Painting watercolour backgrounds intuitively

  • In this video, I do several watercolour paintings where I demonstrate how I use colour craving exercises and paint multiple paintings at a time. I love cleaning my brush onto a new blank piece of watercolour paper, or on another existing work in progress. Once I let my watercolour backgrounds dry, I add mixed media supplies over the top.
I am using several different brands of watercolour paper - Artist Loft 4x6" 140 lb watercolour pad, Strathmore and Canson XL 140 lb paper, and Arches Cold Press paper on a block (8"sw).
    Watercolours I love:
    theoceanpaper.com/
    stonegroundpaint.com/
    www.amazon.ca/Kuretake-Gansai...
    danielsmith.com/
I use a round watercolour brush - both size 10 and 12 (quite large).

Thank you so much for your videos and your encouragement. Before you all of my abstract watercolor paintings would come out muddy. I would never think about the colors. Watching you has given me the ability to understand the value of simplicity and taking my time and now Im creating beautiful watercolor art.

There’s something so mesmerizing watching all these big puddles of transparency and color flow into each other. You always crave the most unique and interesting color stories. I like how you balance the saturated neons with the muted colors.

I absolutely love your way of intuitive watercolor painting ❤. It’s calming and fulfilling . I’m not an artist and can’t draw but by just mixing colors my heart is happy . I love watercolors . I can then go later after the paint has dried and add to the painting if I feel it needs it .

I love that, color craving! I often experience the extreme need to paint nothing in particular but I’m craving color, seeing color on bright white paper! I think I’ll keep a sketchbook just for that purpose, I’ll entitle it color craving! Thank You! ❤

I just discovered your youtube chanel and I absaloutely love listening to you explaining what you are doing. And you talk about color craving which I never heard anyone talk about. Thats how I paint, I do not have anything special in mind when I start but as I have my colors in front of me I get an instant craving for some color. Happy to have a name for that feeling now.

thanks for your comments. I first heard artist , Flora Bowley, an intuitive artist (Portland), using the term "colour craving", and I learned her tips and tricks, and some of her exercises with acrylic paint... I took a wonderful course called "Fresh Paint", and it was in that course where I'd learned how to choose colours more intuitively. "craving" is the word that seems to make the most sense in this scenario. That's cool that you are already doing this.

I tape it to a flat surface (or the paper block) with artist tape, saturate it with water and let it dry. Keep it taped while I paint. Prevents the warping. If in a hurry, the use of an hairdryer on the back of warped paper while paint is still damp might happen, with various results 😅
