September 1984 - just turned 16, 1st concert with my first love. Always listening to Springsteen riding in his 73 Duster. This song hit a place in my heart, and now 40 years and a divorce later those 2 lines hit me so differently. ❤
I think one of the things that sets this performance apart from other versions of The River is his slumped posture and the visible agony in his eyes. The song of a man with his dreams trampled beneath the feet of life, sung as it should be.

I knew my girlfriend since she was seven and I was nine she was my neighbor. In 1980 when this song came out, I was 19 and she was 17 we dated. She was a shy, blonde haired, beautiful girl, and I came from a terrible background. I was the captain of the football team, pretty popular and pretty much a tough guy since I had to be due to my upbringing ,at 19 and 17 she was expecting and we got married. I had to drop out of college. She has become a stay at home mom as a baby her self. We got married like this song describes. I got a job in construction & a union card at 19 years old, we have now been married 42 years. It has not been easy, but we never quit. She is the most beautiful woman still inside and out. By the grace of God we are still together and have a thriving business . God is good. There are no mistakes in life just unexpected. Blessings!!!!

This is just one of those songs where you wanna drop to your knees and thank god you’re alive at the same time as Bruce. I’m saying this as an atheist.
I'm 53 and have seen hundreds of concerts, but the 3 concerts with springsteen are among the best. no choreography, no light show, no half-naked dancers, no laser show but pure energy on stage and a singer who doesn't act like a star and songs that tell stories. there are few musicians with such live qualities.
Here, here, and not one mother fucker sittin down, after four hours twenty minutes of Bruce and the E Street your lucky your worn out, rocked out body can get you to your car, limbs were literally like sgetti! definitely one of the top five shows of my lifetime!
just the 3? i have met fans at bruce gigs that are into the 300's. they do scare me a bit. i met an english couple before a concert in den haag netherlands, that told me they sold there house and rented and just follow his tours. that doesn't seem wise.
There he is. Just Standing ,no fancy clothes ,no fancy moves and with a mic in his hands takes a fantastic song and takes it to the moon. Sadly those days are gone forever. Well done mister Bruce!!Well done !
She was 18, I was 20. We don’t have a chance, too young. Never last... Now she’s 64, I’m 66. Still together, still in love, still best friends. Every time I hear this, I think of that young girl & I still get choked up.
"No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle No flowers no weeding dress". These words, always make me cry. it brings back memories of my wife and our wedding. 4.30 in the morning, standing next to her bed at the hospital, she was dying, with only a few hours left. There we got married. There was "No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle , No flowers no weeding dress". She died 7 hours later, I miss her ......
Well born in 98 in far East of Russia. I remember my dad taking us to the sea side with this tune on, i remember it as good as if it was yesterday. Some of his Americans friends in UNI handled him in Bruce's CD. Hed never stop listening to him. Now 15 years later i understand why he loved him so much. It all makes sense, dad i love you!
My English teacher in high school came into our class one morning, sat down, and played this entire album for us without saying a word. I'm eternally grateful.
Drunkly Romantic Man I had a teacher play us Simon n Garfunkel etc when we were like 11yrs.., we were ready n we understood... let us not underestimate our children 👍
OMG! I am a Chinese study in the US. 2009 I was in high school. One day my English teacher did the same thing. At that time I did not understand. But now I want to say thank you, my teacher.
My mother bought me The River for Christmas in 1980. It was the only thing I wanted. My mother knew how much Springsteen meant to me then, how it was such an anticipated album back then after Darkness. She died last February, will miss her forever.
+Boko Kotar Saw him two nights in Los Angeles this week. The band is still amazing. To bring down the Sports Arena, he played the River front to back and then a massive encore including Wrecking Ball, Rosie, Jungleland. 3 hours and 45 minutes, plus crowd surfing. He had Clarence's son, and Danny's son and daughter join on stage during 10th Ave. Freezeout. Who else does this for an encore after playing for two hours: Prove It All Night My Love Will Not Let You Down Badlands Tougher Than the Rest Because the Night Jungleland Thunder Road Wrecking Ball Born to Run Dancing in the Dark Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) Tenth Avenue Freeze-out Shout Bobby Jean
I’m 19 years old, I discovered this song a few days ago and I can’t stop listening to it. The story behind the lyrics is absolutely breathtaking. In the morning it brings me joy, in the afternoon it brings me romance and in the evening it brings me melancholy, and I’m so grateful for this.
You should listen to his greatest hits album or the born in the USA album if you liked this. A lot of songs with stories in there and yes, can't stop listening to them 😊
Finally saw the boss live and he’s such an machine. Playing 3 hours straight without a sip of water. He had always my respect, but now a bit more. A 73 year old man plays 3 hours with so much passion, amazing. Thank you Bruce!
I agree Saw him in 83 newcastle uk still got the ticket, States on front of it bruce springsteen and the e street band 3 hours no support. the mans a machine,
Saw him in the Camp Nou a few years ago after discovering him in my Da's vinyl collection when I was 9 or 10. 30 odd years waiting and by God he didn't disappoint!!!
This song is haunting, it has touched my soul since I bought the River album in 1980. One of the greatest songs of all time, by the greatest songwriter of the 21st century..
As a young kid, father somehow gave me this CD 💿 ( it was 1997-98 then, post war Croatia 🇭🇷), and I started to listen ,but I couldn't understand one word ,I didn't speak English back then. At the back of the cd, there were written all the songs and lyrics. I started to listen and read and use my mom's English dictionary to find the meaning of each word. Believe it or not, that's how I learned English, and later realised that Bruce was born on the same day as I am .😮 He's still my favourite singer...
My brother passed away suddenly a couple of years ago and this was his funeral song. I now have a 3 month old baby girl and this is the only song that settles her. Tried everything, different ways of soothing, different music, but only this song seems to do the trick. I think it’s a connection to my brother, well I like to think it is anyway ❤
The life of a 50 something man in a 7 minute masterpiece song from a 30 years young poet, artist and living legend. They don't make 'em this way anymore. I thank God every day this music is part of my life. Thank you Bruce Springsteen 🎤🎶~ 💘kimie
God , I drove my mother crazy playing this LP. We were in small town Australia early 80’s , but somehow this spoke to me. I think she really grew to love Bruce, RIP mum, love you.
This song is all kinds of sad: disillusionment, the lost of youth, dreams, and maybe your soul. I love this song so much, it reaches into the heart and pulls all the strings because many have lived this life. This is one of my absolute favorites, by any singer. No one else should ever sing this song.
Anyone who doesn't love Bruce's music must be crazy, because his music melts the strongest ice, makes the meadow bloom, heals the most self-absorbed soul, makes the world more colorful, and I can only say thank you for myself and for those who haven't written it here yet... thank you Bruce.
One of the best live performances of any song by any artist ever. This performance taught me that conveying feeling is a million times more important than singing technically flawless. And when you can do both, there's this.
My dad played this album so much when I was a kid that I could sing every song on the album by heart. This song was and still is my favorite. I grew up in a small town in Ohio right on the Ohio river. It has always reminded me of my parents and where I grew up. When I was young, I use to say to myself: “How did Bruce know so much about my life?” Thanks Bruce!
Beautiful. Philip I’m so glad you connected with your parents through Bruce ( and probably through many other ways). I think….my kids , and now even my grandkids, feel something similar.
My momma played it all the time as well! My sisters and I know it by heart. I will always be grateful for Bruce’s music. Small town girl from on the Ohio River too! Thanks for sharing your comment! ❤️✌🏼
@@GEOindustries0 he was done to a white t-shirt by the end, all soaked in exhaustion. The house lights went on and they lasted another half hour. They made him leave.
So much better than the studio version. Gut-wrenching and real, he evokes as much emotion with his harmonica as his voice. The band supports him in a beautiful way, and like all his music, it is the combination of his poetry, voice, and the amazing band that results in music that transcends.

Lived in a small northwestern logging town and married my high school sweetheart. 16 years and two kids later she left me and the kids. This was my divorce song. Sad, poinent, bittersweet.... those memories come back to haunt me. That was a long time ago. Life goes on. And I am grateful for each laugh, and every tear.
So sorry for your loss. But try to overcome that. People change. And sometimes what seems to be so sad turns out to be a good thing eventually. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Here in Brazil we sometimes say that some losses are liberating. All the best, Mila.
Chin up mate. I split with my ex when my daughter' was 6 month. She left me but she left me with (now) a beautiful 10yr old girl who's my best friend and my world. Every cloud and all that .
In response to the post below. I'm an English teacher and when I'm in the middle of a poetry unit, I use this song. to liven things up.. It, like much of Bruces' music, is poetry. I have a worksheet with questions and discussion points. The song is about a place where most people's joys and carefree days end after high school. You don't go off to college, you do "what you'r daddy done." When there is still promise in his life, it is referenced through green fields and flowing rivers, Mary is tanned and "wet" skin from the reservoir;. Water and greenery are symbols of life. At this point, he and Mary are so. close there is not even any physical distance between them- he holds her tight to hear her breath. Compare this to after the pregnancy, when there is nothing but physical and emotional distance. They act like they "don't remember" and "pretend that they don't care,'" yet he imagines the old days, riding out to the reservoir in his brother's car. The teenage paradise they were supposed to have for another year or two is gone, and notice the absence of life/hope: there are no flowers at the wedding and the river is now dry. Did anyone notice that there is not even a mention of a baby or momentary joy from parenthood? the ending of the song is very stark. The students in 2018 end up loving and appreciating the song. It's evident from their written reflections that most of them can relate. Music is a gift and I also end up using Bowie, Dylan, Sting,, U2, Run DMC and others. When you use music to teach, it does take some time to integrate it into the curriculum and make it meaningful/relevant. Maybe on the last day, I'll throw on the Springsteen Greatest Hits cd and say, "Just shut up and listen, Motherphukkers, it's the Boss!" Sorry I went on so long...
First To recess 💕😂I love it, yes!!!! You should def follow through with your last sentence! You're a really awesome teacher and cool cat! Lucky students!
First To recess I just replied to one mine used Simon and Garfunkel then Dylan to show us how beautiful language can be so thank you from a dumb bricklayer in WV
I’m only thirteen years old and this song has already inspired me so much. The meaning behind the lyrics and the way he expresses himself with such passion is heartwarming. One of the best songs ever
I think I was your age too the first time I heard this song. My Dad always taught me to listen to the lyrics and the story they are telling you. Bruce is one of the best at this. That's why he's the Boss. Keep on listening to the OMGosh can't believe I'm going to say this but the oldies. Another one you should listen to is Bob Seger...Fire lake. Don't ever just listen to one type of music.

Wow. That's one heavy story, man. Reading it while listening to this song just hit me straight in the heart. Maybe it's because I lost my sweet grandmother recently. Music brings people together. Stay strong, friend.
She be listening to your thoughts and dreams, , she be holding your hand when you sleep, I know. Keep the good fight going, keep the candles alight, because she knows.
mrpointer1 I am so sorry for your loss. Imagine what this world would be like without Bruce Springsteen in it. He would be the same amazing gift and precious gem that he is whether he was planned or conceived "down by the river". "It's a Wonderful Life".
The transition in tone when he hits the line "But I remember us riding in my brother's car", you can imagine the storyteller as he gazes off while telling his story, thinking back to that moment in his past. Gut wrenching.
The river offers a baptismal soul-cleansing. When the narrator was young it never mattered how bad things in life got because he (and Mary) could go down to the river and somehow that would make everything alright - at least for a little while. This is why the symbolism towards the end of the song is so damn heartbreaking. In the end even the river isn't there anymore. It dried up. Now there's no escape, no source of redeption for the narrator. You grow up and there's nothing that can make things right anymore. Springsteen is a pretty switched-on writer - and I think he's hip to the multiple layers of meaning that can be contained in a rich powerful song like this.
@@Buffon266 Hvala ti puno prijatelju. Meni osobno, "The River" je jedan od najboljih albuma, a slušanje pjesme the river ne mogu ni danas završiti bez suze u oku. Pozdrav.
Never really looked at the symbolism that way but I think you nailed it. She was 16 I was eighteen on my ninetenth birthday she delivered me a son who only weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces. The doctor who delivered him, not the one we had paid, told me he didn't have a chance. Went down to the NIC unit to see him before he passed but the nurses all hugged and guarented me he'd be fine and 6 weeks later we brought him home. Then we went down to the river and into the river we dived, He's a strapping young man 5'10 170# The marriage soon fell apart and I raised him alone from the time he was three. Then I met the most beautiful woman who wrapped her love around both of us and our lives were complete.
Bruce, thanks for picking up a guitar, thanks for picking up a harmonica, thanks for playing the piano, thanks for knowing what to do with a pen and pencil and black books, and thanks for sharing you and your band with the world.
Springsteen has given us decades of unforgettable music. But for me, that period book-ended by "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "The River" was the crowning achievement of his career. Those two albums, and all the live recordings in the two years or so between them, were like nothing before or since. And this song and performance encapsulate all of that in seven minutes of heart-breaking beauty. BTW, Roy Bittan never gets enough credit for his piano work during this period.
I agree. After Born in the USA, that was it till 1999s reunion tour. I was fortunate enough to see him in the 70s, and for the River tour. Almost met him at the Trade Winds. A nightclub in Sandy Hook NJ.
"These memories the haunt me, they haunt me like a curse" I always have to swallow back tears when I hear that. This song is following me since I first heard it when I was at highschool when this epic work first came out.
The River ist Springsteens größtes Kunstwerk. Darum Platz 1 in unseren Bruce Springsteen Top-10! Ps. 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 Hab ich bei googel entdeckt 🙏 ❤️
1965. The river was the Mersey. I was 19, she was 18. No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle No flowers no wedding dress..... 5 months later we had our first beautiful daughter. Now, nearly 57 years later, we still go down to the river.......

@@wisewoman2233 Thank you. There was never any thought of blame. We resolved to make it last, and it did. we have 2 daughters and one grandson, and are proud of all of them and their achievments. It takes commitment, love and selflessness, but mostly love.
I was about 15 when I first started seeing Bruce on MTV. I was too young to appreciate him then. But now I get it. And I get why he was called the Boss!
This is what the world needs more of. This performance is pure, and raw vulnerability, and Bruce looks like a man that would die, if that was what it took to get these words out.
Thank you, Bruce! I'm in the middle of my broken relationship and this morning your song came inzo my mind and I can't stop crying. All my life I've tried to break away from the patterns in my family, but I've failed. Life is so hard sometimes. So hard to keep an open innocent heart...
My oldest son was 11 when I took him to see Bruce. Its 8 years ago and we've seen a few other great bands since but he still talks about the night he saw Bruce Springsteen and how special it was.
My all time favorite song from Bruce Springsteen. That harmonica is haunting. Always has been and it still is. Even more so now. Thank you Bruce. You are the boss.
The harmonica in this cuts through my heart like a baby's cry. It does something on a primal level. You feel powerless, but all you want to do is make it better.
we all do in life it part of our constant learning. Listening to Bruce songs are different short stories that impact us romantically, spiritually, and real life.
My hero. I have all of his albums and I finally bought The Ties That Bind box set yesterday. It took me more than a year to be able to afford it as I have been unemployed until recently. My youth is passing and life isn't going the way I expected it too. At times I feel depressed and like giving up. Memories, good and bad, haunt me and make every day a struggle. Sometimes I need to go to a place that feels familiar and safe. Even if it isn't perfect. I guess the guy in this song had the river, a memory of the river sustains him even if by that point it was a dry, drained riverbed. He just needs that reminder of what good happened in life, a reminder that all the rubbish in life was worth the struggle. I guess we all have that place. For me, it may just be this music. This is my familiar place. My good memory. Springsteen writes songs that feel like lessons being given by an old wise friend. I just cannot get over the beauty of this song. I am glad I have this concert on DVD. As soon as I have time I am going to sit and watch this and be in awe.
Michael Smith you're not alone my friend, I couldn't have written what you did better, we all need that familar place whether it be music, family, friends or even a location. Just remember that it's part of the human condition (especially in these times! ) and that you will never be alone. Peace, love and cuddly stuff x
This song is so poignant and deep. Young dreams drowned in the river. The Boss knows how to sing the communal pain in such a striking,y intimate way. Thank you.
Still takes me back to my bedroom in Liverpool as a kid in '81 listening to both vinyl discs of the album for the first time, reading the lyrics as I went, thinking 'I've cracked it - this is what real life is all about.' Obviously I hadn't cracked it then [still haven't now!] but I learned so much about hope, respect, hard work, romance, disappointment, trust, friendship, etc that I've carried with me since and have helped on my own journey through life.
This was one of the first albums I purchased... I still remember ripping the plastic off of it ... hadn’t thought about Bruce that often or that album in many many years.. Last week I listened to it on UA-cam..... Now tonight I sit here watching this.. and it’s soothing my soul.. I lost my first son in a car accident Saturday night.. Thank God for music ... and Hug and Love your kids.... even when you are in discord.. Love them .. never thought this would hit home.. but it did.. God Speed
That's a BOLD statement, man, especially going up against live performances like The Who "A Quick One While He's Away" from The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus '68, The Eagles "A New Kid In Town" from D.C. '76, The Allman Brothers Live at The Fillmore, Little Feat "Waiting For Columbus," The Band "The Last Waltz," Frampton Comes Alive, Rush "Xanadu" Live '81, etc. And I didn't even mention The Beatles or Led Zep. Damn good, but THE BEST!? I think not... They didn't even perform this in the same key as the studio version.
It’s so much better live than the studio performance, he sings this with so much passion that u don’t necessarily feel on the original, as for the best live artists I’m guessing you haven’t seen pink Floyd or roger waters or Celine Dion or Cher or Bon Jovi or even Tina turner live n that’s just 6. I’ve seen about 60 artists live n believe me Bruce is one of the best out there
It hits the heart so hard, man. How many of us have been young, taking our young lover down to the lake or river because we were all too broke to do anything else? Just remembering those times is such a trigger for the goosebumps. If you never been there, I'm sorry. I'll always remember those times, coming back from the lake with my long-lost sweetheart, just fully exhausted from being in the water and sun all day, and driving back as the sun set. Now she's passed away 9 years, and I'll never return to the places we shared, like hanging out at the Red River, and Lake Murray, and Lake Texoma. The world is big and some places just hurt too much. "I know the river is dry."
I was on leave from the army been in Germany for two years asked my dad if I could borrow his car turned on the radio this song came on I pulled over and cried
40 years later, this song still brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. The first time I was in a live audience as he performed it was just 5 years ago, in Cape Town, and it was one of the most transcendent moments of my life. The power remains undiminished.
This IS the American Dream. The yearning, the desperation. It’s missing today. You deserve the best as an American. Don’t settle. That’s what Bruce is saying. We all deserve our dreams.
Me and Mary met when I was 23 and she was 21, got married 5 years later. 2 kids and 20 years later, we're still together. We had our river and when those memories come back it's only sweet and not bitter. I'm glad I've held on, it was one of the most happiest days of my life.
I get goosebumps listening to this! One of my favorite Springsteen songs, it hits so close to home! Instead of Mary it was Susan, her dad owned the company and the river was the Missouri. When she told me she was pregnant I married her and followed my dads footsteps and joined the local 10 Ironworkers. That was 1978, Angela was born in August 79, and Joshua in January of 81, and Shannon in November of 83. I was a full blown Journeyman Ironworker working the high steel all over the Mid-West. I grew up in that river valley and raised my family there, the kids had same of the same teachers Susan and I had when we were in school. It took many years before her old man finally took a liking to me. I worked my ass off making sure my family had everything they wanted, and to prove the world wrong! I was a successful and capable JIW that retired with full benefits at 55. I was able to pick up where I left off when it all started and bought an old 72 Chevy and lived another Bruce Springsteen song, "Racing in the Streets" Susan divorced me after 15 years, I shelled out over $250K in child support and stayed involved with the kids, still do. Angela's a lawyer now practicing in two states, Josh is a union Electrician, and Shannon married a rich carpenter. Me, I live with three girls in a paid for home with five Chevy's and two shops. The three girls are my cats that I rescued, Katia from the Humane Society, and Spooky with her sister Dusty showed up on my porch starving and nearly frozen..."Life is Good"
“Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true? Or is it something worse?” One of the most heart cutting lyrics ever written.
The greatest Spanish theater piece is called La Vida Es Sueño (life is dreaming) and the most important monolog in it says "dreams, dreams they are" 😊
Yup.. that's Bruce . That is how he rides. That is why we are here. I'm glad that you appreciate it.

I think one of the things that sets this performance apart from other versions of The River is his slumped posture and the visible agony in his eyes. The song of a man with his dreams trampled beneath the feet of life, sung as it should be.
Well said. Truth is Brevity. Brevity is the soul of wit.
I think a lot of the despair and anger came from Reagan having been elected the night before.
Probably because back then he was still 'near' to the roots of the song.

Here, here, and not one mother fucker sittin down, after four hours twenty minutes of Bruce and the E Street your lucky your worn out, rocked out body can get you to your car, limbs were literally like sgetti! definitely one of the top five shows of my lifetime!

Maybe on the last day, I'll throw on the Springsteen Greatest Hits cd and say, "Just shut up and listen, Motherphukkers, it's the Boss!"
Sorry I went on so long...
First To recess 💕😂I love it, yes!!!! You should def follow through with your last sentence! You're a really awesome teacher and cool cat! Lucky students!

Brutalno dobar opis...svaka čast! 👏

Well I will leave them then. I have never been trolled before but whatever. Keep going I don't actually care lol
The River box set: The Ties That Bind is a thing and I now own a copy lol
Oh wow how cute.
I'm honestly really not fat and I'm quite loved I'm just having a laugh reading your idiocy
This song is so poignant and deep. Young dreams drowned in the river. The Boss knows how to sing the communal pain in such a striking,y intimate way. Thank you.
Oh God, Bruce is magnificent and the Professor's piano is just magical.
Das sind Songs für die Ewigkeit. Gesungen von einen Künstler der Worte und des Sounds. Gibt es heute eher sehr selten. Bruce for ever.
Still takes me back to my bedroom in Liverpool as a kid in '81 listening to both vinyl discs of the album for the first time, reading the lyrics as I went, thinking 'I've cracked it - this is what real life is all about.'
Obviously I hadn't cracked it then [still haven't now!] but I learned so much about hope, respect, hard work, romance, disappointment, trust, friendship, etc that I've carried with me since and have helped on my own journey through life.
God Speed
Im so sorry for your loss
Steve Kutz peace to you
How sad.
Bruce has always stood alone with me. Bruce is unmatched in his Artistry.
I'm not American, but he is one of my the most beloved singers. This song and many other his songs are so beautiful and touching.
Dear God this is music form the soul, I dont know how Bruce wrote and sang this but it brings shivers down your spine and rips your heart out.
The best live performance in the history of rock music
I’ve seen about 60 artists live n believe me Bruce is one of the best out there
@@leonaharris5692 I`m guessing that seeing 60 artist live is nothing
"I know the river is dry."
wasnt cause we were broke, didnt need to do anything else
Good observation
I was on leave from the army been in Germany for two years asked my dad if I could borrow his car turned on the radio this song came on I pulled over and cried
God Bless Bruce.... for all he's done. 57 yrs. old and still a fan from a teen. Special talent and man.
This performance is absolutely incredible..
It makes me cry every time.
Feel the same
40 years later, this song still brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
We Brits were playing this in the bars in Bosnia.
es ist sooo schön , kein autotune , kein computer. einfach nur stimme und intrumente . ich beneide diese zeit der musik.
true
Sober lyrics for the working class, unplanned pregnancy, lost dreams.... No one writes lyrics like Bruce.
Yup to me the working class is salt of the earth because they don't profit off the back of others.
Bruce said in an interview that this song was a true story about his sister and her life.
My heart and my longing are not broken even after 62 years, thank you for this great song Bruce
Have never been to his concerts hope to one day I never seem to be near the gigs.
Hey ho keep going Bruce
Love listening and watching your videos.
L' avrò ascoltata non so quante volte, ma ogni volta ho gli occhi lucidi !!!!! Grazie Boss ❤
I saw Bruce Springsteen perform this album on the East Coast. This song from 40 years ago still is powerful today.
Same! Philly
Love this song always
Me and Mary met when I was 23 and she was 21, got married 5 years later. 2 kids and 20 years later, we're still together. We had our river and when those memories come back it's only sweet and not bitter. I'm glad I've held on, it was one of the most happiest days of my life.
The screen door slams and mary’s dress waves…
Bruce is the kind of man that makes you taste reality with his songs.
