    The irony is it is because of people making UA-cam videos about how and where to camp Raven crag isn't somewhere you should be advertising as a place you can "wildcamp"

      I have no issue with wild camping, but the amount of people advertising it and making it accessible for the masses is ruining it for everyone else. Also, Raven Crag isn't really somewhere we should be pitching up; just look at the state of the place. A big part of wild camping for me is going to these locations, looking at maps, and finding places to camp. TikTok is full of people giving grid references and parking locations to uneducated people who turn up, destroy the land, and leave a mess. Sorry to rant on your video btw 😊

  • @IvanDP1967

    So sorry your camp was spoilt by the thoughtlessness of others Ant.
    We're not wild campers (missus likes her creature comforts too much, even under canvas lol), but we do pick more basic sites, and always ask if we can have a quiet corner out of the way if possible.
    Probably like you, our camping trips are an escape from everyday life, and we just want time and space on our own.
    On a more positive note, the views were absolutely awesome, and we're go grateful for you sharing them with us..... Thank You

    • @AntSurviveTheNight
      @AntSurviveTheNight  5 місяців тому

      Hi Ivan, thank you pal. Yeah that's right, it's a way to release the stress from what's going on in the real world. Yeah just the same, nowadays on campsites there's notices all round saying quiet after this time, does n dont's which makes you feel at ease. With wild camping it's just unwritten rules and the hope that other campers are decent and have done their homework.
      Yes, the views were stunning in the morning which made me feel more chilled matey. Ahh cheers for the kind words, all the very best to you both!

    I remember getting annoyed when I was last there last November, such a beautiful spot but bloody campfires all over and a load of rubbish left as well, which I had to take back. I noticed you took the very steep route up, a route I never take especially after my friend broke her ankle coming down that way about a year ago. I would not fancy tripping over that guy line in the night if I needed a gypsy's, as it is a big drop over that edge. Shame about the visitors, shame about the night and that whole crag was set of fire a canny few years ago by idiots lighting fires and such a shame they are still about. It was great to see you got some great views in the morning mind. Cheers Alan

      @AntSurviveTheNight  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Alan, yeah they were all over mate, such a shame and really no need at all, none at all. The rubbish thankfully was at a minimum, not much at all thankfully. Oh boy did I Alan, it was OK really, I stopped a few times but made it up in no time. Yeah I always take the walking poles now pal, they really are a life saver.
      I know mate, I thought I had more room than that, thankfully I rarely need a wee once I'm in the tent so didn't come out after dark 😉.
      Yeah Andy just commented about the fore on the Crag a few years back, disgraceful isn't it, no need at all.
      Beautiful views come the morning yes mate, it was meant to be foggy so I was lucky!
      Big thanks Alan for sharing your thoughts pal

    Raven Crag when I did the Wainwrights was one of my favourite fells, fabulous for not a lot of height, the only downside it’s too short a walk in, it saddens me deeply that Wild Camping is getting bad press for people not following Leave no trace.
    It’s also very disappointing not to get the solitude, it’s the main reason I don’t wild camp much in the Lakes as I don’t know if I will be alone, in the yorkshire dales I know that I’m 99% likely to have it to myself which is why I mainly go there.
    Real shame they didn’t do the right thing and give you some space.
    Better luck next time.
    Give you a sub, hope you can do likewise 👍

    • @AntSurviveTheNight
      @AntSurviveTheNight  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Tito, yeah a beautiful area isn't it. Yeah pretty much straight up that way I did it, but didn't take long at all. That's it, people only see the negative press regarding wild camping not the good it brings. The majority of us do what's right and going back to the young lads, they did leave no trace because they must have packed up in the night and left because I was up at 5.30am and there wasn't a sign of them.
      I need to hit the Yorkshire Dales, lots to see around there.
      Thanks very much for your thoughts and support mate.

    I really feel for you, and it's a fine example of what respectful wild campers are coming across more often. What may seem trivial to some, your whole experience was ruined by inconsiderate people. Your video was shot at the notorious hotspot of Raven Crag, which a few years ago was in flames due to irresponsible campers.

    • @AntSurviveTheNight
      @AntSurviveTheNight  4 місяці тому

    I can’t understand the obsession with fires while camping. It makes everything stink of smoke and fills your gear with holes, and that’s before the big burnt holes on the ground.

    It's a difficult one because of course, they can camp where they like but at the same time, it's manners isn't it? Then to have them banging on for hours while trying to just relax is annoying as it's impossible to do so as all you can hear is them. Still, looked like a hell of a pitch you had there. Cheers

      @AntSurviveTheNight  5 місяців тому +1

      That's it mate, I don't own the area, this was never my point, my point was I wanted a peaceful chilled camp and I would have got it if they had looked for another pitch.

If you say no , then I'd go further up if u say yes ok then my names Tom , here's a beer while I'm pitching up . There's nothing to say they can't do ( and we all shouldn't be doing it anyway if it comes to that as it's illegal ) but a bit common sense respect for someone who's already there , and defo no fires up there especially .

    I’m trying to keep it polite. Absolutely disgusting behaviour by them. Fires ffs. A couple of years ago the whole cliff side and the area where you pitch caught fire. 🔥 destroyed it. Now it’s grown back. Ooh let’s have a fire. I wouldn’t have been so polite I’m afraid. The idiots who had a fire when I was there were locals. It’s not on. I’ve literally walked a further mile because someone was pitched where I had planned. It’ll not be long before they start really clamping down over there. I hope your “neighbors”see this and have the balls to apologise on here. But they won’t.

      Haha! You did keep it clean Andy! Very well done and hats off to you haha!
      Seriously though its right in what you say. I know first hand what a fire can do to a moorland. The Pennine's went up and burned for months a few years back, they could not stop it and that was through an ass with a BBQ. There's a time and a place for fires, we know this and so should anyone who as that idea in their head to start one.
      I would do the same mate, there is no way I would be anywhere near anybody on a camp. As I've said on other comments, as you know there are more than one spit to pitch up on the Crag itself but there's a whole forest just behind that is gorgeous. Madness, utter Madness to use your saying.
      It's very true, we are lucky to have a place like the Lake District that the locals turn a blind eye on wild campers. Stuff like this could change that.

Bumpy hilly fields with no amenities 50p to £1.50 pppn.They were the most memorable and exiting holidays I have had.But we just enjoyed them and didn't try to promote it as a thing to do.The paradox is that UA-camrs creating videos of this leisure pursuit have created the problem of too many sheeple doing this in too small of a space.Maybe avoid the easy to get to places and go a bit off piste to enjoy the peace and solitude that so many of us need

    This is a coincidence as I was about to start a series on camping etiquette and the byelaws on Dartmoor.
    I've no idea about the Lakes since camping isn't strictly 'legal' but common sense should come into practice when camping near someone else. I'd be pretty certain that campfires would be illegal though. The lighting of them in the hills and mountains, especially leaving scars, sheds a bad light on every camper regardless.

      Stay out of sight and for only one night
      A wild camp pitch must be above the highest fell wall (approximately 400m or 1200 feet high) and shouldn't be noticed by anybody else. The water authorities are now proactive at removing campers from this area currently. One erroneous decision is bad enough, so little reason to complain about others joining you is a little bit rich. I'm sure you leave no trace, and I'm quite sure many will shout me down for my input, but quite frankly the County doesn't need any more illegal (wild) camping on already contentious ground. I like fires. If I had the money I'd go live somewhere in bumfk nowhere, and have a proper fireplace.
    No modern utility or invention beats a fire.
    But from what I read, there are other issues with that there, like damage and possible danger, and even signs and such. So, while I understand the allure of having a fire, I wouldn't have done it and stuck to the rules. At least if I had other ways, like an Esbit stove, a campingaz and/or an FRH or whatever.
    As for there being people there. Well, that sucks a bit for you, I suppose. Not being able to do what you wanted to. And I understand being miffed. But that's how it is. Other people have other things they want to do, and a little bit of consideration goes both ways. Who's to say those lads wanted you there? Maybe they spent 2 years planning to come to that exact spot. You don't know either, do you?
    I think the only etiquette for wild camping is being respectful of your fellow campers if you see them, and of the nature you enjoy. No more than in life. Don't steal, don't kill, don't litter, don't commit indecent acts, don't start forest fires, etc. etc.
    Anything else will just have to be discussed between the parties involved. If you really wanted to be alone so badly, you could've gone to them and tried to make a deal or something.
    Or... Even better. Joined them, have a beer and a laugh instead.
    ç'est la vie, my friend. Other people want the same thing you do. There's only one thing for it. Go do it twice again, to make up for this time, eh? ;p

    • @AntSurviveTheNight
      @AntSurviveTheNight  5 місяців тому

      Hi mate, yeah I too love having a fire and pretty much like you said there's a time and a place isn't there. Yeah they had other means to make hot drinks and cook. Up there can be very dangerous and to start a blaze would be devastating just like a few years back.
      That's all fair enough but this is my point about etiquette, it's not a rule, there's no rules but etiquette then I think if your respect the outdoors you would respect someone's privacy especially when there are other spots. Even if I'd have planned it for 2 yrs and got there and someone else was pitched up in that spot I certainly wouldn't go and pitch right next to them just because I'd planned it. I have rules within myself, I respect other campers I respect their right to privacy.
      I don't owned any of the places I visit but what I should be able to do is have a little me time. Granted, its a small place but I limited the foot traffic by going in the week. Its ticked off and I'm happy I stayed especially the morning views, which unfortunately the lads who camped with me didn't get to see as the had pitched up in wet cold mud and by the time I got up to watch the sunrise at 5.30am they had packed up and left the scene.
      I was asked the question was it alright to be at the side of me and I replied with what's in the video. It was raining when they came so I was in my tent and thought it was the lads from the other group behind my tent arguing. I certainly wasn't going out and speaking to them while that was going on, by the time I was out they had pitched up.
      Anyways, big thanks for watching and thank you very much for your thoughts, all the best, Ant 👍

    Etiquette - it ain’t for everyone. Tragedy of the commons: when everyone is in it for themselves where the resource is finite (an analogy of the world these days) - remember the ‘First Rule’ of wild camping - like mushroom foraging, it’s best not to share too much information about where the best places to pitch are….

    Bang out of order those other two sets of campers Ant, fires and pitching too close are two of my pet hates. I was over Islay last year and got myself a perfect coastal park-up in my campervan, a 4x4 rocks up, parks right next to me (there were plenty of other places to park) and 4 lads got out and proceeded to pitch their tents in the front of my vehicle. WTF?? I went out and had a word and they were all like "Is there a problem? Where's the problem?" I ended up driving off and parking elsewhere. And for wild camping I always head somewhere I know no-one else goes to - and preferably midweek 😂 That area's been ruined with the fire pits, absolute bell-ends. atb DVS :)

    Just come across your video, new here. I totally get why you go up to a quiet place for the solitude and peace. I’m a mental health professional and spend as much time as possible in the countryside. Unfortunately I see lots of people disrespecting the great outdoors, but I also meet lots of wonderful people who respect their surroundings. I hike the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) and people treat Pen Y Fan like it’s a park. One of my pet hates is the dog bags being left on a trail. Anyway, your view was beautiful and I’m not sure about you but just to get that perspective for a moment is worth the hassle.

    It's great to see folk getting out and enjoying the outdoors but I wouldn't be expecting solitude at a popular view point next to a path. These days if you want peace and quiet you need to get off the beaten track. A look at a map will give you loads of options for quality solitude. There used to be a few well known principles around wild camping etiquette like 'arrive late and leave early' and camping above the highest intake wall was generally accepted as good practice, but it seems like anywhere is fair game now.
    As for other folk camping next to you - well, it's like parking in the Lakes. Folk arrive and the car park is full but they haven't considered a Plan B so they just park anyway. It's a whole new world.

Personally i dont really bother with them but i do understand that camping and campfires kind of went hand in hand,but there is great off the ground fire pits now that i would seriously advice camper to use and keep the fire off the ground .Most of all we all should respect nature and people's space...
