    Couple things:
    First off, Ian Fleming (and by extension, James Bond) liked his martinis “shaken, not stirred” because he wanted them COLD. He specified that in the drink order long before he was dying.
    To that end he didn’t care what others thought about it. He was going to order his drinks the way he liked them.
    Secondly, Ian Fleming was never knighted. So he doesn’t get the Sir in front of his name.
    He should’ve been though. Both for his wartime service in intelligence, and his literary career writing the most culturally significant British hero since Sherlock Holmes.

    • @TheInfintyithGoofball

    • @jackanaples
      @jackanaples 2 місяці тому +2

      @@canaan5337 Ian Fleming definitely deserved a knighthood. For both his wartime service in British Naval Intelligence (which was incredibly significant but largely unknown in his lifetime), and later his writing of the James Bond novels.
      He died at 56 though, when James Bond was starting to get big. Sadly they don’t bestow knighthoods posthumously.
      I think you’re absolutely correct about Sean Connery’s knighthood being in part for James Bond. The Bond movies are among the cornerstones of the British film industry, and their initial success was in large part owed to his performance.
      EDIT TO ADD: I see I partly repeated myself months later. Sorry about that.

    On the amount of alcohol, 4 measures doesn't equate to 4 ounces but traditionally more to proportions, so the Vesper could be 1.5 ounces gin, 0.5 ounces vodka and a quarter ounce of vermount

    • @Mythilt
      @Mythilt 5 місяців тому +16

      Yeap, and as has been mentioned a few times on Glenn and Friends, a measure also depends on the what the creator of the drink considered a measure, before the 50's or so, a jigger might be 0.5, 1, 1.5 etc. oz's. And to make it even more fun, some earlier cocktail recipe books don't tell you what measure they were using.

As a bartender, I've made many martinis, including vespers, and trying to fit anything more than 3oz of ingredients shaken into a standard martini glass is nearly impossible without it spilling as soon as you touch it!

  • @mathieulefo6658

    It's a fun explanation, but at the end of the day the best ''explanation'' (if there is one for a fictional hero) I have found is simply that James Bond likes his drink like that. Colder, more diluted and with tiny shards of ice floating over the drink. He's a confident man and know what he likes to order.
    Also, little bartender tip/rant but Santi, that is not a shake, that was a mild wiggle. You really got a give a shake some heart, shaking over the elbow often helps for me. Contrary to what some websites say, shaking is rather forgiving in terms of dilution, as a shake of around 10-15 secs will quickly bring to equilibrium and most dilution will be over then.

    • @MissCaraMint
      @MissCaraMint 5 місяців тому +3

      I remember Mythbusters testing this one back in the day. There were definitely more shards of ice in that martini than this one. They even tested whether or not there was a taste difference after the ice had melted. Which there was. Yeah I think he just likes it like that.

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 5 місяців тому

      I once hear or read or someway „learned“ that Bond orders his Martinis shaken so bartenders remember him. That way they‘re more likely to accept Bond as a regular and more willing to talk to him about other patrons than they would if they saw him as a stranger.

    • @mathieulefo6658
      @mathieulefo6658 5 місяців тому +1

      @@PeteOtton Is it the quote with the rhythm of shaking depending on the drink?(haven't watched the movie, just a google search)
      I've never tried changing rhythm nor have I ever read or heard anyone in the bartending world speak of rhythm being important to proper dilution. I'm very doubtful rhythm has a considerable on the shaking, whats important is time and energy. When shaking, you're maximizing surface area of ice and cocktail, and moving the ice around so it can contact as much of the cocktail as possible, cooling it rapidly. Even then, as I mentioned before, the drink eventually reaches a temperature where ice won't melt much anymore.

    Actually, this is because intelligence agencies (in real actual life) use bar tenders as informants. And use specific drink orders as a kind of check in phrase. Bond is not only checking to see if the bar tender is an informant, he's asking him/her for any relevant intel.
    Also, it's likely Bond is using a number of techniques to not actually drink. Such as backwashing, which is sipping alcohol only to discreetly let it back into the glass rather than drinking it. Operatives use this and many other techniques to make themselves look like any other casual patron.

    Making such a strong drink less flavorful would have the effect of bringing the taste of anything that shouldn't be in there more to the front, letting Bond get an early hint that whoever's running the joint is already onto him.

    "Shaken, not Stirred" is also a short, memorable quote that serves as a metaphor for how Bond goes about in his professional life, one which is dangerous and full of suprises and quick turns.
    By taking him by surprise, capturing him or even torturing him, the villains who Bond goes against may leave him "shaken", but never "stirred".

    The cocktail is a metaphor for vesper, the love interest, which is why it’s named after her and also why the drink is only in that novel. The recipe calls for 3 ounces of gin and I ounce of vodka to represent vesper, a British agent, being a double agent for the Russians. I think it’s shaken, therefore, to represent her tumultuous conflict of allegiances as she’s conflicted with her love for bond and her loyalty to the other side. The whole thing is about the theme of the story.

    I figured that shaking a drink leaves just a little less opportunity to poison it. Plus, maybe it's just his experience, but in the Casino Royale film, he responds to the question without specifying... and then gets poisoned.
    Also. I kinda like the idea that he might SEEM all posh and suave, but really he's just a brute at heart. If shaking a martini is a faux pas, it's a cute little hint to the fact the man is a vicious killer.

    I strongly urge all to search here on Robert Hess and his videos on shaken vs stirred, and dry vs Sweet Martinis. Summary: shaking greatly effects the clarity of the drink, and Hess theorizes the first "Martini Cocktail" used sweet vermouth, and the "dry martini" was a variation using dry vermouth. Makes a ton of sense since a synonym for sweet vermouth is "Italian Vermouth" and Martini and Rossi is an Italian company.

    The truth is much simpler. In Casino Royale (which you should know as you quoted the book) it is specified that he usually drinks a long hard drink before dinner. The Vesper is exactly that, and he only orders it for theatrics, to seem fancier. Usually in the books he drinks whiskey and soda, not martinis, but when he does drink martinis he rarely ever goes into any specifics other than the fact that he wants it dry. Shaken not stirred is only mentioned in the Casino Royale and Goldfinger (the books). Thus your entire theory is just wrong, but he undoubtably an alcoholic.

    Very entertaining! Here's a little fact you might find interesting. My father, from the WWII generation, loved Martini's but he and most men his age that I knew, drank them from a rocks or Old Fashion glass, not the classic Martini stem glass. Why? They told me that the stemware was considered too foo-foo or hoity-toity, something only the spoiled rich people did. Besides that, they were also big fans of the Old Fashion and had that drink a lot too. So, one glass for both their favorite drinks. Remember, these were men who grew up in the Great Depression. They had to be frugal. Plus many of them lived in small houses where there wasn't enough room for a home-bar that could lots of different glasses.

    My personal theory is that James Bond is just as much a title as 007 at this point. That the original "Bond" being as active as he was during the cold was was frequently in the Sovit Union were the vodka was made with potato and similar to England wasn't being regulated very well, especially the low quality ones which could have included using spoiled potatos. Which could easily have led to AIT (Alcohol Induced Tremors) onset even earlier than from alcohol alone.
    That as renowned as the original "Bond" was upon his death it wouldn't take someone as smart as Q to think up the Captain Roberts treatment by passing the name on to an up and coming agent. That way the man, the myth can continue.
