Todays video is pretty personal, but I decided to film it because I think it is important for other girls out there to see that it is totally okay and normal to go to planned parenthood for birth control. With all that has been going on with birth control and politics within the last few years, I didn't really think too much of it because I wasn't affected by it. I never thought it was a place that I would go. But then I found myself in a place where I needed to start taking responsibility for my body, and get birth control. My first thought on where to go? Planned Parenthood. I was honestly pretty nervous and a little embarrassed about the idea of the whole thing. But, Planned Parenthood makes it so easy, accessible, and affordable to get the care you need. I'm really glad I went, and I hope this encourages you to feel confident in using birth control whenever the time comes that you decide you want or need it!

Something else to know: antibiotics shouldn't be used for the flu and the common cold. There was an interesting article about this published in Vox last year.
"Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. Colds and flu are caused by viruses. So taking antibiotics for these illnesses is an entirely futile and wasteful exercise.
But even more importantly, the more we take antibiotics - particularly when they're not necessary - the more we increase the chances of helping develop antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These "superbugs," as they're known, have become a huge public health threat around the world, killing thousands of people every year and, researchers expect, many millions more in the coming decades."

What many people don't know is that birth control can be used for other things besides preventing pregnancy. Birth control can help regulate your period. Women's health should not be so taboo.

daytopotato this is only true for certain people... I used to get periods every 2 weeks and they were heavy and lasted 8 full days. When I went vegan my period regulated after a couple of months and it became normal. However after 3 years (I’m still vegan) my period turned out of whack again and I get it every 3 weeks so sometimes twice a month. Still very heavy. There is no fix-all for everyone

You need to eat more fruits and veggies and release as many toxins from your body as you can. You don’t need to fill your body with a harmful chemical that blocks pregnancy just so you can have a clean face.
Throw out the dove and use hand made soaps and eat better food. Your acne will disappear in a week

daytopotato stop acting as if you know what this girl has gone through. I’m going to be 18 in April and I’ve had acne since I was 12 and have done EVERYTHING, ranging from natural remedies to seeing a dermatologist for 2 years to see 0 improvement. Fruits and veggies don’t work for everyone, or even most people when it’s more than just a few breakouts here and there. You’re not a doctor.

I first got put on birth control after a trip to the dermatologist!!! I had tried everything to try and help it and the doctor took one look and suggested it and my skin has NEVER looked as good as it does now!! Most people get birth control for preventing babies (which is obviously a plus) but after being on birth control for around 5 or 6 months now I've never felt more confident!! I had cystic acne and now I rarely break out! Birth control seriously has changed my life!!

    • @MadiJodiHagen

I've recently almost went in birth control- not to prevent pregnancy but to help control an overused hormone with my cycle as I had 2 periods each month for about 3 months. It has gone back to normal for now but if it comes back me and my doctor will re-discuss it. I think a lot of people think birth control is strictly for preventing babies but in reality it can be used medically.

@@obsessivefangirl5055 certain birth control pills are actually FDA approved to be used for the purpose of acne and generally does wonders for hormonal acne. Some birth controls can cause acne (I had a bad experience with my past iud - progestin only which can cause hormonal acne), but often times dermatologists will prescribe patients with birth control for the sole purpose to control their acne!

The nice thing about the pill for me was once your body gets used to it (usually by 6 mths), your periods are so predicatable. My period starts the same time every month (down to the same day during the week and between 9am and 12pm) and ends on the same day. No surprises!

I went to planned parenthood for the first time when I was 15 or 16 and it was super chill like you said. I highly recommend planned parenthood! For those who are under 18, at least in Florida, you don’t need to have insurance and it’s 12$ a month. They are also very respectful of the fact that you may not want to tell your parents, they have a lot of precautions to make sure no one will be informed of you deciding to receive care or prescriptions from them!

I recently went to Planned Parenthood for the first time and had that same nervousness that you did. I felt like everyone was going to judge me, even though I was just there for my annual pap smear and to get a new birth control prescription (I had previously gone to student health but I am not longer in uni so that wasn't an option anymore). There's such a stigma around going there, even though there shouldn't be. I think that so many people associate Planned Parenthood with abortions that a lot of people view it in a negative light. But it's been so helpful to me, and has saved me from sitting in outpatients facilities to simply get a prescription.

I’m taking the exact same one and have been for about five years. I experienced one period plus intermittent spotting for the first two to three months, but after that it stopped for me. I always encourage people taking birth control for the first time to make notes in their phone about how they’re feeling, frequency of possible side effects (headaches, mood swings, etc) so that you have info if you follow up with your doctor because it’s so easy to forget if you’re feeling fine during check ups!

I was on birth control for my skin since I was about 16 and stopped around 19-20. I never realised how depressed I was on it until I stopped. I went back on it around 21 and then off again and my skin broke out so bad. I made a decision for myself that I personally did not like the way it effected my body so I stopped. I know a lot of people who love being on it though! It really does affect everyone differently.

Monica thank you for making this video!!! It perfectly fits with the whole millennial life crisis theme. And was very genuine of you to make it , I’m sure it’s going to help a lot of people. The BIGGEST thing to remember is that what doesn’t work for someone, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you! And those annoying symptoms like irregular bleeding, bloating, and nausea should only last 3 months. I had all of these and it only lasted two and a half months so be patient with your prescription. I personally really like the birth control I’m on. I have Lessina 28, and my insurance covers everything but $5. But seriously Monica thank you so much for making this video!

Hey Monica, much respect for taking control of your life, being responsible is sometimes not easy, but it is the right thing to do. I waited until I was married, but that was my decision, and what was right for me at that time. Every female must make the decision about what is right for them, because it will be each individual who will have to live with the consequences. Just remember that oral contraception Does Not Protect YOU from STD'S, including HPV, oral cancers ect. The statistics say that for every sexual encounter is like you having sex with every person that individual has had sex with, and in turn every person that person has had sex with, that is a lot of multiplication; because you never really know who they were or their physical or psychological health. And yes oral sex counts within those numbers. Protect yourself, protect your health, and protect that innocent little baby who never asked to be born to people who didn't want to or are not capable of being a parent. Always be true to yourself, you are the only person who knows what you really want, trust your instincts, where there is doubt there is cause for more thought, and investigation. I am proud of you for taking action.

the best thing about birth control is there are so many different kinds! my first one was great in the beginning, but i was super emotional at first (ugh). eventually i just was having horrible symptoms and i ended up switching later to a different kind that makes me feel so much better! thanks for making this video, monica! this is definitely something we need to be open to talking about!

It’s astonishing how different the health care systems are in different countries. Here in Australia I went to get birth control at around 16 I believe (for acne), just made a regular doctors appointment with a general practitioner (for free), asked the doctor for the pill, and got the prescription all within the first 5 minutes of the appointment. It seems like such a complicated process in the US and I’m so grateful I don’t have to go through it

This was the exact same reaction I had as well, being nervous about the side effects and horror stories! I'm glad you've chosen to showcase it because other younger girls and women go through this too we just don't talk about it. PS I totally got extra emotional when on the pill, definitely messes with you a little bit but other than that it was a breeze after awhile. However, it's case by case for each individual :)

If you’re spotting/having periods in the middle of your pack it means your dosage is too light! If you go back to the doc and tell them this is happening they’ll put you on a stronger dose and that should regulate your periods.
And it’s awesome you’re talking about this! I fully support spreading awareness to younger viewers who may be nervous/clueless about birth control. Hope everything works out for you! And I also have noticed that since being on birth control I am wayyyyy more emotional and get really intense mood swings sometimes. Just a side effect of putting additional hormones in your body I guess :/

Thank you for this! I've been on birth control for over 10 years and it's been incredible. I'd much rather have a few manageable side effects rather than get pregnant. It's also important to note that not all birth control is the same. It took me 5 or 6 different kinds/brands of pills before I found one that really worked with my body physically and emotionally. Don't be afraid to go back to your doctor and ask for something different. It's your body and you have the right to speak up when something doesn't feel right. It's also SUPER important to remind women that especially once they become sexually active that it's important to get your yearly check-up with your gynecologist. Again thank you thank you THANK YOU for making this video.

How great that you make a video for this!
When I was 14 I got on birth control because I was dying when I had my period. It made the cramps go away a lot and it made my period duable. I used the pill until I was around 21, then I broke up with my boyfriend at that time and decided to stop birth control.
The pill gave me horrible mood swings and I think it made me (more) depressed. After I quit it a lot of these symptoms went away and instead of the pill I took a copper IUD. Unfortunately this caused a lot of cramps and eventually I got rid of it aswell.
It might be good to know for girls that if they don't wanna take hormons, the copper IUD is a very good and safe alternative and it will last you for 5-10 years! Plus you can't forget about it :)

I'm so glad you're normalizing these types of things and Planned Parenthood. So many people hate it because they think all they do is abortions when that's not true! Also, I would definitely try going back and talking to them about getting your period twice a month. On most birth control pills you're only supposed to get it when you're on the "sugar pill" week. My first type of birth control that I got made me have a lighter period about half way through the month then I would have a regular period when on the sugar pill. I talked to my doctor and she said that wasn't really normal so I was changed to a different type and that no longer happens! So I just thought you should know that and maybe go talk to a doctor about it :)

I had a horrible experience with birth control so I’m glad you didn’t get any bad side effects! I was on it for about a year, and decided to stop taking it because I was feeling so awful. Every time I took it I would get horrible headaches, I would be super nauseous, and the worst of all I became super depressed. I don’t have any major life stressors that could be the source of depression but while I was on birth control I was so depressed about every aspect of life, it was horrible. Now I’ve been off of the pill for about 5 months and I am back to my normal self. No more headaches, stomach aches or suicidal thoughts. So happy I decided to get off of birth control! When I took it, I was super emotional too and I would have a lot of spotting before and after my period. My first type was the pill from planned parenthood too!
If this happens to you, consider getting changed to a brand that tapers the hormone dosage. That took away all my side effects! Good luck! This will truly be a journey with lots of trial and error. I’m currently using the hormonal IUD and I’ve had a great experience with it, but I know a lot of people who have hated it! Like I said, everyones experience is different so you just have to try and see what happens.

    Yayy for this video! :)
Heres some basic info from a newly graduated pharmacist!:)
*the "Fe" component actually stands for Iron - there is a small amount of iron in the inactive pills
*Blisovi 1/20 is a low dose - there are tons of other brands with the same ingredient and strength and some that higher strength
*Main side effects for the ethinyl estradiol are nausea/vomiting and the norethindrone component may cause spotting
*There are rarer adverse rxns - I've seen them happen but they are super rare! (blood clots - so don't smoke while on birth control especially if youre over 35!)
*Yes some antibiotics can make birth control less effective - penicillin, amoxicillin, doxycycline, bactrim
    Hope this helps!

I started taking birth control recently as well and i know what you mean by getting more emotional. In the first two months it was so intense and I was crying ALL the time. Also I got really sick in the nights (especially in the first week). I was scared to talk to my parents at first (I´m 15) but fortunately they did´t make it awkward or something. I think that it maybe isn´t the best kind of birth control because you have to remember it every day and many people say that you stop growing but I believe that for younger girls it still is the best option. Oh and thank you for starting the conversation about this topic because it just is important and nobody should be ashamed of it.

Monica thank u soooo much for making this video and talking about this (especially PPH's services), u rock dude.
I have been on the same brand/dosage for about 5 years now and I love it. The side effects will eventually subside once your body figures out how to rebalance itself from the increase in hormone concentrations. However, sometimes I'll randomly get my period but I can usually attribute it to stress or missing a pill by 6+ hours. I was 16 when I first went to the gyno and I didn't have to have a pelvic exam done until I was 17 or 18 because I was originally prescribed to help with my acne after antibiotics didn't help. Planned Parenthood is awesome and so important for people who don't have insurance or don't want their parents to know. Don't be nervous, it's no different than going to any other doctor and they're only there to help you take care of your body and your needs! Also-yes some antibiotics may counteract birth control but this is why you always mention your BC as a medication when you see the doc and you can always ask either the doc or the pharmacist if you're unsure!

I love that you're taking about this. If you're having negative side effects that means you need to adjust the dosage or try a different pill or a different method. If you're feeling nauseous try taking it the opposite time of day. I experience some nausea so I take it at night that way when it peaks in my system I'm asleep and I don't feel the side effects. If anyone is still scared I think that means you need to do more reading and make sure your reading accurate information backed by science. Also make a list of your questions concerns and symtoms to talk to your doctor. I tried 4 different birth control pills before I found the one that didn't affect me negatively. Now I'm taking one with no Placebo pills so I get to skip my period and only have it 4 times a year. It also eliminated my hormonal acne. Thank you Monica, for making this video! You're helping young girls understand that this is ok to do.

Note to your side effects: it happens in the first few months due to your body regulating the new rush of hormones introduced. Hormones increase emotion, appetite, etc. With the periods if you get more than twice a month, or it is heavy/irregularly painful, please contact your female doctor. Usually it takes 3 months to a year for your body to regulate. Since you are on the lowest dose, it may take more time. You may also experience none to light periods later on. Just a lil food for thought

I started birth control at 15 and have been on ever since - its a very similar experience in the UK, so if anyone is nervous about it don't be - its super chilled out!

Thats the birth control im on :) but you messed up taking it. Your not suppose to just start taking it. You have to wait for your menstal cycle and chose "sunday start" or "day 1 start" Sunday Start cycle: Start your first pack of birth control pills on the Sunday during or immediately following your menstrual period. Thus, if your period starts on a Sunday, you start the birth control pill that day OR. Day 1 Start cycle: Start your first pack of pills the same day your period starts. I would talk you your doctor because this is why you maybe having two periods in a month or spotting.

lexieleighxoxo well actually, there is no instruction that says you can’t. You just won’t be protected right away and your period will take a few rounds to become regular

    • @lexieleighxoxo

Yes, there are instructions that say you cant. CLEARLY in the instructions that come will your birth control. I took that word for word out of my birth control packet which is the same as hers, I have also been on it for 8 years. If you do the day 1 start you are almost immediately protected they say us protection for the 1st week, for Sunday start they say use contraceptive for the 1st month. If you would like you can look it up on the birth controls website. ", take the first tablet in the pack on the first Sunday following the beginning of your menstrual period or on the first day of your period. If your period begins on a Sunday, begin taking this medication on that day. For the first cycle of use only, use an additional form of non-hormonal birth control (such as condoms, spermicide) for the first 7 days to prevent pregnancy until the medication has enough time to work. If you start on the first day of your period, you do not need to use back-up birth control the first week." www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-170653/blisovi-fe-1-20-28-oral/details its funny the website is word for word the same as the INSTRUCTIONS that come with the birth control.

lexieleighxoxo no. I use this birth control and my doctor said exactly what Mandy said. You can start whenever. Your periods will just be irregular and you won’t be protected right away. It’s the same for many birth control packets.

Avery Park thanks! I use this birth control and the pamphlet does not say you cannot. I specifically asked my doctor about this when I started. My mom is also a pharmacist and orders birth control on a daily basis and debriefs with patients. Some people don’t want to wait for their menstrual cycle. I, for example, use condoms with birth control, so I’d rather just get started right away. Spotting during my cycle doesn’t bother me (it hasn’t happened). nor is it life threatening. They just recommend you take it on day one of menstrual cycle for convenience and protection, but there is nothing that says you can’t. Literally, specifically discussed this with doc, and she gave me the okay and went over the pamphlet with me. Really wish people wouldn’t spread false info and tell other people they are doing things wrong just because it isn’t their way of doing things

All birth control is different. While yours may be instructed that way many aren’t. It also depends on the actually hormone as well. They all don’t provide the same hormone, that is why they tell you to use protection for the first week rather than after the first day like others.

I don't know if you can do this at Planned Parenthood, but be sure to go regularly -- once a year -- to a OBGYN. Find someone you like. Go every year and they'll test for STDs, check your breasts for lumps, and give you a thorough exam down there to make sure everything's good to go. It's a good time to ask questions and learn about your body.

oh my god I honestly was a little shocked that you just started birth control now... I started when I was 15 ... I think 23 is pretty late.... also, it is not so much of a big deal where I live, basically everyone takes the pill usually starting when they are 15 or 16 ...

I have an IUD called Mirena. Personally, I really like it. I agree that I am now so much more emotional. I cry so much! I was watching a video of two little dogs attack an intruder to protect their owner and I started bawling. What? I used to never cry. Since it is an implant (it does through your cervix) I did have spotting for about a month then it became, every so often, so about four months. Then I’m fine! I get my “period” but it’s really just spotting. I rarely get it though. Can’t remember my last.. maybe February? It shouldn’t be taboo to talk about! It is normal to be nervous. But hey, no babies right now is a good thing!

I have it too and i actually find my emotions are way more stable! I get bouts of PMS every few months, but i haven't had a period in a year and i am living for it. I only had 3 in the first 6 months and none since. I know a lot of people want to get their period as a reassurance, but i hated it so i am pretty happy with the IUD.

itsbribriii ugh I hated having periods! So I like not getting them. I got mine last April, haven’t had it for long. You’re lucky you have stable emotions. I feel like a mess when I cry because I see a picture of a dog! Then again, dogs are my weakness... and I work at a humane society... yeah I cry a lot.

Hahaha well generally i am an emotional person and easy to cry over happy or sad things, but the pill made them worse. Now i'd say my emotions are back to my normal level lol.

Kate Osaghae it depends what state you live in / country but Planned Parenthood gives it without a prescription in some states. You can buy online and they’ll deliver it in a discreet box within 4-7 days
