  • The UK throws away an estimated 1.7 billion pieces of plastic every week, and Greenpeace says it is "out of control".
The campaign group is warning that plastic recycling will never be able to catch up with the amount of waste being produced.
Greenpeace wants the government and supermarkets to commit to a legally binding target, to reduce plastic production by at least 75% by 2040.

I've used the same six plastic bags for the past 25 years. They're made from old cement sacks that I bought in Zimbabwe as a fun souvenir. The supermarkets should just ban plastic bags outright. Another sustainable solution from African countries are 'milk ATM's' with the customer filling their own glass bottles from a machine.

Wrap four apples in a plastic!! What's wrong having them in a wooden box and get them individually?

So, what's Greenpeace's alternative to plastic? Is it carrying out or supporting any research into recycling these more difficult plastics?
Nope they've got nothing. All they say is 'Ban it!' because that's the easy answer, not the useful one.

There's many alternatives already. There's several start ups and established sellers in the US who figured it out for many products. Biodegradable and compostable containers are popping up everywhere. I just got chines takeout in a compostable container. There's refill places popping up for many products and bulk containers in spouts and whole foods to buy everything from rice to cashews and oats. It's not everything but its a start! My mother remembers when milk was delivered daily in glass bottled fresh and meat was sold in wax paper.

Getting milk delivered to my house instead of drinking it from a plastic container from the supermarket was a brilliant gateway to reducing plastic imo.
I notice the bins are much emptier on collection day, and these milkman services offer much more than just milk.

Or instead of cutting production why don't we try actually recycling. Waste management needs to change their process
