  • In this video I go out on my first ever wild camp. Having waited patiently for the bad weather to pass in May, I spotted a good weather window and took my opportunity to go out on a solo camp in the Peak District where I was treated to some lovely weather and a glorious sunrise.

    Hi Anthony - you did brilliant. It is a really odd feeling first wild camp, butterflies and as light fades the uncertainty rises. I felt totally invigorated by the experience, totally alive. Like you I did n't sleep much but it was more like been a kid on Christmas Eve type excitement more than anything else. When the dawn comes its always a sense of achievement to have made it safely though the night, but then that is the best bit with the sun rise and an early morning walk the best time of the day. I think you were really blessed by the weather and to have the stars and then the sunrise. Im so glad this has been a great experience for you and you won't be selling your new tent.

    Congratulations Anthony on your first wild camp,. Getting the first one done is always the hardest and the memory will stay with you forever. I’m
    Pleased you enjoyed it. You always learn more about yourself and what works for you each time you do one. Everyone is different, there’s no right or wrong., what works for someone won’t work for another person, just do you own thing.

    Hi Anthony, great video, I'm just getting into wild camping myself, got three under my belt so far this year. Went out onto Kinder back in April, imagination ran a little wild on me, convinced myself someone was walking about just outside the tent, hardly any sleep. As you will know experience breeds confidence, so by my third camp felt really at ease, it rained through the night, and strange as it may sound that seemed to help and I slept like a baby. I reckon you're safer up in the hills on your own than you are down in the city. Look forward to following your adventures. ATB Maurice.

    Well done !
    I've just come across your channel and have now subscribed.
    Seeing how many walks you have filmed, I'm surprised it has taken so long to do a wild camp.
    The secret to overcoming first-time fears is to be as tired as possible. My first solo I was so tired, I could barely be bothered to cook any dinner. In the good old days, folk would spend the day hiking before pitching up, so being tired was common. There could have been 10 bogeymen outside my tent, I couldn't care less ... I was asleep
    Now, it's quite common for folk to park the car and walk for only a couple of hours or even less, so getting tired isn't always possible, so if that's the case, walk in a few circles ... so you are near the car in case anything goes wrong, but are tired enough to sleep soundly.
    Regards from Whitley Bay

    • @AnthonyJohnson1
      @AnthonyJohnson1  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and subscribing Brian. I think you may be right there. I'm used to doing very long day walks, but i've only done relatively short 4 or 5 mile walks to camp so far. I've been a bit wary of the extra pack weight but its not been that bad, so I think i'll look to increase the mileage on future wild camps to help me sleep at night!

Tip, when you end up pitching on a slope, put a jacket or rucksack under the edge of your mat so you don't slip off or down the end, it just helps level you out, and obviously always make sure your head is up a slope not down. Well done! I haven’t quite got the nerve up to do my first wild camping yet so well done! I’ve been to the spot you camped on a couple of times - both in bad weather (the wind tears right through there sometimes) but you had perfect weather for the camp and an amazing sunrise. As you didn’t name the location in the video I won’t name it either, but did you park in the nearby car park (named after the famous hill) and if so was your car ok next day? I think leaving my car overnight is one of the things putting me off wild camping…

    • @AnthonyJohnson1
      @AnthonyJohnson1  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Kevin. I did leave my car in the car park you’re referring to. I was nervous about leaving it overnight there too as it’s a very remote location. My car was fine this morning. There was a motor home in the same car park who stayed in it overnight too as I noticed he was there when I parked up last night. A fellow UA-camr told me about it as he’s left his car there a couple of times with no issues. It might be a decent location for you to start if you’re looking to give camping a go.

      @kevinstark4294 3 роки тому +1

      @@AnthonyJohnson1 good to hear your car was safe Anthony. Being able to leave your car there overnight opens up a number of camping opportunities. Were you tempted to camp on the famous hill itself? The big problem with that is it’s just too visible and well known. Someone may see your light and lots of people go up there. But I bet it’d be a very atmospheric (possibly spooky) camp!
