  • Hi guys and gals, first of all, I want to thank all my subscribers for supporting my little channel, which is slowly gaining traction.
500 subs! WOW, thank you!! :)
To celebrate all the new subscribers, I decided to bite the bullet, pull up my "big girl pants," and attempt my very first WILD CAMP!!
To be honest, I wasn't nervous like I had been expecting to be. I'm not sure if it's because I am now so comfortable doing things as a Lone Wolf and being OK with being alone. Or maybe it was just that Wild Camping isn't really anything to fear, as long as you act sensibly, and keep your eyes and ears open to danger.
I decided to pick a very easy route a short drive from home, Stanton Moor on the edge of the Peak District, a stone's throw from Matlock. It's fairly low level and flat to walk with clear paths and not a huge area but a very popular and friendly spot. It's famous and well known for the 9 Ladies Stone Circle and the Cork Stone and is only a short hike to the Druids caves that featured in one of my previous Vlogs.
I had been collecting camping gear for a while and even had my tent purchased a whole year ago, on a whim during the sales in the hope I would get a chance to go. Alas, I did not.
With finances tight like everyone else's this year, I needed to hunt for more budget friendly sales and bargains or second hand kit to complete my set up and on Tuesday I was eagerly waiting for a shiny new back pack to arrive before I could set off!
The sun was out for the first time after what seemed like weeks of constant rain, and I was itching to get out there. Fortunately the camping/delivery Gods were smiling down on me and EVRI arrived with my delivery by midday, so I quickly packed all the kit I could cram in, didn't stop to check the bag fit comfortably and set off for the M1! Adding to the weight with a pitstop at ASDA for some foodie bits to keep me happy that night....forgetting to buy lightweight items!!
So here we go, my very first Wild Camp... Does the sun stay out for me? Do I manage to find a nice, safe pitch? Or do I end up going home early!!??
Which wild animal tried to eat me this time????
    All will be revealed!

One of my favourite places anywhere. Over the years I've spent well over 100 nights there in all seasons. So many great little spots to camp in. Even had a naming ceremony there when my child was born. There is actually a spring where you can get beautiful clear water from .I've drunk from it for nearly 40 years and never needed to filter it.
It's a special place which shows it's secrets the more you get to know it.
May you have many more wonderful nights. Blessed be.

@@AdventuresWithLilu Thank you for making the videos.
The spring is on the path at the bottom behind the tower. In with the old mine workings.
There are 2 underground streams which meet beneath the circle and then flow on beneath the oak tree coming out of the side of the hill lower down. The old miners carved a channel in a stone for it to trickle down.

This was a great vid, i was carrying near 30kg on my 1st Wild Camp... Tried to duck under a fallen tree much like U, but forgot the size/height of Rucksake, so I ended up on the ground wriggling around like a beached Whale...! Fortunately there was no-one else to see me other than my dog...! Was a warm March afternoon but turned very dark & very cold very quick, was at least -2 during night & in morning😯🥶, had an ice covered tent, but I learnt a few lessons...!🤣✔️👍💯...

Oooohh I remember the free parties up on that moor in the early 2000s. It's a truly magical place, and I say that as a truly cynical man. I met David Icke there and all kinds of wonderful and terrible people over the years, as well as the mad sheep and the goblins! Nice video.

Great video lilu. I am an ex military wild camper and usually just tarp camp. when I do occasionally use a tent( highlander blackthorn 2) i have one that the outer is put up first and the inner is hung on the inside. This is most handy for when you set up in the rain!…those tents that you have to put the inner up first get soaked if it’s raining! …. You literally just get into a went inner tent. Gonna be fun watching you evolve your kit and skills..new subber. Dave🇬🇧

Awesome job, every time you wild camp from now on you'll learn new tricks to make your life more comfortable, a few little things I'd point out, don't pitch too close to Bracken as it's where you get more ticks hanging out, always unpack your sleeping mat and inflate it inside your tent, puncturing an inflatable mat is a big issue so do everything you can do to limit the chances, inspect the ground where you pitch for anything sharp or pointy, also I wouldn't use a bivi bag inside a tent unless I really had too, they can be good for making a sleep system warmer in the winter but can also trap moisture and down bags like to breathe as much as possible, also reducing weight makes a big difference, I love camping higher up as I feel you can get further off the beaten track easier and get to spots where you just don't get anyone else walking by, and the higher you go the more you appreciate a lighter pack, but well done, solo wild camping is an awesome and very special experience!

Great video 👍. I recently got myself a Deuter rucksack (50+10). It is slightly taller than other backpacks I’ve used, but being top-heavy might have been down to the way it’s packed. There are loads of UA-cam videos about packing, but the basic principle is sleeping bag right at the bottom, then the heaviest items (usually cookset and tent) and then lighter items towards the top.
I find it’s easy to carry, as once fitted, the weight goes naturally onto the hips. The main issue is getting used to carrying the weight - but that’s all down to training.
Before I ventured out on my first wildcamp I made sure I was able to carry my fully loaded pack for 10 miles with no significant issues.
I’m looking forward to watching more of your adventures 👍

Due to shift work, I can't get out regularly, but I hope to get my weighted steps up (also need decent insoles for my boots that hurt after a few miles) Thanks for watching..more coming next week!

But usual I'm so remote I can hear whats around either way. Arh, great video! Well done on your first trip, you'll never forget it! My first was in Wales after doing Tryfan, it was blowing a gale all night but I bloody loved it! Only done a couple more since so I'll subscribe to your channel and get some tips! I like the look of Stanton moor and I'm not too far away so might try it soon. 👍

Well done on your first solo wildcamp, in such a stunning setting too, definitely a place on my list to visit, just come across your channel, very cool, have subbed, looking forward to watching more of your content, filter wise, sawyer squeeze is a good filter, I'd advise getting gas canister feet, help stabilise your cook system, you can pick up a cheap plastic one, weighs nothing, folds sml, brilliant bits of kit, good health and safe travels, cheers craig..🙏💚

I remember my first wild camp. Made lots of mistakes in the choice of pitch, brought too much in my pack but being in the middle of the forest at night was magical. And waking up to the morning mist in the trees was very relaxing! I’ve finally managed to get all my kit into one 50l pack and can still lose more I think. Best experience! Enjoy many more! Subbed and looking forward to more 👌

Hello Lilu, you say that your pack is 'top heavy.' It can be better sometimes to have it that way, if you have the heavy gear at the bottom, it can impede your stride. Keep the straps tight so that the pack is as close to your back as possible. this will stop the pack from pulling you back. The pack may seem heavy, but this in part is due to your fitness level. The more that you do it the stronger your body will cope. Over here in NZ we say that it takes 'two weeks to get your wind and legs". (That is doing it every day) and then before you know it the miles just fly by. If you tighten and then slacken the chest strap it will move the shoulder straps and it will change the 'hot spots' on your shoulders. You may have seen the Woollen pads that you can put over car seat belts to use as padding across the chest, they are good for pack straps as well. I get all my students to buy them, and it makes a difference (I have been in the mountains as a bushcraft instructor and guide for 50+ years, and still out there doing it. in fact, I am on my 34th tramp so far this year). Good on you for doing your first solo tramp (hike) Over here we call it tramping. In the forest here you can go in a straight line for weeks without going over the same ground twice and doing 10-to-12-hour days. There are many tips that I could tell you about, but I'm sure there are plenty of people that can teach you and guide you through your journey. Don't let fear get in the way, just be cautious. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ. ☺☺

    Very nice first wild camp!
I think everybody starts off with a super heavy bag. It boggles my mind to think of the weight I carried for my first camps! Over time, you'll swap bits of kit out for lighter alternatives, and get a bit more picky with what you take out with you, so it will get better. :)
    Thanks for sharing, cheers!

I've got the same tent the camo version held up quite well with some heavy downpours . Camped last night next to a Drystone wall on the Moors had a visit from a herd of cows and calf's in the middle of the night reaching over the wall and woken by heavy breathing and mooing Just thankful I was on the right side of the wall . Then had the police helicopter flying around up down in the valley searching for someone until 2.30 . Didn't get much sleep . Watched the sun come up and steam rising off the woodland below and then the clouds rolling in. Also watching the lighting storm rolling just before bed a few miles away along the coast . One thing I didn't account for was all the noise from the people living in the valley below and the constant traffic noise . Yep and forgot my ear plugs .

Hi Lilu, the stone you found with the "Y" and 1926 inscribed is called the "Duke of York Stone". I don't know much else about it but there are other similar stones dedicated to historical figures around that area. Most are in tact.
Love the video format, very organic. I'll check out your others. I'm planning to do the cape wrath trail soon and have been watching other hikers do the trail on youtube and its just stunning upm there. The weather doesn't bother me (Yorkshire Lad) and its the isolation and, well, the stunning scenery that won me over. Solo hiking long distance is quite new to me although I'm very used to camping. Very excited. Best of luck with the channel! 🙂
