dwoodog Not on the lugs or studs (never put anything on the lugs or studs) but I have seen people put it on the hub where the rim contacts the hub. The reason some people do this is because dissimilar metals bond together through rust. I never really had that problem on my vehicles so I never had to... So on the lugs or studs, no, but on the hub, maybe.
ChrisFix Everywhere I have read, they say to NEVER put any kind of lubricant or anti-seize on the studs or nuts for fear that they will work loose. However, I always put some on the center hub to keep the wheel from seizing onto the hub.
Thomas Perry Exactly! You should never put anything on the studs or lugs. I misread his comment. I thought he said around the studs (where the rim meets the hub).
This makes me appreciate the ramp my father made from a couple of I beams. Changing tires at chest level is a lot easier than at ground level. Also makes it easy and safe to get under the cars. Although I did bruise one of my nails when removing a tire (7:45 is quite important) it was quite easy... Aside from loosening all of the bolts on my tires because those car mechanic bastards used impact guns to tighten them (I had to stand on my breaker bar and jump on it just to break one of the bolts). Thank you very much ChrisFix! Keep the videos coming and I'll keep learning!
changing a tire seems like a simple thing but it's so daunting for someone who has never done it before! thank you for the video, this was so helpful and you explain things amazingly
Xingyu Luo You can lift all four tires off the ground, but you need to be sure you balance the car on the jack stands so it is very stable. Keep the jack stands the furthest from the center as possible (so keep it on the sides if possible). It is similar to what you saw in this video plus lifting the rear. Again, make sure the car is stable before going under.

Hey man, great video! Just a tip.. when torquing, push down the wrench instead of pulling up. You could injure yourself by lifting with your back. Plus, pushing down uses less energy because you're only using your weight and hardly any muscles.

Your videos help me so much dude! Father wasn’t in my life to show me anything about cars etc. I’m in my twenties just learning, thanks to you! Much appreciated
I blew out my tire from hitting a big pot hole not to long ago and once I get the right tools, I’m learning how to change a tire properly. Luckily I had a spare and jack that came with my car when I bought it and a stranger saw me stranded and helped me change it. It turned out he was one of my uncle’s friends!
After your torque your wheels in a star pattern. What I like to do is what’s called “around the horn” where you go in a circle. Starting at the top. Sometimes on 6 lug wheels you’ll miss one. It helps me for sure
The torque can vary a lot between vehicles. I've seen as low as 75 ft/lbs on some Subaru and 170 on old f350s. Most cars actually call for around 80 ft/lbs.
Thank you for such comprehensive and detailed videos. I appreciate the time, effort, and hard work to create self-help videos like this which helps thousands of people like myself. Thanks again Chris.
10:00 you can clearly hear that it was dubbed over 😂 I recently watched the podcast you did with the investing guy and I learned just how much you're focused on the best production possible. It's weird to see "sub-optimal" dubs from old old videos
As others have mention your a good teacher thanks after many year I’m learning the proper way to jack the vehicle and torque my wheel all these year I always over torque my wheel Even now at 100 pounds I feel my wheel are not rite but I’m trying lol even at 75 I’m still learning thanks CHRIS I WACH YOUR CHANNEL ALL THE TIME EVEN THE CLEANING JOB YOU DID THAT WAS A GREAT ONE ALSO but I’m trying to feel safe
Thanks for the video. Having learned how to maintain my car the hard way, I appreciate someone taking the time to patiently explain auto maintenance to the public.
Good video but I have few tips for road side spare replacement. Road sides don't always have hard flat surfaces and can be stone dirt or little of both. I have rubber wheel blocks that stay under the wheel better on loose ground and a 1/4 plate I use under the factory scissor jask to help support it over loose ground. 2×6 board would work too but my crack. Adding bolts to the steel plate or screw to the wood can help stake it to the loose ground as well as keep the jack center of the plate or board. FYI I live in PENNSYLVANIA and unfortunately know a thing or two about putting the spare wheel on and having a jack sink into the dirt isn't fun.😒 Hope that helps I'll be watching for your future videos👍
Thank you Chris for such high quality videos......clear, concise, accurate, and to the point. I also appreciate the tool buying tips. I recently jumped a curb with my 2008 Mazda3; no visible damage, handling at high speeds is still perfect, but when I turn the steering wheel going slow I hear a rubbing and clicking sound. The dealer charged my $55.00 to tell me that there is no visible damage, but it does make a noise....then it was they think it may be a bearing (top of shock location)....they then suggested (as there is 145,000 miles on the car) to change out both shocks and then realign the front end....$$$$...then I watched your change a strut video on your 2006 Mazda3, so I think that I'm gonna go for it by doing the work myself!! All thanx to you and your videos....if you have any additional tips.....we'd all appreciate it....A big THANK YOU again!
One tip would be to make sure you put the wheel on the ground with the face up. I unthinkingly quickly put one face down and when I gave it a shove out the way it got scratch! :(
That's a wrong way. Tighten as much as you can with wheel off ground, then 3/4 tight with wheel just touching ground, then final fully tight with car's full weight on the wheel
ChrisFix in 2014: Some vehicles only have 4 lug nuts, I’d say 5 is the most common and some have 6... ChrisFix in 2019: Buys a Hummer with 8 lug nuts!🤣 Congrats dude👍💪
I just learnt this on UA-cam at the age of 39 - one day before my fortieth birthday. If I had got to 40 without it I'd feel like a complete failure. Of course my dad didn't teach me this, his parenting was worse than not having a parent at all. But thank God and UA-cam there are now solutions.
From my experience, the easiest way to break the bead is to run it over with a truck after removing the valve core. To reset the bead, push it over on the back side so it is tight, then put an unmounted tire under the one you are trying to mount, so that the rim lays due to gravity and puts even pressure on the other side of the bead. Fill it with air, wait for the bead to pop on both sides. That's how I've done it.
@@gamecapturemoments1 That's about what I do. But I don't directly run the tyre over, I put a plank of wood like a ramp up to the tyre and drive up it. More control over where the force is placed.
I just got my first car yesterday, its a bit of a bomb. I know nothing about cars, but just by watching a few of your videos ive learnt so much. Enough where i now i can fix so much of it myself with out mechanics. Thank man!!
You and I change tires very different. When you use the tire iron and a breaker bar ( 4 way) I just put a piece of pipe over the 4 way. And when you titan the lug nuts with a 4 way I use a impact. And I do it my self and I am not a mechanic
Haha since I work at a mechanics shop and my dad is a mechanic, I get to work on all my stuff there 😂 and yea the impact usually tightens the wheel pretty tight, I’ve learned and my dad showed me a sweetspot for the common torque tightness so the impact usually doesn’t go too loose or too tight but it’s pretty accurate, usually like a 1/4-1/2 a turn till each nut is torqued properly
@@MK-ex4pb I take tyres on and off, eg to change the TPMS valves when they stop working. I don't use a machine, just tyre levers, it's not as hard as you say. It would take me longer to drive to a workshop and wait around for them. I get new tyres from a workshop because they need balancing, but then I take just the wheels because they do the lug nuts too tight.
chris...i have a flat tire...I bought a used 1995 honda civic that didn't come with a tire iron and it has cutom tires. nothing I do can even begin latching onto the lugnuts...so i have a car in my driveway without anyway of being able to take the tire off and getting it patched...the tire will not hold any air at all...please help man.
I know this is late and I'm sure you've solved this problem already, but this is in case someone else reads it in the future and has the same question. The answer is that you have aftermarket lug nuts. Aftermarket lug nuts have their own unique sizes, that's why when you buy aftermarket lug nuts for aftermarket or custom wheels, they come with their own unique socket to loosening and tightening them.
Step 1. Jack the car up so the tire is off the ground. Step 2. Use a impact wrench to take off the wheel while the tire is off the ground. Step 3. Use impact wrench to put lugs back on so they are only snug. Step 4. Low the car back to the ground and use torque wrench to tighten to spec.

Your videos help me so much dude! Father wasn’t in my life to show me anything about cars etc. I’m in my twenties just learning, thanks to you! Much appreciated
Next up: You will be required to rebuild an entire Chevy engine, including degreeing in the cam for better bottom end performance.
You also want to put on the lug nuts in a star pattern
I’m here bcs I’m homeschooled and dont do the life lessons class so i do it on my own and this helped me a lot thx
I'm glad the video helped you out! Thanks a lot!
@@chrisfix are you actually commenting on this old video?? Thats a real youtuber who even helps people on 5 year old comment section!

That’s definitely not a class in public school.
Bucky Sanders rlly?
13:00 Chris, I done this, but my lug nuts don't turn red as yours :(
+Soniboy84 lol
You make amazing how-to videos!
Thanks for the tip for putting it back on. Big Help! Have yourself a nice weekend!
I roll the tire up on my knee on bigger tires. you have to do it kinda fast but better than lifting it
Jason Caldwell Good Tip! Kinda like rolling it on your foot sitting down!
The torque can vary a lot between vehicles. I've seen as low as 75 ft/lbs on some Subaru and 170 on old f350s. Most cars actually call for around 80 ft/lbs.
+Hunter Coyhis thanks for sharing Hunter
"Another thing you can't jack up on"
I see what you did there 😏
This was surely the best video on changing a tire! thank you!
Please Chris fix please pray for me please I am so sad please God bless you and your family always 🙏🏼
Thank you for such comprehensive and detailed videos. I appreciate the time, effort, and hard work to create self-help videos like this which helps thousands of people like myself. Thanks again Chris.
+Rinaldo Policicchio No problem! I am glad you are learning a lot!
Thanks so much! Now I know how to take off tires off of my boyfriend's car when he has me f***ed up
10:40 my girlfriend when i finish in 3 minutes
10:00 you can clearly hear that it was dubbed over 😂
I recently watched the podcast you did with the investing guy and I learned just how much you're focused on the best production possible. It's weird to see "sub-optimal" dubs from old old videos
As others have mention your a good teacher thanks after many year I’m learning the proper way to jack the vehicle and torque my wheel all these year I always over torque my wheel
Even now at 100 pounds I feel my wheel are not rite but I’m trying lol even at 75 I’m still learning thanks CHRIS I WACH YOUR CHANNEL ALL THE TIME EVEN THE CLEANING JOB YOU DID THAT WAS A GREAT ONE ALSO
but I’m trying to feel safe
Thanks for the video. Having learned how to maintain my car the hard way, I appreciate someone taking the time to patiently explain auto maintenance to the public.
Can you show how to jack all wheels off the ground simultaneously? Any thing we have to be aware of?
that Tourqe Wrench sound is so satisfying
You can also jack the car on the side point and change one tire, then the same for the other side.
I've changed a tire a dozen times. Still wanted to watch this lol
I bet you never changed a tire in your life.
I’m here because I apply for a job at Gerald’s tires & brakes but I don’t kno shi bout cars
Bro fuckin same
lmao i feel bad for who’s ever car comes across you
Perfect video, I was skeptical about doing the tire change on my own, but u made it so simple thanks chrisfix!
FYI I live in PENNSYLVANIA and unfortunately know a thing or two about putting the spare wheel on and having a jack sink into the dirt isn't fun.😒
Hope that helps
I'll be watching for your future videos👍
This video helped me 4 years after it was uploaded :) good video
MrTrustafox Oh rim side up it’s not a must but it’s more to keep everything looking good. Not a bad tip
If u have a friend with you, he/she can push the breaks on the car and u can tighten the bolts with ease.
Good idea! Thanks!
You're damn fast to respond to comments Chris, keep up the good work! :)
there might be a chance that the car could fall off the jack stands cuz ur putting alot of pressure on the car when it's in the air. I'm not sure tho.
ChrisFix in 2019: Buys a Hummer with 8 lug nuts!🤣
Congrats dude👍💪
I just learnt this on UA-cam at the age of 39 - one day before my fortieth birthday. If I had got to 40 without it I'd feel like a complete failure. Of course my dad didn't teach me this, his parenting was worse than not having a parent at all. But thank God and UA-cam there are now solutions.
Sorry to hear about your father doing that. I'm glad you learned how to do this! Happy Birthday!
Was really hoping this would be a demount/mounting a tire video. Future video?!?!?!
Yea I want to do a video on that! It’s hard to do at home
Thank man!!
I'm glad the videos are helpful!
@@chrisfix and Plus With This Video Is Great Because Both Of The Wheels Are Off So Now I Know How To Put The Tires Back On!!!
MY GOD!! This video was so packed with great, informative info and so well presented.
Chris, one HELL OF A JOB SIR!!!
Thanks a lot!
hey chris, do you have a video on changing tires off and on the wheel? cheers.
That would be interesting!
You need a machine for that or a lot of time and effort. It's easier to just pay$10 to a shop. Nobody really changes their own tires
11:39 This video is very dirty. :P
Yes. Oil and petrol can be very dirty.
Me sound smart.
yes like my dadys 2005 saleen
Lol
Read this comment as he said it and I thought the same. Lol.
Thanks boss. Was sitting down and realized I knew how a tire is changed, but not how to change a tire
Who's watching during corona virus pandemic?
chris...i have a flat tire...I bought a used 1995 honda civic that didn't come with a tire iron and it has cutom tires. nothing I do can even begin latching onto the lugnuts...so i have a car in my driveway without anyway of being able to take the tire off and getting it patched...the tire will not hold any air at all...please help man.
Joystick James did you figure it out yet
I know this is late and I'm sure you've solved this problem already, but this is in case someone else reads it in the future and has the same question. The answer is that you have aftermarket lug nuts. Aftermarket lug nuts have their own unique sizes, that's why when you buy aftermarket lug nuts for aftermarket or custom wheels, they come with their own unique socket to loosening and tightening them.
@@jayrivers8478 If you can figure out what lug nuts they are, you can find the proper socket, or you purchase nut extractors and the proper lug nuts.
"Use your shoes"
Me with ma Jordans: hell nooo
Why are you wearing Jordans while working on your car?
@@jayit6851 lol think about it, on my way to School i got a flat tire....
I feel like I could start my own car repair business just by watching this channel...
I walked out to a rear drivers side flat tyre a few days ago. I may tackle it tonight or tomorrow. Need new rear tyres anyway.
Anyone here in 2024?
yeah
Me
Yeah buddy
I don't have an impact wrench. I don't find any problem using a hand wrench.
I just changed my tire for the time today
Awesome and nice work!!!!
ChrisFix cheers man for the videos
I change tires everyday in a tire shop. Try doing a dually from Canada with rusted on everything. Canadians never take care of their vehicles.
