      I can't find any jacks that look that well built Scotty. Can you list what jacks you recommend. I just ended up using 6 ton jack stands that are 14 - 15 inchs with out extending them so it is impossible for them to fail. Even though my jacks say double locking the double lock does not look safe to me.

      Despite zero experience, obvious burst radiator hose, duck tape, and a few gallons of water will get that car rolling home again. Duck Tape. Don't leave home without it.

      I watched a guy changing a transmission in a 325 in his driveway using an 8ft 2x4 as a prop. The car was 50 degrees leaning and they were kneeling under it.
      I guess at least the plank didn't have a ratchet.

      I do. My dad has one fail in the driveway when I was just a little kid. Luckily he wasn’t under it and my brother and myself were far enough away. Had it up in the air changing the tire or an oil change and it slipped off. Can’t remember how he got it off the ground w/o a wheel.

    The good ones go in back on a rear wheel drive car; right? I had tires that were just 10+ years old still had mileage per warranty but it's which comes first. New tires & an updated full 4 wheel alignment fixed the wondering problem. Proper maintenance isn't cheep unless it's your car.🤔💖 Love to watch you work!!!😁

    I agree with you on putting the best on the front. I've had arguments with tire dealers about this. I ended up having the tires rotated elsewhere after buying 2 new ones.

    The best part of the video was the Gieco commercial that played halfway through; The family with a new home having a "Ratt problem" made my day. First time that I've seen it.
    It was cool to learn that dirty coolant could effect the computer.

    Scotty is right on this one. The front tires have a massive impact on the handling of a FWD car. I once had an issue where the car pulled to one side. Turned out the alignment was fine but the right tire was more worn than the left tire (thanks roundabouts). Replaced both front tires and it was completely solved.

    I have always used the best tires on the front, even on back wheel drives. Most of the braking happens in the front, so just makes sense for me in a safety perspective.

    So glad you mentioned that you put the good tires on the front. I remember when I got two new tires for my car and the guys at Costco said Their policy was to put the new tires in the back because of traction. It didn’t make sense to me since it was a FWD. I usually would go straight home and move the new back tires to the front smh 🤦🏻‍♂️

      Kid got into a wreck and one of the companies got sued. Attorney argued that tires were new but dealer put them in the front. Nice kid. Wreck caused TBI. Kid was never the same. Started then.

    A mechanic once told me to have your best tires in the back , because if you use bad ones in the back , and they lose adherence you cannot control anything since they are in the back and you can't steer ... So he said good in the back and bad in the front ... I disagree too

    i understand what you're saying about the better tires being on the front , i sometimes go by spec from Michelin though where they state higher treads should be at the back because of lighter weight, liked the video , we mostly do it as you do because we do alignments as well , keep up the good work

      OK so if the lower tread tires are in the front, the engine weight pushes them down more onto the pavement giving more traction? Is that it? It seems there are two possible situations here, either a blowout or fishtailing event. With blowout I'd thought it would be better to have the newest tires in the front because it would decrease the risk of a front blowout where the steering is.

    As someone who works with tires, and has looked into a lot of stuff, having the better tires in the rear is better than having them in the front in rain and snow because it helps to prevent fish tailing. In front wheel drive cars, rotating tires properly and on time is very important because if you don't, the fronts will wear much faster and the rears will begin cupping, which creates uneven spots on the tires. The issue with this car was likely the tread difference as well as probably some cupping on the tires from late rotations.

      Discard the word "better" from this discussion. Always have excellent tyres on the front. If you lose traction there, nothing good follows. Fish-tailing has a lot to do with the competence of the driver in adverse conditions.
      If you're going to have a blowout at 100 km/h on dry dirt/rubble, the rear is a safe place for it to happen (as I have found).

      @@brianvogt8125 I agree that a rear tire blowing out is much safer, especially in a front wheel drive vehicle. I also agree that fishtailing can be fixed by the driver skills. I live in Southern California, and most people (despite rainy season coming every year) still can't drive in the rain. So, people spin out all the time, so unless the driver knows what they're doing they need the good tires on the rear. I definitely do prefer the better tires on the front and I have a RWD vehicle, but that's because I know how to handle the rain, snow, and how to recover from a skid. But, for those who don't know how, they need the good tires in the rear.

      Thanks for bringing this up. And sharing knowledge. Trying to figure this out. Seems like there might be both good reasons to have the better tires on either front or back depending on the circumstances. Seems the fishtailing could be more about adverse conditions or driving too fast for those conditions. I have a front wheel drive car and put the better tires on the front because I would prefer a blowout in back instead of the front where the steering is.

    Costco refused to install new tires in the front despite my express instruction that I want the new tires in the front on my Sienna FWD only. So, I ended up rotating them myself as soon as I got home!

      Paul Cheang if you are getting only two new tires, they do go on the back regardless of fwd or rwd. Scotty is wrong in this. Reason being you have bad tires in the back you can easily find yourself in a ditch or spinning into another lane when the road is wet. Dry pavement it doesn’t really matter though.

      Have managed to see the aftermath of understeer in the rain around a curve, and also have been the victim of oversteer in the rain (in my tires defense I was actually trying to avoid an accident of someone running a redlight as I was making a left with an arrow and floored it, many years ago not sure how much tread was on each though but safe to say it would have happened regardless). I understand both the arguments for each, as you can argue that if you had a blowout due to worn tires (using the 2 tire purchase method, and most of your driving time will be on dry pavement) you would rather have it happen on a rear tire not a steer tire, especially when you consider the majority of vehicles have most of their weight on the front tires, but you can go back to the understeer in the rain as the idea is that you will notice it, slow down, and regain control which is simpler than trying to regain control if your rear swings around as the everyday driver won't have the knowledge or skills to regain control. I personally do prefer to replace all 4 tires though, helps to keep things even for treadwear warranties, but do also drive a Bronco, so I have more weight on the road than a small car and try to avoid driving at excessive speeds increasing any risks of losing traction. Now if we could educate people on the proper use of temporary spare tires as both temporary and not putting them on a steer axle, we might be doing some good in the world...

    I used to autocross back in the day and I remember a guy who had a turbo'd FC3S and he was having a hard time driving his cars through the slalom and hard turns. He was complaining that he just got 4 new tires. Turns out the tires were directional and he had 2 tires facing the wrong direction.

      A repair place did that to me. I caught it by inspecting the car prior to taking and told them to fix it. Zero cares giving by companies any longer. It literally says the direction of the tire on it. They had to have seen it.

      Test drove a car yrs ago & felt like complete garbage. Pulled back into the dealership & instantly looked at the tires. 2 front ones were spinning the wrong way. Guess that huge arrow showing direction of rotation only means something if it's YOUR car. Just like hundreds of other jobs

    Howdy Scotty!! I was told DECADES ago to put the best tires on the back. But that never made sense to me. So, I'm right there with you, bud!! Front tires do the most braking AND they steer the car, that's where I want my best rubber. Front drive asks a LOT out of your front-end!

      Yeah I've been putting the best tires on front of my front wheel drive car for years now. No blowouts at high speeds though so I can't say for sure one way or another. Just seems like want the best tires where the steering and engine weight is. But I don't run bald tires either. I replace the back too if they start going too low tread. It's more like I buy two new tires at a time and the older tires are on the back. But the back tires aren't getting as much wear so they aren't too low or uneven tread. So I don't think the blowout risk is exactly "high" back there.

    I'm amazed with the dirty transmission fluid and bad shifting problem. Only an experienced mechanic such as Scotty can figure these kind of things out.

      The reason you put the good tires in the back has nothing to do with handling. It's because a blowout in a rear tire, especially at speed, is a lot more dangerous than a blowout in a front tire.

      It seems like I've had blowout in rear before and didn't fishtail or affect my steering. Just heard it and felt it and didn't lose any handling just slowed down and pulled off the road. If recall it was about 55 mph or something. But maybe the higher speeds 70s or 80s people drive now on the interstate it's different. High speeds or wet conditions might affect this. I'm trying to figure this out.

    Scotty, I understand that for traction purposes you'd want your best tires on the front for a front wheel drive vehicle but I can tell you from having experienced it myself that you dont want your rear tires to be much different in tread and traction then the front ones. Years ago I had to stop abruptly on a wet road and the car started fish tailing because my rear tires did not have much tread left on them compared to.the front ones. As you break you feel the road more from the front because all the weight goes there but if your rear tires aren't that good it will play tricks on you where the front will give you a wrong sense of feeling of the overall breaking system. I enjoy your channel and your experience as a mechanic .

    Scotty, the tire engineers say to put the best tires on the rear, the reasoning is that if a tire blows out on the rear you have a greater chance of losing control of the car and fish-tailing or possibly rolling it over. It's easier to control a blow out if it's on the front. Also, with most cars having ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) you don't have to worry too much about the front braking performance.

      I can understand about fishtailing but it doesn't seem like if a tire blows on the front that it would be "easier to control" because all the steering is in the front and also the engine weight.       @@tw8464 I think also for hydroplaning, if the front tires lose traction then the back tires with more tread performed marginally better. I'm sure its very negligible though.

      @Archit3ct1 I could be wrong for various reasons. It might be the greater engine weight helps tires with less tread get traction. So you have the better tread tires on the lighter weight rear. I've had trouble though with my front wheel drive car. If the tires on the front are at all lower tread it wants to spin out on the steep hills around here when the roads are wet. For example will pull up to a stop sign on a hill, stop and start to go again and if front tires are lower tread it often wants to spin. So that's part of why I'd put the better tires on the front. But I can also see the hydroplaning issue so I need to look into this more

    Hi Scotty, recently read some "EXPERTS" saying better tread on the back because if they lose traction the car/truck will have the tendency to go sideways although this went against everything I believed. Not long after that I had two winter tires on the front of a FWD vehicle. In hard pack snow it actually got a little scary the back was drifting.
    Now I use four winter tires on winter/four summers in summer, and rotate them all frequently enough so there's never that much difference in tread between front and back.
    An extra used set of four factory alloys for most cars are in good supply and usually pretty cheap. Eliminates the need to remount tires on the rims twice a year in northern climates. Well worth it for a long term vehicle in my opinion.

    I used to work for Michelin (manufacturing of tires), the best tires need to be in the back. This has been proved time and time again on their test track under all types of wet and slick conditions. If your front starts sliding, it is much easier to correct steering than if your back end slides out from you going around a curve on a wet road. Doesn't matter what whether it is front or rear wheel drive. It is a traction problem, not a drive problem. Granted rear wheel drives are not known for handling slick surfaces in the first place. The best tread in the back is a good temporary measure until you can replace all 4 tires. 4 new tires beats that every time.

    When I got a pair of new tires to replace the front tires on my front wheel drive car (for the same reason as the video), they told me they had to rotate the new ones to the back... I think they are full of it, too...

      No, they are not "full of it" that is the industry standard today, to have the newer tires on the rear. This is to prevent hydroplaning or at least minimize the effects of it. This was just recently changed as the new standard I personally think this was to have tire companies make more money, because the front tires wear faster than the rear ones.

      @@AaronFernandes__ you're right but it's not to make more money. Having the weaker tiers in front helps you feel when hydroplaning sooner before you completely lose control. Also apparently for the average driver is easier to recover loss of traction in front as opposed to having your tail suddenly kick out.

      My tire place insists on always putting the new tires in the rear as well. I always believed that the new ones go in front. Next time, I am replacing all 4 , even though 2 of them still have some thread left, but the other 2 are really worn.

      Good luck rotating my tires. I'm running staggered. Down side is, I replace the rears a lot more often than the rears. But braking helps more even wear all around.

      I think they just do it for the money. I had worn tires in the front and good ones on the rear, my stability was so poor on dry roads, after rotating them, it had better stability. I'm getting 4 new tires on all tomorrow since the shop I used to take it rotated them wrong. Uneven wear on BOTH sides...uugh

      If they're on the same axle it doesn't matter, i.e., two brands on one axle and two on the other. But if you have 3 of the same and 1 different it's another story.

    I had a Volvo V70 turbo with 500.000 km when I sold it. Never changed clutch, waterpump etc. only oil and timingbelt and breake pads. The same for my previous Volvos.

    I got into an argument with the guy at the (Costo, I believe) tire shop about putting the two brand new tires I was getting on the rear of my front wheel drive 2004 Lexus Es330. They had these stupid posters on the wall about sliding sideways in a corner when icy, and that's why they have to put the new tires on the rear. I argued for a while saying all the things you did. I want the new tires on front in case my wife gets a blowout on the freeway. Front tire blowouts are terrible. Obviously I want the best tires on front. They refused to put the new tires on front. They moved the older rear tires on front and the new ones on the rear. I had to swap them myself when I got home. Idiots. I've seen the same signs at Walmart tire, Discount Tire... They all seem to be doing it now.

      As a prior tire tech for a similar wholesale company, I find their refusal annoying. Yes, from a training and safety standpoint, you are supposed to put them on the rear for the sake of hydroplaning/general loss of control; it’s much easier to handle the front of the car in a slide or hydroplaning if the back isn’t fishtailing; you’d likely be able to get it under control. With all this being said, I had plenty of customers that wanted them in the front. If it went against the training, we simply noted on the paperwork that the customer preferred us to put them on the front and released us from any liability, end of story, not refuse.

      No.. Always put the best tires on the front of any vehicle. Stop and think about it... If, on a rear wheel drive vehicle, you put a crappy Tire on the front driver side and it blows out you may loose control. Steering a vehicle is always more important than driving a vehicle forward. So it doesn't matter if it's rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive the best tires always go on the front.

      The only thing having the best tires on the back does is help prevent oversteer in rear wheel drive vehicles when the road is wet. I would much rather have the best tires in the front, because oversteer is much more correctable and controllable from the driver’s seat. Even then, most of the braking in ANY car is in the front, so the best tires will help you stop the best.

      @@Userjdjddss in an ideal world this would always happen... sometimes circumstances occurs where you were forced into a situation and having one odd ball Tire. Perhaps you had a flat in a tire shop you went to didn't have a replacement ... who knows what can happen.
      Also it's okay to have two different sets of paired. they don't all four have to match but you need to have the same pairs front and back.

    Here is the reason they say to put good tires in the Back: in case you have to break hard and steer (e.g. highway accident) you can lose the back end if you have bad tires there. The accident statistics seem to match that idea. Thanks for the Videos. Love the channel!
    Edit: It´s probably more important here in Germany then in the US.

    Guy from snow country here. I once had only 2 snow tires. I put them on the front (front wheel drive), thinking the better traction is needed there for the same reasons you said. Had terrible fishtailing problems due to loss of grip on the back end and did a 270 spin going down a slight grade. In poor grip situations, grip is critical in the back.

    A lot of people think that new tires should be rotated to the back to prevent "fishtailing".
    This is outdated thinking, based on the old rule of thumb with rear wheel drive cars. No longer applies.

    I agree with him on that depending on the drive train you want the one with better tread on front or back...I know most companies and other will talk about the hydroplane however that only depends on the street how much water is on the street and how fast your driving....my question for you Scotty is what would be the best for the better tire(s) for an AWD would it matter?

      NEVER buy tires from Sam's club. They even rotated the tires wrong, which resulted in my car pulling to one direction. They couldn't even program an TPMS sensor, in which i was forced to do it at the dealership. Never again!!

      One went flat, they replaced that one. Extra effort to move the good rear crosswind to the front, then install the Goodyear on the rear.
      I've been travelling and had to go to a Walmart to have a tire replaced, since they're open on Sunday, longer hours and easy to find. You have to tell them to put the new one to the rear.
      A good video for the driver checking their own car for a wobble.
      Round rires
      No wierd wear
      No play in the bushings or ball joints
      Mismatched tires or a thick tread and a balding tread on the other
      Poor inflation
      Last but not least, warped rotors or worn shoes... But you have to take off the tire to see that usually.

    Up here during the Winter, the tire store recommends the newer tires to go on the back (of a FWD car); they claim it's to prevent the car from spinning out when you hit a patch of compacted snow during a turn. The thinking is apparently if the front grips better than the back, the backend will swing out; and people instinctively handle understeer better than oversteer.

    Well having worked on cars myself for a dealer, customers routinely refuse to accept advice given to them from techs. The Tire Shop may have warned the customer about mismatched tires and they just refused to believe it or didn't want to pay to have it done right.
    (edit) And the policy at most shops is that new tires go on the rear. You'll usually see a diagram of it or something at your local tire shop. I've always disagreed with it, but them doing that doesn't mean they were idiots. Just following policy.

      The reason that good tires should always go on the rear regardless of if it’s FWD or RWD is traction while turning, worn tires on the rear will cause fishtailing and could cause the car to spin out more easily, sure, new tires on the front are good for braking in a straight line but literally any other movement of the car requires the backend to have more traction

      Yeah I made that mistake as a teenager. I had a flat and put the spare on but the spare was an old radial tire that didn't match the other tires. It was horrible didn't handle well pulled to one side noisy definitely a problem. Realized different tires don't mix. Best to have same brand same tread basically same tire on all four.

    From what i recall, bad tires in front is related to driving in a wet environment... Hyrdoplaning resulting in understeer vs oversteer.... But i understand Sotty's logic.

    I’m no mechanic. I am an electrician but I went to tires plus and got new tires for my 2004 Acura RSX (front wheel drive) and they put the good BRAND NEW tires on the back just like these guys!!! Gosh thank you so much I’m going to flip them things myself. I even told them don’t you want the best tires in the front because its front wheel drive?! Like gosh some people just don’t have common sense!! Lol

    WOW! It was nice to hear you talk about the idiots that would put the bad tires on the front. Back in the 60's I talked to a guy that worked at a service plaza on the NYS Thruway. An older lady pulled in to the tire area. She said that the car was riding funny and wanted the winter air changed for the summer air. Her guy back home charged her for that fine service at every season change. Anything for a buck!

    My car would literally drive different after someone else would drive it. All I could figure was that the computer had adjusted to them. Am I crazy?

    Thanks Scotty, great video again!! Greetings from the UK - I’m a proud owner of a 91k mile 2009 Toyota Avensis 2.0 diesel ‘station wagon’ 6 speed manual that had it’s MOT today. Needless to say, a walk in the park! I bought this baby at ten years old... I’ve owned 9 BMWs and don’t have the guts to buy anything other now than a Toyota or a Lexus!!
