Actually, this is because intelligence agencies (in real actual life) use bar tenders as informants. And use specific drink orders as a kind of check in phrase. Bond is not only checking to see if the bar tender is an informant, he's asking him/her for any relevant intel. Also, it's likely Bond is using a number of techniques to not actually drink. Such as backwashing, which is sipping alcohol only to discreetly let it back into the glass rather than drinking it. Operatives use this and many other techniques to make themselves look like any other casual patron.
@samuraijackson241 Well, this really isn't just my theory. There are actually a lot of theories around the Bond franchise. Like "James Bond" being a code name passed down to different generations of agents. And that MI6 is the UK branch of Majestic 12 and the use alien technology to power Bond's gadgets. There are even crossover theories with franchises like Harry Potter and Star Trek.

I'm surprised we haven't seen More James Bond theories on Game theory OR Film theory[Especially the latter; due to how many more People watch the movies compared to reading the novels these days]
Fun fact: A dry Martini [unmodified, or with orange bitters] that is shaken instead of stirred is technically known as a "Bradford" or "Bradford Martini".
I mean there's also the possibility that he's watering down his drinks to make it easier to detect if it's been spiked. Making such a strong drink less flavorful would have the effect of bringing the taste of anything that shouldn't be in there more to the front, letting Bond get an early hint that whoever's running the joint is already onto him.
As someone who does target shooting as a hobby, there is no way james bond would be able to hit anyone with a handgun if his tremor was so bad he couldn't stir a drink. My brother has a barely noticeable tremor (not from drinking mind you) and he has 0 accuracy with a pistol.
2:14 I've been having a difficult time getting back into these theory video's since MatPat left, so this is my first one since then. After hearing Santi say, "James Bond is dying, and I'll prove it to you" I knew these channels were in good hands.
"Shaken, not Stirred" is also a short, memorable quote that serves as a metaphor for how Bond goes about in his professional life, one which is dangerous and full of suprises and quick turns. By taking him by surprise, capturing him or even torturing him, the villains who Bond goes against may leave him "shaken", but never "stirred".

The cocktail is a metaphor for vesper, the love interest, which is why it’s named after her and also why the drink is only in that novel. The recipe calls for 3 ounces of gin and I ounce of vodka to represent vesper, a British agent, being a double agent for the Russians. I think it’s shaken, therefore, to represent her tumultuous conflict of allegiances as she’s conflicted with her love for bond and her loyalty to the other side. The whole thing is about the theme of the story.
Reminder: You are amazing!!!! One of a kind!! Literally one in eight billion!!!!!! And whatever you do, your gonna do it amazing!!!!!!! I know you'll achieve all your goals, because your just that awesome! Sending you hugs from North Dakota!
Oh, for sure. In one of the books he picks up a loose bottle of bourbon and guzzles from it in the middle of deliberately crashing a plane. It would be a shame to let it go to waste, you see. I read that and was just like, "Yep, that's Archer."
I figured that shaking a drink leaves just a little less opportunity to poison it. Plus, maybe it's just his experience, but in the Casino Royale film, he responds to the question without specifying... and then gets poisoned. Also. I kinda like the idea that he might SEEM all posh and suave, but really he's just a brute at heart. If shaking a martini is a faux pas, it's a cute little hint to the fact the man is a vicious killer.
I strongly urge all to search here on Robert Hess and his videos on shaken vs stirred, and dry vs Sweet Martinis. Summary: shaking greatly effects the clarity of the drink, and Hess theorizes the first "Martini Cocktail" used sweet vermouth, and the "dry martini" was a variation using dry vermouth. Makes a ton of sense since a synonym for sweet vermouth is "Italian Vermouth" and Martini and Rossi is an Italian company.
President Bartlet : Can I tell you what's messed up about James Bond? Charlie Young : Nothing. President Bartlet : Shaken, not stirred, will get you cold water with a dash of gin and dry vermouth. The reason you stir it with a special spoon is so not to chip the ice. I.E = James is ordering a weak martini and being snooty about it. :)
@@bostonrailfan2427 What did you think the point of this video was? It's about why James Bond takes his martinis shaken, despite how doing so is not approved of by cocktail snobs.
The truth is much simpler. In Casino Royale (which you should know as you quoted the book) it is specified that he usually drinks a long hard drink before dinner. The Vesper is exactly that, and he only orders it for theatrics, to seem fancier. Usually in the books he drinks whiskey and soda, not martinis, but when he does drink martinis he rarely ever goes into any specifics other than the fact that he wants it dry. Shaken not stirred is only mentioned in the Casino Royale and Goldfinger (the books). Thus your entire theory is just wrong, but he undoubtably an alcoholic.
an entire video about james bond and no mention of sir christopher lee, ian flemings legal cousin and secret agent who tracked down nazis in the alps after ww2 and is DEFINITELY the inspiration for bond. also he was the only member of the lotr cast to meet tolkien in the flesh, also he recorded a operatic metal album, also he was in a relationship with a swedish princess and even had the kings public approval to marry and become a prince, also he witnessed the last public execution using a guillotine in france in 1937, also i honestly think he's the coolest human being to ever walk the earth because he was gracious and humble to the day he died. rest in peace christopher lee

I watched a lost in adaptation episode and he said that it would dilute it and make it worse. And my immediate thought was maybe that's how Bond does all this despite being seemingly an alcoholic, all his drinks are watered down so he can still function while blending in.
I heard from somewhere that he has his drinks shaken because if he were to be poisoned, the poison wouldn't mix into the drink as well as if the preparer stirred it into the drink.
Vodka martini? God no, man. ALWAYS Gin. As a bartender, vodka martini is as bad as shaken martini. That said, I DO prefer vodka drinks, just... Not a martini o.õ P.S.: When I was learning, my teacher alawyas said: if someone asks for a martini, ask HOW they want it. No one wants it the same way xD
Anyone asks me how I want my cocktail made, or my sandwich or dinner or whatever, I always give the same answer: "Surprise me". The exception being if they ask if I want my whisky neat or on the rocks.

Very entertaining! Here's a little fact you might find interesting. My father, from the WWII generation, loved Martini's but he and most men his age that I knew, drank them from a rocks or Old Fashion glass, not the classic Martini stem glass. Why? They told me that the stemware was considered too foo-foo or hoity-toity, something only the spoiled rich people did. Besides that, they were also big fans of the Old Fashion and had that drink a lot too. So, one glass for both their favorite drinks. Remember, these were men who grew up in the Great Depression. They had to be frugal. Plus many of them lived in small houses where there wasn't enough room for a home-bar that could lots of different glasses.
After seeing Santi step foot into the world of alcohol I can think of a couple experiments I'd love to see. Stuff like which type of ice is best for shaking your cocktails on; which shaker makes the biggest difference Boston Shaker or New York shaker; how long does stir stired drinks; and other methods that haven't met a consensus. Personally I use a mixed method between each of the big cocktail UA-camrs
Before even watching the video, when you shake the martini, "which you are not supposed to do,"there is a layer of water on top, so James Bond isn't actually drinking the liquor.

That's an intersting theory, considering that my regular drink is an 8oz glass of hard liquor diluted into a liter of water. I'm currently drinking 8oz gin, 8oz vermouth, 8oz tonic water and filled with ice/water to fill a liter stein glass. I historically have drank wiskey in the same 8oz to liter proportion and I usually have more than one per night. My annual checkups since 2020 has indicated zero liver damage. My personal theory is that James Bond is just as much a title as 007 at this point. That the original "Bond" being as active as he was during the cold was was frequently in the Sovit Union were the vodka was made with potato and similar to England wasn't being regulated very well, especially the low quality ones which could have included using spoiled potatos. Which could easily have led to AIT (Alcohol Induced Tremors) onset even earlier than from alcohol alone. That as renowned as the original "Bond" was upon his death it wouldn't take someone as smart as Q to think up the Captain Roberts treatment by passing the name on to an up and coming agent. That way the man, the myth can continue.

I suffer from depression, you are not alone. I'm sorry for what you're going through, I don't think I can do it, but you have the opportunity to do it. It is difficult to understand and accept our own problems. And it can be even more difficult to explain them. But having someone you can talk to without them interrupting you or telling you that you're abnormal... helps a lot. My message, don't give up, there are many things to see, some of us are lost, but that doesn't mean you are. I LOVE YOU and I will support you in whatever you want to do. But don't become a supervillain, okay? 😅😅
You are also not alone! Don't give up mate, you can do it!

3:22 this, this is what I love in this new host era. The beef and collaboration between the channel hosts. Also whenever Mat makes a guest appearance every once in a while, like seeing an old friend.
the best thing about having 4 different hosts now is that they’re able to interact lol
Compare to the theory in the video, your explanation actually make more sense.
"Shaken not stirred" has to be one of my absolute favorite lines from any spy movie

2:58 I love how each channel has its own host now so we can get funny little moments like this.
As someone who does target shooting as a hobby, there is no way james bond would be able to hit anyone with a handgun if his tremor was so bad he couldn't stir a drink. My brother has a barely noticeable tremor (not from drinking mind you) and he has 0 accuracy with a pistol.

Watching santi get drunk pretending to be a spy😂. Love the episode
Tom and Santi feel like stepbrothers trying to up the other and i LOVE IT

Oh, for sure. In one of the books he picks up a loose bottle of bourbon and guzzles from it in the middle of deliberately crashing a plane. It would be a shame to let it go to waste, you see. I read that and was just like, "Yep, that's Archer."

Hearing Santi say “It’s all a TRICK, a RUSE, a SCHEME- SYNONYMS!” Makes me much happier than it should, lol💛
Is that last line hinting at a "i expect you to die" game theory. Would love that. Great game, fits the whole bond theme too
It is so satisfying seeing the theorists cover something that taps into your own personal research and clinical work!

I Still Love that Now Post MatPat, we have Wonderful Crossovers between All 4 Hosts and Content of the Theory/Theorists Channels!!!
Thus your entire theory is just wrong, but he undoubtably an alcoholic.
food theory the perfect channnel to watch while eating
Tremors might explain why he shakes his martinis when he makes them himself, but that doesn't explain why he also orders the bartenders to shake them.

So, 007 is just a mix between tf2's spy and demoman.
He got a point tho
I watched a lost in adaptation episode and he said that it would dilute it and make it worse. And my immediate thought was maybe that's how Bond does all this despite being seemingly an alcoholic, all his drinks are watered down so he can still function while blending in.
14:12 I expect you to die song plays in the background
I heard from somewhere that he has his drinks shaken because if he were to be poisoned, the poison wouldn't mix into the drink as well as if the preparer stirred it into the drink.
Vodka martini? God no, man. ALWAYS Gin. As a bartender, vodka martini is as bad as shaken martini. That said, I DO prefer vodka drinks, just... Not a martini o.õ
P.S.: When I was learning, my teacher alawyas said: if someone asks for a martini, ask HOW they want it.
