Unedited videos and sharing of inspiration on how to create visual reminders to stay present in the moment and appreciate the beauty that holds the power of connection and evoking change. I believe that everyone is creative and it was not that long ago that I first picked up a paintbrush. I quickly fell in love with the practice and it's become my daily passion that has moved me into a full-time working artist. I have a focus on watercolour, acrylic and mixed media painting.
How I mount my watercolour paper to wood panel (no talking).
In this unedited, super short video, I demonstrate how I mount, or also known as, "glue" with matte medium, my watercolour paper art to wood panel. I love this process as it takes 15 minutes or less and is one small thing I can do for my art process during a busy day.
After mounting your art -remember to flatten your art with books, facedown, on a clean, dry and flat surface. 24 hours is ideal.
Once dry, you can use an craft knife to trim around the edges. I finish my art with a wax medium such as Dorland's Wax.
Materials used:
Painting on 140 lb watercolour paper
Cradled Wood panel (11 x14", 1.5" deep), edges were pre-painted.

Parchment Paper (any paper will do that is clean and protective)

I'm ready to invest in more expensive, sheer watercolors...either tubes or palettes. Which brand do you recommend?
It really depends on your budget and what type of watercolour properties you have enjoyed so far... lots of variables. I personally like Beam paints, and the Stoneground Paint Co. I'm biased as they are Canadian (Beam is all non toxic, and plastic free, family run, indigenous owned/woman owned). Stoneground has beautiful effects... They both have excellent customer service. I would recommend checking out brands that have reviews on youtube... Again, this is just my opinion based on my own experience and limited professional watercolour experience.
Hi Aliison. Why and how do you decide if a watercolor painting needs a touch up w/ acrylic?
Through my experience of painting daily and putting in a ton of hours and time in finding my "art styles"... I just "know" when and how to finisih them. Almost like a puzzle ... I know what piece is missing when it comes to how I want my art to look and feel. Is that what you mean? Or are you referring to art prints that I am considering "embellishing"? thanks Libby!
Merci😊
Thank you so much!
Thank you for telling the story of Maud Lewis. I paused your video to watch it and then came back. It made me cry, bc I complain of an intentional tremor that prevents me from using my right hand and have learned to create using left hand. Anyhoo, Maud really inspired me! Please continue to get “side tracked” and tell your stories. 💕
Thank you so much for sharing. Means a lot to me. Maud was so resilient and inspiring.
Ty... asmr appreciated, same for supplies list in description box... after my dolphin challenge, foxes and fish are next... not exactly cows or mountains, but your joy had me looking at who/what sparks mine...as terrestrial as ii appear to be, the extremes of space & oceanographics bookend my soul... hugs.
Thank you so much for the kind words and the hugs! I needed this today!! You write poetically.
Of course I’d buy some stickers. I love them❣️. And I’d love to have some of yours. I’ve admired your work for a long time. Is the tariff situation going to affect small businesses❓❓❓. I’d asked another Canadian company I buy from (stickers❗️) and I also buy Beam Paints. I’d hate for it to affect you. I’m so ashamed ( and scared and angry at what’s going on here‼️. U. S. A). I think the other countries realize we’ve got a bunch of power hungry nutz trying to ruin the country. Enough of that❣️❣️
Thanks for watching and checking in. The situation with tariffs will not affect my business from what I have learned so far.
Love this what a great gift indeed. Keep being awesome friend. Happy painting!!!❤
Thank you for watching and happy painting to you too!
Wonderful demo and thank you for sharing - such great tips! I'd love to see the look on your mom's face when she sees it!
Thanks for the support, Debbie!
Allison, your mum will be very pleased with this great gift.😊
Thank you so much.

Loved seeing all of your works. I can't wait to see how you finish your fox piece - I know your mom is going to love it!! Thanks for posting another wonderful video - a delight for all of us!
Thanks Debbie for all of your support ! I've been working on my "Little Fox with a Big Tale"... stay tuned (I will update my blog on my website too!)
Oh Yes! Put some stickers for sale in your shop. I love art work produced as stickers to add to personal writing journal pages.. I do love your art💕.
Thanks so much! I will add some stickers to my website.
Love and watch each video, but completely understand taking breaks. Your daily practice and painting multiples has always inspired me. I also began painting the backgrounds of watercolors and then going back to them like you. Oh, do you spray all your watercolors w/ Spectra Fix even if framing under glass. I do spray anything with oil pastels which I just revisited.
Thanks Libby. I only tend to spray with Spectrafix if I plan to finish the work with wax. Sometimes it can leave a slight sheen of spray in certain areas if the work isn't highly textured or colourful. For example- I'm careful when I use spectrafix over a work with a lot of white/blank space.
I also love plays on words! And all of your videos. And all of your beautiful art. You are an inspiration. Every time! 💗
Thanks so much Cathy!
Allison, you videos are always filled with beautiful art, tips, references. Yes, get some rest and hurry back!! Thank you
Thank you for watching and for your kind words!
Oh Allison- absolutely love your beautiful work, your inspiring videos, your sparkling personality. Please rest of course but please know we wait with bated breath to see your videos! Thank you for all you do - I am so grateful!💕🎨
Thanks so much! I really appreciate you saying that.
I loved getting to see more of your work! You’re so talented and I can tell that you paint from your heart. ❤🎨
Thanks so much! I appreciate you saying that.
How deep are your wood panels 2”? 1”? Thank you for all the tips 😂
I like the 2” wide ones but I use both. Thanks Pamela
Such a Fun video!! Thank you!!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've used hibiscus tea to paint. Unfortnately, it is very fugative. My images were gone in a month.
I suppose that is where having good photos of your work would come in handy if you wanted to hold onto the art images... Thanks for sharing.
On your Otter print, the varnish finish looks so glossy, can you remember what varnish you used for that? it certainly doesn't look like Dorlands, thank again!
I only use Dorland's on original watercolour artworks (primarily). This Otter is a 100% cotton rag print, and I used Liquetex gloss varnish.
Putting high quality prints to a cradled panel is an excellent idea. Did you manage to wax or varnish the paper used for the prints? Thank you.
Yes, it can be tedious, but once you get a system in place- (like the right varnish)- it is a neat way to finish a print! I use Liquetex varnish.
Allison, watching your videos truly inspires me to go and create at that moment and without hesitation or judgement, just with intuition and joy 🥹 thank you for all the work you do both here and on Instagram 🧡
Also I want to add, I have finally found my style in watercolor after watching one of your intuitive painting videos. And I opened a shop on Etsy and hopefully will start listing my art prints soon! This was my childhood dream it really means the world to me. You may not know how much you helped me but every time I need a kick to continue my passion, I remember your perspective on art and it gives me that boost. 🌸
You are so welcome! Thanks for the lovely encouragement.
Congratulations!! That is super exciting. Such wonderful news to hear!
This is exactly what I needed as far as understanding the process. Thanks!
So glad you found it helpful!
Your videos are so rich. It is always a gift for me. Merci 😊
I am so happy you are enjoying them! Thank you for watching.
Love love love this video, Allison!!! So many wonderful ideas, demos, and resources!! So very grateful for your amazing work!❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching - I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
Hello Allison I might be the person you're referring to when you say this print is going to the US! 🙂I recently received it, got it framed up, hung it, and have been reaping the compliments ever since! So many layers, such harmony of colors, complex yet reflecting the most simple and serene landscape. Also received your poetry cards which I use for meditation and inspiration. Thank you so much!
Oh wow! So happy to hear you're enjoying the print and cards. thanks for your support on here and my website! xx
Really appreciate your efforts in sharing your art techniques and tips with us Allison. Love that first piece and the reticulated patterns. So glad you like Marabeth's botanical layers course. Next-her landscapes...right?
Yes, I'm thinking landscapes or book binding... but any of them are fantastic!
And hello Cindi!! Great to see you on here too!
Every stroke you made is poetry- so very artful! So inspiring!
Thanks so much - I’m so happy you enjoyed it!
The Crow. I love the dreamy quality❣️❣️ and I follow Marybeth too. I need to go back & look at her older videos‼️‼️
She has several fabulous courses available on her website. Have fun!
Oh Allison- a beautiful landscape! So sweet with your poetic son at such a tender age! To contemplate the universe, infinity, and his love for you is just intensely heart-felt! Thank you for sharing that!
Thanks so much for watching, I'm so glad you loved it!
ua-cam.com/video/MhZOD8qzQHc/v-deo.htmlsi=uGVUBwPc_JL2DgmW The above video immediately made me think of you speaking on mind mapping. I thought you might find this helpful.
Thanks for watching Pamela!
Lovely! I've used this technique for several years and I've found that both sides of photo paper for your printer work quite well. Best, it's inexpensive when purchased at a thrift store and it comes in many sizes.
Thankyou for sharing your experience, Chris. I will have to try that.
I watched "My Octopus Teacher" sometime ago. It's just a beautiful "friendship". Also watching "My Best Friend is an Animal" on National Geographic channel. My husband and I are total animal lovers!
Thankyou for sharing! I will check out "My Best Friend is an Animal". Sounds right up our alley!
I so wish we could return to handwriting and talking with people. Texts are just so impersonal. And so many people complain about feeling disconnected/lonely. Maybe we need to get away from so much technology periodically. Love this video and I love your sharing your work with us!!
Yes, I couldn't agree more! Thanks again for your support.
Thank you so much for sharing the reticulated technique you use! I have playing been with the idea since I watched your video a few days ago. You are inspiring! I love your videos.
Thank you so much for watching and encouraging me!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful artwork and this technique. I will definitely be experimenting with this. I dont think I have any type of paper like this so will have to have a look to see what else I can use and how it works. Very inspiring Allison 😊
Your blog is beautiful! I just signed up. The blog format is so much better than Insta. You can barely see the content on Insta these days due to the relentless ads. More blog, please!
I agree! I’m so happy you signed up. I'm working on adding to the blog between videos. Thank you so much!
@@allisondawrant Vids come first! Please don't neglect the vids! The blog is a great adjunct.
Marabeth is the best. That's beautiful Allison
You got that right! Thanks Peggy
Name suggestion… Floral Flight
That is a great name, thanks for the suggestion!
That’s a great idea to start the first layer of collage work with watercolour. When I took the abstract landscape class with Marabeth everything was done with acrylics. Acrylics are great but I love the transparency of watercolour to go with the tissue papers. After seeing your beautiful work I’m tempted to take the botanical class. Thanks for inspiring me yet again. Merci
Yes, i love that watercolour effect too!
Love this video Allison! My dendrites were stimulated and synapses were firing off with all the purples! and of course the other colors. You shared so much! I really enjoyed how you had such fun and your responses to surprises was priceless...Love Marabeth Quin and Gaynor Pattle. They are like different flowers, both lovely and creative!!! Thank you for sharing with us all that you do.
Thanks so much - I have so much fun exploring these techniques with you!
I’m binging your videos. This is one I can definitely try 🎉 from bed with my little sketchbook and pallet. My problem is I always feel like I need to buy all the wonderful supplies online artists have. My hubby will divorce me if I don’t stop 😂. So glad you used an angle brush on this one. I have one and just yesterday was wondering how to use it in my play. 🎉
haha. funny about the art supply and hubby comment! I used to tell my husband "I had a date with Michael today"... as I would so often go to Michael's craft store when I started painting! Hopefully I help inspire you to use what you have... glad you have the angle brush!! It's so fun.
Hi, Allison. I’m brand new to your channel. I paint from bed due to chronic pain. It’s a bit messy 😂 but it helps me on the days I can do it. Your words at the end blessed my heart. I want so badly to be able to paint sitting up, but for now, God has me lying on my side. And I still can manage with watercolor pencils, markers, tiny watercolor pallets, etc in small sketchbooks. Anyway, enough. But thank you and I’m so happy to find your channel. ❤🙏
Oh, I can't imagine how hard that must be. Chronic pain is just all encompassing... Thank you for taking the time to write and encourage me. I hope you find much distraction and joy in creating "freely" due to your limitations. xx
Loving all of these cool patterns you create - a joy to watch, Thank YOU!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for all of your support Debbie!
Love seeing all your techniques and envy how much you accomplish in a day or two. I'm ready to spend and go into more expensive professional paints...been using mostly Kuertaki (?) and Korambi (sp?) since they have a gouache quality and don't get that transparency you get in your art poetry paintings. Would you recommend Bean paints or Ocean Paper as a starting place?
Hi Libby, I love Beam paints and they are a great investment with excellent properties and customer service. I will be using Rosa gallery, Ukrainian Watercolours soon. They have a good price point for quality, in my opinion. You may want to check out some reviews on here such as ua-cam.com/video/ILub-1KZZ-A/v-deo.html . There are wonderful reviews on Kuretake paints too....
Really enjoy your videos. I would love to see the process of how you created the piece you put on the cradle panel, from start to finish!
Thanks for watching.
