      For once? Most traditional dress for singles are flashier and unwieldy. Those styles usually can't be worn by married people because it's too difficult to do so while also handling the kids

      @@cyjicothis. Unmarried women usually and traditionally flashy because it's to attract suitors. While married women are more reserved, since they already settled down. The Chinese tradition is also like this, there's even married hair bun to signify "Married. Do not pursue." And there's normal unmarried girls bun that is more eyecatching and girlish to signify "Unmarried. Welcome suitors."

    I actually taught my high school Japanese teacher about Tomesode! It was an assignment about Japanese culture, and I decided to do it about kimonos, and he (a Canadian man who married a Japanese woman) told me he had always wondered why his mother-in-law wore a black kimono to their wedding, so I’d taught him something new!

    I would love to wear a furisode to a wedding but I don’t think I can put one on alone😅 I know there are tools to make it easier but I would probably have to find something like a dressing service? ( I’m not sure but I guess they exist)

    • @L22F
      @L22F Місяць тому +6

      They do exist, my dad married a Japanese woman and we had a big wedding in Japan including a traditional temple ceremony. I was wearing a beautiful very classic furisode.
      Kimono’s are very expensive, if they are not already in your family the only option is to rent on for that day. Including the renting is also all the accessories like the slippers and handbag and a team that will put it one. But also the day you look at everything and choose your kimono are in the price. They have kimono’s in different price ranges also! So it depends also on that what the price will be and also what kind of shop you go to. I went to a pretty luxurious and traditional store where my stepmom also rented her beautiful wedding kimono. I picked one of the most expensive silk ones they had by accident… The total was almost €1000,- for that day, in yen at that time around ¥100.000. So that was my total fit including accessories, a hair dresser who did my hair at the temple including fresh flowers in it, and a team of 2 persons who put me in to my kimono. And damn! I didn’t know it took so much time to get in one. I often dressed in a yukata, also can do it myself but I underestimated how much time and effort goes in putting on a kimono. It was also pretty heavy!
      If you already have a kimono and just want to hire a team to put you in one is also an option, at least that’s a lot more friendly for your wallet. My Japanese grandma was dressed in a black family kimono and brought everything herself, just hired a team to put it on.
      It was a really beautiful experience, one that i will never forget and I’m very grateful for. If you ever have the chance absolutely do it! ☺️

    • @masodemic4509
      @masodemic4509 Рік тому +2

      If you are getting them made then it’s extremely expensive. That’s why most people opt to rent. But even that is a hella pricey option.
      A good alternative is secondhand kimono where old kimonos are sold for much more affordable price points. But in secondhand shops, you will need to know what kind of kimono you are looking for and what function you’re wearing them to, as well as match the obi and other necessary accessories yourself.

    • @barbiebunnybakery1896
      @barbiebunnybakery1896 Місяць тому +1

      Usually you would buy the fabric bolt and then get it tailored to your size. From what I know tailoring usually is about 1000€/$ and as for the fabric: that depends hugely on the formality and how complicated the design is as well as the techniques used and how well known the artist is. You can buy older bolts for cheaper (50€/$ and up )and have them made into a kimono. If you’re quite tall and/or on the bigger side, a standard bolt might not have enough length or width for you. That might even be a slightly bigger problem on the second hand market. I am 168cm / 5 6 and I am too tall for 80-90%. That being said, second hand kimono, even really beautiful ones, tend to be very affordable in Japan. Flea markets start at. Something like 3-5€/$ but even resale shops are often between 20-300 €/$. Just be aware that an obi usually is just as expensive and you need a lot of other items to actually wear kimono the traditional way.
      Don’t be discouraged though 💜 I have a collection of 60-70 kimono (plus obi and the rest) and I am not rich by any means. If you buy second hand the hight for a woman’s kimono should be about the same as your hight and I would recommend to get your arm/ wing span ( straight arms 90° to your body and measure between the wrists) measurements. There are a lot of other measurements but those two are a good starting point 💜

    If I ever get married I'd want to do it in a mix of traditional Japanese and my own spin on American ones. I prob won't get married (I dont really wanna) but if I do I'm wearing a fuckin kimono and no one can stop me.
    I wore a Uchikake for a few hours and it took like so long to get dressed in it, and I wasn't really able to sit very easily without worrying about messing it up lol. But it was so beautiful it was worth it.

    Actually irotomesode have become so rare that even the sister of the bride wore just a gorgeous houmongi. (She was professionally dressed.) Not sure why they went for that. Perhaps it was an heirloom she loved.
    Nowadays you can call yourself lucky if anyone wears a kimono at all.
    And especially because I was pregnant at the time, I went for a wine-red silk iro muji (no pattern) kimono with a gorgeous fukuro obi sash. The bride's sister and I were the only one in a kimono.
    Ditto for the other 2 weddings. The Japanese were just super happy that anyone wore a kimono at all.
    And those strict rules for kimono wearing will be the reason why kimonos have been turning into better cosplay for coming of age and wedding ceremonies. Or clothes for a few geeks. It makes me so sad but that happens if people insist on traditions, no matter the costs. The only wafuku that will survive in the wild will be yukata because they were allowed to evolve and adapt to current needs.
    Btw. the way women are supposed to wear kimono is the way noble women with loads of servants used to wear them. Male kimonos can be worn without those many rules. They can have creases. You can wear fudangi (normal /daily wear) male kimono like a better bathrobe. And they are es comfortable as them, too.
    And now shops stopped offering even jimbei for women. The best compromise between enjoying beautiful wafuku patterns with absolute comfort. Japan, you really want to kill off your own culture.

    Huh, that's actually a really interesting guide to traditions! The variety is all so beautiful too.
    One of my only points of reference is the Splatoon series, a character returns after a timeskip in a kimono, specifically a grey one with a black garment layer on top (like an open shorter kimono, is there a specific term for it? EDIT; Haori!!) with the family crest. Does this suggest she may be married?
    (The character would be around early 20s)
    It's weirdly specific, but its the question that came to mind, I was wondering if there was significance to the design choice I was missing
