Anyone getting into early 2000’s emo needs to be familiar with “Seven Years” by Saosin. It exemplifies the transition from underground to mainstream for the emo scene. They produced it on their guitarists laptop and it totally blew up and got them a major label record deal.
It's incredible to see a Story of the Year fan being created in real time lol. These guys are still going strong, releasing a new album in March, and in my opinion they never fell off it's just the popularity of their genre declined. Anybody reading this, go listen to 'Tear me to Pieces' by SOTY to get a feel for how they sound nowdays.
Tear me to pieces might be my favorite soty song! Half time kinda main riff, followed by classic story of the year sped up refrain. Got ADTR vibes from it, while retaining what I've always loved about SOTY.
No joke, going through his playlist, there's been 3 songs so far where I think "Wow, I haven't heard this song in 15-20 years" and the wave of nostalgia hits hard lmao.
Love the reactions! That middle part where they suddenly speed up is like in a video game when you hit a speed boost... Just lightning in my veins every time. Then they have the audacity to drop it back into half time and keep going. One of my favorite songs from thos era of pop-punk/emo.
This is the first story of the year reaction I’ve ever seen and I’m glad you enjoyed it so thoroughly. This album doesn’t have a single blemish imo. One of the best albums of the genre.
Gotta second Coheed and Cambria. Their albums have encapsulated entire eras of my life. Still going strong. It's tough for me to choose a song tho. (I like too many to have faves.) I think I'd have to go back to In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. It holds so many memories for me and is active / switchy enough that 8m of it won't put someone to sleep. (I just came off Rob's reaction to Pearl Jam - Alive, so that's a concern of mine. Haha No hate, Rob, the honesty is priceless.) Newer, I'd prolly go Domino the Destitute, but again...long. This genre is a gateway to metalcore. I started on these type of bands as a teenager, so they're a bit mild to me. I still love them and their new stuff, but they don't scratch the itch that heavier stuff does. Since you like this style so much, I recommend "A Day to Remember" as a good next step into heavier music. Their newest single "Miracle" is a good example of the modernized heavy version of this style. I hope you go further and eventually get to some "Spiritbox". Enjoy the journey!
This sends me back to high school. Thanks for these vids. I've had a smile on my face bingeing your videos the last hour. Gonna go listen to this whole album now.
New to the channel, love this reaction. It’s great to see someone genuinely enjoy this music. Emo gets a bad wrap for the mainstream bands that aren’t truly what the genre represents. There is tons of bands that you would enjoy that aren’t all about cutting your wrists and wearing guyliner lol armor for sleep. The early November. Tigers jaw. Hot mulligan. Something corporate. American football. Any of these bands would be a great reaction
From one Rob to another… check out their new stuff dropping in March. That era of music 2003-2007 ish was definitely something special. It’s making a strong comeback! Let’s goooooo!
It's called "post-hardcore" now. No one likes it. (Similar to how no one likes Justin Bieber.) "Emo" was never a valid term because people kept trying to include legit bands when they said that word.
Story of the year was one of my favorite bands. They had this, anthem of our dying day, and the theme for WWE star Christian. Unfortunately I think most people didn't follow them after that first album. But the followups were decent. My favorite song is We're not gonna make it" off of their album black swan. It was a more political album but as someone who dates outside my race I thought the song was solid.

Yup! I got your style. You need "All Downhill from Here" by New Found Glory. Or anything Blink-182. You'd love Sum-41, Good Charlotte, NOFX, Lagwagon. Subscribed
Ohio Is For Lovers - Hawthorne Heights, Sugar, We're Goin Down - Fall Out Boy, and Burn This City - Cartel! Oh my Lord, Cartel! One of my favorite bands growing up. If you like this kind of music, you'll love these songs. Cheers man! Enjoy the music
Awesome to see SOTY get some recognition they were my gateway for more technical stuff as a teen. If you dig that clean emo guitar driven build then into the drop screams you should really check out The Kill by Thirty Seconds To Mars
Seen a few of your other reactions, but I have to say... being someone who grew up with the song... I don't think I've ever been more excited for a video. I haven't gotten to reaction yet because I can't stop laughing at all the wonderful ways this could go down. This shit was like the emo kid mating call back then. I have literal tears. There are certain places and situations where you can just scream at the top of your lungs "UNTIL THE DAY I DAY" and people will immediately respond. I've seen happen.
I lost ya for a bit. Welcome back, I guess... Maybe I was the lost one. Good luck in L.A. You just turned me on to Story Of The Year. Great tune and great reaction. I had a couple tracks on various compilations, but this is pretty killer. Had to go back thru and make sure I didn't miss anything and ran across this. Awesome! Thanks man!
I had never listened to SOTY songs other than their song Just Close Your Eyes. This song was quite good too! I'm glad I got to listen to it alongside someone else. I'm enjoying your content! Keep it up and you'll break through that 100k milestone, no doubt!
This song came out in 2003. Story of the Year was really big in the rock scene back in the early 2000's. They had their videos played on MTV constantly. They were signed to Madonna's record label Maverick Records. This is definitely their biggest song. They're about to drop a new album next month. You should react to their newer stuff.
I saw them live last month when they opened for Yellowcard in ATL and they sound amazing live! I don't know if you have reacted to Yellowcard yet but you should! Love your content!
Bruh, all about this energy you got. I’ve got a whole list of songs that were foundation to my whole existence. FUSE tv after school with these jams define who I am!!!!! Get it bruh, if you need/want more recommendations I’ve got whole playlists of this same flavor of stuff
yo, I can tell already your reactions will pop off. Your coworkers might be your former coworkers soon. Your gonna like some metal. Going to be in some mash pits at rock concerts by the end of 2023 haha
Super late to this, but its so nice to see a SOTY reaction 😊 I saw these guys open for My Chemical Romance in 2003 for my very first concert and they put on a great show. Glad to see them getting some love
I used to listen to them in my chu (barracks) while stationed in Iraq. Thanks for loving this song dude. I subbed, hope to see more metal reactions and stuff. =)
Ok, I think I know a rock song you will love. “Cult of Personality” from Living Colour. I grew up on rap and hip hop but Living Colour was the first band that got me into rock music.
A song came out when my youngest became a teen that was perfectly appropriate. I had 5 teens in my house at the time, all with different music tastes, but I claimed it as my anthem with no guilt (one of the only songs by My Chemical Romance that I liked at the time) -- "Teenagers". With the chorus saying 'teenagers scare the living shit outa me', and me being the favorite cabby / guardian, it was spot on! Also, it's great watching when you really get into a song, or when you 'nope the fuck out' of something, thanks man!
@RobTV Another band you should check out that is in the same vein as Story of the Year should be The Used: Buried Myself Alive, A Taste of Ink, A Box Full of Sharp Objects…. All good music to get you into that mid 2000’s vibe!
Man, this series is cool as hell. It’s good vibes to see folks from different walks appreciating the same stuff. I’m 1000% sure you’d like “What it is to Burn” by Finch, but it’s gotta be the original “demo version.” They got a new singer and recorded it again, but that version is wack. Man, also check out “Street Car” by Funeral For A Friend.
While it isn't pop, it's got a catch tune, catchy chord progression and the guitar riff that repeats sounds so good! And the dude's voice also goes from singing to extreme screaming. They sound way better than some of the other popular bands of the time
Never heard of this one myself. Rock has a lot of sub-genres. This is what would be called Emo Rock. Never got into it when I was younger but I do find I kind of like it now. If I may add to your list, Fat Lip by Sum 41. My favorite rock is Punk.
SOTY wouldn't have been a thing without John Feldman. Their first album was polished so much it really was perfect. Feldman was either a writer/producer/a&r, or all 3 for the Used, My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Atreyu, 311, Beartooth, Korn, Godsmack, etc, etc, etc... Musical (industry) genius!
Loved your reaction, you bring as much energy to the reaction as they did to the song lol. You should do The Taste of Ink by he Used, I heard it for the first time the other day and added it to my playlist along with this song
I've watched so many reaction videos and have not subbed to a single one. You have earned a sub, sir. Finally somebody got what Zach de la Rocha was trying to convey! Your open-mindedness to try emo music, of all things, is amazing! Thanks for doing this series. As a white watcher, it feels gratifying and gives a vicarious sense of togetherness to watch you experience elements of white culture. I'll throw out some recommendations as well if you're looking for some, just let me know!
If you like this type of music, you might like the band “Taking Back Sunday” and the song “cute without the ‘e’.” Also, the band “The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus” and the song “Face Down” is highly recommended.
There was a band called Thursday that had a lot of similar sounding songs. It would also be interesting to see your reaction to the grateful dead. Completely different sound and vibe. I just discovered your videos today so you probably have a list a mile long by now.
That formula you talking about is all over metal as well. Metallica, Enter the Sandman, Master of puppets, Battery... Many more man, you're gonna have content for a long time. Cant wait for your honest opinions on all the music
There's a WHOLE world of good emo music. If you liked this, you have to go to the ones who put emo on the map. Check out Taking Back Sunday "make damn sure".

As a white watcher, it feels gratifying and gives a vicarious sense of togetherness to watch you experience elements of white culture. I'll throw out some recommendations as well if you're looking for some, just let me know!
I love this! hahaha great reaction video!
Crazy hearing you explain your taste in music. Super similar to mine. Would love a sample of your hip hop playlist!
fuck yea bro! I loved watching you react to this.. there is soooooo much more. i cant wait to see it.
Oooo I like this. Was looking for more pop punk type shit myself recently. 🔥
Based on your comments, I need to see your reaction to “Pisces” by Jinjer!!!
Dawg I found them when I first played Need For Speed: Underground when I was a kid. They're a pretty talented group for sure.
If you like this type of music, you might like the band “Taking Back Sunday” and the song “cute without the ‘e’.” Also, the band “The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus” and the song “Face Down” is highly recommended.
🤌🤌🤌🤌
Congrats... On finding the best band in the world
Bro, I'm like 5 videos in and you have the correct taste in music.
I love when they start screaming like that in songs
I love this song bro. It's a straight banger!
Any Day to Remember song will blow you away!
Being latin in a white town I had access to all this while listening to hip hop and rap. Love seeing other people enjoy different music.
Crazy to think this album will 20 years old in just a few months. Man I feel old! lol
Jesus, the way they switch up the rhythm pocket like 6 times before the second chorus is insane. This isn’t even emo it’s post-hardcore
You got the headbangimg, now all us rockers need to teach you one thing: 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Story of the Year has a lot of great songs. Highly recommend more of them.
There's a WHOLE world of good emo music. If you liked this, you have to go to the ones who put emo on the map. Check out Taking Back Sunday "make damn sure".
Thursday and Brand New are great emo bands too.
