Love Never Forgets: An Alzheimer's Love Story

Verna and Jerry Kinersly have been happily married for 66 years and Jerry is quick to give credit where credit is due. "She asked me out for the first date," he reflected. "Oh man, my heart went pitty-pat".
Since their wedding on Valentine's Day, 1953, Verna and Jerry built a wonderful, loving life together, filled with 4 kids, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. A few years ago Verna's primary care physician noticed that her periodic memory lapses were getting progressively worse and diagnosed her with mild Alzheimer's.
Becoming residents of Las Vegas turned out to be a lucky roll of the dice for this loving couple. Thankfully, not far from their home, they found a nonprofit called "Keep Memory Alive" at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. This organization helps those living with Alzheimer's navigate the extraordinary challenges of the disease.
The beautiful Frank Gehry design of the center is warm and welcoming, inside and out, and it's a unique model of integrated care and research that is leading the effort to treat all aspects of brain health. Jerry raves about the level of care Verna receives and how the facilities are beautiful and inviting. "This is one of the primary buildings in Las Vegas that people talk about."
When Verna was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, it became difficult for the couple to reflect on the cherished memories they share. Nevertheless, with the help of the "Keep Memory Alive Foundation", Jerry knows the love of his life is getting the best care possible.
As her primary caregiver, Jerry takes things one day at a time, their connection ever present. "She'd like it if somehow or another, this wonderful place here would come up with a cure."
