These small J-Frame style revolvers are completely relevant for personal defense. When you consider close quarters fighting, a revolver is by far the best firearm to have on you. If you have one of the top dog semi auto concealed carry pistols and you pull that out and make a contact shot on someone attacking you, that is touching you, you will get one shot at best before it malfunctions and in many cases you won't even get that one shot off because the contact is pushing your slide out of battery. Then consider clothing getting caught in the slide or it failing to cycle correctly if you do happen to get one shot off. All of these issues are NON ISSUES for a J-Frame revolver! That little guy will shoot every time and you can get all 5 rounds off while pressing it against the shitbag trying to kill you in rapid succession. Remember the 3 3's of a CCW encounter.....3 feet, 3 round, 3 seconds....that's the actual statistics of nearly all CCW encounters!
Just got my first gun after having lived in the United States for some 20 years. I'm originally from Holland and always had the Dutch mindset ingrained in me. Dutch don't carry. Over time I changed my mind. Sent off for my naturalization 2 weeks ago and went and got a S&W 642. Your comment about the 3 3's played a large part in that decision. Very well put and thank you from a grateful LEGAL immigrant!
I have found people who quote the “rule” of 3 3s use that rule to not shoot past 3 yards. I caution against using any absolutes based off of my own experience. I would rather practice and train for the absolute worst case scenario and then be tested easier. What do I mean? Practice creating distance, drawing under stress, drawing during an actual force on force scenario, and pushing the distance of my shooting ability while moving. Force on force classes normally eliminate a lot of the myths and ego wars out there. Everyone thinks they will get to their firearm in a fight and few do without training and practicing for it. Also revolvers are great but these non realistic scenarios of a semiautomatic firearm failing in the time you need it most is not as likely as many people claim. Also with the proper training and practice creating distance or shooting from retention will actually prove to be more beneficial than attempting to “press” it into someone.

S&W 442, Altamont grips, 125 grain plus P hollow points, 1 speed strip, Mika pocket holster. Ready to roll. Love the J frame. I have a Ruger SP 101, a few compact 1911s, a few Glocks, etc., I feel the most confident and comfortable with my J frame.
It's a good video but with a J frame the 642 I would replace the grips with the three-finger rubber grip you could find them on eBay for under $25 brand new and they work fantastic they really hold a gun when you shoot it especially with 38 + p J-frames been around
I carry a p365 most the time but i recently bought a 442 for exactly the purpose you mentioned. A lightweight throw in my sweats kind of gun, no belt or plastic holster required. While the j frame is about the same size as a P365 it nearly half the weight. Perfect for close quarters, point shooting situations. I think a j frame is sufficient for 98% of ccw happenings
For many years, I carried a full size, Sig 226 on my hip with my 638 as a pocket backup. As I got older, carrying such a beast got a little old. I retired my 226 and now keep it as my go-to for home and shove a 20 round mag into it and slip a light onto it. I ended up converting to the 638 as my primary on my hip and a LCP Max with a 12 round mag in my pocket. I don't feel weighted down anymore. In fact, I don't feel anything on my hip or in my pocket. They are both so light weight. Five on my hip and twelve in my pocket. New York reload I guess is what people call it?

Thx for your video. I think one has to be careful not to have a too narrow-minded view of what gun ownership and shooting is about. Certainly, self-defense is important. Perhaps very important in the somewhat unusual circumstance of having to use a handgun to fight off a violent attacker. However, given that there are many other enjoyable purposes for firearms and shooting, a person may find a revolver has substantial advantages. I have both types of handguns, and I can tell you that, for most purposes, I much prefer a revolver. The main reason? I handload and cast my own bullets. The last thing I want to do is have to search all over for fired cases after a shooting session so that I can recycle them into fresh ammo. Revolvers are excellent also for accuracy since many have adjustable sights, and for that reason are excellent hunting tools. They are also an excellent tool for developing loads for various purposes, which greatly benefits from handloading. A perfect example is the 10 mm round. I have 10 mm semi-autos and a Ruger Match Champion revolver in 10 mm. I use my Ruger far more than my Glock 20 because it offers me the most options for enjoyment of my shooting interests, and doesn't waste my time and money on trying to find fired cases that my semi-autos throw all over the environment. So, I guess you could actually say that a revolver pays for itself in a way. Every time I load up a box of 50 rounds of ammo, I've just saved myself upwards of $35-40 depending. About 20 boxes of reloads and I basically got my revolver for almost free. ;-)
You’re very correct Snub nose revolver’s takes lots of practice to master. I carry a S&W J frame model 940 , and a K frame model 64. The 9MM likes the 115 Gr, where’s the 38 like’s the 158 Gr LSWC HP +P.
With the J frame they also do very good on the ankle. Me personally I would never Carrie a revolver or semi automatic small of the back. Because if by some chance you go down on your back, that’s going to be very painful, it could cause some damage to the spine .
Luv my 642. Throw a few speed strips in my pocket and I am good to go. Yeah I still love my Shield 9 too. But don’t knock the revolver until you try it.

My most frequent EDC is my .357 Ruger LCR as it is comfortable in IWB Crossbreed, OWB Galco, or a Remora friction holster. I have had it about 10 years with no issues. Planning on getting something like the 642 or the 638 with the shrouded hammer as well. I also carry a Colt Detective Special I acquired recently even though it is 25+ years old if I want 6 rounds and SA/DA with a little more weight and a full 2" barrel in an OWB Thumb Break DeSantis. I carry either or sometimes both speed strips and speed loaders. Good advice about the grips. Thanks for the video.
Awesome and thank you for watching. For OWB carry you may be interested in the Craft Holster paddle holster I’m currently reviewing. How has the 357mag LCR held up? I am interested in getting one.
@@shootingitwiththesarge I have had it over 10 years and take it to the range regularly. Most of the time I shoot .38 Spl +P and usually carry Hornady 110 gr Critical Defense +P, though also have carried it with Speed Gold Dot Short Barrel +P, and Federal HST 129 gr. I do make sure periodically I shoot .357 Magnum self defense loads like the same Hornady just so I remember how it feels in case I ever had to use and without any gloves. Otherwise any extended (say 20 rounds + of .357 I shoot with fingerless gloves to avoid punishing myself. If you try to stack the trigger on the Ruger it can on occasion "skip"" a round, so it is important to pull through it decisively. That is jut my experience, however I would check with others who have owned it as well. I really like it. I'll look at the Craft Holster. Thanks, (I forgot to mention I have made a few videos on the Ruger, the Colt Detective Special, and the S&W Performance Center 686 2.5" on my channel if you are interested).
I used to pay attention to what the ww2, Korea, and name vets were carrying. Most of them also worked for local PD/SO also. 38S,357,45acp were their common go to and revolvers were the most common. Go ahead ask some retired cop what he/she carrie's. 9 out 10 are likely packing a j frame Smith they carried as a backup during their career.
Yup, 642 ProSeries in my front pocket as a Backup gun... no issues here. I like to carry the "old" 158gr SWC lead (when I can find it... or plain lead, if I can't), so yeah.
@@shootingitwiththesarge That's right. And that gistmo is really cool. It cuts the reloading time quite bit and I'd say it really compensates the "5 shots only issue"... even the spares loaded clips are easy to carry in "the other pant front pocket" or in a jacket pocket. I'd say it really gives the J Frame a new lease as a great backup gun.
@@shootingitwiththesarge Aren't they heavier than the 642? I mean a pocket pistol/revolver has to le lightweight to be carried. I use a semi auto revolvers for PERSONAL defense. If the first round fails? I pull the trigger again and roll in a fresh round. From 1 of the other (SIX CHAMBERS) Semiautomatically.
I DONT use a ONE CHAMBER 1 in the pipe, it better work the first time everytime, one at a time it better cycle from retention fire pistol for personal defense.
I have shot IDPA and seen dud rounds, limp wrist jams, short stroke Jams from friction during retention and clothing caught in the action causing stoppages.
You may not agree with me? That revolvers are t the BEST personal defense weapons but you're WRONG.
I do have weapons in my vehicle for community service duty.
Don't bother arguing with me I will NOT be moved. You're welcome. This was free.
@bali song
my clients all three ingaged at arms length. The furthest was across a counter at his place of business.
As far as being all over me I recommend not trying it.
Solid. I am looking at a SP101 or a SW 640 Pro next.
If thinking about using a controllable round then why not go for the tried and true wadcutter?
They are on the list
It's a good video but with a J frame the 642 I would replace the grips with the three-finger rubber grip you could find them on eBay for under $25 brand new and they work fantastic they really hold a gun when you shoot it especially with 38 + p J-frames been around
I used a set of Pachmyr Pro diamond grips. My issue was concealing them. The rubber grip would get caught to my shirt.
Training makes all of the difference with whatever someone decides to carry and how they carry it.
I own a 642 and a 442. Love them both.
Excellent revolvers.
( have both 442 and 642. Carry the 442 with Hogue grips in a shoulder holster. They work…..every single time. )
Awesome! I’m looking at a shoulder holster for mine. Which one do you have
@@shootingitwiththesarge It the Bianchi # 8R 1 Chief Sp.
Clam shell design, hangs upside down. Extremely comfortable.
( if you want to see a great picture of one that’s almost identical, look at some of the promo shots of Steve McQueen in Bullitt. The one he wears is very very close……however, I had mine FIRST !!! (:
Snub noses do NOT suck.
Alright.
@@shootingitwiththesarge I own and carry snub noses.
My 642 is my everyday back up. I’m looking at a 640 Pro next.
@@shootingitwiththesarge nice. I own a 642 and an M&P Bodyguard .38 no laser.
Same here love my my charter arms
I love my smith 638. It’s in my rotation.
I am surprised with how much I enjoy shooting and carrying my 642. It is one of my favorites for sure.
Love this compact revolver, from a great company with many, many years of rich history as a leader of arms development and technology.
It’s phenomenal
About 20 boxes of reloads and I basically got my revolver for almost free. ;-)
Awesome. I am getting the items to start reloading for my 44mag model 29.
@@shootingitwiththesarge You will be mighty glad you did.
I carry the 642 with the come with grips. I was hitting small targets and a good 7 yards. Its more accurate than people think
100%
642 is my preference as the hammer can't get blocked with clothing if it needs to be fired from inside a jacket pocket.
The 642 is awesome
You’re very correct Snub nose revolver’s takes lots of practice to master. I carry a S&W J frame model 940 , and a K frame model 64. The 9MM likes the 115 Gr, where’s the 38 like’s the 158 Gr LSWC HP +P.
I am a huge fan of Smith and Wesson revolvers. I’m currently looking at the Model 19 carry comp for my Everyday carry
The model 19 is a classic 357, the carry comp seems like it would be a real winner 😉
The Classic 19 is on the list as well!
The 642 is one of my favorite carry choices.
@@shootingitwiththesarge I take mine with me when I ride my bicycle on the Silver Comet Trail near my house, gives me peace of mind while I'm pedaling.
Very well done! I carry a S&W 360 PD for the same reasons you do as a back up, etc. My primary is a H&K P2000SK LEM or a Kahr P9. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! That’s a good carry setup
Great review. many thanks!
Awesome info!
All the retired cops that I know and current cops that I work with carry 9mm and 45acp semiautomatic pistols. I’m the only revolver guy.
I'm good with my revolvers m 36 642 856 605 RI 206. Carrying all of them definitely keep the revolvers.
I just picked up a model 64 from the late 70s and put some Stag grips on it from Grashorn grips.
Nice love to see 👀 it
It’s in the works. The day job is taking my time up
Yup, 642 ProSeries in my front pocket as a Backup gun... no issues here. I like to carry the "old" 158gr SWC lead (when I can find it... or plain lead, if I can't), so yeah.
The Pro Series accepts moon clips correct?
@@shootingitwiththesarge That's right. And that gistmo is really cool. It cuts the reloading time quite bit and I'd say it really compensates the "5 shots only issue"... even the spares loaded clips are easy to carry in "the other pant front pocket" or in a jacket pocket. I'd say it really gives the J Frame a new lease as a great backup gun.
I am looking at getting a pro series but leaning towards the 640 or 60
@@shootingitwiththesarge Aren't they heavier than the 642? I mean a pocket pistol/revolver has to le lightweight to be carried. I once carried a Glock 27 as a backup in an ankle holster, but I'm no longer young enough to find this kind of things amusing. I ended up carrying a Seecamp 32 as a backup in my front pocket, witch is at the oder end of the spectrum. But hey, only you know what's good for you. Stay safe!
I don’t pocket carry. My backup Guns are either on an ankle or my 3 O’clock. Same to you!
You might want to consider Buffalo Bore Heavy FBI load.
It’s definitely on my list!
I have a shield ez 380 a bodyguard380 a taraus856. Love all three still figuring out which I like best
I have not been a fan of the Shield EZ line up. For me the Glock 26, J Frame 642, and my Beretta 92X have been my go to EDC pistols.
I like mine but the glocks never did fit me right so I went with the s&w shield nothing wrong with a glock
Nothing wrong with the Shield. I have a couple videos out on my shield 45 and 9mm they are phenomenal. I just wish they had a parts availability like Glock.
@@shootingitwiththesarge agreed
First time seeing a video,subscribing🤷.
I'm in the revolver market & the grip tip was good information, thanks for taking the time to do this stuff.
-good job & keep it up Sir.
🤘
Thank you. Let me know anything video or information that you’d like to see on the channel
Just picked one of these up the other day. Looking forward to it range time if you can find ammo now a days. I have some underwood extreme defenders. Not range ammo for sure.
Great choice. I’ve been carrying Hornady Critical Defense and Winchester Ranger
What y’all think is a decent price for a used one with the crimson trace laser grip right now?
It would depend on how used. I wouldn’t pay more than $350-$400. You can buy brand new ones without the laser for $420-$480
@@shootingitwiththesarge Thanks for a super quick response! I’ve seen $477 online, but then ya gotta pay for the FFL to transfer, and pay taxes. My brother has one that his buddy is trying to sell for $400 and there’s no sales taxes on a private sale, and no fee to transfer for private parties in my state, so sounds like the price ain’t far off. Thanks again for the info!
Nice review.
Thanks!
I pocket carry 380 MP
but Ive been wanting this 642 beauty ✌🇺🇸
I have been beyond impressed with this 642.
I carry a j frame almost everyday
Awesome. I am hunting for a 640 Pro
I do carry a 642 sometimes qs a backup or even as a primary if I feel like I'm not gonna need a gun .my wife says ,oh you don't need a gun around here.but I said ,until ya do....
Wise words
Little j frams are amazing fire arms and will always have a place with experience shooters. It's not so great for some1s first gun
100%. I love them
Still love mine. Just so so easy. Side? Yep! Appendix safe for the snake & nuggets? Yep! Rocket in the pocket? Yep! I can carry others, but its so convenient. Ya got me thinking about the low grain ammo though.🤔
The 642 is great. I am on the hunt for a 640 Pro
@@shootingitwiththesarge Shes a heavy girl. May not carry like the 642. And in 357? Ouch! But hey! Theresa gun for everyone. And even better. Ya cant have just one. Lol.
100%. Why have one when you can have 100
Definitely on the appendix carry. 🥒
Everyone should carry a 1911 right?
No.
Is 460$ out the door a good deal?
I think anything under $500 is a solid price. Gunbroker may have a couple lower. But at a store where you can get hands on I would pay that price.
@@shootingitwiththesarge thanks brother I just did it :)
Awesome!
Be sure and look at Smart Carry. The J Frame disappears in basketball shorts n sweats. I’ve carried a J Frame for over 35 years as a back-up. Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods, even when doing lawn work, I carry. StaybSafe…….Another Sarge
I’ve seen some of his stuff. I have a lot more content coming in the future.
I dig the 637 airweight. Ahhhh that's my opinion I reckon.
That’s awesome. The 642 has been great for me.
442 is my every day
They are great revolvers
Good shooting, sir! My shooting with the 642 tonight is nowhere close. Even the sharp edges on the cylinder release rubbed the skin off my thumb tonight
It takes solid instruction and consistent practice. I would rather spend 30 minutes of practicing shooting accurately and consistently then 5 minutes of shots everywhere. Solid grip, sight picture and consistent trigger press.
I love my Glocks but the S&W 642 always makes its way into my pocket
It’s one of my favorites
I carry S&w 642
Great shot at 60 yrds
Thank you!
Only conceal carriers say or think “okay that person definitely doesn’t have a good on them” 😂
Long live the snubby!
It’s one of my favorites.
Are you related to Who Tee Who?
My revolver broke after 26 shots, no return phone call after a month. I don't beleive or trust in s&w quality anymore
What broke?
@@shootingitwiththesarge gunsmith that got the live rounds out said something with the clinton lock
My 642 and model 10 do not have the lock. My model 29 does and I have around 200 44 Magnum rounds through it and roughly 150 44 special rounds through it without an issue. I called S&W about a month ago to order a new frame pin and they sent it for free so I do not know of any issues with their customer service.
This is my primary off duty carry. Can’t go wrong with a J-frame.
Great choice.
J frame > chunking rocks
Alright
Long live the snubby!
