Agnes Moorehead was the star of that show - she WAS Endora! She had such charisma, and was surely one of the most iconic and glamorous women of the 'sixties.
It's great to see all of the people here who love Agnes Moorhead's Endora as much as I do. There was an exotic grandeur to her performance that was perfect for the show. I only wish that she had won an Emmy. She was certainly deserving.

No one can wear lavender and green like that than Agnes "Endora" Moorehead. She was known as The Lavender Lady. Her essence was very powerful on the show and off.
Yes Agnes had a stellar movie career going back to the 40’s in some of Hollywood’s classic films. She was very well-educated, farmed her family farm right up until she died. She was a woman of real substance and fine character.

Love Endora’s view on baseball as a metaphor for human life: “that’s a a human being for you. Spend their lives running in circles for a series of nothing!”
She was a good looking woman, and a powerful Shakespearean actress, with incredible range. Why do you think she made such a great witch? No one could cast a spell like Endora. Mother of Citizen Kane. The country woman invaded by tiny robots, in the Twilight Zone. Iconic actress in so many great roles. And yep, we loved her as Endora.
" INDEED!.... Back in the day, You had to ' know your craft ' . Agnes Moorehead also starred in the lead role of The Bat horror/mystery classic with the great Vincent Price. "
That was the episode where Maurice let Samantha borrow his amulet that made Endora completely agreeable. Darrin forgot to take it with him when he went to the kitchen, and Endora had found out by then that Darrin had been using it on her. She was pissed, so much so that she even punished Samantha for aquiring it.
Agnes Moorhead played the Endora character perfectly. No other actress could have played the part better. She was not only very funny, but elegant and classy. God bless and rest in peace, Miss Moorhead. ❤ 🙏
Totally agree! And especially with the original Darrin (Dick York) you got this great love/hate quality to the banter. You know that if the chips were down they'd probably put their differences aside and help each other. At the very least for Sam's sake :=)
@@jaymartin8273 : True dat! They are both so good in their characters that it's difficult to spot but a couple of times I've noticed how he's looked at her or her at him. Very charming
Agnes apparently only accepted the part as she thought the series wouldn't last and didn't want to be trapped by it and she wasn't overly fond of many of the scripts
As a mother-in-law, Endora was a better than Darrin's mom. I think Mrs. Stephens disapproved of Sam more than Endora disapproved of Darrin. I also think Endora did things more in the spirit of fun. And, she had to maintain her reputation among her relatives. She did once defend her daughter's marriage in front of the Witches's Council. And, she showed no ill will towards her grandchildren.
Still, Phyllis Stephens never turned Samantha into a pig. As for Endora and her grandchildren, it probably helped that both kids possessed witchcraft. Had they been mortal, it likely would've been quite a different story.
I think Endora certainly liked to stir the pot in her daughter’s marriage. At her core, she really loved her grandchildren, and Samantha’s happiness. While she didn’t exactly like Darrin, I think she at least respected him on some levels for his love of his family. I personally didn’t care for Mrs. Stephen’s. She often pushed her own agenda with Samantha, and belittled her. For example, she took it upon herself to sign Tabitha up for school without Samantha’s permission, or when she decided to hire a maid for Samantha before she had the opportunity to discuss it other Darrin. She had maids lined up for interviews before Samantha had the opportunity to discuss the issue with Darrin. Or when when she decided that Tabitha need better social interaction with other children, and decided for herself to set tabitha up for play dates against Samantha’s wishes. I would take Endora over Mrs. Stephen’s any day. At the very least, she was very transparent about her feelings towards Darrin, and she came to his defense on a few rare occasions.
I love that Endora is the actual hero of the show. Darin was telling his wife she wasn't good enough as she was. Endora challenge that and championed Samantha all the way, the nuances of bewitched is what makes it a classic
True. There was a subversive message in their dynamic. Endora constantly challenged the notion that the woman had to contort herself to be whatever the man wanted her to be.
She hated it. she didn't like getting up @ 4.45 in the morning. She needed the money to keep up wit her lifestyle. and she knew this was steady work compared to the stage.
This is fantastic! I loved Endora. I think she mellowed in the later episodes as Samantha and Darrin taught her about the mortal world. She was more sinister in the very early episodes. The time she turned herself into that tree would be horrifying for any kid. 😉 I'm also glad you included, Tabitha's Weekend! That's definitely one of my favorites!!! Dick York's presence was sorely missed. Thank you.

It is really hard to compare a sort of odd/eccentric supporting character (Alice Pearce as the first Gladys Kravitz) to a leading well-rounded character (Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens). But I share your love for Alice Pearce. Of all the hilariousness on that show, I thought Pearce was the best, even over Agnes Moorehead and Marion Lorne (Aunt Clara). It was really a shame that Alice Pearce died so soon after her run on Bewitched began.
