- Audi a4 electronic handbrake fault handbrake switch flashing red I found a brake in the wiring I plugged a code reader in it said electronic switch fault! bought a new switch but the fault was still there I then worked out the wiring runs from the handbrake switch to the abs pump if you get the same fault try this to diagnose
1. use 2 people one under bonnet one sat in the car.
2 remove handbrake switch to expose the plug
3 have your mate sat in the car
4 run a long piece of wire from the switch to the abs pump
5 draw a picture of the handbrake plug write down each colour then test from left to right then turn the plug over to test the other side
6 unbolt ecu move to the side to gain access to the abs plug
7 unplug abs plug
8 remove a little loom tape to expose the wiring on the abs plug
9 use a multimeter to test for continuity put one probe lead on the test wire and use the other probe to test the abs plug wires if the tester bleeps that wire is good and shows a circuit if it doesn't bleep the wire has a brake
10 put a tick next to each colour as you test each wire so you know the wire is good or a cross if there is no circuit
11 if you find a dead wire with no circuit, gently pull the wire casing back without cutting it in half and twist the test wire onto both ends of the original dead wire plug handbrake plug back on and abs plug back in turn ignition on see if the fault has gone on the dash and try the handbrake if it works unplug the switch and abs pump again neatly run the new wire under the center console and through the bulk head tape neatly to the existing loom solder the new wire to the handbrake switch and then cut the dead wire to the abs pump solder the new wire and heat shrink then tape the loom back up
to test abs plug wires you can either wrap a few strands of wire to your tester probe so it fits it in the end of the plug or gentle use a Stanley blade and (very!!!) gently cut into the casing of the wire then put your prob onto the Stanley blade just make sure you only cut throught the casing and not into the actual wire if you do it that way hope it helps someone to save a few £££ I think this could be a common issue cheers
