Another reason to prefer manuals; I once bought a one-owner pickup...for $200. 310,000 miles and about a third of the paint on it when I got it, and 350,000 when the transmission died. This man says what all us real mechanics that have experienced all kinds a craziness of being a mechanic want to tell everyone. Lol. Kudos to you Scotty
If 90% of engine wear happens at Startup, imagine how long engines would last if they designed them to circulate oil when you turned the key first before the engine started.
EW: There are systems called "Pre-oilers" that circulate the oil prior to start. In the past they were used on some large aircraft radial engines. Some large industrial equipment may have them.
If you have a Ford you can push the gas pedal all the way down, that way it cuts fuel and you can crank the engine until the oil pressure light turns off, then start the engine.
Edmund Witkowski Let me refute Scotty’s comment. If you use say, Mobil 1. It’s been proven how it embeds itself into the metal. Plus residual doesn’t drain to pan. So does Mobil 1 really cause damage at startup? I say no!!!
I've actually tested the AC thing. On a 2014 Ford Focus Ti 5 door, you get 1.5 MPG less with AC on and windows rolled up. If you roll the windows all the way down, it loses that minimal 1.5 mpg and can sometimes lose up to 3 to 4 mpg due to aerodynamic drag. Modern AC compressors are indeed more economical than windows rolled down.
Cold Gasoline: When I was a teenager living in Florida, (which has high temperature swings from morning to noon in some winters), I filled my 1968 Mercury Montego tank with gas on a cold winter morning. Then after making a 30 mile round trip and parking the car, Gasoline was leaking out of the gas cap! So it wasted gas buying it cold and filling up to the top!
😔 I was wrong about: Highway driving miles doesn’t wear down your oil like city driving does. I never thought of that. I learned something new today, thanks!
I drive my van 99% highway miles. Techs always put 3K oil intervals on the window sticker and I blow right past and take it to 6-7K. 1.5 years and I put 93K miles on it already and it still drives like new because apart from first 11K miles, everything else is highway miles.
@@SergePupko If you're using synthetic, the 3000 miles is a joke, but if you're using conventional (which I don't know who would these days--unless you have a really old car, like a pre 90's car maybe) then I'd say 5,000 miles is the max.
Scotty I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I truly enjoy how you explain, honestly, on how not to get ripped off. You’re very helpful showing how to spend money wisely. Thanks for your input
Scotty, the oil only being good for one year might be a myth as well, projectfarm did a test of old oil recently and the lab results showed the oil was still good.
the main issue is the oil filter. in most cases if your gonna spend the time replacing the oil filter you might as well replace the oil. but its true deoending on driving conditions oil can last a long time but still some additives for resisting wear and detergents that keep contaminants suspended in the oil so that the filter can filter them out can also get affected, but the biggest thing is the oil filter while most modern oil filters are good, but they have a limit on how much they can trap and hold then when it gets too much and causes a blockage the filters are built with a bypass for when the inlet pressure is too great and thus your oil is no longer getting filtered. so you can essentially run extended oil drain intervals but replacing the filter and just topping off is a must if you do this. but i would say i would never go over 15-20k without changing my oil.
@MegaStick93 until the friction modifiers wear out, or the TBN hits 0. Then the oil becomes acidic. Most full synthetic oil run out of base additives at ~10k miles. You can't use the same oil forever no matter how good the filter is.
I wish my DeWalt 80 Amp starter / charger with alternator checker had the circuit in it to analyze the battery cells. Saved me from 5 dead battery occasions, so it definitely paid for itself. And I’ve only watched Scotty for the last 3 or so months, but I get smiles, laughs, and good advice EVERY time. Love the guy!
As a kid in the early 80s, my family had a 76 Country Squire and whenever we'd go up the slightest incline on the highway my dad would turn off the A/C or else the engine would overheat. Around town - forget it. Rolled down the windows. Later in the 90's in college, I had an 82 Accord. Turn on the A/C and horsepower would drop by half. I only used it going downhill to help slow down the car. No need to downshift, just turn on the A/C - save your brakes.
“Lifetime transmission fluid”. Means it’s guaranteed to last the lifetime of the transmission fluid, and when your transmission breaks? That’s how you know the lifetime of your fluid is up. That’ll be $6000 please. 😂😂😂😂😂
Me being 48 years old and owned many many cars , used of course, I learnt much by the breaking downs, un normal sounds, burnt smells ECT.... Man you're awesome, I have study this for years and still people refuse to believe me about all of those things; mostly because they think "I want to make them spend money", which is completely the opposite...
About cellphones at gas stations. This was tested on Mythbusters and they proved you absolutely right. The problem was people starting to pump gas, getting back in the car during or while using a phone, then getting out again when pump shuts off, it was the static caused by getting in and out of the car that created a spark.
I have a buddy who fills his pickup while it runs all the time. He's crazy.. and it is obvious because he has a lift kit that has it sitting at monster truck heights. LOL
Got several old chargers, 68-72 models bought them when they were cheap (late 70's) all I've ever done is changed filter and added 1qt of oil, zero engine issues!
Been watching your videos for about 2 or 3 years now, and I have learned a lot from them. I now work on all of my own stuff and have completely cut out dealerships and shops.
Amusing fact: You had a dog on-screen as you made the "wawawawan" sound of a cranking-but-not-starting engine. In Japanese, the onomotopoeia for a barking dog is 「わんわん」("wan wan" for two barks in this case).

Great comments Scotty...at 73, I remember all the myths you enumerated. Keep up the great work you do...til next time.
Good to see Scotty is back up to his normal “speed” and “performance”!!!
wait why.... did he get sick or something?
He finally went in for his manufacture recommended maintenance and got his radiator flushed.
horsepower and torque 😉
@@rickjames5998 yeah, it's was obvious if you see the videos for the last 1-2 months. His horsepower was a bit low! ;-)
No one:
Scotty Kilmer: When I was a young mechanic...
Fred Flinstone gad his feet relined.....
I wonder what he's like after another pot of coffee. Lmao!
Scotty snorts cocaine
Well if he snorts it. I has not affected his brain??!!
I wouldn't want Scotty any other way, he is such a great guy👍
It's not coffee. But I approve of the speed. I don't like the bad humor though.
Hmm I was wondering what he's like after another Rum and Coke.
This man says what all us real mechanics that have experienced all kinds a craziness of being a mechanic want to tell everyone. Lol. Kudos to you Scotty
Scotty Kilmer, a walking encyclopedia of car knowledge!🇺🇸
Jim legacy nah he just googles a bunch of random crap before he makes a video
Buddy, the "live free or die" sign took me out 🤣 love it
Don't tread on him
If 90% of engine wear happens at Startup, imagine how long engines would last if they designed them to circulate oil when you turned the key first before the engine started.
EW: There are systems called "Pre-oilers" that circulate the oil prior to start. In the past they were used on some large aircraft radial engines. Some large industrial equipment may have them.
I think a lot of oil pumps run off the serpentine belt, so you'd need a secondary pump. Some modern cars probably do this, but I don't know of any. :)
I say no!!!
@@ALittleBitOfGay I think they run off the crankshaft. That way if, once the engine starts turning, the engine starts pumping.
Don't fill to the top new vehicles!!! The overflow will go down into a sensor! $$$$
@@leefury7 I know, that's why I mentioned that it was a 1968 before cars had computers or Cats or evaporation systems.
😔 I was wrong about:
Highway driving miles doesn’t wear down your oil like city driving does.
@@SergePupko What is it with the US + 3k oil intervals? 10k is completely normal here.
@@SergePupko If you're using synthetic, the 3000 miles is a joke, but if you're using conventional (which I don't know who would these days--unless you have a really old car, like a pre 90's car maybe) then I'd say 5,000 miles is the max.
Hahahaha "I'd strangle you" hahaha the dark side of scotty
Luis Vasquez I love how the tone in his voice changed as well
Yeah I had to re-watch that one a few times! Can imagine the look on that engineer's face!
Better start checking the shallow graves in that area.
@@tarquineous It wouldn't be any finger prints because he always wears them little blue gloves.
I played that part back a second time also. Funny.
Scotty I'm not a mechanic. But I've always been a car guy. I can listen to you all night.
Keep these video's coming.
Scotty I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I truly enjoy how you explain, honestly, on how not to get ripped off. You’re very helpful showing how to spend money wisely. Thanks for your input
I agree. There is financial basics involved here also. He tells us how to not give away our hard earned money.
I never miss ur show .
Not much of a do-it-urselfer
but knowledge is power. Thanks
I'm a starting mechanic and everything you've said, I've heard 😂. You're the best Scotty!
I just awarded myself an honorary mechanics certification from having watched so many of his vids. lol kidding, but I do know a lot more now.
MythBusters: Scotty edition!
I literally don’t go a day without watching a Scotty video!
Me: “I’ve got lifetime transmission fluid”
Scotty: “Change it”
Me: “I’ve got 266kmi on it”
Scotty: “Don’t touch it, the transmission will start slipping if you change it.”
....And a microphone
@@eriklehnsherr5784 Two turntables and a microphone,...
Truth.
:-D
If you got 266k miles on it it's been changed or it would be dead and if it's working fine it's ok to change it.
Great info. Not a car afficiaionotto, but am becoming one since discovering your videos. Thanks Scotty!!!
Scotty, the oil only being good for one year might be a myth as well, projectfarm did a test of old oil recently and the lab results showed the oil was still good.
Projectfarm is a great channel. I have learned a lot from him and Scotty.
I haven't observed any store clerks removing old oil from the shelves. If you could clean the oil you could reuse it for a long long time.
Right but when the oil is exposed to the elements that's a different story. Moisture, heat and oxygen blah blah LoL
the main issue is the oil filter. in most cases if your gonna spend the time replacing the oil filter you might as well replace the oil. but its true deoending on driving conditions oil can last a long time but still some additives for resisting wear and detergents that keep contaminants suspended in the oil so that the filter can filter them out can also get affected, but the biggest thing is the oil filter while most modern oil filters are good, but they have a limit on how much they can trap and hold then when it gets too much and causes a blockage the filters are built with a bypass for when the inlet pressure is too great and thus your oil is no longer getting filtered. so you can essentially run extended oil drain intervals but replacing the filter and just topping off is a must if you do this. but i would say i would never go over 15-20k without changing my oil.
@MegaStick93 until the friction modifiers wear out, or the TBN hits 0. Then the oil becomes acidic. Most full synthetic oil run out of base additives at ~10k miles. You can't use the same oil forever no matter how good the filter is.
hooboi. Gotta love it when he starts with the "when I was a young mechanic" line
Yep... a lot has changed even this century.
Ok I'll pop up me me
If you tied his hands together he wouldn't be able to speak at all LOL
10+ years of UA-cam and a dang battery checker is what compelled me to leave my first comment ever... ridiculous? I think not! Lol
That's how these joker's sell you transmissions, absolutely scandalous.
Hey Scotty, ever think of conducting an orchestra as a side gig? Love ya man!
Me being 48 years old and owned many many cars , used of course, I learnt much by the breaking downs, un normal sounds, burnt smells ECT.... I did learn a few things and glad to know bout the myths that I did before and was going to still do with these modern cars . I want to give this man Scotty props on his knowledge and kindness for sharing his knowledge GOD bless and thank you. Stay humble and keep going

“Gasoline expands and you have more gas” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@j_freed If they meter by volume, you are correct. If they meter by mass (which I doubt), Scotty is correct. Is it significant, I don't know.
Which weighs more? A pound of gas at -25° or a pound of gas at 90°. LOL We calculated weight, not gallons when filling aircraft in Alaska.
@@leefury7 A pound of feathers.

Me too, I hope I’m like that at his age!
About cellphones at gas stations. This was tested on Mythbusters and they proved you absolutely right. The problem was people starting to pump gas, getting back in the car during or while using a phone, then getting out again when pump shuts off, it was the static caused by getting in and out of the car that created a spark.
"Shut the car off before you put the gas pump in".
Great video Scotty, on costly myths.

I have a buddy who fills his pickup while it runs all the time. He's crazy.. and it is obvious because he has a lift kit that has it sitting at monster truck heights. LOL
It's idiots that get in and out of their vehicles which cause static....also don't remove any clothing as that will cause it to blow up lol

Amusing fact: You had a dog on-screen as you made the "wawawawan" sound of a cranking-but-not-starting engine. In Japanese, the onomotopoeia for a barking dog is 「わんわん」("wan wan" for two barks in this case).
