I'm already intermediate but this video is awesome! Perfect for anyone just starting out and even plenty of info for more experienced riders 🤘🏾 thanks for putting this together!
what a fantastic buyers guide covering everything a new rider needs to know, I just wish this had been available when I started riding 10 years ago! Thanks for making it!
Had to laugh because I could have used this guide 20 years ago. I'm 6.3ft/191cm shoe size EUR 46/US 12 in combo with bad advice and no clue. Toe drag for days, wobbly as hell :D.
Great Vid Nev. To add to the binding talk...the binding stiffness is something to strongly consider as it makes a noticeable difference to how responsive a board becomes.
@@beamer_boi2995 the material the binding is made from impacts how stiff the binding is meaning how much it flex’s. A soft binding means you can move around and it doesn’t transfer every movement to the board and hence is not as responsive but more forgiving if your off balance a bit.
Ahhh.... this just makes me feel so nostalgic for my first season as a snowboarder when I picked out my own first board. Such an exciting new time of discovery.
been riding a 162 camber since day one and my only regret is not having a shorter board for when I want to goof off on blue slopes. on red and specially black the long camber is just a treat.

What a video. Just thank you. I am just getting into snowboarding and both of these guys are just perfect in terms of asking and answering my exact questions. The pure interest and excitement of them hypes me up and makes me wanna go out and shred. Thank you again form Hungary.
When I bought my first board, I just looked at the right length, width and graphics. Ended up with a stiff camber to learn it on. That was tough!!! Since this year I have a hybrid (C2x), much more forgiving and playfull indeed!
yup we all know our first board buying experience, just bought my first bord also, guy told me its good for beginners, but its a veary stiff board, mean while i had some test on some other softer boards and you notice the difference.
Awesome information! I haven't purchased a new snowboard in 16 years and things have changed and advanced so much. This video definitely helped me fill in the gaps and he had some great questions I hadn't even thought of. Thank you so much!
Wish I saw this before getting my first gear! I lucked out and everything works perfectly for me, my sizes and experience but this would've eliminated having to do a ton of research. Very informative and great dudes. Cheers! Be safe on those slopes, all.
So true, I must have spent over 30-40 hours researching before buying my first board after season renting for 5 years but I think I almost learned more in 30 minutes than those hours scouring blogs and sites.
Fun fact: The reflex bindings actually have a better Flex rate with the channel system then the EST's. + you can mount them on another board from another manufacturer.
I live in the southeast of the USA. I’ve snowboarded twice. Probably the most fun thing I’ve ever done, and I want to do it more regularly without renting. This video is very helpful!
Wish i had this level of guidance when i got my first board! Suggestion: Tim is falls in your typical rider height and weight. Should diverse this and find people who sit outside the usual height/weight for comparison e.g. smaller dude thats on the heavy side or someone tall thats on the light side. Someone that wears smaller size boots or boots that are 10+. Other than that perfectly well informed video and the guidance, explanation is on point!
@@joelrobles8714 Depends a lot on the board (each board has its own sizing chart that you should definitely check), but in general, I'd say "yes, too big".

For our first boards, my wife and I got cheap used boards for our first and second seasons that were intentionally a bit short and flexible for learning. Then we put out the money for nice boards when we were ready. It was cheap and we were able to hand-me-down our cheap boards to friends who wanted to learn.
great video on the essentials. iv snowboarded maybe 15 times over 4 years and i learned a ton from this video. always just got cheap used shit - this helped my make the decision to get some gear better suited to my riding style
Nice video but you don’t have to buy burton EST bindings to fit channel system. Many other bindings have discs that support both 4 by 4 and channel system. For example Burton reflex bindings and at least some union and flux bindings.
Can I make a quick comment on how messed up is the way Canadians measure when a person replies with: I weigh 82kg and am 6 feet tall... Hahahahaha PICK ONE PLEASE (METRIC). Video is, per usual, amazing. The circle is also an amazing shop.

The best explanation ever I had.. I'm intermediate. I bought a rocker camber beginner and I learn to much in just only one season, I can run at blue runs after 2 months, next season I'll buy a full camber because I like curves, carving.. I'm looking for Ride Shadowban or Burton Custom (camber) profile.. I'm not considering fly banana style..
for real man i been using the same discounted ass all mountains for 12 years, bindings about to rust off, straps permanently loose, we still shredding powder tho hahaha
i wish every seller was like him. Most of people in stores want to finish the job fast and if you ask too many questions they cringe. His love for the sport is obvious.
First season on my board, didn't know anything explained in this video, luckily picked a Twin tip, hybrid camber board the only downside is that i got a bit of large boots, they're larger than my regular street shoe size i wear. Maybe next year i get myself another pair just for the snug fit.

Fantastic video. Although i do feel bad for this dude.He didnt even get a chance to snowboard. The season had ended before my guy finished explaining the molecular structure of each individual snowboard.
Not sure if you've found anything thus far but in general you want 15,-15 (standard duck stance) if you're a beginner and have a twin or directional twin snowboard. If you have a true directional board (ex swallowtail) or a race board you might move your front foot to around 20 and back foot closer to 0. Some people go positive angle on both feet but I wouldn't try that until you can carve properly. If you're looking for stance width start at the reference and see how hard it is on your knees. If it hurts a lot move it in a bit. If it doesnt hurt at all you can widen it out (this helps to bend your knees, and generally gives better control of the board). If you have no friends often the rental shop guys will happily help you out, bring beer.
I googled the board that was picked. The capita Mercury. It seems to be a rock-camber-rock with 6.5/10 sofnes. It seems to be recomand for advanced snowborders. Any comment of that? From what I understand, as a begginer you need a bord that has be me a all Mountain, under the chin , soft(1-5), rocker or combination camber, but not a full chamber and true twin.
Thank you so much for this video! Most of the time the tips I found on how to choose a board were very vague and general and didn't explain much and I always ended up discouraged. This is sooo helpful.
Hmm. I don't know crap but I started on a rental my 1st 3 days and then bought a full stiff/pro all mountain Hetzel 158x (x=wide foot) and was happy. 6' tall, 170#, stiff board. Maybe a bit stiff, but good at speed and with hits. I'd had ski lessons, but I am cheap, if you haven't even had a ski lesson, take a lesson!!!!!! It will keep you out of the hospital, teach you some common sense and it's fun to see how much better a rider you are than other beginners, gives you some confidence to keep progressing, step by step. Back on topic: I think a squishy board would be forgiving, but I can't imagine needing that for more than a week.. why invest in that? A week renting would be good though, ask for beginner softer board, then maybe slightly stiffer, than try a stiff one and see... IF you feel it's right for you, go for it. Also, once you are riding complete runs on blues with confidence on your chosen board, get a real grind and wax, and learn to wax . Stone grind annually. Helmet. Helmet. Helmet. Leashes are cool, too. Don't be that guy. And get a lesson. It's a great way to get on the mountain cheap, package deal. Can even do a lesson at different mountains if you think it will help you. It will help you.

What board will do carving, and poppy for small jumps 180s sidehits. I like switch, and I need a good amount of torsional flex due to an old heel fracture. (Intermediate hard pack/icy) Thanks.☮️
I liked this video a lot along with the 6 parts of beginner sessions, watched all of them and they helped a ton, thanks a lot! I was wondering what type of board did you pick at the end of this video?
Good guide. Just a small note: 4 screws very close to each others is not really that much if any stronger than 2 screws that are so wide apart. The channel system seems to be pretty much indestructible. I am almost 100 kg rider that likes to ride it very hard (casual runs usually hit 70 km/h) and after around 8 years using channel & EST I have had absolute zero problems what so ever with those screws. If the board ever breaks, I guess a non-channel board is more vulnerable due to those holes of 4x4 or Burton 3d system, where as the channel system should even add some strength to the board, if it has any effect at all. I love how low my boots stay on an EST binding compared to any of the traditional systems.
Additionally, if you manage to break the threads of EST screws or the receiving end, you can just swap them for a new one. I haven't managed to destroy any of these yet, but I have done that in the past with 4x4 systems, and you pretty much cannot do anything about those if that happens.

Thanks for the video great information. I’m motion sick from the camera
