Either way Star Wars death star would be a research station or relay station lol Nothing more.
@@horrificpleasantry9474 That's true, but that's also precisely part of the reason why it's comparatively useless compared to standard Exterminatus weaponry; It slings an ungodly amount of power to blow up a planet using a horrendously oversized weapons platform whereas the IoM has fairly standardized armaments to get rid of a planetary population.
As a fairly new fan of the 40K-universe I have more or less scoured youtube for quality content on the lore. And I am only interrested in the lore, not the tabletop game as such. @@danielseelye6005 What makes you think I haven't checked him out? He has great content to be sure, and I'd say he's number two on my list of favourite 40K-channels. But he still can't come close to Luetin. But that is just my opinion.
"Heresy is like a tree, its roots lie in the darkness whilst its leaves wave in the sun and to those who suspect nought, it has an attractive and pleasing appearance. Truly, you can prune away its branches, or even cut the tree to the ground, but it will grow up again ever the stronger and ever more comely. Yet all awhile the root grows thick and black, gnawing at the bitter soil, drawing its nourishment from the darkness, and growing even greater and more deeply entrenched. Such is the nature of heresy, and this is why it is so hard to destroy, for it must be eradicated leaf, branch, trunk and root. It must be exorcised utterly or it will return all the stronger, time and time again, until it is too great to destroy. Then we are doomed. " - Galan Noirgrim, Master of the Ordo Malleus
“They are at the gates. In a matter of hours, they will be inside. We cannot stop them. There is no hope of holding this world any longer, nor is there any hope of escape left for my soldiers or the millions of innocents stranded within the citadel. I beseech you, in the Emperor’s name, do not let the foe repurpose our loyal flesh and blood to serve their abhorrent ends. ...It has been an honor and a privilege to fight under your banner, Lord Inquisitor. Now, do your duty and grant us His mercy. The Emperor Protects.”
I like this quote about why Exterminatus wouldn't work on Daemon worlds... "Unfortunately it's generally impossible to pronounce Exterminatus on a so-called daemon-world, since, being outside time and space in the conventional sense, tried and tested methods such as virus bombing are at best ineffective and at worst counter-productive; the last thing you want to do in such a case is give them ideas."
@@frodosfrostbite Glassing the planet would work at first, but only as a start in regards to Nurgle infestations -- what you want to do after that is to Death Star it once the entire surface is confirmed as having been sterilised. A two-stage cyclonic torpedo would do the trick rather nicely. A planet subjected to Exterminatus via orbital bombardment is still there, and can still be made habitable once more. But if you want to permanently deny the world to Chaos, that world should then be shattered and the debris strewn throughout the system.
I heard a rumor if you even say Disney you automatically get purged by either a loyalist guardsman or inquisitior then your entire world gets purged as well so no one else will ever say such heresy.
Remember the saying that goes something around the lines of how playing Chess with a Pigeon is pointless, as even if you win, he kicks all the pieces off and shits on the board? Well this is basically that in 40K form.
No it isn't, there is a very good, very well thought out, logical and solid strategic, mathematically sound thinking as to why you would pronounce Exterminatus on particularly any Ork, Tyranid, and/or Chaos infested world, and that is because most of these worlds just do not provide the requisite food, minerals, new IG recruits/human soul sacrifices etc. that would possibly justify attempting to take back and hold this world just in sheer cost of lives, materials, food, time and other vital resources which if you had wasted it they'd have never paid it back. Think about it as paying over a thousand dollars for an RX 550 in 2020 as a mining GPU. You'd have NEVER remade the cost in money over time by mining, you'd have continually drained some finances paying for the electric bill of running it and the pennies a day it would make you is never going to turn a profit before you're like 70 years old. And that is assuming no other invasion happens, it'd be like basically if Tyranids then later came and broke that GPU fan so now you had to take it to repair shop, now you have even more downtime not mining, and now the cost of repair and new fan becomes part of the overall cost to the GPU. Or like if you was playing a 4x game like Endless Space 2 and had just this one gas giant world in one system, it only has one planet, or a really paltry territory in Endless Legend or Sid Meier's something or other, which you'd basically have to spend a huge amount of imperial resources to just take the thing back and then spend all this time and money to be holding a thing that is basically not valuable and doesn't provide shit to your empire. There are no sentimental reasons for holding onto any of this shit, it's because you'd be the pigeon kicking pieces over and shitting everywhere by continually sending more IG troops to try and take back a pointless, dirt poor feudal world in spite of its tremendous cost to everybody else, which is exactly where the saying "some say by what right did I have to doom this world, but a wiser man would ask by what right did I have to let them live?" comes from, it is because in so doing you are wasting precious lives and resources that can go elsewhere. Not only that, but on any ork, tyranid, and chaos infested world that becomes just not only a nonstop headache in its own right but begins seeding contamination onto all the other worlds, thus because you suffered them to live you have guaranteed, in exactly the same way that the imperial governor's daughter brought down a hiveworld, that your mercy for a handful of lives have doomed millions. It's the same basic calculus as saying "they refuse to wear a mask going to the movie theater? They are contaminated, burn them all so we don't catch covid." Only if instead of a low % of lung damage you're probably going to have people coughing up rape demons. Therefore it makes more mathematical and strategical sense to simply burn to death EVERYONE who's not wearing a mask than bother trying to sort through who's contaminated or not, that's the basic role of the inquisitor, is trying to burn as few people/worlds to death as possible as a needless waste of resources but without accidentally missing any false negatives. It's a 4x game type scenario, it all comes down to just simple math. Exterminatus gets treated hamfistedly by pseudfans but it's not, it's a very sound, tactical and strategic decision that even in the case of a supposed madman like Kryptman was done for a very salient line of reasoning and a big part of this reasoning is that because these worlds are held only for the resources that they can provide, it becomes redundant trying to hold onto a world that provides little resources by continually providing a very high stream of resources in order to keep it, defend it, take it back and keep holding to it like some junk car you paid $2000 for an already sunk $5000 to repair bills, literally spends half the time in the shop, is unreliable, is all but guaranteed to just keep taking more of your money til eventually it gets to the point of being like "I'd have spent less money had I simply bought the $8,000 used car that didn't have problems than keep trying to fix this piece of crap."
"We have arrived, and it is now that we fulfill our charge. In fealty to the God-Emperor (our Undying Lord), and by the grace of the Golden Throne, I declare exterminatus upon the Imperial world of Typhon Primaris. I hereby sign the Death Warrant of an entire world, and consign a million souls to oblivion. May Imperial justice account in all balance. The Emperor protects."
It is human nature to seek culpability in times of tragedy. It is a sign of strength to cry out against fate rather than to bow ones head and to succumb. Inevitability many shall fault the hands upon the sword which fell Typhon, the Ordo Malleus. But the Inquisition merely performs the duty of its office. To further fear them is redundant; to hate them, heretical. Those more sensible will place responsibility with those who forced the hands of the Inquiistion. With some fortune, the may foster this hatred into purpose, and further rule their own fate by coming to the Emperor's service. Yet Ultimately it was I who set these events into motion, with a single blow from my hammer, God Spilter.
This is not criticism of you, Lutin, this is directed at 40k itself: >firing cyclonic torpedoes into pre-cut tears; blasting away continent sized chunks; torn apart by its own rotation. There is no part of that that makes any physical sense. >Virus bombs I did the math on this. The flammable breakdown products of decomposition are extremely light. So light, in fact, that in order for the atmospheric density of it to be able to burn the decomposition must happen so quickly that no flammable breakdown products could be produced in the first place. The rate of decomposition would be such that the thermal energy released in the process would exceed the ignition point of any and all organic matter. >breaking apart a planet with seismic charges The energy required to overcome the gravitational binding force of a planet is more than anything the Imperium has demonstrated to be able to bring to bear.
The Enslavers are one of the most interesting species in the 40k lore since they are biological entities that inhabit and indeed seem native to the immaterium. Not even the Tyranids have pulled that off yet.
There is a type of universal currency in the imperium though called crowns, though people usually don’t mention them much since a galaxy at war isn’t as interesting if you spend too much time describing how the rogue trader spent his money on grocery
A lot of currency and economic systems depend entirely on the planet you're talking about. On Necromunda, they have plain ol' credits that work like dollars on our world. On other worlds, they have feudal systems where landowning nobles are paid a tithe by their peasants. Some worlds or star systems don't even have anything resembling currency or trade. Either population is so small that everyone has everything they need/is subsidized by the Imperium (such as research stations), or everyone does what they have to in order to survive because it's a death world with man-eating plants infested by rape demons that's engulfed in a centuries-long civil war. Then there's Orks, who use their "teef" as currency. Tyranids are just animals who rely on survival of the fittest. Chaos barters in souls and infamy, with the Dark Gods granting gifts to those deemed most worthy. Then there's Eldar and Necrons, who have such advanced technology that scarcity is non-existent.
Inquisitor Kryptman was not only one of the first to notice the immense size of Hive Fleet Leviathan, he also noticed one of the largest Ork Invasions ever seen in the Imperium around the same time. With the help of the Deathwatch, he hatched an insane plan to get the two massive armies to fight each other and hopefully decimate each other in the outer rim systems so that the Imperial Navy had time to gather forces and resources to obliterate the victor. His plan backfired however, and instead the Ork forces and Leviathan grew even stronger and larger resulting in high losses of Imperial worlds and forces. In this record, he went into exile after being deemed a traitor to humanity for his actions and the Deathwatch was left to clear up the mess.
“The Emperor is a heretic!!! But then that makes us heretics for following his teachings…. WE MUST EXTERMINATE THE HUMAN RACE!!!! (Suddenly they become the new Daleks)
You know like I said with the above thread a post about the math of exterminatus, it would be an interesting exercise to determine which actual costs to the imperium would be worth it til those costs are worth it no more to take and hold Terra from its not just strategic and symbolic purpose but also from the Astronomicon itself. Which one could be argued, that due to that (and because of the fact Mars is next door too) that there is literally NO cost which is not worth ultimately paying in order to protect Terra, at least, it's a "saving the Princeps" type of thing to nth degree. Cadia was always utterly expendable next to Terra, and there is not one single chapter world that wouldn't be collectively sacrificed to save Terra not because of its high lord importance or strategic and symbolic value, but because the Imperium literally cannot function without the astronomicon.
That sounds badass. Shame that there's no information on what exactly it is and what it does, but it has to be like that. It's supposed to be a secret hidden from everyone, it's located in a Watch Fortress. Although from the name it is possible to determine what it does. It's most likely a huge vortex weapon( it's a weapon that opens a hole to the Warp and sucks everything in )that's meant to cause stars to blow up.
uff. i just binge-watched the whole playlist ( 40k lore/history in order ) over the last three days and i am very impressed by your work. before that journey, i didn't know much about 40k and i get the feeling that there is still a lot to learn. but i can now say that 40k is way more awesome than i ever thought of it. thank you for that enlightenment.

Inquisitor: [ Selects 'Two-Stade Delivery' and confirms ] Machine: "Praise The Emperor! The enemies of Terra will be purged in Holy Flame. Have a blessed day!"
Luetin09 for me is the best fiction commentator that I have ever come across on UA-cam. Appropriate music, exciting delivery, vivid, eloquent descriptions and most importantly the lore is on point (this is coming from a lifelong Warhammer 40000 fan)
everytime I think about this topic in 40k, I'm reminded that there are sooo many planets in this universe, esp habitable ones - I wonder how valid or prevalent this tactic really would be if such planets were scarcer? Human life wouldn't necessarily be any more 'valuable' to the Imperium, but at the same time habitable planets might be much higher on the list of priorities to protect
M0U53B41T Now you know why the Tau were horrified by the imperium during the Damocles Crusade. For the Tau, who’s empire is small to begin with, the loss of a single world is devastating. So when they saw the imperium just rendering worlds which they could not take uninhabitable, they were convinced they were fighting monsters, the idea of anyone doing this was overwhelming to say the least.
In another 40,000 years it would be more than possible to terraform the uninhabitable planetary bodies into habital ones as well. So the number of livable worlds will increase exponentially.
Luetin: the Imperium only considers Exterminatus in the most dire of circumstances Warhammer 40K memers: *got* *a* *heretic* *on* *your* *world?* *that's* *gonna* *be* *an* *Exterminatus* *pal*
Perfect timing! Loving your work Luetin. That last video clearly re-ignited your passion for warhammer, I had no idea about the difference and changes in 40k in regards to editions. My dad owns the space crusader board game and I used to play it all the time! Hearing all the random ideas/rules you can implement in friendly games is interesting; maybe do a video of your favorite mechanics in table top? Things that represent lore or the race/creatures well or just out-of-the-box ideas that are quirky and unique. Even if you explore 'under-dog' races that noone really knows about. I feel that games workshop is currently getting a second wind and I look forward to the expansion of the universe! cheers!
Dude this channel is freaking amazing… One of my friends played me some of your lore summaries while we were on a road trip and now I’m hooked on 40K. Bought myself Mechanicus for my Nintendo the other day and it is amazing. So.. I’ve also learned about Exterminatus. Hardcore stuff mate. Great work my friend 🤘🏻🔥
Luetin can exterminatus be enacted on a forge world even though technically a forgeworld isnt a imperium owned world? like when i think about it imagine an emperor class battleship crewed by the inquisition dropping cyclonic torpedoes on a forgeworld right in front of the adeptus mechanicus fleets above..... does this create a diplomatic rift between the factions???
Interesting question, I actually haven't seen anything to answer that personally. I think perhaps it may be a situation where only the Inquisitors could call that one, and even then it could ruffle some feathers. If anyone has a source that illustrates this situation I'd be interested to see it.
@@Luetin09 i bet the fabricator generals strongly oppose inquisitors rights to call that kinda stuff when forge worlds are in question. but yeah your probably right seeing as they answer only to the emperor himself, so essentially no one. :) haha
My guess is no world is safe from exterminatus especially forgeworlds because whats more dangerous to mankind a chaos controlled agriworld or forgeworld however i dont think any inquisitor would order it upon a mechanicus run world without first seeking permission from the cult itself or heavy plot plate armour in the case of a few because the mechanicus are simply essential to mankinds survival like water and air whereas the inquisition is a luxury the imperium can afford.
I bought a box of the old metal style ULTRA MARINES in 1995 ( which is still unopened ) and then lost interest before getting into the lore. Out of lock-down boredom I looked in 40K via UA-cam and was amazed at the raw amount of media dedicated to the franchise. I since have have delved deeply into the lore and have become hooked. Your channel is one of my favorites and I hope you continue for a long time.
A good idea for the imperium might be the idea of a contingency plan for all worlds with a sufficiently large biomass anywhere near a Tyranid fleet that is basically "If the Tyranids cannot be repelled, and have indeed won, push this button to destroy the planet." But setting that up woukd require a lot of co-ordination for the Imperium, and it's similar to the firebreak approach except with the added bit of "At least attempt to fight them first".
Admiral Spire, it is said that heresy is like a tree. It's roots lie in darkness while it's leaves wave in the sun. You can prune away its branches, even cut the tree to the ground but it will grow again, ever stronger. Such is the nature of heresy and why it is so difficult to destroy. Some may question my right to destroy a world of ten billion souls, but those who understand realize I have no right to let them live. No sacrifice is too great, No treachery too small.
Darth Vader: You cannot fight us,we have the Death Star that can one shot planet Guardsman: Oh that,we have that as a basic equipment of our ship called Exterminatus
Legends Emperor Palpatine after his first reappearance: That's cute I have a dial a yield weapon that can destroy a city or a planet from light years away.
The atmosphere from your videos alone are fantastic, then you add the actual well made content of the video and it is perfect! You are where I send anyone who wants to get into 40k.
Been hopping you’d do this one for a while Luetin!! This was one of the bits of lore that got me into 40k and few do the lore as much justice as yourself!!
I'm up to reading The Horus Heresy: The Burden by Loyalty now. Even though I already know how apocalyptic Exterminatus is, this book is giving me absolute chills. There's a part in the book where Rogal Dorn, Malcador the Sigillite, and the Fabricator General of the Mechanicum are debating on what to do about the Mars rebellion. Dorn is seriously (when is he not serious) planning Exterminatus on Mars and seeing overlord of the Mechanicum, Zagreus Kane's reaction blew me away. Even for the Mechanicum, Exterminatus is not for the faint of heart.
No one blinks when the Imperium annihilates entire planets to make a point but the moment a Chaos God crashes a ship into Cadia its suddenly the end times and everything is over.
Music, intonation and intention of the narrator, illustrations and the whole making a atmosphere that if both well done and thought. You really are an excellent storyteller for this Universe. If you ever do an audio work or already did outside of youtube, I hope I will be able to listen. In the meantime, thank you very much for your Amazing work Luetin09!
"It is human nature to seek culpability in a time of tragedy. It is a sign of strength to cry out against fate, rather than to bow one's head and succumb."
I highly recommend the short story 'Ghosts speak not' by James Swallow. If you like the Heresy era, there are a few nuggets of prequelness in there for the anoraks... Anyway, those in the know, will understand why I find this relevant. Love the work you do Luetin09. I'm 35 years into the 40k universe, and yet, a noob...
I love the idea of the beurocracy that has to deal with the aftermath of this, and 2k years later someone suddenly says "wait, let's not destroy it quite yet" and its takes another 300 years for that office to find out its already been done
Just imagine: The Imperium, spanning over a million worlds, could exterminatus one of its worlds every single day and take WELL OVER two thousand years to finish the task. Close to three thousand, if it's over a million worlds really.
Some may question my right to destroy a world of ten billion souls. But those who truly understand, realize that I have no right to let them live. No sacrifice is too great, no treachery too small! This is the reason I love the holy inquisition. They are basicly edgelords with the power to annihilate whole worlds *laughs in Kryptman* :P
Try to calm down inquisitor. I mean it´s not that long. I heard that orders from Astartezon or Ecclisiarchybay can take even longer and after all this is only...
I NEED those new glasses don´t you understand?! I can´t see SHIT through these! It´s all DARK!! These mindless walking snails gave me sunglasses when I asked for normal ones! nyyaaaaaah But you are right. I should probably calm down. The planet Tyran has not been responding for a long time now, and not just to me, but all communications. And as much as I need those CURSED... We will arrive at the planet itself soon and investigate about the reasons of such silence.
Some people just want to watch the world burn, but I think I can understand, it's for the greater good. *Inquisitor eyes his erstwhile companion coldly* Shut up xenos, yours is next.
I wouldn't apply Exterminatus to the target planet of a tyranid hive fleet. I would apply these planet-scouring bombs to the fleet itself. Send a Deathwatch kill-team into the ship and have them set off an environment killing ordinance inside. Norn queens can't birth life support of that magnitude.
Johnston Steiner well that would explain why everybody started screaming when those ships popped into the system, tell me, the inquisition wouldn't happen to know where the fuck I left my pen would they? Or do you guys just nuke planets, seems like a pretty sweet gig.
"only the dead have seen the end of war" - Not Plato (this is a partial text mentioned in several other sources). The only other place I would see this being quoted by Plato is at the beginning of R. Scott's movie Blackhawk Down. Anywhere else and you have other people using that same line in their own texts. A real example of the text "Yet the poor fellows think they are safe! They think that the war is over! Only the dead have seen the end of war." - George Santayana (Soliloquies in England, 1924). Sorry about my rant, and thank you for making these videos.

Well this is basically that in 40K form.
You can't lose if no one wins.
Kill the pigeon😃
God created demons; he also made us, and we must purge these unclean creatures
It is human nature to seek culpability in times of tragedy. It is a sign of strength to cry out against fate rather than to bow ones head and to succumb. Inevitability many shall fault the hands upon the sword which fell Typhon, the Ordo Malleus. But the Inquisition merely performs the duty of its office. To further fear them is redundant; to hate them, heretical. Those more sensible will place responsibility with those who forced the hands of the Inquiistion. With some fortune, the may foster this hatred into purpose, and further rule their own fate by coming to the Emperor's service. >firing cyclonic torpedoes into pre-cut tears; blasting away continent sized chunks; torn apart by its own rotation.
There is no part of that that makes any physical sense.
>Virus bombs
I did the math on this.
The flammable breakdown products of decomposition are extremely light. So light, in fact, that in order for the atmospheric density of it to be able to burn the decomposition must happen so quickly that no flammable breakdown products could be produced in the first place. The rate of decomposition would be such that the thermal energy released in the process would exceed the ignition point of any and all organic matter.
>breaking apart a planet with seismic charges
The energy required to overcome the gravitational binding force of a planet is more than anything the Imperium has demonstrated to be able to bring to bear.
The Enslavers are one of the most interesting species in the 40k lore since they are biological entities that inhabit and indeed seem native to the immaterium.
Not even the Tyranids have pulled that off yet.
When are we going to get the economics of war hammer video lol
There are snippets of how imperial tithing works. There’s no real currency as I understand it, you just do your duty for your emperor.
There is a type of universal currency in the imperium though called crowns, though people usually don’t mention them much since a galaxy at war isn’t as interesting if you spend too much time describing how the rogue trader spent his money on grocery
@@lynnusuk2092 I thought it was thrones?
Teef lol
Since when did death watch clear anything up? I thought that mess was still ongoing and he nor they didn't fix shit.

Cadia was always utterly expendable next to Terra, and there is not one single chapter world that wouldn't be collectively sacrificed to save Terra not because of its high lord importance or strategic and symbolic value, but because the Imperium literally cannot function without the astronomicon.

everytime I think about this topic in 40k, I'm reminded that there are sooo many planets in this universe, esp habitable ones - I wonder how valid or prevalent this tactic really would be if such planets were scarcer? Human life wouldn't necessarily be any more 'valuable' to the Imperium, but at the same time habitable planets might be much higher on the list of priorities to protect
M0U53B41T
Now you know why the Tau were horrified by the imperium during the Damocles Crusade.

:) haha

*Streatigic Value: **_absolute_*
My guess is no world is safe from exterminatus especially forgeworlds because whats more dangerous to mankind a chaos controlled agriworld or forgeworld however i dont think any inquisitor would order it upon a mechanicus run world without first seeking permission from the cult itself or heavy plot plate armour in the case of a few because the mechanicus are simply essential to mankinds survival like water and air whereas the inquisition is a luxury the imperium can afford.

A good idea for the imperium might be the idea of a contingency plan for all worlds with a sufficiently large biomass anywhere near a Tyranid fleet that is basically "If the Tyranids cannot be repelled, and have indeed won, push this button to destroy the planet."
But setting that up woukd require a lot of co-ordination for the Imperium, and it's similar to the firebreak approach except with the added bit of "At least attempt to fight them first".

Imperium: Our entire navy IS the planet killing weapons
May Cadia be remembered!
May we sing songs of glory!
Planets break before the Imperial Guard does!
The bit about Slavers was fantastic! Keep up the amazing content! Thank youu
Yea blowing up your planets in face of enemy is retarded
That is some Dark Dark Dark Devastation of any world that exist. However, so compelling the lore and content is to watch.
**The Inquisition would like to know your location**

Inquisition: What is this heresy?

Johnston Steiner well that would explain why everybody started screaming when those ships popped into the system, tell me, the inquisition wouldn't happen to know where the fuck I left my pen would they? Or do you guys just nuke planets, seems like a pretty sweet gig.
This seriously one of your best.
"last line of defense" alright fire
"only the dead have seen the end of war" - Not Plato (this is a partial text mentioned in several other sources). The only other place I would see this being quoted by Plato is at the beginning of R. Scott's movie Blackhawk Down. Anywhere else and you have other people using that same line in their own texts. A real example of the text "Yet the poor fellows think they are safe! They think that the war is over! Only the dead have seen the end of war." - George Santayana (Soliloquies in England, 1924). Sorry about my rant, and thank you for making these videos. Your content is amazing.
