      I don´t think it´s suicide either. But I´d recommend Laravel then probably, if you wanna be more in control by default and be able to do more complex custom things without much annoyance in your way. Also wordpress isn´t exactly the most secure thing either, witch when you go beyond a simple website for advertisement or a blog or what not could get a serious concern too.

      Most businesses actually are using Magneto or Wordpress platforms.. I mean why hire someone and pay tens of thousands of dollars when you can buy this shit for like 30$, some plugins, it ends up being about 100$, and then pay someone to set it up for like 1000$ if you can't follow instructions. I can see why devs would hate wordpress but it's not like they can offer something better from scratch even if they're like technically "the best ever" most times, that has the opportunity to build off of so easily, with years of plugins and stuff, or abilities to make your own stuff to integrate to that existing platform. It's just something that was waiting to happen I guess. That being said, it is actually "Easy" to work with, but I find interviewing for it and being shown a typical wordpress webpage makes me feel unenthusiastic. Then it's like "well what do you want me to add to this siht".. and it throws off the person in the interview because usually they have something functioning already and nothing you really do to their website is going to increase their business potential tbh.

    As a php developer WordPress is such an easy money maker. Set up is a breeze. A basic understanding of html and css lets make customization's beyond the frontend and knowing php lets you really customize (but rarely have to use it, there is always a plugin that will do it). The real money is in the maintenance fees. After the work is done, you offer a monthly maintenance fee which usually just requires hitting "update" once a month on various plugins and themes. The key is to always make a child theme so updates won't effect your themes.

    • @RockstahRolln
      @RockstahRolln 5 років тому +18

      Could you explain this a bit further? "The key is to always make a child theme so updates won't effect your themes."

    • @DoomFinger511
      @DoomFinger511 5 років тому +99

      @@RockstahRolln When you install a theme it has all the php, css and every other file needed to make "that theme". However lets say you want to edit the color or layout slightly for the client. IF you edited the original files (like 'style.css'), then when the day comes that the theme has an update, ALL those edited files would be deleted and overwritten with the NEW updated theme files. So you'd lose all your changes.
      However, a child theme (it's easy to google how to make one) is basically a copy of the style.css file (and any other files you want to add or edit) which you link to the original 'parent' theme. WordPress automatically loads those files FIRST, THEN it loads the files in the parent theme. The advantage is that if there is a theme update, WordPress will ignore any style or functionality edits you made since it loads the files in the child theme first.

    I've dedicated years of my life to actually learn to code and then learn frameworks and libraries to bring everything together, I often ask myself why didn't I just learn word press or Drupal and make money freelancing with those? From what I've seen, people who didn't actually take the time to learn to code and develop from scratch are at the mercy of plugins and often can't deliver on bigger projects that require them to create functionality that hasn't been implemented into some buggy code.

      @Zapan Trader I wouldn't say I even know that much; I learned about an hour's worth of a beginner tutorial and was mostly concerned about learning the syntax and how to structure the files. I don't modify the theme files through php that much; mostly I just do it to get rid of or resize the sidebars, footers, extra widgets, etc that came with the theme. I don't see the point in hard-coding a theme from scratch if you're using Wordpress, because if you're going to do that you might as well build the whole thing and host it yourself.

    • @blaisetelfer8499
      @blaisetelfer8499 4 роки тому +4

      @Zapan Trader and I only use Wordpress if the client insists, if the client already has a Wordpress and just wants it modified, or if they don't have much of a budget. If they can only spend $300-$500, I'm happy to do business with them but I can't afford to spend a week building their site. WP is a great solution to this, though, because it's easier to get the basic layout done on the first day and hook them up with an SEO.

    I can understand webdevelopers getting a bit pissy about Wordpress. After all they have spent a lot of time and money learning coding etc to give them the skills to build sites from scratch, and then comes along a platform that allows pretty much anybody with a reasonable amount of grey matter between their ears and a some spare time and determination to build functional and professional looking websites. A good analogy would be the old method of painting cars - in the early days the same methods of painting coaches (horse drawn) were used to paint the early cars ie lots of coats of paint, each coat being flatted (rubbed) back with emery paper, then another coat, another coat etc and finally a polish to acheive a highly glossed paint finnish. Then some clever sod invents a thing called a spray gun which sprays paint on evenly and quickly and requires much less skill to produce nearly the same finish. So within a short time coach painters were out of work as their skills were no longer required other than in high end cars. It's true of other aspects of life as well. Wordpress is pretty much the DIY version of Webdeveloping. It's just technical evolution.

    I think for me it's quite simple. Just use the tool which will get work done as fast as possible. If Wordpress is that tool then so be it, if you need to write code to get the work done then do so. I don't think there is any pride in calling yourself a "developer" if you are not making money from it. Some years back I used to write code even for simple websites until I realised it's a waste of time as clients don't really care whether you are using a CMS to develop or coding from scratch. They just want their work done.

      If a small customer wants a static website all you have to do is get a license from Divi, Elementor, or some other builder then get the job done in 3-5 hours and finally charge the client 1k. It's a great work tool, as a freelancer there's no reason to take pride in building websites from scratch for a client who pays you less than 2k.

    I am learning html, and I have already purchased a domain name. I really wanna learn html, css and php to start getting into the coding of my own website but I am not so innocent to think i will learn those three in a short time and I could really use the website as of right now. Would you recommend pulling the ¨developer¨ card and getting themes online so I can start with my website right now and as time goes by, add some self made code until that is the standard for me?
    And also, if I may... How dangerous is it to continue my website without trademarking or wordmarking the name of my domain name? Because that process is expensive and takes a lot of time and it isn´t even guaranteed, considering that my website is still on diapers and it won´t be an ecommerce but a contect creation an opinion blog?

    I've done several web applications, and most of my clients wants a specific design output or layout. I'm required to do extensive algorithm, calculations such as total amounts, total discounts, expiry dates, etc. and display them on the page depending on the search criterias selected by the user. Sometimes I have to redirect a link to a detail page with customized designs, images and them. So, I usually create customized pages. Moreover, I am working with another team member who codes and design separate pages with heavy algorithms and calculations too. After a few days or a week, we meet and integrates those pages we created separately and independently. This way we could create a whole web application even if we work separately. I've tried Word Press before but I found it very limiting in terms of what I could do for a dynamic website such as Online Registration, Online Reservations, Inventory, (tour, enrollment, etc). Wordpress is fast, simple and has tons of plugins and templates. This is ideal for small scale business but for a dynamic medium to large scale businesses, hard-coding is what I need.

    First time I've heard a developer don't like wordpress. I've worked with hundreds of devs all over the world, and they don't hate it. They see it as another tool to speed things up, to get things done esp. if the project time sensitive. Its like you're using Frameworks, except WP is a CMS. Its the same reason why you need to use Frameworks -- to speed things up and make life easier. Its a bit lazy way but it will get things done quicker than coding it from scratch/manually. CMS is a CMS, you can custom-tailor it to the client's specifications, you can create your own plugin,widgets,etc. but of course, like frameworks, you just try to learn and use the components or in wp template tags, hook/filters, that is needed for you to create wordpress from scratch -- that is if you want to code it from scratch, creating your own parent-theme/template. I can tell you have less knowledge with wordpress judging from what you say in this vid
    I do agree there's tons of other people out there calling themselves web 'developers' where all they do is just pick a theme in wp and make small adjustments and call it done. I'm not a dev but I have a good background in Php, sass/css, jq/js, html(jade and standard). Its easy to create a parent-theme in wordpress. which is why WP is the #1 most used CMS in the world because, its well documented, so it means, easy to code using its template tags, hooks/filters, widgets etc.. But nowadays, these so called devs just used drag and drop sht like Elementor, Beaver, VC, Oxy. But gotta admit, 10 out of 10, about 8/10 ask for WP. about 4/10 clients asking for a beaver or elementor, so they can update themselves easily. But rest of it don't freakin care what you use, all they care about is to find him solutions and create them a functional well-built site. And yeah, 7/10 mostly time sensitive so yeah, WP is the only way we go to.
    Its like this. I tell you to create me a site that has ecom functionality and membership area and I need it within 3 days. Would you prefer to code it from scratch or even using laravel or just use CMS like wordpress?

    If you know what you are doing, the beautiful thing about wordpress is that you are NOT stuck behind a theme or a plugin, then you can make your own theme or plugin, and change absolutely anything and everything to work and look just the way you or your customer want. And if you dont know how to code? well, then there is a shitton of themes and plugins to pick and choose from. But yeah, it is annoying when you see big agencies/companies "develop" sites and you can see in an instant that everything they have done is buy a theme from themeforest, rename it and pack it with a load of plugins.

    I'm currently learning wordpress development and I used to think there wasn't much "development" in it but there is actually a whole world of customisation possibility with wordpress development.
    I'll summarise based on what I know so far (this is when you're developing the website at the code level with php):
    1) ou can break up sections of pages and codes into separate files and call the chunk of code with a function. For example you'd have the header in header.php and then you call the header at the top of your index.php with get_header( ). So effectively you can make components/template parts.
    2)Wordpress has a template heirarchy. Let's say a user goes on the home page and then clicks on a blog post and then clicks on an author's name. In wordpress you can have home.php to instruct wordpress how to present the home page, single.php to instuct wordpress how to present a single post, and author.php to customise what the author page will look like.
    3)obviously you can create your own themes and plugins from scratch
    4) you can even customise the customiser on wordpress! You can code what controllers you want on the customiser and how to organise them under different sections.

    I think the "developer" in this story is really a content strategist or a content marketer. More of a marketing job than a development job. If a company is hiring developers and putting them in charge of the Wordpress implementation, they probably should have put a marketer there, instead (and the marketing team will be thankful for that). Meanwhile, they should be giving the developer work that involves building new systems or enhancing the Wordpress implementation, itself.

    I built a Wordpress site a few years back and was a total script kitty. I poked at the php and copy/pasted JavaScript and made it work together somehow, but pretty much had no idea what I was doing outside of the css. I used too many plugins and then was afraid to update them because it would break something else. Since then I learned JavaScript thoroughly from the fundamentals, along with react, node, mongo...and it’s much more empowering to build things from scratch. You can spot Wordpress sites a mile away. Unless you’re a ninja with php I wouldn’t consider trying to be a Wordpress developer. You can be a website “designer” in Wordpress without really coding much which is fine, but calling yourself a “developer” or “engineer” would be false advertising.

    I struggle with the views in the first part of this video. On one hand it's totally true, on the other hand Wordpress is no different than any development workflow. What I mean is, no developer builds 100% of their code. We all leverage code others have written to speed up the development process. Collaborative and open source code is really all wordpress plugins are, just with a visual interface. To me it's not much different than a git pull from a repo, stack overflow copy paste, or a Ruby gem install. Most developers who hate wordpress really just don't like php (which is understandable lol) or are unfamiliar with it. I do think the true drawback is wordpress sites tend to run slower in my experience, due to unnecessary code bogging down server response times quite a bit.
