    I’ve seen so many videos of how to pick the size of your board and probably one of the best videos I’ve came across (I’m a beginner). But now after watching this video, the explanation and the details you give is really good. Most videos you look up tell you to worry about weight more, the reason I say this is because I bought a board (I’m 5’7” and weight 180) it was a 158cm and it was way to long for me. So Thank you for explaining it in more detail to start my snowboarding journey 💪🏽

    No mention on waist width, from someone with a size 12 us boot I struggled when starting off due to guides like this one. The common answer i used to get was to "look for 'wide' models", but there are many boards that do have a wider platform but not considered a 'wide' model. Ideally board manufacturers need to start advertising maximum boot size. At least YES (and maybe more) advertise their board width at reference point which is a HUGE aid for me and other like-footed riders.

      when I buy my new boards. I typically look at the effective edge, the waist width, and the contact length. When I look for a new board I usually find a few board length sizes that are within 5cm or so from what I'm used too or faily close and then I look at the Effective edge and waist width to determine if I can size up or size down. like OP said it also depends on board stiffness, what the board is going to be used for and your ability level. if you want to ride a longer length board then what's recommended for your height and weight then a mellow board that's not as aggressive or stiff will help out alot

    • @martykasa7864
      @martykasa7864 5 місяців тому +1

      Yep. That's how I shop. Waist width first, then the weight range... I don't even care what length it is.

    • @Natedoc808
      @Natedoc808 Місяць тому

      It also depends heavily on which boot model and which binding. Take a piece of cardboard and cut it to the waist width, then place your boot/binding on it and check how far you'd have to lean to drag toe/heel.

    I'm 6'0 290lbs, went for the first time a few weeks ago and I loved it. I decided to get my own gear to try and lose weight.
    I rented the Burton Photons SO and it was super nice for my lack of flexibility. Would a Burton Process 162W board be enough for me?
    PS: boot size is 13.
    Thanks for any input on this.

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  7 днів тому +1

      The 162W is too small for your weight. The Process is a medium-soft flex board and at your weight it may feel too soft and unstable at higher speeds. Look for 165W+ to 170W+ depending on the brand. A stiffer all-mountain or freeride board would be better for control and progression.

    Hey Matt! I’m 6’1”, size 12 shoe, and 180-185 lbs. looking at the Jones Frontier, I see two options that stand out: the 161W (ideal weight 150-200) and the 164W (ideal weight 170-220). I’m not sure which of these to choose, since I sit right in the middle of both. I love going fast and hitting jumps, however I don’t want the 164 to feel like I can’t turn if I’m going through moguls or steep terrain. What would you recommend?

    • @PeterGlennSports

      A 139cm could be ideal for more freestyle-oriented riding. It would be playful, easier to maneuver, and give you great control. If you’re doing more carving or all-mountain riding, you might want to go slightly longer for more stability, so something around 142-144 might be more optimal. Hello Peter Glenn and thanks for your video.
    I have questions since I watched your tutorial. I’m snowboarding for 10 seasons now and decided to buy my own setup which turned to a full nightmare snowballing lost of money.
    Firstly my boots went to a wrong sizing due to unscrupulous professional (1,5cm bigger than my actual size, thought I could trust. I trusted him because I always rode my all day shoe size). You know what happened next right ? Could tighten as much as I wanted the boots and had no support + unneccessary hot points.
    After that, I finally got the right boot size (27MDP : imagine going from a 29,5 at start to a 27…). I decided to buy a Nitro team tls pair of boots.
    Then it came to the board, I’m mainly doing slopes but I want to have the possibility to do whatever I can with my board if I feel like it (flat, Park, powder, side slopes, learn carving) and Mountains twins from Jones came as a good option. From my feet sizing and weight Jones recommanded me a 156W or 157. The only sizing I could get from my shop was 156W. My sizing is 178cm and weight is 75kg. I’m not so sure what happened after I bought thèse boots and this snowboard but I don’t feel confident on it, have issues doing good turns, falling for « no reason », can’t go straight on a Line, can’t take speed and so on (as a beginner again). Not sure if it comes from my bindings (Nitro phantom), my boots (Nitro team TLS) or board (Sizing or the board itself mountain twins jones). Maybe a combo of all of them?
    From your video (I wish I saw it before…) I should have a board around 160cm but how did I make the wrong choice respecting board tech…
    Can you give me your opinion on this that might help me for next season because I’ll have to do something anyways. My last 5 sessions came to frustration and sadness…
    Hopefully I only need to change my board.
    Thank you very much for your answer and work.

I have been riding a 163W board for years, but after watching your video on if I really need a wide board, I’m wondering if I need a wide board or not. I’m just shy of 6’3”, weigh about 210, and have a size 12 boot. I am looking at purchasing a new board this year. The board I am looking at is the Burton Instigator PurePop Camber. I would consider myself an intermediate rider, but I am a bit older now, and all I really do is cruise because I have had a couple of knee surgeries and my knees are getting old. I am a beginner/intermediate and my last rental (last year) was lower than my chin and it was my best season of boarding I’ve done 3 in total), but maybe that’s because I am becoming better.
    Do you think I have made a bad purchase? I did not pay attention to the chart and no one at the store told me that weight should be considered. It is my first board. I am so bummed that I cannot sleep. Thanks for helping me out of my misery. If you think that it will not work I will try and return it, but it was in a promotion and in Belgium they usually don’t take back items that were sold in promotion. Thanks a lot!

Look for a wide board as well, especially with size 13 boots, to avoid toe and heel drag. And since you're a beginner, a rocker or hybrid rocker board is generally easier to ride. Rocker boards have a more forgiving feel, which can help with catching edges less and making turns more effortless. Hey Matt! Awesome video! I'm 193 cm and I weight 86 kg and my shoe size is 12 (46 eu sizes). I really can't decide what size is good for me. That's my third year riding and I'm intermediate rider. I want to ride all mountain board, because I like to freestyle while going down the pistes, I don't want to specialize in one type of riding. For those 2 years, I was riding the same 168cm wide rental board, think the brand was k2 or head. Do you have any suggestions for a size for me? Or maybe a range of sizes for which I should go? I really would appreciate some help, thanks in advance!

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  Місяць тому

      Given that you’ve been riding a 168cm wide rental board, that size seems to have worked well for you in terms of stability. Since you’re looking for a more freestyle and all-mountain ride, I’d recommend a board in the 160-165 cm range. This will give you a good balance of stability for carving down the pistes and enough maneuverability for freestyle tricks and jumps. I'd also go with a wide at your weight and boot size.

      For a standard board like the All Mountain Twin that’s easy, the 160 would be your best bet. When it comes to pow boards it can be a little trickier as half are volume shifted so it really depends. One board you might check out is the Jones Stratos 159. Rad shape that kills it in the pow when you drop the bindings back in the “Float Pack” inserts, but it’s a surprisingly versatile board when the bindings are in a more traditional placement. Even as a freestyle ride it’s not bad at all. Check it out here ->

Last year I started learning with instructor some basics in the park - kickers and boxes. Nothing high and as I'm 35 and has some hips problems I won't be going for bigger ramps most probably.
    90% calc shows me I should go for 164 board, then if I'd consider going rather towards park boards and being lightweight I would drop this to even 158 size. Please let me know if you think that's good idea. I will be buing something on sales for 2025/26 from Burton with channel system (but not step on).

    What's your take on the importance of foot size in all of this? I'm 167cm, 79kg, but small feet for that weight - size 7 US, K2. It's pretty hard to find guidance online as a lot of riders don't even think of this as a point of consideration, even when responding in threads asking this exact question. I'm all-mountain, and have generally ridden boards a little over my chin. I enjoy the ride, especially on powder, but I have consistent problems with foot pain, often with the bindings being entirely the wrong size for my boots on the rental boards I'd get, and would spend half the afternoon sat on the ground dealing with cramp.
    I started trying a few boards just under chin height, and generally enjoyed the kind of control to effort ratio I was getting. Last year, I borrowed my female friend's board, barely above my shoulders, and I've honestly never felt so in control on packed snow, at the cost of a bit of speed. Problem was, we had a big dump on the last day of my trip and the thing obviously sank into the powder like a toothpick. Short of the obvious solution - buy (or rent) a separate powder board - do you have any suggestions?

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  Рік тому +1

      When it comes to board widths just make sure that you are not on a "wide" specific board. As for general sizing like Matt said in the video check out boards that are rated as a little stiffer than average. If you can find a board that is generally a bit stiffer than average for its size you will keep the mobility but not loose stability at higher speeds and it won't mush as much in the pow.

    How about where we ride. East coast groomers vs pow. How much sizing difference would we want lets say if we are 5'9 (160lbs 9.5 boots) and want a park board for that. Would we size down to 151ish territory or even 148? and what would that sacrifice? stopping ability perhaps I'm thinking outside of what you mentioned. (looking into the evil twin plus potentially or twin pig - would you say even going down to a 142 would be fine for that?) want to use it just for the park primarily and just started learning there this season so want something manueverable.

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  Рік тому

      When it comes to a "park only" style board its up to you as to how much you want to downsize. For your size I personally wouldn't suggest going smaller than the 153-155 range though. Just remember, smaller board = softer board. What you might gain in slightly easier swing weight you loose in pop and stability which is way more important. Specifically for the Twinpig you would for sure be able to drop down a little more as that is a volume shift board. It is only a 3-6cm shift though so the 151 would be your size. Check out this vid on volume shift for a great visual explanation-> ua-cam.com/video/4uehOtKStNg/v-deo.html

      @ I'd go with the 153-155 at first since you'd probably outgrow the 150 pretty quickly if you're just focusing on freeriding. Could be a little bit of a learning curve at first but the board is pretty user-friendly so you should progress well

    Hi Matt, I am 5'10 (178 cm) female, but on the heavier side (225 LB, 102 kg; edit: shoe size 42), I would like to try out snowboarding (as I live in Switzerland and have good opportunity atm).
    Based on height, I guess a 160 cm board would be good, however there is the discrepancy height vs. weight (and perhaps gender). Do you have 2-3 good recommendations for boards/models that might suit my needs as beginner (rather mountain area than park, more "relaxed" trying out and also later rather slower/"panorama"-snowboarding).
    Secondly, having slightly wider feet than smaller women, would you agree that "male" equipment is a better fit? Thanks in advance!

      With a Men's 10.5 boot you won't need to go with a men's wide. I would say the Arbor Formula Rocker Snowboard (Men's), Burton Custom Flying V Snowboard (Men's), or the Nidecker Escape Snowboard (Men's), I would say any size from 154-160 would be great for you.

    Good stuff Matt. I am thinking burton gril master. I am 5’10” 185 lbs. size 12 boot. Burton website put me in 155w. Size chart shows 160 could work too. The board is listed as a little more than medium stiff. Most of my riding is in midwest where the runs are not very wide, not a ton of powder, sometimes heavy traffic. I intend to ride this laid back slow with my kids as they are learning to ride this year. I initially saw 155w and was shocked but after watching your video 155w doesn’t sound so wild. What do you think?

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  Рік тому

      Up to you, with a size 12 you don’t really NEED the wide to be honest (video link below). Personally I’m about 5’11”, 195 and I ride the 160 in that board and thought it was great (also riding a Midwest resort). For the style of riding you are talking about have you considered the 158 Skeleton Key? That board is a little more playful and smoother riding but feels like a stiffer board when you need it to (video link below)

Shocked me considering how narrow and short it is. It is So easy and fun to ride. Trying to find a directional free ride board with that same feel if it exists. Hey Matt. I was looking to get a Capita DOA board. I am 5'5 and 190 lbs. Based off of the formula, it puts me at a 148, but on the Size chart for Capita DOA boards based off of weight it is suggesting at least a 154. However, 154 will bring the board to eye or forehead length. 148, 150, and 152 all state on DOA size chart 110-150 lbs. Do i goa based off of weight and 154 is ok or is 154 to long if it brings it to my forehead. What size do you think I should take. Thanks

      I would definitely go closer to the 154. Like was said in the video, if you are a little heavier for your height it’s better to fit the board based on your weight since that directly correlates with the flex of the board.
