I knew my girlfriend since she was seven and I was nine she was my neighbor. In 1980 when this song came out, I was 19 and she was 17 we dated. She was a shy, blonde haired, beautiful girl, and I came from a terrible background. I was the captain of the football team, pretty popular and pretty much a tough guy since I had to be due to my upbringing ,at 19 and 17 she was expecting and we got married. I had to drop out of college. She has become a stay at home mom as a baby her self. We got married like this song describes. I got a job in construction & a union card at 19 years old, we have now been married 42 years. It has not been easy, but we never quit. She is the most beautiful woman still inside and out. By the grace of God we are still together and have a thriving business . God is good. There are no mistakes in life just unexpected. Blessings!!!!

What a beautiful story to go with this song
My English teacher in high school came into our class one morning, sat down, and played this entire album for us without saying a word. I'm eternally grateful.
Love this song
Drunkly Romantic Where are you from ?
Drunkly Romantic if I don’t make it playing music for a living, this is exactly what I will do for my hopeful career teaching an English class

Man I had a teacher play us Simon n Garfunkel etc when we were like 11yrs.., we were ready n we understood... let us not underestimate our children 👍
OMG! I am a Chinese study in the US. 2009 I was in high school. One day my English teacher did the same thing. At that time I did not understand. But now I want to say thank you, my teacher.
“Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true? Or is it something worse?” One of the most heart cutting lyrics ever written.
The greatest Spanish theater piece is called La Vida Es Sueño (life is dreaming) and the most important monolog in it says "dreams, dreams they are" 😊
Yup.. that's Bruce . That is how he rides. That is why we are here. I'm glad that you appreciate it.
September 1984 - just turned 16, 1st concert with my first love. Always listening to Springsteen riding in his 73 Duster. This song hit a place in my heart, and now 40 years and a divorce later those 2 lines hit me so differently. ❤

Saw him two nights in Los Angeles this week. The band is still amazing. To bring down the Sports Arena, he played the River front to back and then a massive encore including Wrecking Ball, Rosie, Jungleland. 3 hours and 45 minutes, plus crowd surfing. He had Clarence's son, and Danny's son and daughter join on stage during 10th Ave. Freezeout. Who else does this for an encore after playing for two hours:
Prove It All Night
My Love Will Not Let You Down
Badlands
Tougher Than the Rest
Because the Night
Jungleland
Thunder Road
Wrecking Ball
Born to Run
Dancing in the Dark
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
Tenth Avenue Freeze-out
Shout
Bobby Jean

I'm 53 and have seen hundreds of concerts, but the 3 concerts with springsteen are among the best. no choreography, no light show, no half-naked dancers, no laser show but pure energy on stage and a singer who doesn't act like a star and songs that tell stories. there are few musicians with such live qualities.
Which are those 3 concerts exaclty?
Here, here, and not one mother fucker sittin down, after four hours twenty minutes of Bruce and the E Street your lucky your worn out, rocked out body can get you to your car, limbs were literally like sgetti! definitely one of the top five shows of my lifetime!

i met an english couple before a concert in den haag netherlands, that told me they sold there house and rented and just follow his tours. that doesn't seem wise.
@@grahammccready2647 I like Springsteen but I also like a lot of other musicians and I'm not a hardcore fan of anyone.
There he is. Just Standing ,no fancy clothes ,no fancy moves and with a mic in his hands takes a fantastic song and takes it to the moon. Sadly those days are gone forever. Well done mister Bruce!!Well done !

@@stevemartin6051 Thanks, I like the way you make me feel and so I would like for you to reach out to me.
I think one of the things that sets this performance apart from other versions of The River is his slumped posture and the visible agony in his eyes. The song of a man with his dreams trampled beneath the feet of life, sung as it should be.
Well said. Truth is Brevity. Brevity is the soul of wit.
I think a lot of the despair and anger came from Reagan having been elected the night before.
My brother passed away suddenly a couple of years ago and this was his funeral song. I now have a 3 month old baby girl and this is the only song that settles her. Tried everything, different ways of soothing, different music, but only this song seems to do the trick. I think it’s a connection to my brother, well I like to think it is anyway ❤

The fact that someone can stand there and open his mouth and make a song even better than a studio recording just blows me away.

a song about the realities of love and life for a working class man. how it can conspire to destroy you.
Lived in a small northwestern logging town and married my high school sweetheart. 16 years and two kids later she left me and the kids. This was my divorce song. Sad, poinent, bittersweet.... those memories come back to haunt me.

The River ist Springsteens größtes Kunstwerk.
Darum Platz 1 in unseren Bruce Springsteen Top-10!

My heart and my longing are not broken even after 62 years, thank you for this great song Bruce
Have never been to his concerts hope to one day I never seem to be near the gigs.
Hey ho keep going Bruce
Love listening and watching your videos.
Springsteen has given us decades of unforgettable music. But for me, that period book-ended by "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "The River" was the crowning achievement of his career. Those two albums, and all the live recordings in the two years or so between them, were like nothing before or since. And this song and performance encapsulate all of that in seven minutes of heart-breaking beauty. BTW, Roy Bittan never gets enough credit for his piano work during this period.
I agree. After Born in the USA, that was it till 1999s reunion tour. I was fortunate enough to see him in the 70s, and for the River tour. Almost met him at the Trade Winds. A nightclub in Sandy Hook NJ.
Truth
I’d put his first five albums against ANY band’s BEST five. Genuinely the greatest songs ever recorded
"These memories the haunt me, they haunt me like a curse" I always have to swallow back tears when I hear that. This song is following me since I first heard it when I was at highschool when this epic work first came out.
The best live performance in the history of rock music
That's a BOLD statement, man, especially going up against live performances like The Who "A Quick One While He's Away" from The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus '68, The Eagles "A New Kid In Town" from D.C. '76, The Allman Brothers Live at The Fillmore, Little Feat "Waiting For Columbus," The Band "The Last Waltz," Frampton Comes Alive, Rush "Xanadu" Live '81, etc. And I didn't even mention The Beatles or Led Zep. Damn good, but THE BEST!? I think not... They didn't even perform this in the same key as the studio version.
It’s so much better live than the studio performance, he sings this with so much passion that u don’t necessarily feel on the original, as for the best live artists I’m guessing you haven’t seen pink Floyd or roger waters or Celine Dion or Cher or Bon Jovi or even Tina turner live n that’s just 6. I’ve seen about 60 artists live n believe me Bruce is one of the best out there

So much better than the studio version. Gut-wrenching and real, he evokes as much emotion with his harmonica as his voice. The band supports him in a beautiful way, and like all his music, it is the combination of his poetry, voice, and the amazing band that results in music that transcends.
Thanks, I like the way you make me feel and so I would like for you to reach out to me.
Well fucking said.
I think the instrumentation from the band is amazing.
True that !!!
Still takes me back to my bedroom in Liverpool as a kid in '81 listening to both vinyl discs of the album for the first time, reading the lyrics as I went, thinking 'I've cracked it - this is what real life is all about.'
Obviously I hadn't cracked it then [still haven't now!] but I learned so much about hope, respect, hard work, romance, disappointment, trust, friendship, etc that I've carried with me since and have helped on my own journey through life.
thats so beautiful , i am a construction manager , love this song , miss the era deeply , maybe i should come from australia and work for you , such genuine expression , very rare

Lyrics:
I come from down in the valley
Where, mister, when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
When she was just seventeen
We drive out of this valley
Down to where the fields were green
We'd go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh, down to the river we'd ride
Then I got Mary pregnant
And man, that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday
I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
And the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle
No flowers, no wedding dress
That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh, down to the river we did ride
Yeah, yeah
I got a job working construction
For the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work
On account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care
But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet, down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
My baby and I
Oh, down to the river we ride-ide
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Up
He must have been riding in the back seat of my car when I was dating my wife. Its been 58 years for us being married and folks did think we would make this far. But here we are.
Here bank is not means which place teller works zzzbank means someplace stops the river

40 years later, this song still brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. The first time I was in a live audience as he performed it was just 5 years ago, in Cape Town, and it was one of the most transcendent moments of my life. The power remains undiminished.
The river offers a baptismal soul-cleansing. When the narrator was young it never mattered how bad things in life got because he (and Mary) could go down to the river and somehow that would make everything alright - at least for a little while. This is why the symbolism towards the end of the song is so damn heartbreaking. In the end even the river isn't there anymore. It dried up. Now there's no escape, no source of redeption for the narrator. You grow up and there's nothing that can make things right anymore. Springsteen is a pretty switched-on writer - and I think he's hip to the multiple layers of meaning that can be contained in a rich powerful song like this.
Brutalno dobar opis...svaka čast! 👏
@@Buffon266 Hvala ti puno prijatelju. Meni osobno, "The River" je jedan od najboljih albuma, a slušanje pjesme the river ne mogu ni danas završiti bez suze u oku. Pozdrav.
In short, Mr. Springsteen is one of our greatest poet/writers.
We need to hang out.
Never really looked at the symbolism that way but I think you nailed it.
She was 16 I was eighteen on my ninetenth birthday she delivered me a son who only weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces. The doctor who delivered him, not the one we had paid, told me he didn't have a chance. Went down to the NIC unit to see him before he passed but the nurses all hugged and guarented me he'd be fine and 6 weeks later we brought him home. Then we went down to the river and into the river we dived, He's a strapping young man 5'10 170# The marriage soon fell apart and I raised him alone from the time he was three. Then I met the most beautiful woman who wrapped her love around both of us and our lives were complete.
This is what the world needs more of. This performance is pure, and raw vulnerability, and Bruce looks like a man that would die, if that was what it took to get these words out.
You are right💛 I laughed at your last sentences.
Amen!!!!
Je n'aime que lui toutes ses chansons sont trop belles il me manque trop bisous à un ange
My favourite version of this wonderful song. Bruce is at his passionate best.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm 67. I saw Bruce in concert many years ago. He puts everything into his songs, performance n touches our hearts n souls. Thank you!! ❤
Me and Mary met when I was 23 and she was 21, got married 5 years later. 2 kids and 20 years later, we're still together. We had our river and when those memories come back it's only sweet and not bitter. I'm glad I've held on, it was one of the most happiest days of my life.
The screen door slams and mary’s dress waves…
Well, my Mary and me were 22 when we married. 43 Years later, we are still together. My parents gave it six months... :-)
Well done.
My all time favorite song from Bruce Springsteen. That harmonica is haunting. Always has been and it still is. Even more so now. Thank you Bruce. You are the boss.
No comment about the lyrics, Angela Lawson? PS: Greets from Jason Bourne :-)
Probably the best song ever written 👍🏻
Damn right
Imagine by John Lennon could argue that.
@@jimbarron8688 I don't think so
Bob Dylan though …
The harmonica in this cuts through my heart like a baby's cry. It does something on a primal level. You feel powerless, but all you want to do is make it better.
it indeed cuts deep
When i look into his eyes.. When he's singing feels me like he's telling the story which is true and all the past is right before his eyes!
Bruce is the kind of man that makes you taste reality with his songs.
2023.. still dont have a words. masterpise
My Dad’s parents were 17 and 20 when my Dad was born. This song chokes him up every time.
Who would have thought that a simple "Oooh oooh oooh" could be so beautiful?
One of most graphic songs ever written. Chilling in its beauty. ❤❤❤
I love this one to my bones, it gives me the shivers of how close and personal this masterpiece gets, to me this is the greatest ❤❤❤
It's amazing how he still sounds amazing live today, 36 years later.
Tienes toda la razón, Joseph. Una maravillosa canción incluso despues de tanto tiempo, Es que es Bruce.
lo mejor amigo , con diferencia, muy grande , el rio
lo mejor amigo , con diferencia, muy grande , el rio
Man, even Bruce looks like he's about to cry :(
The boss is tougher than the rest
Dear God this is music form the soul, I dont know how Bruce wrote and sang this but it brings shivers down your spine and rips your heart out.

God Bless Bruce.... for all he's done. 57 yrs. old and still a fan from a teen. Special talent and man.

Welcome to the magic world of music. Lots to explore and experience. Have fun on your journey!
Thanks, I like the way you make me feel and so I would like for you to reach out to me.
I am 55 and this song still is one of the best ever, sends shivers down my spine. Lucky me, I saw and listened to him live
God!!!! This is MUSIC!
I wish i was born in 70's... Golden Years!
Felt the same many times. When music was pure with instruments played by the bands muscicians. But I'm still torn though cause eminem is my biggest influence. But i appreciate the hell out of Bruce and bands like led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, mötor head, Guns and Roses, Iron Maiden, ac/dc etc. All those well known bands and old school music.
Glory days
Almost every time I listen to this song i cry, i cant't help my self. It feel so true, and then, Bruce is a working class hero 👍❤️
Das sind Songs für die Ewigkeit. Gesungen von einen Künstler der Worte und des Sounds. Gibt es heute eher sehr selten. Bruce for ever.
Every time I hear The River, it nearly brings me to tears. Such sad but powerful lyrics.
He puts his heart and soul into every song
Saw Bruce during this tour at the Spectrum in Philly, was going to see him again in Philly last month but now will have to wait until next year due to a cancellation. Have seen Bruce numerous times and I still am amazed by the energy him and the E Street Band have after all these years!
Did you see the emotions he put into that song? Thats why he's the BOSS
This is truly one of Bruce's great performances. Takes me back to the days when I'd go to the Boss' concerts with my old man. He introduced me to Bruce, oh how grateful I am.
