Wordpress is a database management system and much more that small businesses can use to increase their market and customers. Personally I would use a theme and then customize it to their business needs. Why reinvent the wheel to design a new Wordpress site?

I'm a newbie I focusing on learning React, while I work a crappy parttime job, I dont want to really do anything with wordpress. It'll take time way from React and well all the WP jobs I see are with marketing companies not tech companies.

Wordpress is already restricting enough by itself and themes introduce even more restrictions. I bought a theme and tried to design a wp site 2 years ago. It was very convenient at first but it became a nightmare after a while because I had zero coding knowledge. Footer logo was shown as light even though I chose dark on settings. Why ? No clue. Have to ask the developer but you have to pay for support service.
So unless you find a theme which you want to leave as is for the most part, it's not worth buying themes as a person who knows nothing or very little about coding.

Great interview, definitely gave me more insight. What a coincidence, I just created my first ecommerce wordpress website for a company. Being my first job I did not know what to charge, and I think I definitely undercharged them. In the end I charged $1k for the website, I mainly wanted the experience and a solid reference.

    • @tylerbrown1457
      @tylerbrown1457 4 роки тому +6

I know this is an old comment but, did you charge that much using a pre-made theme or did you develop a custom theme? I'm trying to figure all of this out, whenever I read posts about what to charge there's never really a direct answer. What I've pieced together so far is that for a quick, small Wordpress site using a theme from somewhere like theme-forest you'd charge < $1K maybe even $500, e-commerce sites cost more, and custom themes are where you charge upwards of $5k.

I've seen this guy Sam on twitch before. Like months ago. Now he's randomly here lol. I asked him a few questions about web development and we had a nice chat. Small world. He told me about his process. The crazy thing is that Sam doesn't even know how to code. He uses builders. He didn't reveal this in the video though. I couldn't believe it when he told me. Makes good money, and doesn't code.
Edit: I was wrong lol. He codes a bit. Html and CSS. Before, I wasn't saying that not using code is bad or anything. I just was a bit surprised. Cause I was thinking that I didn't know it was possible to get to that level of high paying clients and large projects without code. If anything, if anyone can do that then they're a genius. I'm pretty sure there's people out there that have found a solution without code that works for them. More power to them.

I always say to look for the big projects, they pay better and understand better about respecting the scopes of the project, hence, they never ask for more, and if they do, they are willing to pay for that extra work they are asking for. On the other hand, they are better prepared to provide you with the info you need as well as pictures or texts you'll need in the process, that's something small businesses owners don't understand because they expect you to do everything for them, they even expect you to create the info from their own company, which you are not supposed to know or manage whatsoever.

You don't really need to know php to make a child theme. You just copy and paste a couple files from the main theme and make minor edits (plenty of instructions online). Then you can make edits to the site the same way you would with the main theme. All a child theme does is protect your work from changes when there is a theme update.

I call BS or an extreme case of fleeting luck. The WordPress developer scene is very crowded, with most developers willing to standup virtually any implementation of Wordpress (pretty much regardless of page count) for under $1000. A 50K Wordpress site (even with the extra services he mentioned) is almost unheard of and honestly not the best way to go for that kind of money. If it was a custom Magento build-out I could believe it, but still that would be about 35K above the going rates.
The truth is as a WordPress developer you can expect to make between $25K - $45K (per year) and that is only if you are very aggressive in your pursuit of clients. I've worked with dozens of VERY good developers, many of which were Senior Level and had 5-10 years of experience. The kind of people who can fix any problem you throw at them in 20 minutes during a screenshare, and can stand up a brand new site built from scratch in under a week. I don't see this guy as being the kind of person to be able to successfully pitch a 50K project to any business that will have confidence in moving forward with a project of that size with him.
My ex boss was a Sales genius and could smooth talk anyone, and even he couldn't get a business to commit to something like that. He owned a large video monetization site, and his brother owned a development company, the largest projects his brothers company handled were around $10K - $15K for custom build-outs (not wordpress), because that is the going rate for single site implementations, unless your dealing with a huge client who wants some serious custom dev work.
This video is either 100% BS, OR an extremely rare scenario, OR when he says 50K he ain't talkin dollars/pound. Maybe 50K in pesos or something.

The biggest take away from this interview is to always start with a high bid to feel out your clients.
-They say "I want a site that does this"
-Then you say "Ok that'll be somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000"
-Then they say "Oh wow..that's a lot more than I expected"
-Then you say "Well if you want to use plugins instead of a custom build, we can do it for about half that."
Just basically BS your way around the conversation to gauge your customers. Nothing you say has to be true, you just want to feel them out and get an idea of what kind of money they have access to. From there, each time they ask for something (regardless of how small, or easy) you add another $2500 to the price tag, and if they object, then you say, "well we could do it this way instead, and that would only cost $1250."
That is the method my ex boss used with EVERY SINGLE client engagement. He just BS'ed them the entire conversation (promising services we didn't even offer, and stuff like that) just to get them to bite on something and gauge how much capital they had access to. Also you can use this method to gauge how technical they are (how much do they understand about what you are saying). Then if they are not technically inclined you know you can BS them even more and extract more money from them. For some this may sound immoral and wrong. But this is actually Sales 101 and what will really surprise you is when you overcharge a client (according to you) and they are happy in the end and tell you how great you did.

I will share with you a Sales related story that happened to me once. I was working as an IT Manager for a large medical distributor. This company was so successful that we all joked that we were in the business of printing money rather than selling medical supplies. We got acquired by a much larger international company, and that company used our company to make additional acquisitions in the medical supplies industry. Word got out on the street that we had a lot of cash on hand.
So fast forward a year and I get sent out to newly acquired company to be the eyes and ears of their IT department and make sure nobody there is f***in us. After I'm there for awhile I need to head back home for a week. So we needed a local tech company to send in a Level 1 tech to handle daily IT tasks (like resetting user password, fix a monitor when it's not working, low level crap like that)
So I call up our contact there (a sales dude) and he quotes me $16,800 for one week to send one of their guys over (mind you their office was only 2 miles away from our location). Me having worked in the industry for 12+ years....my jaw drops...like wtf...$16K?!!?!!? for a level one tech to sit here for a week? (and not even necessarily sit there, but come over and fix a couple issues when they arise) (and these days most stuff can be done remotely) So I tell the sales guy ... "Wow..that seems like a lot." Then he immediately says "Oh sorry! I added it up wrong...it's actually only $8400. I flubbed up on the calculator." Then I'm like..."that still sounds like a lot..." So then he says "Do you mean you only need someone to just handle a couple of low level issues if they arise?" and I say "Yea, like I explained...a level 1 tech to reset passwords and stuff like that." '...then he says "Oh I got you buddy, we can do that for $4200."
And that is how it's done.

Hey Michael! Thanks for the reply. It was a 50k project we sold and not a 50k Wordpress site. We did a rebranding, we did marketing and we did a website (ecomm). We also had to work a couple of custom plugins for them. So, thanks for replying and no it's not bullshit like you say but just a product (a website+marketing+rebranding) we sold to help this customer expand and meets their goal.

I earn way too little considering I mostly always do custom PHP and Laravel (fullstack), know WP as well (but not the fan of it at all), did Angular a few years ago ( versions 1 and 2), familiar with Vue.JS etc etc. Considering a WP dev gets 100k ... I want 200k now :D
