Is Diablo WORTH IT In 2023?!

- With Diablo IV finally here, it's time to celebrate one of the most acclaimed action RPG franchises. I grew up with games like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions: Return To Arms, so I was late to the Diablo hype starting with the third entry in the series. Today, we go through all of them and how this series has transformed alongside one of the best complete-in-box experiences to date.

Man, that Diablo II box is a work of art.
Because of boxes like that the term 'box art' was invented I guess. Good times
Retail stores with shelves dedicated to pc games…. It was a glorious time to be alive
The Butcher is Diablo to me. It was so frightening to me as a kid.
Agreed. As soon as you open the door and hear his voice. I always ran away lol.
"Ahh, fresh meat."
Did your version have the butcher cutscene?
Dude, my younger brother and I would start a new character, get to the Butcher’s door and save and quit because we were too scared. It took me a few years to gather up the courage to face him a second time and finally beat him.
Still just as frightening in Diablo 4 lmao
I first played Diablo on the PSone in 1999 at a friends house and immediately went out and bought it. Playing Diablo while listening to Venoms Black Metal and Welcome to Hell was an AMAZING memory Ill never forget. Really loving how Diablo 4 looks to bring back the super demonic infernal vibes.
Fuck do I ever love hearing that Diablo 1 music, takes me back to that time, and the acoustic guitar gives me Opeth vibes from that ‘97 era.
I'm so glad that Matty used the music from Tristram. I spent so much time in Diablo 1, so many fond memories hearing that music.
Idk if it was just me, but playing Diablo 1 on PC as a kid was so difficult and the Butcher use to freak me out, felt so dark n evil when he would say “Fresh meat” and come at you with that bloody apron on and huge cleaver. You don’t hear much people talk about 1. 2 was great too.
Same. Got this game when I was 10. Playing Diablo 3 for the first time when the butcher came out invoked some PTSD.
Lol pssies
@@thetrashcanman7537wow you’re so badass
I was 7 when I first had a go. My dad would play it and let me have a go. I was always shit scared when the butcher attacked
I remember as a kid walking through the isles of Fry's Electronics and seeing Diablo 2, always being intrigued by it. Never could afford a PC at the time though
Played Diablo 1 so damn much on ps1 as a kid. I imagine playing now is a little rough but it will always hold a special place in my gamer heart.
I was born a year after Diablo came out, but my dad was a big PC gamer so it was always installed on our family computer. I must've been 3 or 4 when I tried it and all I remember is arriving at a church/chapel and being so creeped out my the whole atmosphere the game created, that I refused to go any further. I noped out so quick, and went straight back to Age of Empires, Rollercoaster Tycoon and SimCity 3000. They were much more my vibe.
It's funny looking back now, some of my favourite games in recent memory have been Age of Empires 4, Planet Coaster and Cities Skylines. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Looking forward to trying Diablo 4, hopefully I'll make it a bit further this time lol.
Love thie comment!
I just wanted a physical copy of Diablo 2 resurrected for switch but they never made it
Matty always comes in with the videos at the right time, just got back into the switch and was looking for at diablo to play on there 😂
I had no idea there was a console version of Diablo. Loved that game as a kid.
yup its the one i played before school xd
We try not to talk about the PS1 version. It’s not the best.
A lot of people never finished and I was one of those people. It's slower compared to the pc. On pc it was more manageable but the ps1 will give you the hardest time. I still have it.
@@majorgear1021 Wrong
Enjoying the videos dude. Keep em coming.
I love that you strategically post these before a new game comes out. Watching these is my favorite way to build hype around a new game in a series before it comes out!!
Funfact: D1 on PS1 is easier than D1 on PC.
It lets you use pots from your inventory directly so you can just tank bosses by just using the quick health button. You arent limited to the 8 slots and forced to open your inv to get more manually.
And I only discovered that AFTER I got to Diablo himself XD
It also let players replay older quests in single player, if you saved your CHARACTER (which was a seperate save from your game save) and made a new game with them.
Basically giving people a way to farm things you previously needed to go online with the PC version to do again
I dont recall D1 being that hard on the PC, the Butcher beat me up the first time I think; but wasn't much trouble on subsequent playthroughs. I think I had the most trouble beating Diablo with the Rogue.
@@spacechannelfiver Note I said "easier than". D1 on PC wasn't really HARD though it did have some clucky mechanics like the knockback teleporting you back into monsters you were trying to run from. Which are mostly all due to the fact the game is actually a turn-based game in disguise! The game was supposed to be a turn-based game and was changed to "real time" at the last second, but really all they did was make the turns happen extremely quickly to SIMULATE real time. Thats why D1 has that...weirdness with rubberbanding. But the difficulty really came from not being ready for things like The Butcher.
Watching this breaks my heart. Seeing Diablo 2 and what was coming out and now looking at Blizzard today, how far they have fallen hurts
To be fair they are not the same people so there's that...
Diablo 4 is pretty good so not all is lost
I still have the huge battle chest big box for Diablo 2 and the expansion Lords of Destruction.
Best way to experience it imo.
I want that! It would like great on any gamers shelf.
I was an early adopter of the original PC version of the first Diablo and can tell you, you're absolutely right about how difficult it was! You REALLY needed a good team to make your way through the game at a decent pace! Also, I remember how shocked and impressed the game journalists were when the PS1 port came out and turned out to be so well done! Awesome review!! Thanks!
Have you/will you do an ES 4 oblivion complete in box with the strategy guide/lore book? Such a nostalgic piece of history for me
I think with D1 if you're going to play it, it's a must on PC instead of console. The UI looked quite a bit nicer too imo
BRO!! I was literally looking for a vid just like this, and my man Matty read muh mind
I remember sitting on my brothers bed watching him play Diablo 1 and 2 on his PC. I was always in a state of wonder.
I grew up on the PC version, but also got the PlayStation version at launch, and friends would take turns watching each person play.
I’m still surprised the were able to get it running in a controller!
Game packaging in 1996: 2 inch-thick, A4-sized, full-color embossed holographic box with cloth map and 100 page manual (Elder Scrolls DaggerFall) $50
Game packaging in 2023: $70
Well, with inflation into account, 50 USD in 1996 is around 98 USD in 2023, so… yeah, games are cheaper today.
SNES games were $70 in 1994
No manual hehe
I loved the days back when it was all about the marketing in Computer Gaming world and PC gamer magazine. The two page spreads and hilarious accessory advertising. That Diablo 2 box made me time travel in my mind 😅
Man Diablo 1 for me is so nostalgic, going to my friend house to play with my brothers and him.
We always played with 2 players with this game locally was fantastic! haha
best intro ever on youtube, class
I remember beating Diablo 1 on my friends computer one day after middle school on his old bulky PC his dad owned. Getting to Heck and beating Diablo felt like a huge accomplishment..
Then my dad and I got Diablo 2 around 2000? When I hit high school and it was such an awesome game
Diablo 1 is my favorite, I played it on my dad's computer for a while but then when it released on PlayStation I played it religiously. That was such a good port I really wish there was some way to get that game on modern consoles.
Diablo I & II Were GOATS!!
I remember the 8-12 hour marathons!! 😅
I’m enjoying watching you becoming the gaming 🐐
Man the memories!
Diablo 2 made such a big impact on me. I played diablo 2 and warcraft 3. Blizzard made pc gaming for that time. Nothing could touch those games until ps3 and xbox 360 era. People moved away from pc games and now we have gone full circle. Back with one of the best pc games. Only smoother and fresher than before. Listening to feedback to create a game everyone wanted. I think this is closer to diablo 2 follow up we have been all wanting. Honestly should be in the talks for game of the year. I dont know what else this game could have done other than go first person to really blow away the gaming community.
I got diablo 3 for the switch when i was stationed in Italy also Italian version lol I bought it without expectations and thankfully i was blown away. Now Diablo is one of my favorite franchises of all time. Loved both games, really enjoying D4 as well.
This is awesome Matty, I literally picked up Diablo on PS1 last night along with skies of arcadia legends at my local used game store!
So Skies must've cost you a good $2-300, right?
Skies was actually under $200
I actually prefer the visual style of Vicarious Visions' Diablo II: Resurrected to Diablo IV's graphics. It's just beautiful.
I was raised on D1. It will always have a special place for me. That PS1 version looks so foreign. It's a cool collection piece for sure, though.
I also had a lot of fun with Dark Alliance over the summer with my friend. It was Vice City, Dark Alliance and Marvel vs Capcom 2 for XBOX, all day, every day. He was the reason I even knew PC games existed. Gaming was out of control back in the day. We were playing all that stuff + Tribes, Unreal, CS, Posttal, Quake, Starcraft, Perfect Dark, MvC, Command and Conquer, Fallout. It was actually the golden age of gaming, the early 2000s. I remember I had just bought Capcom vs SnK 2 and that was absolutely insane. I was still obsessed with Perfect Dark when the XBOX came out, I remember it like yesterday, that's how crazy Perfect Dark was.
Dude I still to this day consider capcom vs SNK pro and capcom vs SNK 2 some of the best fighting games of all time. God those games were so damn good. There’s actually been some recent rumors that capcom and SNK might be teaming up again to make a third crossover game
I'm actually suprised that Diablo hasn't been talked about alot lately this franchise is part of why I became the gamer that I am with 2 and 3 even bought the first game during the holidays to prep up for number 4
Diablo II was my first, freshman year in College in the Summer before Fall. It was fun at the early stages of online games. I probably had that box and tossed it. Got Diablo 3 on switch but didn't get very far. D4 beta was fun, but waited for the review. I guess they got my money, but not paying the extra 20 for three days early access.
swords, axes, bows... we got everything you need right here!
Diablo on ps1 was the best thing ever. I think I played 300+ hours of it. It was my favorite thing ever. And the entire time was played in 2 player mode with a friend.
I actually have Diablo for the PS1. I didn't realize it released for it back in the day, but I picked it up for about $60 back in 2018. Definitely glad I got it then because yeah it's way more expensive now. It is hard, but definitely a cool game to have in the collection, especially since it is 2-player.
I also started with Diablo 3 and love it. The painted art style really holds up well and it’s one of the games I’ve replayed the most trying out different play styles and characters.
When I first tried Diablo 2 Resurrected and lost my stuff I thought the game was glitched. Need to give 2 another chance myself, I’ve just found a lot of stuff sort of obtuse to navigate. The soundtrack, atmosphere, environments are really phenomenal though.
Unlike D3 casualness, D2 is deep and very different- like a completely different game in the genre, for example if you look at how defense function in the game you'll understand why people put most of their stats in Vitality, there are many tricks like pre-open a scroll portal at difficult or uncertain areas so you can comeback to get your stuffs immediately if you get killed, and because of that made me feel dying in D2 much more impactful than any arpg I've played (and hardcore mode is really scariest too). Unlike other games where you feel like you're super human, this game is like Dark Souls of the genre, danger could be lurking in every corner especially when you still leveling through nightmare/hell
I hated the painting style of d3. Feels like a kids game.I played d1 and d2 back in the day and that style was creapy as hell. Really prefer that style.
@@BeMe91 i like both, glad they tried something new
bro you gotta understand Diablo 3 is casual trash produced by a chinese third party. Blizzard's original devs for diablo 2 weren't even in the company anymore. 3 is absolute crap, its just that the game genre is addictive so even the biggest trash will establish in the nostalgia part of your child brain. Diablo 2 is kilometers away from 3, in atmosphere, treatment of the player (you're expected to be intelligent) etc. Its impressive.
Yeah, I was going through my old boxes and I really liked the diablo 3 white box. It just looks nice.
Talk about Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2? YES, please. Champions of Norrath, and Champions: Return to Arms also. No one ever talks about them. Those were some of my first real RPGs, along with Morrowind, so maybe I have nostalgia goggles on, but I feel like they're such overlooked and underrated games. Especially Dark Alliance 1 & 2.
i grew up heavy with Diablo 2. I have the Lord of Destruction special release box set, it sits high on my shelf of nostalgia games.
Diablo 1 for the PS had couch coop! I loved that game
Somehow I got ahold of Diablo 1 back when it came out on a leased PC from school and I loved the Arcane power! Most than a decade later I loved D3 when it first came out and loved it. Now another decade late with D4 so far it is ok but I can play it with friends cross platform which makes it better.
You get a sub for that KOTOR mention
My 1st time playing Diablo ever was a Demo for Diablo 3 on the PS3 back when it was first released 😅
Yes! I'm playing Diablo 4 on early access it's so much fun
I think you would really enjoy a guided play of Diablo 2. Follow a build guide, and once you get over the mid-game difficulty spike I promise you will enjoy d2 a lot more.
I've never played an isometric dungeon crawling RPG before but have been wanting to check one out and Diablo is one that catches my eye. is the original a good first RPG? if not what can you guys recommend as a good introduction to those types of RPGs?
I played Diablo 3 on ps3 back in the day. Just got the prime evil collection on sale on Xbox for 20 bucks. Such a good deal for Diablo 3 and 2 remastered
played the hell out of diablo 1 in 1997 I was 9 y.o and shitting bricks when I hear " Fresh Meat " for the 1st time in my dads room with full volume.
I was merely a boy when entering the D1 monastery of Tristram, but after The Butcher finally lay broken and bloodied at my feet, I left a man.
I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but as an OG Diablo fan that played both PC and PS versions, I actually preferred using the controller on the PS to the mouse on PC. Didn't know the price spiked so high on it, wish I'd kept it. I've still got my Diablo 2 Collectors edition proudly displayed on my big box shelf. Blizzard used to make killer special editions back then.
I still have D1 for PS somewhere in my house.
Always wanted to try D1 cooperative on PSX
Game is an absolute blast solo.
I’m loving D4 but the rubber banding is really hampering my experience. I don’t have the best internet but I don’t have problems with any other online game. I mean am I streaming the game? And if so what’s taking up almost 80gigs of space on my PlayStation 5?
when I saw the diablo 2 pc case my jaw dropped
to be fair... Blizzard does let you buy a digital version of diablo 1 when you look through the library of classic games. It's like $7.99 for the base game and Hellfire expansion
Love all Diablo games, D2R has been perfection. Stoked for D4, but it seems more in line with D3 style of play.
Diablo 1 is very playeble today since you still can buy it today and there is a mod made for it that you can play lots of new classes new gear and monsters, its very fun
Since you love these games, I would highly recommend Warhammer Inquisitor. It's like the perfect Diablo style game in space because it still gets to be hellish and gory and dark and it has some really great combat and some really interesting classes and subclasses. And the story is pretty darn good as well
I remember going to walmart as a kid to play the god of war demo. I would always see the box art for D2 and thinking “yeah Im not touching this dam game, looks scary af” 😂
4k video when? 😊
I started with Diablo in reverse: my first game was Diablo 3, currently playing 1 and 2 (off and on). While I enjoy the gameplay and lore, certain things Blizzard did during Diablo 3 burned me as a customer and prevetn me from buying 4. The first time I played Diablo was the PS1 version and being able to see provcedural generation was really cool.
The game loks amazing, and I hope everyone playing it enjoys it.
I'm currently level 40 in Diablo 4
Woooo buddy
🔥🔥🔥
Haha I graduated high school when you were 2...Jeebus.
Champions of norath on the ps2 was my shizz
you didnt play d2 with expansion?
I read the Warcraft 3 manual front to back in middle school. Blizzard used to be so good. 😭
I was going to buy Diablo 4 till I looked at my backlog and counted 80 games I bought and haven’t played dating back since 2011….I need help
Diablo ll GOAT
One word....YES
Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 were the whole reason I got into PC gaming as a kid. Then WoW consumed my high school life. Diablo 4 definitely gives me similar feelings to when I played Diablo 2. Ended up enjoying 3 with time but at first I hated it because it was so cartoony and different.
Doesn't the M in PSM stand for Magazine? That's like people that say PIN number, the word is already in the acronym.
i tried getting into diablo 3 and man i just could not get into it. i tried playing on the hardest (available to me) difficulty and it was just so painfully easy i was just bored out of my mind. i played for quite a few hours and i don’t remember dying it was just so fucking brain dead. i know it supposedly gets harder after the first play through but i’m not playing through an entire game just to get to where it gets good
I grew up on the 1st one it’s so basic yet has everything I need imo 🤓
People always say action RPGs are diffiicult. For me it was the opposite. They are grinders. Yes. It that is what makes them easy as well.
Can't beat Diablo at lvl 24. Oh well. Go back and search the area for better loot an lvl.
Platformer people don't get the "training idea" You find areas to lvl and perfect your skills.
It is a game that you must play and nothing else. LOL
I'd be stuck and just play for an hour. At the end of that time I'd go back stronger and better skilled.
Platfomers don't have that. It is designed to beat any level in no more than 7 tries. So good to go back to and play those to bypass the grind.
Yet if those seven times are still not enough then what? So in my head the RPG was easier. Your are always gaining even if you are not gaining throughout the game. Called building a character. Plus there is always guides to move through faster if you want.
Getting wrecked by the butcher is a diablo 1 rite of passage 😂. I remember playing on dialup with a friend a friend and locking him in the room with the boss👌
The super dragon ball heros card game would be cool to see
Honestly growing up the only game I played like this is fate and torchlight both of them and I enjoyed all of those more then Diablo three the only Diablo I have played
I feel the same way about d3. It was the first one I played and it’s the second most played game I have behind WoW. D4 is great so far
Absolutely worth it!!!
Playing Diablo III on Switch and it's awesome. Plays as good on the Ps3!
does he know the diablo 2 case has another side with an install disk? 10:08
Kept saying warcrarft 2 .... I was like Bruh disrespect
D1 was excellent!!
Diablo 2 was goat.
"MOO MOO"
D2 is undoubtedly the best of the franchise so far( words still out on D4). Deep, challenging, and balanced. D3 was such a disaster at launch that all attempts to fix it work reapers of souls trivialized the challenge and it ended up feeling like legendary vomit. Still fun though.
Loving D4 so far! Definitely feels like they took the parts of D2 and D3 that people like and started there.
Is Diablo 2 Resurrected worth 40€? Diablo 3‘s campaign is the only experience I have had with the Diablo franchise
Incorrect if you preorder the standard edition you WILL NOT gain early access.
I mean yeah you drop your items in D2 but you can just walk back to your body and pick them up... Or if you leave the game without picking up more items and zone back in your corpse spawns in town and you can pick them back up lol.
Diablo 1, yes!
Diablo 2, yes!
Diablo 3, error 37
Diablo 1-2 will forever be worth it
Damn… rip Blizzard… I actually like Diablo 4 but damn these older titles are so cool box art and all
