With the spirit of experimentation running through our veins, we sit down with a "cosmetically flawed" PS2 and PS3 to see just what kind of quality we're getting for the high prices we're paying.

Appreciate everyone's patience as we got this re-uploaded! Indeed, the green screen was my lack of knowledge and I appreciate the education. At least y'all know I mean it when I say I'm technologically illiterate when it comes to things such as that. As I said in the video, we want to take a fair approach and aren't just teeing off for the sake of it so I had to ensure we got that correction in and trimmed out any additional mentionings of the green screen as it should not factor into the final verdict at the end.
With that said, some asked "how didn't he know that" and the truth is I've never had to do that for the other four PS2s I've set up using the same HDMI converter/cable whether it be my own, my brother's, or a couple of my buddies. Strange and unlucky, but happy to learn something new!

The Old Skool controller just likely doesn't work during the setup process. You usually need an OEM controller for that.

I've asked every retro game store I've been to what their opinion of DK Oldies was after I first heard of them because of the recent bs they've been up to and every one either laughed or said "I'd never trust them, even beyond wanting you to buy from us."
I have noticed that as the PS3 systems get older and the eject mechanism gets weaker, the discs start getting caught on that "felt material" that lines the eject slot.
That kickflip line had me in tears 😭

I was just about to buy a PS3 ( backwards compatible) from DK oldies. I’m glad I watched this video because I would have lost it if I paid top money and pieces start falling off as soon as I open the box 🤣. Love your videos and your one of the people that got me back into collecting video games from my childhood.🙌🏾🙏🏾
The problem with the controller was not the controller it was the cable your using. There are charging only cables and there are cables that have data capabilities and also charge. The first cable was a charge only cable. The white cable can do both, hence why it worked the second time
Honestly the one thing I must have overlooked in any computer classes I have taken, was the fact that there is a charging cord and a dual charging/data cord. (Is there a singular data cord I’d imagine?) but good point Kaptin
And honestly idk how he didn’t connect those dots. When he used the controller from them the second time with the white cord he acknowledges that now it works, yet isn’t like, “ah shit, wait, it’s prob the cord”

Geez, I recently sold 2 Silver PS2s and they definitely looked 50 times better than the one u got from DK Oldies, I can Def assure they were for less money too. Glad ur doing this tho, brings to light what's going on there. If u need PS2 controllers, feel free to hit me up, I have an abundance of them, like a ridiculous amount of them and they all work. I think the Controller needed to charge, to make the buttons work. I have a fat ps3, overheats within a half hour, and very loud. I got two slim ps3s that work like new.
It appears what changed was you started using your own cable with the DKOldies controller instead of the short one they provided and then it started working

Problem with the controller was likely the cable/port. When you jiggled the cable is when it finally connected, and later when it was working you were using your old white cable.
Back when I was like 12 and 13 I owned a silver PlayStation slim that my dad bought for me at a pawn shop and I loved it.

There's a retro game store not far from where i live, they have Playstation 1 for $40 ps2 and ps3 for $90-$10] and those prices included all hook ups and a controller with a 1 month warranty
Controller was most likely the cord as soon as you used the white cord it worked fine.
This is crazy that DKOldies is still not refurbishing their consoles for that high of a price...

The green screen that was there they should fix already if it’s a console defect not you unless it’s a tv defect and it reads the console for the first time or someshit.
The controller should work if it doesn’t that’s bullshit. They got to 100% without a doubt clean the inside and check everything old to make it new swap around etc then the price what you paid for would seem reasonable.
But you got to think how they get all those consoles etc, others rip them off when they buy them for sure and they must be around garage sales a lot of buy it off of people at garage sales and up the prices.

I’d never buy something flawed sight unseen though. It’s nuts that people buy from DKO when you get a far better idea of what you’re getting on eBay, Mercari, etc…

Did you notice that you changed cables when you went back to the DK supplied controller? Pretty sure from vid that when u tried first time cable was black
After watching all these DK Oldies videos, I have come to the conclusion that they DO serve a purpose. Its for the people that want to get into retro gaming and do not want to deal with Ebay shenanigans. They are willing to pay more to just get a console that they know will show up and if there is an issue within a year you get to return it for another working console. Still they are down bad for not refurbing anything.
The craziest part of this is the price. I can buy that PS3 for $20 at my local McKays in that condition. $350 should be a mint condition PS3 and PS2 with first party controllers. It’s cool that they’re cleaning them now but them prices need to come waaaay down
off topic but the handsome colection (borderlands 2 + all dlc except fight for sanctuary (it didnt exist at the time) and borderlands the pre sequel with all dlcs) is the best collection ever

I think that their business is running on the return policy. If you send it back eventually someone will buy it for the full price and not return it. Probably not that expensive for them to process a return.

It's utterly INSANE the price and market for old gaming NOWADAYS! It was like (everyone & there mom got a nickel for their old gaming device's) and now these companies are charging A FORTUNE for anyone who wants to play old games. *(The OG Halo CE is way better than 343's Halo CE anniversary edition just FYI)
The prices seem pretty decent to me, provided they were doing a good job of refurbishing the console. You have to remember that the business needs to source the consoles, buy the consoles (some of which they will lose money on as it will break within the 1 year warranty), do the refurbishment, pay all the other usual business expenses, and make a profit. The problem is the questionable refurbishment, not the prices imo.

Huh, is that a common issue with PS3's? Is that why the super slim had that slide over top for discs?
It seems like the controller changed cables? It had the black cable when you tried it the first time. Then you had the white cable when you tried your controller you know that worked. And when you are playing with the new controller later in the video, when it's actually working correctly, the cable is the white one, not the black one you used originally for it. That's the only thing I can think of as being different?
I know the cable is only the charger, essentially, but I have had issues in the past where the cable I was using was making my controller work abnormally.
I was going to say the same thing. Also I was going to say that I've had issues where the internal battery on the controller was so drained that when I first plugged it in, it's slow to respond to button presses until it actually charges up a bit.

Thats why i love the super slim PS3. No motorized disc drive to worry about, and they just work. Simple, and the red and blue systems look awesome. I used to love the slim PS3 the most, but their disc drives have a lot of issues. Just wish Sony would have done full backwards compat with PS2 on all PS3s. Xbox has always had backwards compat won, except the PS2 plays all PS1 games. That's the only time Sony won that
So he didn't know the difference between composite and component. Probably lots of people don't know that difference. It's a little sad that anyone purported to be into consoles of the 480p era wouldn't know it. Like, how can you not run into that issue earlier in your gaming career? I learned the difference back when I was first starting to capture game footage for my old consoles that can output both composite and component. If you're into Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, Wii, PS3, and similar consoles, then knowing about composite and component is a massive help to playing your games in the best quality. With most of those consoles, one cable and one setting change is all it takes to get that glorious progressive scan image. Maybe some don't care.
Gotta give credit where its due, not a single drop of manjuice on the consoles.

DK oldies doesn't have a warranty putting that sticker on is illegal in the United States and is just there to scare you. They are not allowed to put that sticker on cause it's illegal in the United States.
