resolved? Was something left on?
DashboardSymbols.com apparently , for some reasons , the rain we had two days ago had something to do with the car battery to be completely drained , or it was drained for some other reasons.
So the key batteries are good yes? You're right, 5 months is way too soon for then (there's two) to die.
man the battery in my mom's 2016 edge died this morning... getting that keyhole cover off the door is such a pain in the arse it's ridiculous. It took me half a damn hour wiggling that thing and pushing it toward the rear of the car before it finally came off, and that included sticking a big flat head screwdriver in between the cover and the actual handle and trying to push the cover to the rear some by twisting the screwdriver... WHILE killing my other thumb pushing the key up into the hole... and if THAT wasn't bad enough... taking the battery out? Jesus H Christ... why are simple things so damn complicated now?
Are you supposed to like tilt the key once it's up in the hole toward the front or back of the car (cause mine can tilt, does it more towards the rear)? Or just push it straight up as hard as you can and hold it there?
Boy I feel for you. I do wonder why the cap was so hard to remove. Had someone a while struggle with a Hyundai, but once off realized it had been broken and glued back on!! Then again, yours wiggled. No idea. And so pointless. Why cover the damn key hole???
Lost. The. Fob. How. Do. I find. It
Sorry. No method to "ping" it or have it call out. You'll need your dealer or a good automotive locksmith to make a new one (and make 2!)...
